Page 2: @FreshStartFoodsCanada Milton HQ: 1-800-563-5033 Ottawa ... › ... · Potatoes: Idaho 40-70 count Burbank markets are rising quickly. Advanced orders are needed to ensure full coverage

• POTATOES CANADIAN - Canada’s March 1 table potato stocks are down 15.6% from last year. That is resulting in extremely high prices.

• ONIONS Northwest storage onions have finished for the season. Texas will continue with yellow, red and white onions through May.

• LIMESLimes supplies continue to peak on the 200’s and smaller, with markets easing. Supplies continue to remain limited on large sizes 110’s – 175’s, with much higher prices.

• LETTUCES ICEBERG - Expect moderate production throughout the week. There should be enough supplies to meet demand, even with the weather issues. We can expect to see Quebec iceberg lettuce the week of June 22nd.ROMAINE / LEAF - More rain is expected in the next few days, so overall quality will just be fair and these quality issues will extend to value-added products as well. Quebec green and red leaf will start around June 10th, romaine and romaine hearts around the 15th of June.SPRING MIX, SPINACH & BABY KALEThe baby tender leaf market continues to stay steady on spring mix, baby kale, baby spinach, and cello spinach. Quality is good.ROCKET ARUGULA / WATERCRESSRed kale crop was adversely affected due to weather and will not be available until the end of June. Baby arugula supplies are good and meeting current demand. Bunched watercress is available. Red watercress is now done for the season.

• APPLESWe are experiencing extremely limited supplies of Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples. Food service sizes (125ct, 138ct) are getting harder to come by.

• BRUSSELS SPROUTS The quality has been affected by the rain and cold weather. Look for this market to remain tight going into next week.

• CELERY Demand continues to exceed supplies for a record number of months on this commodity. Some growers are suggesting strong markets until July of this year. Quebec celery is scheduled to start around July 10th.

• CORNGood volume of bicolor, but yellow and white corn are very limited; quality is excellent.

• AVOCADOSThe industry has seen a recent strengthening in field pricing resulting in a stronger market. We could see the market come off slightly but should remain strong through the summer.

• GOLD PINEAPPLES Pineapples supplies are looking steady. Volume is improving but not at peak volume yet. We are seeing solid 14+ brix reported at all the farms.

• MELONCANTALOUPES - Offshore fruit still showing good internal and external quality as it is late season fruit. The pipeline should be cleaned up on offshore fruit by the end of the week. HONEYDEWS - The honeydew market remains flat this week. Last arrivals on offshore fruit have arrived and should be cleaned up by end of this week.

• TOMATOES EAST - Roma tomatoes are steady with the better value option crossing from Mexico. Grape and cherry tomato supplies are also improving this week.WEST - Duties are set at 17.56% of the value of tomatoes crossing into the US, directly affecting the cost of goods. It is too soon to determine how the supply will be affected but it is expected that imports will be reduced at some point.

• STONE FRUIT Offshore fruit is done. We started off the California season with a good push of apricots, nectarines and peaches. Weather issues may see supplies remain lighter for another 1-2 weeks.

= Local options available

• ASPARAGUSMarkets are down with more domestic production in the mix. We should see this trend continue through the next 4 weeks.

• CAULIFLOWER Cauliflower market has started to come off as there are more supplies in the pipeline. Yields are getting better.

• MANGOESThe crop is peaking on 10 count followed by 12 and 9 count. These smaller sizes would be the best for promotions and advertisements. The larger sizes of 7 and 8 count remain limited compared to the smaller sizes.

• PEARSWashington Anjou and Bosc pears are seeing increased demand – with minimal availability on smaller sizes. Chilean and Argentinean Bartlett pears are still available. Also, Chilean Packams (70- 120ct) are also available.

• GRAPEFRUIT Quality out of California is improving, but has some occasional scarring.

• ** NEW ** PORCINI- From Oregon• ** NEW ** MOUSSERON - From Bulgaria• SPRUCE TIPS - From BC• WHITE ASPARAGUS - From France• WILD ASPARAGUS- From France• STINGING NETTLES - From Oregon• MINERS LETTUCE- From Oregon• FIDDLEHEADS - From BC• SUMMER TRUFFLES- From Spain• BLUEFOOT - From France• MOREL MUSHROOMS - From China

• EGGPLANT EAST - Markets have been elevated for the past few weeks and quality has been good.WEST - Eggplant supplies have decreased in the month of May and will continue to decrease as season winds down.

• PEPPERS EAST - Pepper supplies have been short and markets have been high for a few weeks.WEST - Moderate and good supplies of serrano, and jalapeños. Light supplies of red and green peppers.

• CITRUS - LEMONSLemon supplies on our foodservice sizes 165’s and smaller remain tight. Market prices climb weekly on choice and fancy fruit. Lemon supplies continue to peak on the large sizes 75ct/95ct/115ct.

• GREEN ONIONS The green onion market will continue to stay steady going into next week. We expect to see Quebec green onions the week of June 17th.

• BEANSGood supplies with good quality. Quality is very good. Wax (yellow) beans are available. Snipped bean supplies are good with good quality.

• BROCCOLI Look for supplies to be more available going into next week. Ontario 14/18 count broccoli should start around July 1st, with crowns a week later.

• CUCUMBERS EAST - Cucumber supplies are good. The market is steady.WEST - The cucumber market is steady and is expected to remain steady. Quality is good.

• WATERMELON We are seeing lots of 36 count, 45 count, and some 60 count as well. There will be steady supplies to promote melons in June.

• ORANGES The foodservice sizes 113’s and smaller will remain very limited for the rest of May. Quality is looking fair on the navels and markets are climbing weekly.

• BERRIES BLUEBERRIESThe market should rise slightly through the week as some but not all shippers experience lighter numbers.RASPBERRIESRaspberries continue to be in steady supplies. Quality is good.BLACKBERRIESQuality has been good. Look for markets to remain steady with lower undertones.STRAWBERRIESMultiple rain events have pelted fields putting a damper on strawberry supplies. Shippers will be packing for juice, cannery and severely reduced numbers of fresh market until the plants recover mid next week.

• ZUCCHINI Zucchini remains available across multiple growing regions. Both yellow and green are plentiful and quality is pretty good. We foresee zucchini to remain as a great promotional item for at least the next 2-3 weeks.

• GRAPES GREEN - Markets are higher and supplies remain very limited. RED - Supplies are lighter this week. New harvest market prices are higher.
