Case Study #1

You have a major donor who is a business leader who has made a multi-year multimillion dollar pledge to your organization through his charitable foundation. Part of the pledge has already been paid.

The donor says some very racist things that are recorded and placed online through various technologies. The traditional media picks up the story and he is grilled for his actions.

Do you keep the pledge payments made to date and let the donor fulfill his pledge? Do you return the pledge payment and cancel the gift?

Case Study #2

You are friends with some of your donors through various social media networks. You notice one of your major donors checks in at a doctor’s office. You know that the doctor is a specialist for early onset dementia.

You happen to have a meeting with the donor set for the following week to solicit a major gift. Do you ask the donor about the visit to the doctor? Do you question his/her ability to make a gift based on what you’ve learned about them from their check in?

How would you handle it and what would you do? What part of the AFP Code of Ethics might relate to this case?

Case Study #3

You are a shutter bug and like to post pictures online for others to see. You are friends with some of your donors online who also like to post pictures. You notice that you can see an expensive piece of art in the background of one of the photos the donor posted of their home.

You have an appointment set to meet with the donor to discuss the possibility of a major gift. The donor has made gifts in the past but at lower levels. While they have talked with you about their love of photography they have never mentioned owning expensive artwork. Do you use the information you learned from the picture to change the amount you plan to request?

What part of the AFP Code of Ethics might relate to this case?

Case Study #4

A donor who owns a company wants to make a major gift to your organization. Your organization has a large presence on social media. Your communications department handles the social media for your organization. In exchange for a major gift, the donor wants you to send out a post each month via your organization’s social media networks asking people to like the donor’s company’s social media pages.

Do you accept the terms? Do you make a counteroffer?

What part of the AFP Code of Ethics might relate to this case?
