PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WELCOME TO TERM FOUR I hope that all students have had a relaxing break from school over the last two weeks. This term is a busy one and a very important one. Hard work and extra effort will certainly gain rewards and I encourage all students to make their best effort during this term. Please aim to live out our College motto “Summa Tentabo”, “Strive for Excellence”, which means that everyone gives their personal best to all that they do. STAFF CHANGES I welcome back Mr Dom Ashe who was on leave throughout Term 3. I am sure that he has enjoyed a break from all his work and I thank Mrs Ellen McKell who has very capably replaced him for the term. Ellen will now move to be the Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 10 replacing Mr Warren Lorger who is now the Leader of Administration and Staff Pastoral Care. I also welcome back Mrs Erin Denham who has been on maternity leave. Erin will be job sharing with Mrs Lea Ellison for this term and will resume her full-time position including her role as Leader of Sport in 2017. Ms Linda Frankham has decided not to return to Port Macquarie and Mr Brent Lowrey will continue teaching her classes for the remainder of the year.

Mrs Sharon Beard who has been working at the College for thirteen years has resigned from her position as WH&S officer and I wish her all the best in her retirement. Sharon has been an extremely professional and hardworking staff member; she has fulfilled a crucial role in the school looking after WH&S and I am indebted to her for the passion she gives to her work. CONGRATULATIONS Liam Coelho (Year 12)has been nominated for Encore for his drumline piece "Te Sueno La Cara” accompanied by the SAPSS drumline and his percussion ensemble piece titled "As One". This is an outstanding achievement for Liam and I congratulate him sincerely; he is a very talented and hardworking young man. We are blessed to have such a wonderful teacher, Mr Rob Denham, who has certainly supported all of his HSC Music students extremely professionally throughout the last two years. It is particularly important to acknowledge the expertise of Mr Mark Spence who has worked with Liam in preparing these two pieces. Mark's skills are rare outside of metropolitan areas and his role in working with our drum line and percussion students is a vital one. Alecia Smith has been nominated for Callback 2016 for her Core Performance and her Major Study Performance in Dance. This is also an outstanding achievement for a HSC student and I congratulate Alecia sincerely; she has completed the course via distance education, as up until this year we have not had a Dance teacher. Alecia is a very talented dancer and she should be very proud of this achievement. STUDENT LEADERSHIP COLLEGE CAPTAINS, VICE CAPTAINS, HOUSE CAPTAINS AND STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL Our College is a partnership between staff, parents, students, parish and the community. Student input into formal decision-making is integral to our mutual success. A formal and structured Student Leadership Council will provide a forum for students to express their views and to have them heard. As a College we aim to provide a formal and recognised process to effectively and fairly gather and express students’ opinions, suggestions and recommendations regarding relevant school issues and in doing so:

• enhance co-operation within the school and encourage school spirit; • have student representation actively working with their peers so that the thoughts and ideas they bring to

council reflect the student body rather than their personal views only; • follow up ideas with actions; • create a more enjoyable atmosphere at school; • provide responsible leadership of the student body.

We have completed the process of nomination and voting for the Year 12 2017 leaders and were able to present these students to the student body at assembly this week. I sincerely congratulate the following students and also highly commend the students who stood for election. We certainly have a strong group of students who all possess leadership qualities, so I look forward to a successful year with Year 12 as they lead us in 2017 at MacKillop College.

Prayer for Year 12 students

Let us especially pray for our young people as they begin the HSC exams. God we ask that they especially feel your closeness during this exam period.

Give them calm hearts and quiet confidence in the knowledge that you hold them in the palm of your hand. Bless them with keen understanding and retentive memory.

Give them the ability to grasp things correctly, be exact in their explanations and an ability to express themselves clearly.

Point out the beginning, direct their progress and help them in the completion of each of their responses. Holy Spirit send them your gifts of wisdom and knowledge.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen The school community will keep Year 12 in their prayers throughout the duration of the exams.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – CURRIULUM AND ADMINISTRATION NEWS I welcome back all our students into what will be very busy Term 4. Whilst our Year 12 students will begin their final assessments in the form of the HSC exams, in week 2 the yearly assessment period for Years 7-10 begins. Students should be regularly receiving task notifications and study guides for all of their final assessment tasks. In week 6 and 7 of this term we have a consolidated assessment block whereby students will sit formal exam-style assessments. The time post-assessments is vital in consolidating our understanding of content, refining our skills and building new knowledge as students move towards the next year of their schooling. All learning that occurs post-assessment and up until the last days of the school year will be purposeful and of meaning. Each week throughout the term our newsletter we will focus on what Key Learning Areas will be doing throughout Term 4 for Years 7-10 leading into and out of the assessment period. I encourage all families to engage in dialogue around each of the subject areas as the term progresses. Year 11 students start the final stage of their secondary education. Term 4 is the first term of their HSC year and these students will be very busy building on content from the Preliminary courses as they move toward their first assessment task in the latter stages of the term. All students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the relevant assessment policy and procedures and begin organising assessment calendars as the term unfolds. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN RELIGION TERM 4 YEAR 7 From weeks 1- 6 Year 7 will be focusing on the topic ‘Affirming Human Dignity’. Scripture teaches that we are all made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27). This belief informs much of the Catholic Church’s social and moral teaching and shapes our understanding of human relationships. In this unit students will be encouraged to deepen their understanding of the human person; the inherent dignity and equality of all people and Christian moral decision making. This will culminate in an assessment task due by week 6 where students apply this knowledge to the issue of refugees and draft a letter to their local MP calling for the Australian government to treat refugees in accordance with our faith. In weeks 7-10 students will be looking at different ways of praying and how they can deepen their relationship with God. The focus in the last few weeks will look towards Christmas. YEAR 8 From weeks 1-6 Year 8 will complete the unit ‘Striving for Goodness’. The topic explores how within the Christian worldview God is acknowledged as the highest good. Created in the image and likeness of God, women and men are inherently good. In this unit students will explore and affirm the good in their lives and the reality that the distortion of good can prevent us from realising the fullness of our humanity.

Page 8: Friday, 14 th October, 2016 - MacKillop College€¦ · Friday, 14 th October, 2016 th Software Design and Development (1.55p.m. – 5.00p.m.) - Berg Shield cricket Mathematics (1.55p.m

There will be an in-class assessment task due by week 6 focusing on good in the world. For the remainder of the term Year 8 will focus on the topic ‘Alive in Christ’. This considers how every baptised person has an ongoing responsibility to follow Jesus’ way of life in their thoughts, words and actions. In this unit students will investigate the counter-cultural nature of Jesus’ ministry and how his actions reflect the love of God. They will reflect upon the call to be an authentic witness to a life of faith as we guide students at MacKillop College to live their lives as disciples of Jesus. YEAR 9 Year 9 focus on the topic ‘The Catholic Church in Australia’ for the first six weeks of Term 4. They will consider the history and traditions of the Australian Church and those who have shaped the Church we have today. The unit also looks to the future and how students can play a role in reigniting the Church in Australia. The unit will contain an assessment task where students research one key aspect of the Church’s history in Australia and present it to the class. From week 7 -10 students will focus on the ‘Search for Meaning’. This unit considers that the desire for knowledge and understanding has been evident throughout human history. Our Catholic tradition teaches that all knowledge comes from God and that it can only be fully understood in this context. For Catholics the search for meaning is an expression of our inherent desire to know God. It is only when we bring together knowledge and meaning, faith and reason, that we uncover the truths of life. We work with students to identify how their faith shapes their major life decisions. YEAR 10 The unit ‘Ancient and Indigenous Religions’ is the focus up until week 6. This will culminate in a prepared response during the exam period. The topic accepts, as a foundational principle, the Catholic teaching regarding the innate human response to the transcendent and on the dignity of all people. Students follow the Church’s suggestion that, while adhering to their own faith and identity, Catholics should be aware of the answers given to the universal questions by major world religions. They do this by looking at historical religions and their approach to the transcendent. Following the examinations students will look at the topic ‘Personal Moral Responsibility’. In this unit students will categorise a range of situations where Christians are called to follow their conscience. Students will define the term 'sin' and locate examples of sinfulness in the Scripture and in the world. The unit requires students to identify the sequence of stages involved in a moral decision and use this process to solve a moral dilemma. In particular students will identify the Catholic perspective on a range of moral issues and discuss the complexities of moral decision in contemporary society. REQUEST FOR LEAVE – HOLIDAYS A quick reminder to families that Government Legislation states schools can no longer approve leave for students taking holidays. Whilst an explanation of the leave is still required by the school and this absence will be recorded as explained, it cannot be justified or approved. As a side note whenever possible families are encouraged to avoid taking leave during the school term due to the impact on a student’s educational progress.

ST AGNES’ PARISH NEWS Mass of the Angels The Mass of the Angels will be held in St Agnes’ Church on Tuesday, 25th October at the 5.15p.m. Mass. This Mass provides an opportunity for grandparents, parents, individuals and families to remember the ones in their lives who are no longer with them. All parishioners are invited to come together to pray for one another and for all who grieve the loss of a child. Mass will be followed by a light supper.

EVANGELISATION NEWS IGNITE CONFERENCE 2016 At the end of Term 3, 29 students from Years 10 and 11 headed to Brisbane to attend the annual Ignite Conference. This is a Catholic youth conference that each year hosts around 1000 young people who participate in workshops, attend keynote presentations and also take part in the Sacraments (Reconciliation, Adoration and the Eucharist). It was a wonderful opportunity for our students, along with around 400 other students from the Lismore Diocese, to be formed and inspired in their faith. Congratulations to all our MacKillop students who took advantage of this great opportunity; they were a credit to our College and it was great to journey with them during this time. A huge thanks also to Marg Gobius and Zac Parnell who accompanied us all on this trip and helped out in so many ways.

YEAR 12 NEWS FAREWELL MASS AND ASSEMBLY On the last day of Term 3 we were able to formally farewell the Year 12 cohort. I take this opportunity to thank the large number of staff who assisted as well as the attendance of so many parents and friends. In particular to Rob Denham and the College musicians; Joan Lancaster, Judy Smallwood, Jenni Searson and Sarah Smith for the mass organisation and presentation; and Kelly Higham and her PC group who rearranged the space following the mass for the assembly; Lincoln Beddoe for being our official photographer. To Georgie Pender, Pat Lucas-Lloyd and the Year 11 Hospitality students for the delicious morning tea; Jess Inglis for the Year 12 media presentation; and to Jenny Hunt for her amazing organisational contributions. Finally, a big thank you to Father Peter for conducting the Mass. During the Assembly and final PC Roll Call, each student was presented with a scroll containing the College Prayer as well as a USB containing copies of the media presentations shown at recent assemblies. There were also some memorable speeches from our outgoing Vice Captains, Hannah Post and James Ting, College Captains Lucie Williams and Charles Gaherity and our College Principal, Mrs Anne O’Brien.

HSC EXAMS AND POSSIBLE HOCKEY FIELD TRAFFIC DISRUPT IONS These begin Thursday, 13th October (English Paper 1) and finish on Friday, 4th November (Design & Technology). Students are reminded that there could be traffic delays associated with the construction of the new hockey field if they use the access road off Koala Street. It is highly recommended that all students access the upper carpark from Ocean Drive/Lochinvar Place.

YEAR 11 NEWS RETREAT On Thursday of this week I distributed to all Year 11 students a final reminder note for their upcoming Retreat (Monday, 24th – Wednesday, 26th October). This note includes the departure times for each of the three Retreat venues and a detailed list of required items. Students who have specific dietary needs have also been reminded to fill out the provided form and return it to me as soon as possible. HOMEWORK CLUB All students in Year 11 are reminded that the Homework Club is still operating Monday through to Thursday afternoons for the remainder of Term 4. Homework Club provides students with a quiet and safe environment to study and complete assigned tasks until 5.00p.m. each afternoon. We hope to see this important resource being used by Year 11 students as the term progresses. Andrew Marsh Year 11 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 10 NEWS

WELCOME BACK It was great to see students ret urn to school looking refreshed and rested after a well-deserved holiday. Hopefully everyone is re-energised for a new term that is sure to be filled with challenge and opportunity. With only one term remaining before students embark upon their Stage 6 studies, it will be a special time to enjoy shared friendships before students pursue perhaps separate courses of study in 2017. I would encourage all students to value these final weeks together as a cohort and ensure that they make lots of positive memories for the future. WELL DONE A hearty congratulations to Thomas Berryman who has been achieving amazing things in the pool! At the end of Term 3, Tom competed at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in Darwin. He won an individual gold medal in the 15-16 year boys’ 50m backstroke, a silver medal in the 15-16 year boys’ 4 x 50m freestyle relay team and a silver medal in the boys’ all age 8 x 50m relay team. He also had three top 5 finishes in his other events. An outstanding effort!

WELLBEING Students will be focusing on making positive choices in next week’s Wellbeing lesson. It is important to reflect on the choices that we make and consider the impact they have had, in order to be better prepared for difficult choices in the future. Students will look at strategies that may help them with this process to more easily navigate the sometimes difficult path to adulthood. THANK YOU My sincere thanks goes to Ms Tracey Bewicke for her care, leadership and efforts in her role as Leader of Pastoral Care last term. Ms Bewicke continues in her pastoral role this term with 10M1 who have all missed her and will be excited for her return. BUS PASS APPLICATIONS FOR 2017 Parents of students entering Year 11 next year are now asked to apply for a student bus pass. The only way this can be done is by visiting www.transportnsw.info/school-students. Choose the first option on the page - Apply for a free school travel pass for 2017. Once your online application is complete, you must print the application and return it to your child’s 2017 school for verification. It will then be forwarded to Busways. Ellen McKell Year 10 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 9 NEWS Welcome back to the final term of the year. As I have said in the past students will get out what they put in. It is for this reason that students need to ensure they set up a study plan so they do not become overwhelmed. If students need assistance with this I am more than happy to assist them. CANBERRA The Canberra trip was a great experience with such a quality group of students. The students engaged in all of the activities and conducted themselves in an outstanding manner. This attitude ensured that students had a worthwhile experience. Glen Littler Year 9 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 8 NEWS Year 8 commenced Term 4 laudably and students should focus upon working towards achieving more in their pursuit of excellence. WELCOME Welcome to George Murphy and his family who have moved from England; we hope they settle comfortably into our MacKillop College community and town. CHECK AND COLLECT Various items were left with me from South West Rocks camp after a hasty and wet pack-up. Students must check their school email for a list of lost property and reclaim their belongings by the end of this week.

positive body image and healthy behaviours; • Lily Burgmann for preparing entertainment for young people struggling with difficult situations; • Klaire Fallon who organised an array of entertaining activities for Year 7 to foster multicultural awareness; • Phoebe Hiatt for leading a popular running club for St Peter’s Primary students before school; • Brooke Higham who operated worthwhile alternative lunchtime activities as a ‘hangout’ for Year 7 students; • Alexander Horder for organising a sports program as an alternative to ‘screen time’ for primary students; • Zac Lawrence for assisting the aged to use technology with greater confidence; • Patrick Lockwood who ran a basketball clinic for St Peter’s Primary students; • Amelia Munro for organising fun activities to engage students of the ASPECT school; and • Miah Redfern who organised youth visits to people in aged care. UPCOMING EVENTS Next Monday, 17th October in the junior MPC, period 3, Year 8 will complete the Lismore Catholic Schools Office Religious Education exam. This is a 50 question multiple choice exam to assess student knowledge and understanding of Catholic practices and beliefs. The results of this test are expected to be returned to the College by the end of November. The test is used as a diagnostic tool that directs teaching and learning. It is important that all Year 8 students be present at school on this day. The same examination expectations and guidelines will apply to this Religion test, including catch-up examination procedure. YEAR 8 ‘CATCH THE WAVE’ REFLECTION DAY On Thursday, 20th October a team of local Youth Ministry Officers will be facilitating the “Catch the Wave” Retreat for all Year 8 students in our MPC. The Retreat is an introduction to the CSYMA program which begins in Year 9. Current CSYMA students in Year 9 and 10 will also be facilitating the program. Following on from this day, students will be given the opportunity to apply to be part of the Year 9 CSYMA class in 2017. This class will follow the regular curriculum pathway, as well as participating in various ministry activities within our school and at various primary schools.

The Retreat will address themes that are at the heart of the Catholic faith, and meet the young people where they are in regards to their faith and development. Themes such as Self Image and God’s Love, the Salvation Message and the Gospel Message in Modern Society are explored as well as an opening session titled ‘The Call’, on the Call of Jesus in each and every one of us.

Year 8 students will attend their regular classes in periods 1 and 2 on the day, and then participate in the day for all the lessons after recess. Students are required to wear their sports uniform. We are looking forward to an energetic and fun day and hope that Year 8 take up this opportunity with much enthusiasm.

HSIE NEWS HSIE CANBERRA EXCURSION At the end of last term Year 9 MacKillop students visited Canberra for an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. We had a range of excellent visits that included Parliament House, the Australian Electoral Commission, the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate was deducted from the cost to parents of the excursion. Andrew Evans Leader of Learning HSIE [email protected]

LEGAL STUDIES NEWS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LEGAL FUND UPDATE Our HSC Legal students had the pleasure of handing over $10,000 to the Domestic Violence Specialist and Court Advocacy Services at their farewell assembly on Friday, 23rd September. Essential Energy BBQs contributed significantly to this amount by raising $3450, and eventuated thanks to an eloquent email written by one of our graduating legal students, Lauren Judge. We received the following email from the CEO John Cleland: “ I am delighted that we were able to contribute to the achievement of such a positive outcome for this very worthwhile initiative. The primary catalyst was the extremely eloquent and compelling e-mail Lauren Judge sent me at the outset. It is always a pleasure to be involved in initiatives where there is an obvious level of professionalism and passion, which was most certainly the case on this occasion.” Gemma Morley CEO of the DV Specialist Services expressed her gratitude to all of the students “Know that through your efforts you have touched the lives of women and children living the nightmare that is domestic and family violence and more broadly contributed to raising awareness of domestic and family violence in our local community,” The HSC Legal students of 2016 are now passing the fund over to the class of 2017 and hope the fund will continue to make a significant difference to victims in the local community.
