COLLEGE UNIFORM

I am a strong advocate for the wearing of school uniforms. Our uniform looks fantastic and we have received many positive comments about it. There are enormous benefits from ensuring all students wear our full school uniform. These include:

- Defining our school identity.- Developing within our students a sense of belonging to our school

community.- Provides an opportunity to build and enhance ?school spirit?.- Promotes a sense of inclusiveness, non-discrimination and equal

opportunity.- Enhances the health and safety of students when involved in school

activities and excursions.- Complies with our obligations under Work Health and Safety

Legislation.- Promotes positive community perceptions of our school.- Makes school clothing more affordable by eliminating the risk of peer

pressure to wear current fashions and expensive clothes.

DOOR TO DOOR POLICY

It is important to note that we have a door to door policy for the wearing of our school uniform. This ensures that while travelling to and from school and whilst in the community our standard is consistent and maintained.

I thank those parents who always ensure that their son/daughter leaves home in their correct school uniform. There are some areas where improvement is required and I would like all parents to focus on the following aspects of the uniform please. We rely on parent and student support to maintain a high standard of school uniform; this is an area where we must work in partnership.

- Boys? shirt needs to be long enough to be able to be tucked in.- Boys? shorts are to be the Midford style accompanied by a plain

black belt.- School shoes are to be plain, black, lace up and polishable (no logos,

slip-ons nor buckle ?up).- Girls? skirt is to be worn to the knee.- All students with long hair must have it worn neatly tied back from

the face.

I thank all parents in anticipation of your continued support with this very important issue. If any family needs financial assistance with any aspect of the uniform please do not hesitate to contact me confidentially at the College.

It was affirming to see the number of parents who attended the Year 11 and 12 learning conversations recently. I encourage parents to stay in close relationship with their sons and daughters at this important stage of their education.

INSTALLATION MASS: FRIDAY, 23RD MARCH AT 7.00P.M.

WELCOME FR PAUL GOOLEY AND THANK YOU FR DONNELLY

On Friday evening, 23rd March, Bishop Greg Homeming will be in the Parish to celebrate an ?Installation Mass? for Fr Paul Gooley as our new Parish Priest. This will be a very special occasion and our formal opportunity to warmly welcome Fr Paul as our new Parish priest. I know I speak for all when I say that we are very excited about this appointment. As Fr D himself said, ?Paul is an outstanding priest, dedicated, competent and wonderfully imaginative. One thing you can be certain of is that any Mass liturgy he celebrates will never be boring". We certainly look forward to all of the amazing gifts Fr Paul will bring to our Parish community.

Of course this means that, as you are all aware, Fr Donnelly is retiring after decades of tireless service to the Parish of St Agnes. St Mary MacKillop famously said, ?never see a need without doing something about it?. Whilst Fr Donnelly has never publicly stated that he has lived by this credo, even a cursory glance at his achievements in this incredible Parish community would say that this quote is an excellent description of how he has lived his life in Priestly Ministry. Fore-mostly a devoted pastor and shepherd of his Parish community, Fr Donnelly has shown a level of dedication that is nothing short of awe inspiring. To quote a recent visitor to the Parish, ?Fr Leo has shown many what is possible for a Parish to achieve when it is ?outreach focused? and not afraid to push frontiers and take risks. His approach to ministry keeps Christ very much alive in the community and is key to maintaining the relevance of the Church in a modern world?.

Again, the mass celebrated by the Bishop on 23rd March will be our formal opportunity to thank Fr D for his decades of service to the Parish. All are welcome to attend what will be a truly wonderful occasion.

ASSESSMENT AND EXAM BLOCKS Years 7-10

I have received a number of calls regarding dates for exams for Year 7-10 students during 2018. A decision has been made that a designated exam period will not occur in 2018 for Years 7-10. Alternatively, assessments, including exam-style tasks, will be spread throughout the year.

This decision has been one which was carefully discerned and ultimately made for the following reasons:

- A trial in 2017 of no exams in Term 2 suggested students are far less anxious and perform better when the tasks are spread throughout each term rather than ?crammed? into 1-2 weeks;

- Not blocking out 3-4 weeks of the year means increased class time for teaching and learning;

- Not having exam blocks allows for greater variety in the nature of assessment tasks which can be tailored to suit the relevance and style of learning undertaken in the various subjects;

- Having assessments spread throughout the year also removes the associated stigma of the importance of exams compared to other tasks such as speeches, research tasks and practical assessments, all of which have equal or greater weight.

ASSESSMENT TASKS AND ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

Year 11 and 12 students have a very clear policy regarding the absence from school on the day a ?hand-in? task is due or an ?in-class? task is scheduled to be completed resulting in a loss of marks or even a ?zero? being given. For this reason it is important the current Year 10 and 11 students do not purchase tickets to concerts, book holidays, etc. for 2019 or 2020.

Year 7-10 students and parents are reminded that research shows that absence from school, even for just one day, has a negative impact on learning. As a response to this research the NSW Government has directed schools to not approve leave for holidays, concerts or attending sporting events unless at a national or international level.

For this reason we encourage parents of Year 7-10 students to carefully consider booking holidays, etc. during school terms. If there is an unavoidable need for a student to miss school the day of an assessment task students must submit a ?Request for Extension of Due Date? form which can be found on the College Moodle Assessment page (see image over page). If the task is a ?hand-in? task, students must submit the task prior to their planned absence.

Unplanned absences, such as sickness on the day of the task, can avoid penalties by students completing a Missed Task form and completing the task in the Student Services room during PC on the morning of their return.

ASSISTING STUDENTS TO PERFORM THEIR BEST IN ASSESSMENT TASKS

To assist students with their tasks, a number of updates have been made to the College Moodle Assessment page. I would also encourage parents to familiarise themselves with this page, which can also be accessed via the College website under the ?Teaching and Learning? heading. It is helpful for students to have mums, dads and carers aware of when tasks are on and what is expected in each task. I encourage parents and students to browse the relevant Year group?s Assessment Planner tab.

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, I also encourage you to familiarise yourself with the Assessment Rules and Procedures tab.

NATIONAL DAY AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE

Today is the National Day Against Bullying and Violence which MacKillop College has fully supported.

Why did we support this day?

At MacKillop College we base our relationships on the Golden Rule of Jesus? teachings ? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Treating each other with kindness and respect is what we encourage and it is also the foundation stone for this national day. There is no place for bullying in our College.

How did we support this day?

We raised awareness through PC classes by presenting some statistics about bullying as well as the effects of bullying. Our prayer in PC this morning centred on engendering respect, kindness and love in our relationships. Students were also invited to add to a ?kindness wall? where they posted positive and affirming comments about their friends and peers; showing support for one another and an overall sense of a strong community here at MacKillop. All students received a #NoBullying or Say No to Bullying wristband to wear to indicate that we all stand together in wanting a school free from bullying. Students are encouraged to continue to wear the wristband beyond today, to remind us all of the commitment we have made to support those who are bullied and to stop bullying.

At assembly this week students viewed a video which highlighted an interesting perspective. Often we place inanimate things ahead of people. Often we respect, or care, for inanimate things in our world more than we do for the people around us. I encourage you to watch this video and discuss it with your children.

PROJECT COMPASSION

Fifth SUNDAY OF LENT ? 18th March

This week Ditosa?s story is featured by Caritas Australia?s Project Compassion.

Ditosa is a young girl from Mozambique who hopes to go to university and become a police officer. Ditosa faced a challenging future with food scarcity, little education and few job prospects. Cared for by her grandmother and aunt after her parents died of AIDS-related illnesses, they also lost their home and livelihoods in severe flooding.

The support of Project Compassion, Caritas Australia and Caritas Regional Chokwe (CRC) helped Ditosa?s family to build a new house and assisted with transport fees, school materials and fees, to help Ditosa to stay at school.

Ditosa attended the Matuba Children?s Centre (set up by Caritas in 2007) which provides vulnerable children, like Ditosa, with lunch, study help, and computer and income-generating skills training.

In 2018, Ditosa has graduated from school and is ambitious for the future.

?Without the support of the people from Australia and Caritas I would not have been given this opportunity to continue my schooling?. (Caritas ? Project Compassion)

Project compassion is offering Ditosa and others in her situation ?A Just Future?

During this season of LENT we encourage our students to contribute to Project Compassion 2018 by putting coins into the collection boxes provided in their PC rooms.

CSYMA

Our Year 10 CSYMA students were enthusiastic helpers in the Year 6 Incitare Retreat, a Proclaim Lismore event. They spent the day at the Youth Hub in Port Macquarie on Tuesday, 6th March, offering leadership and helping hands as they acted as small group leaders and witnesses to Christian faith to the young participants.

Their participation was very much appreciated by the leaders of the day, who were very impressed with the way that they interacted and encouraged their young groups. It is wonderful that our CSYMA students are given the opportunity to use the leadership and evangelisation skills they have been developing through this program within our school.

Thank you to those families who have so promptly responded to payment of statement fees or have committed to a regular schedule of payments. Should you have any queries regarding amounts or wish to discuss payment arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact the College office - 65832632.

ILLNESS

If a student is feeling unwell they MUST present to the College office. The student?s parent/guardian will be contacted to arrange collection. The student will remain in sick bay until such time as they are collected. If a parent cannot be contacted, the student?s condition will be monitored in sick bay and after a reasonable

amount of time they will return to class. Students are NOT to contact parents via mobile phones or iPads/netbooks. Parents are asked to not respond to requests from their child to be collected. Office staff will not hesitate to contact parents/guardians should their child need to be collected due to illness/injury.

RESOLVING CONFLICT

Many students are at an age now where they feel they can resolve conflict themselves, but sometimes do not have the skills to do so. It is important that we educate students about the way to approach others if they disagree with them. CONGRATULATIONS

Saoirse O?Shea-Arcur i was lucky enough to be interviewed by the ABC for a segment called ?Fierce Girls?. Her Girl Guides? leader thought she would be a worthy person to go on the show and talk about International Women?s Day.

Saoirse was asked about a variety of subjects including her own personal life, what happens at high school, what role models girls should have and what girls in the future will be like.

What a fantastic opportunity. Great work.

YEAR 7 VACCINATION

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

North Coast Area Health Service are holding the first of their vaccination days at MacKillop College for Year 7 st udent s on Wednesday, 21st March.

All Year 7 st udent s will receive the following vaccines throughout 2018:

- dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose, and

- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a two dose schedule.

A Parent Information Kit for these vaccinations was sent home with students on Wednesday of this week. This kit contains a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that details how personal information will be collected, stored and utilised.

To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

- Read all the information provided;- Complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their

child to receive;- Return the completed consent form to the Area Health Nurse on vaccination day; and- Ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please ret urn t he signed consent form t o t he Area Healt h Nurse on vaccinat ion day. Vaccinat ions w il l not be adm inist ered t o st udent s w it hout a signed consent form . Verbal consent is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clincs in Year 7 but do not complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Parents will be notified by letter from The Public Health Unit if this applies to their child.

Students who have had any HPV doses at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for further reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Please note that MacKillop College does not keep any records of these vaccinations. If you have any questions or concerns please ring Lindsay Lucas (Public Health Unit) on 0429046229.

Parents who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to your child?s Leader of Pastoral Care. The procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

Students are asked to wear their sport uniform on vaccination day for ease of access for vaccination.

If your child is anxious about receiving a vaccination, we recommend you take them to your GP.

GOOD JOB!

At MacKillop College we always endeavour to recognise student achievement, performance and consistent effort. Students are regularly recognised for their academic, sporting and cultural achievements and take pride in these achievements, as they should. Each fortnight students can be further acknowledged for consistently representing themselves and our College with pride in the way they present themselves at school.

Students who reliably wear their uniform in accordance with College expectation can also be recognised for doing so with pride. Each fortnight Pastoral Care teachers nominate the students in their class who wear their uniform on a daily basis with integrity. From these nominations, one student is selected and awarded for their commitment to wearing their uniform with pride.

This week, congratulations go to Bede Munro of 8 Macquarie 1. Bede was recognised and awarded with a $5.00 voucher to spend at our canteen. Congratulations Bede!

WELL DONE

Congratulations to Taylor Toni of 8 Oxley 2 who has an exciting opportunity in front of her at the moment. Taylor has been selected into the NSW Metro Youth Women's team for baseball. As part of this team, she will have the opportunity to compete in the 2018 Australian Women's Championships in Geelong, Victoria over the Easter break. Good luck Taylor!

FARM GATE TOUR

Year 9 have completed another busy week and Monday was certainly a highlight.

Special thanks to Mr Bush and Mr Evans who organised a very engaging and interesting field day ?Farm Gate Tour? to several local farms: Ewetopia, Ricardoes Tomatoes and Strawberries, Koree Herbs and Fun Organics.

Students had the opportunity to find out how these farms run their businesses whilst promoting sustainability and quality produce.

Well done to the Year 9 boys who trialled for Bill Turner soccer. I was aware that a number of boys had trialled the two previous years but missed out, and have finally made it this year. Congratulations on your perseverence.

Congratulations to the Year 9 students who volunteered to run the Years 7/8 trivia afternoon on Thursday after school. It was a great way to show service to others without expecting anything in return.

The Year 10 money line between Year 10 PC groups as an alms giving initiative for CARITAS raised $195 ? well done!

BAKE AND CAKE STALL

Next Friday, 23rd March Year 10 are responsible for a bake and cake stall to support CARITAS. It is desirable that every Year 10 student prepares and donates an appropriate item to be sold at the stall as part of their community service. Please remind your son or daughter that the school is a nut free zone and must not contain nut products.

RETREAT

Please enquire as to what picture or word your son or daughter has collected to bring with them to retreat which helps represent who they are and what inspires them.

Year 11 students are working hard as they approach their first assessment tasks. Discussion as a year group has been centred around the effective use of time and organisation. There is no doubt that organisation plays a huge role in achieving successful outcomes, but what is also important is reducing stress along the way. Students have been prompted to consider the manner in which they are organising their learning documents, both paper and electronic versions to allow for maximum benefit when revising content. The use of the diary, or the like, is highly recommended to provide students with prompts and guides of what tasks require their attention. Conversation has also been conducted around the organisation of their study space with the ultimate goal of effective use of both time and resources. Attention to these areas is aimed at achieving a mental clarity when it comes to facing the tasks ahead, allowing students to maintain a healthy environment and lower stress at the busier times of the term.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Many students take advantage of the library and outdoor areas to study, complete tasks and chat amongst themselves about their learning. Here?s a few happy snaps taken during a typical lunchtime on the senior site.

Congrat ulat ions to Isobel Ber rym an who on Saturday, 10th March participated in the Regional Final of the 2018 Lions' Youth of the Year Program.

The Regional Final was held in Taree and Isobel competed against students from Taree High School, Chatham High School and St Columba Anglican College. The final involved an interview, followed that evening by the Public Speaking Competition (consisting of two impromptu questions and a prepared speech).

Isobel was announced as the Overall Winner of the Regional Final and will now go on to the District Final in Gunnedah, NSW on Saturday, 24th March. She is sponsored by the Lions' Club of Port Macquarie.

Thank you to those Year 12 students who have supported the Easter raffle. Please continue to bring in donations and buy tickets to support CARITAS.

As we celebrate National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence today, our College will advocate and act against bullying. Senior students were asked to show their support against bullying and violence by wearing a wrist band. The main form of action I ask of Year 12 is to NOT be a bystander. More than half of bullying will stop if a bystander does something to support the person being bullied. I am not asking for heroics, I am asking for kindness. Report the bully; If it is safe for you, tell the bully to stop; Offer the victim support.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITION 2019

Last year a good number of interested students and parents attended an information evening about the New Zealand expedition for MacKillop Duke of Edinburgh students in January, 2019.

This trip is an additional opportunity, not an obligation of doing the Award. All attendees of the meeting are on an email list and will receive an update shortly. Year 10 students continue with their chosen elective sport ? please ensure your child comes to school with the required equipment for sport. Failure to do this will result in a sport detention where the student attends student services. Students who repeatedly do not attend sport with the correct equipment will be removed from the sport.

A reminder to all of our students who are participating in water sports that students must adhere to our dress code for appropriate swim wear.

Revealing swimwear is NOT acceptable at MacKillop College and students who wear inappropriate swimwear will be asked to get changed and may

jeopardise their spot in that sport. If you only have one pair of swimmers and are unsure if they are appropriate, wearing a pair of shorts in the water will

solve this problem.

CHANGE OF DATE: Due to a significant clash of dates our College cross country has been changed to Tuesday, 3rd Apr il - Week 10.

MACKILLOP COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

The MacKillop College cross country runs during PC and periods 1-3 for all students in Years 7-12. This event is for com pet it ors only? students MUST nominate on the nomination forms on the sport noticeboard. This means that you must be at the very least attempting to run the entire distance.

St udent s are t o wear spor t uniform on Tuesday including Year 7.

Parents are most welcome to come along and support their children while they run the cross country or assist our staff to run this event.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT

RUGBY LEAGUE ? HASTINGS 9s WRAP UP

Under 13s

On Thursday of last week, 15 boys represented the College in the Under 13 Division at the rugby league 9s gala day held at Tuffins Lane. Coming together as a team for the first time, the side acquitted itself admirably. Playing some entertaining football in attack and digging in to defend against some quality opposition saw the boys come away with narrow losses to St Joseph?s Regional and St Paul?s Kempsey and a win against Melville. While this was not enough to move through to the finals, there were encouraging signs from a team that can be proud of its efforts. Notable performers in the middle were Ned Goodw in , Pat r ick Law lor and Drew Kuhnell, who all took the ball forward and tackled tirelessly.

A variety of halves combinations were used on the day, with Wil Edm onds and Lennox Jensen combining well. Benjam in Geary scored a determined try out wide, Liam Cam eron added real spark by running some energetic straight lines and Luke Gilm our was solid at the back. Best on the day was Hudson Harm er who constantly threw himself into the fray in both attack and defence. Playing in a variety of positions on the day, he scored tries in each game. Special mention also goes to Michael Nixon who, although ruled out by injury, contributed to the team by acting as assistant coach, manager and trainer. A hearty well done to all the boys.

Under 14s

After a wet week the sun shone bright and the U14 rugby league team were able to play some footy. The team played three round games and convincingly won two of these by more than 20 points. The second round game proved to be harder but we were lucky enough to come away with a draw.

The semi-final was against St Joseph?s Regional and unfortunately we lost this by a try, meaning our day was over. The team showed amazing spirit, strength and ability throughout the day. The stand-outs for the day were Corey Flet cher , Joshua Power & Kaleb Cooper , and our eventual players' player went to Jedd Pratt.

Under 15s

First game of the day for our U15 team was against Camden Haven High; the boys managed to score the first try and while still warming up to the day, traded tries and were able to come away with the win 4-3. Our second game of the day was up against the eventual competition winners in Melville High; our boys were undersized, however that didn't stop them from having a good game and showing some grit with their tackles. The final round game was up against Hastings Secondary; the boys, tired from the last two games, still managed to close out the game against a lot of their mates, securing a semi-final spot against St Joseph's Regional College. A few injuries made that last game a difficult one and Regional were able to come away with the win. The boys showed great improvement through the day and it was a pleasure to be able to watch them on the field.

MacKil lop at hlet es shine at All Schools' Tr iat hlon!

Twenty-two top swimmers, riders and runners from MacKillop College travelled to Penrith on 28th February to compete in the All Schools' Triathlon at the Olympic Regatta Centre.

Wednesday is always the day where they race as individuals to try and make the top six placings in order to be selected in the State team. The first race of the day was the seniors and our athlete in this race was Max Mil l igan . Max had been training hard and this showed with his impressive 9th overall and 3rd place in the Combined Catholic Colleges? (CCC) category. What is even more impressive was this was Max?s first All Schools' triathlon as I had finally convinced him, after many years, that triathlon was an awesome sport.

Race 2 of the day was the intermediate group where we had Lleyt on Wall racing. Lleyton had trained hard for this race and was unfortunate that due to a time penalty he just missed out on the top placings. Lleyton needs to be congratulated on the very mature approach he had to the official?s decision. He showed true character and sportsmanship.

The final race of the day was the junior age group which was a tough race as it had over 120 competitors and it was now midday and extremely hot. The surprise package of the day was Jasper Sum sky who placed 5th Catholic boy in his first year. This lovely, humble young man has real potential in his chosen sport. Shanay Nor t hey is to be congratulated on her first triathlon - she also showed real potential and placed 19th Catholic girl.

The other junior girl was Alani Cockshut t who placed 18th.

Thursday was the teams' day and they were all keen and ready to race hard. MacKillop College had eight teams entered.

First race up was our junior boys. We had two teams entered and they had the race of their lives. Our first team who consisted of Tahj Thrower , Jonah Ham er and Ryan Binsk in crossed the line in second overall, earning themselves a silver All Schools' medal and a Silver CCC medal. Our second team consisting of Nat han Sm it h , Oscar Jakem an and Jasper Sum sky crossed as the seventh CCC team.

Some notable performances were Jonah with the fifth fastest bike time while Tahj has the sixth fastest swim time. Ryan also did an amazing run at 3:40 pace for the 3km.

We had two girls teams entered. Team 1- Sarah Kendal , Alani Cockshut t and Tahlia Power were in third place with 500m to go when a race official directed the girls the wrong way - as we go to print we are still awaiting the outcome of an appeal that was lodged to the officials - watch this space! Special mention to Alani who rode her team from 33rd into third on the bike.

Team 2 - Hayley Kable, Madeleine But t swor t h and Em ily Moloney finished up 10th placed CCC team with Hayley having the 13th fastest swim time from 222 teams.

Race 2 saw us cheering for three teams in the intermediate section, one female team and two boys teams.

Team 1 (picture right) - Alexander Horder , Lleyt on Wall and Pat r ick Mullens placed fourth overall and second in the CCC section, giving them a lovely silver medal to take home. Great effort boys.

Team 2 - Kai Thrower , Jonah Ham er and Thom as Osborne who all raced well and placed fifth CCC team. Special thanks to Jonah who rode for a second time so that we had a team. He had the 16th fastest bike time in this older age group. I was also very impressed with Tom?s run - 3:45 pace for the 4km.

Our intermediate female team consisted of Alani Cockshut t , Miren Davies and Sarah Hat her ly who placed 12th CCC team. Miren had the ninth fastest bike time. Thanks to Alani for backing up again to help this team out.

Race 3 - It was time for our big boys to race the final race and by now we were sweltering in the shade. Max Mil l igan swam brilliantly to set the team up with a great swim which is tough when you have raced the day before. It was then time for Will iam Pender -Buchan to show them all how it was done (except for bike dismount which needs a litt le work). Will had the fastest bike time riding his team into second. Gr if f in Goodm an left the transition area in second but he was mindful there was a runner in the race who was a national champion. As he disappeared off into the distance running like the wind, only time would tell if he could keep up the pace and hold off the national champion. At the turn around Griffin was hurting big time, but dug as deep as he could and headed for home. The MacKillop crowd went wild as we saw him running towards the finish in first place and still a huge gap to the next runner. Griffin crossed in first place out of 71 senior teams. This meant the MacKillop senior team had won a gold All Schools' medal and also a gold CCC medal. This was now the fifth time MacKillop has won this category over the last seven years. Not bad for a regional school.

I would like to congratulate all of the competitors. They were a pleasure to take away and perfect role models. Their no fuss approach was greatly appreciated by myself and the other parents.

Also thanks to the parent group for all the support you gave myself and the students. We could not have done it without you.

Also thank you to Erin Denham for all the hard work she does entering the teams.

To the rest of my team I look forward to doing it again next year with this great group of young adults who I?m so proud of - great work team!

SWIMMING

Last Thursday, 8th March 28 MacKillop students travelled to Lismore to compete in the Diocesan Secondary

Swimming Carnival. It was a great day where many of the swimmers competed in multiple events, getting out of

the pool at one end and heading straight back to marshalling to go in the next race. Our students represented

MacKillop College exceptionally well in both the individual events and relays. MacKillop were crowned the best

swimming team on the day for our Diocese amassing 532 points. It was a pleasure to watch Bianca Jamison and

Thomas Berryman compete in their last Diocesan carnival - with both of them winning Age Champion. Other

age champions on the day were Mitchell Chandler and Nathan Smith with Hayley Kable, Benjamin Hamel and

Luke Mapstone being awarded runner-up in their respective age groups. Several records were broken including:

Thomas Berryman, 17 year boys' - 200m Freestyle, 2:03.53 (previous record 2:03.58) - 100m Backstroke 1:00.06

(previous record 1:01.81) - 100m Freestyle 55.12 (previous record 55.61) - 50m Backstroke 27.93 (previous record

29.07); Nathan Smith, 13 year boys' - 50m Butterfly, 31.20 (previous record 31.28). A great day where MacKillop

was represented well by our swimmers and we look forward to their performances in Sydney at the NSWCCC

Swimming Championships.

IN REHEARSAL

Over the coming weeks this article will take a ?snap shot? of selected rehearsals in the co-curricular music program to provide an insight into the weekly events and routines of our music students.

The College Concert Band is the heart and soul of the instrumental program at MacKillop. Directing this ensemble in 2018 is Mrs Cara Stewart. This ensemble currently consists of 50 students from years 7 to 12. The ensemble is very well resourced with access to a complete percussion section! As you can imagine the sound they make together is incredible! This ensemble is responsible for providing special music items at major College ceremonies and events. Furthermore, from this ensemble students gain access to the jazz bands and smaller instrumental ensembles.

Concert Band rehearse every Thursday morning from 7:45am to 8:45am in J16 and surrounding music rooms assisted by Mark Spence (Percussion) and Natasha Jones (Brass).

ENSEMBLE SHIRT ORDERS

Ensemble shirt orders have been made this week. We expect that shirts will be made available to students by the end of this term. If a students has missed this ?round? of orders they are still able to place an order for next term. Please see the Creative Arts Trainee, Majella Starr, in rehearsal for more information.

Can you help w it h accom m odat ion?

At times there are students in our parish schools who are in need of temporary, mid or long term accommodation while completing their schooling. Some families need to relocate while their children are completing the HSC. Other students have to contend with travelling long distances each week and would benefit from boarding closer to their school. There are varied reasons why students find themselves in a position where they are not settled or engaged in their schooling and require support with living arrangements.

If you are interested in, or are able to provide suitable accommodation such as a spare room or granny flat in your home, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. In some cases it would be a minimal rental option but other cases may require more support from the host family. Please feel free to contact me at Parish Administration (65887444) if you require further information or would like to assist with providing accommodation.

BE A GOOD EGG THIS EASTER

Children as young as 12 years old are picking cocoa in West Africa to make the chocolate we eat. Some of these children are trafficked. Most are forced to pick cocoa from an early age for minimal or no wages, for long hours, in dangerous working conditions, without any possibility of attending school. Most of these children have never tasted chocolate and they never will.

Chocolate eaters around the world have made a difference already. A decade ago, slavery-free chocolate was hard to find in our shops. Join with millions of people around the world who now buy and eat only slavery-free chocolate. To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these certification labels on the wrappers: FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ.

Do the right thing this Easter and remember to try and only buy chocolate that ensures young children don't have to suffer so we can enjoy.
