HANDSUP If you want to be part

of something great!

The Astro Ball - 9 February 2019Its not too late to buy your Astro Ball tickets! However we are getting close to the point where we need to tell the hotel our final numbers, so please do go to the website and buy your tickets! Don’t worry if you haven’t got a full table ... we will sort it out so that year groups are together. It’s sure to be a great night … so dust off your dancing shoes and come along for some fun, frivolity and fabulous fare with your fine friends!

Jones v SwadlingMr Jones & Mrs Swadling were helped along the way this morning by Matthias O-B! Together with his dad, Matthias cycled 3 kilometres which Mrs Swadling is gratefully adding to her total (she needs a little help methinks!) Jaunty Jones is rapidly approaching the Scottish border (nearly his halfway point) while Slowcoach Swadling has at last completed the Dorset coastline and is trundling through Devon heading for the border with Cornwall … yay!

Chess NewsCopthorne Prep fielded two of the youngest teams, each of three players, in the highly competitive Southern semi-final of the ECF National Schools Girls’ Tournament held at St Catherine’s, Bramley on Sunday, 13 January. Our squad comprised Sorcha C, Niamh G, Ann T, Amelie R, Natalie V-H and Jasmine O. There were great performances all round with Jasmine and Ann in particular playing disciplined controlled chess and it was both notable and commendable that Copthorne girls were often the last of the 168 players to leave the playing hall. Jasmine partnered with Sorcha and Ann and scored a very respectable 6/15 resulting in a mid-table finish, whilst Amelie partnered with Niamh and Natalie and placed 6th overall with 10½ points out of 15, winning the Top Under-9 team gold medal, and qualifying for the Final due to be held on the 6/7 April 2019. Copthorne Prep was the highest performing school in Sussex and this was an outstanding performance from a young squad who we did not expect to

qualify for the finals until next year. The result bodes well for our ambitious stretch target of Copthorne Girls winning the ECF National Schools title in 2021. Taking into account the Northern UK semi-final, this competition is the largest girls' tournament in the world. Fantastic result girls but our thanks also extend to the parents without whom these extracurricular team events would not be possible.Chess news from the weekend just gone. Apart from the fantastic result from the Copthorne Girls' squad on Sunday, Amelie also captained the U9 Sussex squad of 18 players in an inter-county match against Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Hertfordshire held in Twyford on Saturday. Amelie was one of only two Sussex players to win all their games - an extremely difficult thing to do when you are playing on any of the top three boards. Amelie was also only one of two girls in the squad which is an imbalance I am seeking to address going forward. Sussex finished second but Amelie was still grinding her opponent down (from the winners Berkshire) whilst the trophies had already been given out and most people had left. Amelie had a reasonable performance in the LJCC U10 Majors standard-play event in late December with 3/6 and whilst it was not strong enough to win Top Girl (there were over a hundred players in her section), it was good experience for her as an U9. She can try again as an U10 in December.

Mrs Swadling particularly liked the chattiness at the Good Manners Table this week!

BabysittingDo remember that Miss Molly Heasman is often available for baby-sitting. Her number is 07815 918079. The new Gap Students may also be able to help once they have settled in!

Josiah has lost his black coat. It is named “Ngabirano”. If found, please can you return to Beth or Mrs Barham's classroom

The NurseryPippins class have been using their handprints to make chicken pictures this week. We talked about how the paint felt on our hands and all agreed it was cold! Next week we start our ‘wild animal’ topic and are looking forward to making our ‘rumble in the jungle’ display. Acorns class have been pretending to be soldiers, marching around to Grand Old Duke of York! We have used our photographs to make our own soldiers, painted hills and used felt tip pens to colour horses. We have had a lot of fun hiding in the tent in the role play area and creating our own dens. Oaks class had great fun in Forest Schools this week: they split into 4 teams and had to go on a hunt for toy superheroes, some had climbed up trees! Afterwards the children made their superhero a ‘super den’ using natural materials found in the woods. Each week on a table in the classroom will be ‘finger gym’ activities to encourage development of the children’s fine motor skills in preparation to hold and write with a pencil correctly. This week, the children had a challenge to ‘release the superheroes’ which involved threading (then rethreading) wool through small holes on a picture. At Francis Court, the residents and children used Lego to create buildings for their superheroes to fly over. They also modelled characters out of play dough. Year 2

The children have been busy learning about the Polar Regions and how they differ. When describing the Arctic, the children thought of some lovely adjectives and wove them into their descriptive writing. During DT children worked in groups to design a Polar Region and are looking forward to building it next week. The story of Shackleton and his expedition

is encouraging the children to find out about the Antarctic and what the conditions are like in this very isolated continent. It felt almost as cold as Antarctica this week, and the children carried out an investigation with ‘ice hands’ to discover where the coldest location was in the Pre-Prep …. definitely not under Beth’s desk!

Reception Reception embarked upon a trip around the school grounds using only their senses. We discovered that we could hear the children playing using our ears, we could see steam coming from the swimming pool using our eyes and we could smell something not very nice near the bins using our noses. We were fascinated by the roughness of the theatre wall, and loved tasting our fruit surprise when we got back to the classroom! In Maths we focussed on symmetry and made beautiful butterflies using paint. We also learned to count in 2’s this week but found it rather tricky.Forest School was a hit as always! Mr Lloyd divided us in teams to make our own hot air balloons with string, fabric and egg cartons. We then had the opportunity to fly them off the climbing tower to see which team’s was most aerodynamic. Great fun and lots of laughter!

Year 1We have all now painted pictures of our homes and have enjoyed finding similarities and differences between them. We are beginning to learn about the properties of various materials such as metal, plastic, glass, and what each might be best used for in our homes. We have listened to and re-written in our own words the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and have decorated our

work with ‘straw’, ‘sticks’ or ‘bricks’. They will shortly be seen in our classrooms. We used natural items found in the woods to print a picture using a mallet, muslin and lots of muscle!

Persuasive Writing in Year 4In English this week Year 4 having been learning about the white witch from Narnia and her enchanted Turkish delight! All of the pupils were lucky enough to sample some Turkish delight direct from Narnia itself, and using their senses (smelling, tasting, touching and looking at the Turkish delight) and a variety of persuasive techniques they came up with their own persuasive posters persuading people to try it!

Shin Pads and Gum ShieldsAll boys and girls should have shin pads and a gum shield in their Games bag throughout the year from now on.We are looking to introduce more boys’ hockey and girls’ football for all age groups. It is necessary to wear shin pads to play both of these sports competitively and we would hate for your child to miss out due to not having them as part of their kit. There may be occasions when they play these sports “out of season” so keeping them in their bag at all times will increase their chances of participation. All items can be purchased in the School Shop.

Science in Year 4Year 4TB and AH in the Science Lab investigating reversible and irreversible changes. They tried chocolate, honey, butter and jelly to test the temperature and time it took to melt and if the process could be reversed. Some interesting questions were asked and some surprising results found!

Lifecoach NewsYear 7 Personality Profiling Project is currently looking at “Me at my NOT best”... i.e. me at my worst, my most unattractive, when I like myself least (and possibly others do too!)……..”Catchy little upbeat coaching session” you must be thinking?Using the idea of ‘strengths overused can become a weakness’, and the concept of ‘blind-spots’ (what others know about you, but you don’t), students look at their ‘lead style’ and imagine ‘how’ they are when they are ‘not at their best’. For students this age, introducing the idea that they might think/feel they are ‘at their best’ (….maybe even ‘on-fire’!) it can be a revelation that other personality styles might beg to differ. For example, a more extrovert style might feel they are doing really well by upbeat talking, talking, talking, but an introvert style might just want some peace and quiet. It is a question of perspective.Through a discussion of all of this, the intention is that students start to appreciate that:• No one is perfect. It is our imperfections that

make us so interesting, valuable and individual. • We are all different and that is a good thing.• What seems ok to me might be problematic for

someone else – it is a question of perspective and different personality preferences. We can learn to be sensitive of others in our relationships (at work, at home, at school, in sport etc).

• Not being at our best is ok, so long as we try to manage ourselves and learn from these moments.

• We can change behaviour patterns once we are aware.

• Being aware and noticing – self awareness – is extremely useful. We can set goals to achieve this.

As usual, your children continue to inspire me, make me laugh and make me quite emotional at times, as we navigate these topics, on a one-2-one basis.

Science in Year 6Year 6 have been studying Adaptation and Classification. We’ve learned about Vertebrates and Invertebrates and how these two groups can be classified into even more sub-groups. In order to fully understand how classification keys work, we decided to start with something we know...sweets! This worked a treat and we created these amazing classification keys to sort our ‘specimens’...before we ate them!

Success at ArdinglyThis week, 8 year 6 students attended the STEM day at Ardingly College. Our students were part of two out of the three winning teams. One team won the Velocity award for the fastest Solar car built from scratch, and the other the Aesthetics award for the best designed car. The students learned about trigonometry, construction and renewable energy, and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Well done to all who took part.

Forest School in Year 33CC took part in forest school’s ‘Great Copthorne Bake Off’. After finding suitable wood and starting a fire the children then baked bread on the end of sticks. Apparently it was the best bread they’ve ever tasted! and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Well done to all who took part.

Hearing Dogs for the DeafYear 4 were fortunate enough to have a visit from Sue and Ian Robertson and their dog Jaz today. Sue has been profoundly deaf since birth and has in the last 8 years had Jaz as her Hearing Dog for the Deaf. They gave a very interesting talk and a demonstration on Jaz’s skills and Yr 4 asked some very thoughtful questions. Jaz was given some doggy treats for coming to Copthorne!
