YEAR 10 VISIT KINGS COLLEGE LONDON

BY MS OLIVER

KCL – Year 10 History Trip

On Wednesday 21st October, 18 Year 10s visited Kings College London, Strand Campus. The pupils listened to

lectures and seminars from KCL History lecturers before being taken on a campus tour by current undergraduate

students.

Bolingbroke pupils were able to see and experience life on campus for university students. We saw lectures “in

action”, students using the library facilities, working in groups, completing independent study and socialising. Our

pupils seemed to be particularly impressed by the opportunities available to students, for example, the law fair in

the great hall demonstrated the enormous range of careers advice and support services on offer. They also enjoyed

the views from the eighth floor, where the History department was situated, over London. The hustle and bustle of

a typical university day was an exciting and interesting experience for our pupils, who were able to ask questions

and begin to consider what they might like to do at university, where they might like to go but also what it would

be like.

In the afternoon, pupils were given a tour of the Courtauld Gallery. They were guided around the gallery and ques-

tioned about different paintings. It was a useful experience for Year 10 history pupils to see and learn how art can

also inform us about the past and the ways in which historians can use art in their research. All in all, an enjoyable

and educational day out!

CHRISTMAS MARKETS TRIP

BY MS SHERMAN The Modern Foreign Languages Department is delighted to be offering pupils the opportunity to visit the Belgian and

German Christmas markets of Brussels and Aachen on Thursday 3rd December. The trips will be a great opportunity

for pupils to practise their language skills.

Aachen

Based on feedback from last year’s trip, there have been some changes to the

journey to reach the Aachen Christmas market. We will now be travelling by Eu-

rostar to Brussels and taking an onward train journey to Aachen. This has impact-

ed on the price of the trip but will allow for a full day in Aachen and avoid spend-

ing the night on the coach!

Whilst in Aachen, we will be visiting the Christmas markets, the Lindt outlet facto-

ry, a bakery and the cathedral also.

Brussels

The trip to Brussels is a really exciting opportunity for the pupils to gain an insight into the

greater Francophone world. In Brussels, pupils will visit the Comic Museum to learn more

about the origin of Tintin and sample delicious cuisine from the area.

MS OLIVER AND MS SHERMAN TO RUN THE

LONDON MARATHON!

We are delighted to announce that we will be running the London Marathon on 24 th April 2016. We will be sup-

porting the charity TACT.

About the charity

TACT is a charity that supports children in the foster care system. They also work with adoption services. 13.2% of

children in care obtain five good GCSEs and only 6% of care leavers go to university. 1/3 of all care leavers are

NEET (not in education, employment or training). This is compared to 13% of all young people. Their work is really

important to improve the life chances of young people.

Why them?

TACT wants to create a world where every young person is raised by people who care, so that these young peo-

ple can achieve their full potential. As teachers, we see the difference, on a daily basis, which a supportive commu-

nity and family can make to a child's life chances.

What next?

We will be keeping you informed on the progress of our training right up until Race Day. We will be holding a

number of fundraising events and would love to involve as many parents, carers and pupils in supporting us.

If you would like to kick start our fundraising by visiting our Virgin Money Giving donation page, please see the link

below.

BOLINGBROKE NEW STAFF

FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MS PINNER(SCIENCE TEACHER - VERBIEST HOUSE)

Tell us a bit about yourself?

Before I moved to London in 2014 I lived in Boston, Massachusetts. I am still a big fan of American football,

especially the New England Patriots.

Why be a teacher?

My biology teacher in high school, Mr. Buckley, always seemed so excited to learn and discover new things. I

can’t think of anything more rewarding then helping pupils get excited to ask questions about the world

around them.

Why do you love about Science? I love that science is really about how to find answers to your ques-

tions. Sure there is a lot of content, and you can learn a lot, but learning how to hypothesize and conduct

experiments to find the truth is a really powerful skill.

Favourite film: Good Will Hunting

FIVE MINUTES WITH……...MR EAKIN (ENGLISH TEACHER - KLEIN HOUSE)

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I grew up in rural Australia. Running around in fields, without shoes on, is a far cry from the busy streets and

shirt & tie culture of London!

Why be a teacher?

I wasn’t satisfied with my own education; wanted to make lessons fun (I’m still working on that!).

Why do you love about English

I like the detective type approach to studying a text or film. Trying to pry into what the director or author

are trying to do and create, even if that wasn’t their intent, is fascinating.

Favourite film:

The Prestige: Two stage magicians engage in competitive one-upmanship in an attempt to create the ultimate

stage illusion. Directed by Christopher Nolan, I think it might be one we’ll watch in Film Club next half term!

FIVE MINUTES WITH……MS DAVIDSON (MATHS TEACHER - SMYTH HOUSE)

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Ms Davidson. I graduated from University of Sheffield with a degree in mathematics. Studying

Mathematics (with some Geography modules) enable me to combine my two of my keen interests – mathe-

matics and travelling!

Why be a teacher?

All my life I have loved swimming. I swam in club, borough, county and international events and later quali-

fied as a swimming teacher. I taught primary aged children to swim both at my swimming club and in local

borough pools. I was always so excited watching the progress they made as they became confident, speedy

swimmers. From this stage onwards I knew I wanted to become a teacher.

Whilst at Sheffield University I was fortunate to participate in a mentoring programme which involved stu-

dents from the university supporting secondary school pupils from local schools. I taught mathematics and

mentored pupils to A level. Again I was always so enthusiastic when pupils’ understanding and knowledge

increased and when they began to display real interest and commitment to this subject.

Why do you love Maths?

I love mathematics because it always makes sense. It is so straightforward. There is always only one correct

answer but interestingly often numerous routes to getting there.

I also love mathematics because I believe we all have the potential to be incredible mathematicians – it just

requires motivation and daily practice.

What’s your favourite Film?

Grease. Classic!

MATHS CORNER

News from Maths this fortnight

Happy half term to all of our pupils! It’s been an incredibly full-on start to the academic year, with pupils working

right up to the end of assessment week on lots of new material. We’ve been particularly impressed with how

Year 10 have handled the big step up to GCSE material over the past few weeks. Pupils will get their first new

levels in their Autumn 2 reports, so the level achieved on their Autumn 1 report is the same as their start of year

base line. If you have any questions about reports, please do not hesitate to get in touch with their Maths teacher

or Miss Donaldson.

Society of Young Mathematicians

All pupils interested in mathematics should join The Society of Young Mathematicians NOW!

Members will receive the following every term (3 times a year), delivered direct to their homes:

Mathematical Pie – an eight-page A5 magazine aimed at pupils from 10 to 14 years of age (but is read by people of

all ages) which contains interesting maths problems, puzzles and activities. The questions vary in their difficulty so

that there are suitable starting points for all ages. SYMmetryplus – The SYMS sixteen-page A4 newsletter, aimed at all ages but particularly those aged 10 to 18

contains short articles, news, things to do, calculator hints, book reviews, games, puzzles and competitions. There is a small charge of £9.99 per year. Please complete the application form on the website: www.m-a.org.uk/

syms if you are interested.

Manga High – star performers The results from October are in…

We are currently 59th in the UK October competition,

so we are relying on some dedication from our pupils

over half term to improve our position! All pupils will

have a couple of Manga High tasks to complete for

homework over the holidays – but we encourage them

to log in and try as many of the games and activities as

they would like to. It’s a great way to keep them enter-

tained over the break!

We are really pleased to see some Year 7 names in our

YEAR 8 NETBALL

BY MS LUETCHFORD

On Monday 12th October the year 8 girls played in their first tournament of the year. The girls worked hard through-

out the tournament and played five matches in total. Their first match John Bosco and started well with Lauren scor-

ing a goal early on. Just towards the end St John Bosco managed to equalise the score making the game a draw. Their

second match was a fantastic win with Lauren and Sixtine scoring eight goals between them and the defence managed

to not concede any goals. St Cecilas won their match against us but we picked ourselves up and went on to win the

next match against Southfields 4-2.

With some oranges and melon that were provided by Burntwood School the girls were ready to take on their last

match. This match was against Graveney and again defence were hard at work and didn’t allow anything through the

net. Sixtine and Lauren fought hard to get five goals between them which gave us a great win.

Overall we came third in the tournament and are looking forward to the next tournament in Barn Elms in the spring.

Well done to the team.

RFU GIRLS U13 & 15 FESTIVAL

BY MR BROOKS

18 of our talented athletes went to Battersea Ironsides RFC on Tuesday 20th of October to compete in the Girl’s

Rugby Festival. Our pupils received coaching from myself and the professional RFU coaches, introducing them to

contact and rucking in Rugby. We then played against other schools in a round robin fixture list.

First up we played against Kingsdale School who fielded a number of experienced club players. Despite conceding

two tries early the girls began to understand the game more, Sophie Alger spread the ball wide well, fixing defend-

ers to unleash our powerful and pacey outside back runners in Lily-Rose Boyd, Jaz Meddah and Lily Miller. We

scored 4 tries in a row, with Kingsdale replying the scores were level. Some solid and absolutely ferocious tackling

from Destiny Nicholas-Brown halted many Kingsdale attacks. Hard carrying and superb work in contact was seen

from Ashanie Bowley, Ria Reid and Salma Awale all of whom put their hearts into the game and bodies on the

line. Despite being a ferocious tackler, Destiny Nicholas-Brown was powerful in attack too, pushing with her legs

through contact to lambast through the opposition lines and score multiple tries. Superb performances saw Boling-

broke take the victory. However, one of our own scored the try of the day…. Against us! Latresha Lawrence

playing for the other side, who were short one player, bounced straight through all of our tackles, eventually to be

dragged down and get straight back up to power over the line with 4 defenders holding on to her.

It was a fantastic day with much talent on display. All of our players have received invitations to play at Battersea

Ironsides Girls/Women, whilst the RFU County Coach said that he was particularly impressed with Lily Miller,

Destiny Nicholas-Brown and Latresha Lawrence.

All the girls showed incredible courage to try a new contact sport and did themselves proud!
