On Friday 27th June, Year two delivered a fantastic performance of Jack and
the Beanstalk to parents and the rest of the school. The assembly reflected
an array of learning across the curriculum, focusing on English, Music, Drama
and Science. The performance included a rendition of ‘Let it Grow’ influenced
by the childrens’ favourite film Frozen. The children delivered their dialogue
articulately using expression and intonation. The audience enjoyed the rhym-
ing verses and humour influenced by Roald Dahl. The children all spoke and
sang with confidence. Jacks started his journey ‘stony-broke’ and by the end
he had to declare he was an instant millionaire, he learnt that a bath does
seem pay, he must have one every day, to keep that pesky giant away! It was
wonderful musical performance that would not look out of place in a West
End Theatre. What a spectacular way to end a busy week for Year Two, who
have enjoyed sports day, a trip to Portsmouth Dockyard and their show stop-
ping performance of which they should be very proud. The Year Two teach-
ers would like to thank the parents for their support and for providing such
colourful costumes, which helped to bring the play to life. JN/VS

Miss Goldstraw chose the Year 1 sweet stall as the ‘Best Dressed Stall’ winner. The mums on this stall made paper mâché models of lollies and sweets and the children coloured in sweet jars that were displayed behind the stall. Well done to them!
Year 2 Trip to Portsmouth Dockyard
On Wednesday 25th June Year 2 children went to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to find out about the life of a famous sailor ‘Horatio Nelson’ and learn more about his flagship HMS Vic-tory. On board the ship there was an opportunity to train for life at sea. Through object han-dling and role play the children discovered what life was like in Nelson’s Navy. They set to task by dressing up in sailors and Admirals uniform, sending coded messages and learning new skills such as tying sailor’s knots. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the ‘powder monkey challenge’ and ‘learning the ropes’. They worked competitively in two teams passing bags of powder to be loaded onto the cannons ready for battle. On the lower gun deck they were amazed at how many men ate their meals at the mess ta-bles and decided salted beef and the hard ship’s biscuit with maggots and weevils was not something that appealed to them. Many questions were asked by our inquisitive pupils! Did sailors really eat maggots? What about their 5 a day? The visit on the flagship would not be complete without seeing the Admiral’s cabin and travelling to the Quarter deck enabled the children to see the brass plate where Nelson fell at the Battle of Trafalgar. Back on land our afternoon ended with an interactive session learning about pet animals on
board the Navy ships and a visit to the Museums and Nelson’s gallery. The children searched
the galleries to find different ways that Nelson’s image is shown and used these to describe
him. There was a vast array of paintings, statues, plates, jugs, letters and coins which helped
people to remember this famous sailor from the past. The day ended on a high note with
souvenirs from the gift shop as children boarded the bus back to school and continued to
chatter about their day. The teachers would like to thank the following parents for their en-
thusiasm, interaction and support throughout the day: Mrs Kelly, Mrs Brackley, Mrs Keeling-
Meet the author event at St. Francis Primary School
On Wednesday 25th July, fourteen children from Year 4 travelled to St. Francis Primary School in Chandlers Ford to see Liz Pichon, author and illustrator of the hugely popular Tom Gates series. The school hall was packed with children from eight schools who were eager to gain an insight into the world of Tom Gates; a nine- year old boy with a penchant for doodling and mischief! Liz showed the children how her characters had recently been brought to life by ani-mation and explained how several of them, including Tom Gates’ father, had been modelled on members of her own family. She explained how she had made the transition from illustra-tor to author and encouraged those who enjoyed writing stories to follow in her footsteps. Liz concluded the talk by conducting a ‘master class’ in doodling and the children relished the op-portunity to attempt to recreate Liz’s unique drawing style. After waiting very patiently, those children who had brought copies of Liz’s books enjoyed meeting the author and having their books signed. It was the perfect ending to a hugely entertaining, and inspirational, afternoon.

saw them score regularly for the first 6 overs with some excellent running between the wick-
ets. Some good bowling from Stroud saw SHS lose quick wickets. However, Harry B was solid
and scored regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking over and give SHS an impressive total of
101 runs for Stroud to chase. After tea SHS took the field. Excellent bowling from all the boys
saw wickets taken regularly throughout the team with a particular mention to Harry B and
Jim L who bowled exceptionally well. The boys concentrated well in the heat to deliver
some impressive batting and fielding which resulted in a deserved win.
