Friday 29th June - Saturday 14th July

First of all, we have changed our name. ‘Deal Festival of Music and the Arts’ has become ‘Deal Music & Arts’. This may seem a small matter, but it is far from that. It represents the dramatic change our organisation has undergone in the last six or so years. Deal Music & Arts is now a fully-fledged arts organisation that supports education through a range of year-round programmes. That said, our summer festival remains as strong as ever, perhaps even stronger because of our fundamental duty to serve the public good. 2018’s Festival strikes a new dynamic with outstanding residencies over its three weekends with international artists and ensembles. We have everything from the great baroque and classical masterworks to films with live contemporary music, from fabulous theatre and visual art to informative lectures. We are deeply proud of our education credentials, and we are delighted that this year’s Dr Rosemary Dunn Lecture is given by Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England. And we build on the success of last year’s live music outdoors with two community stages - fun for all the family! With well over 40 events in two weeks, from world leading artists to outdoor community activities covering Deal, Sandwich, Margate and Dover, Deal Music & Arts – Festival 2018 truly celebrates arts for all! Paul EdlinArtistic Director, Deal Music & Arts

I am delighted to be able to offer a huge welcome to everyone this year - from seasoned and loyal Deal Festival aficionados to those who have not yet had the opportunity to experience the vibrant, joyful, social and artistic satisfaction that comes from a visit to Deal Music and the Arts. This year celebrates a decisive new name change - and a new look brochure - and shows once again Deal’s incredible growth and dynamism under the inspired directorship of Paul Edlin.

We hope that you will be tempted by the tremendously exciting array of events listed here - from Stephen Kovacevich and the Purcell School to Ronnie Scott’s, and on to European Union Chamber Orchestra in Residence with Tasmin Little OBE; from the Academy of Ancient Music and Guildhall School of Music bringing an enticing concert of Mozart, to Phantom of the Opera with live score by Minima; and from La Mer at Turner Contemporary to David Starkey’s intriguingly titled ‘Henry VIII, the first Brexiteer’ – there is sure to be something for almost everyone…

In addition to all this, the Festival’s fantastic achievements in education work continue to be supported by our ongoing Deal Appeal, helping us to continue to provide our year-round programme working with local schools and communities.

So we hope to see you at some point soon - now not only during festival time but also at other times of the year. The new, even more ambitious Deal Music & Arts is waiting for you with open arms. We hope you to welcome you soon.

HOP PICKING AND HARVEST IN KENT11.00am St Saviour’s Church, The Strand, Walmer

Natasha Greenham and Lord Gawain Douglas, together with Singing for Pleasure, take us on an interactive journey that delves into the history of hop picking and harvesting in Kent, the Garden of England, bringing alive the personal experiences of the hop pickers through exploring local songs and poems that shine a light on the experiences of these people and how certain events and experiences at the time have coloured their lives.

On one surface, taking the family down to Kent to hop pick was seen a holiday of sorts, but looking deeper it was also a life tainted by tragedy and exploitation.

DAVID STARKEY

HENRY VIII -THE FIRST BREXITEER7.30pm St. George’s Church, Deal

Henry VIII, like a colossus, bestrides the history of our country. He invented the idea of British uniqueness; in fact, the Reformation could be defined as the first Brexit, when his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. In this talk David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry’s reign to examine his tumultuous personal life, which pitted religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of ISIS, through to the Grand Tourists who bought European culture with British money, all offering so very many parallels with the Brexit situation we find ourselves in today.

He has created some five hundred images of English rural life and history, of the Bible and of the Englishman’s view of Europe. Born in 1941, Clarke’s upbringing in the austerity of war-time and post-war Britain, made him reliant on his own imaginative resources. Responding to the comedy of everyday life, he brings his own unique brand of humour to his interpretation of past and present history through the eyes of the common man.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE

by WilliamShakespeare

7.30pm Walmer Castle

in collaboration with English Heritage

Vienna is rife with loose morality and ludicrous characters. The weak Duke goes undercover, leaving

his strict deputy Angelo in charge to clean up the city, but when Angelo sentences young Claudio to death for

sleeping with his wife to be, Claudio’s sister Isobel, a nun, pleads for his life. Angelo agrees to spare him, but the stakes are high. Isobel faces an impossible choice...

Changeling’s Measure for Measure is inspired by the Moulin Rouge with its hint of the Burlesque. This witty

Shakespeare comedy has a storyline full of twists and turns as sin meets virtue and good battles against evil.

Please bring a picnic for before the performance and supply your own chairs.

In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be at St Mary’s Church, Walmer. No food or drink in
