Headteacher’s Weekly Review
I am writing this as Gavin Williamson is answering questions at the press conference. I am turning into my dad
- I am shouting abuse at my mobile phone on my desk as I watch the press conference live. My dad shouted
at football on television. Not that then as In this case, it made a difference!
I have been reading the guidance throughout the day and in truth don’t quite yet see a way through - I will
but just not today.
I wholeheartedly and with every fibre of my being believe that it is the right ambition to bring all children back.
I also understand that the government guidance is an attempt to mitigate the risks associated with
coronavirus as effectively as possible. However, the logistics are, as a colleague head said, mindboggling. I
will be meeting with my staff and the Senior Leadership Team tomorrow and over the course of next week to
work out a plan so that we can welcome back all our students. I will share with you as soon as I have a plan.
I wasn’t going to write about coronavirus at all this week - I had racked my brain to try to be more interesting
and came up with the idea of “The Soundtrack to My Life”. I was inspired on my way to school by Hi Ho Silver
Lining on the radio. Always played at the end of 1970s school discos.
I then began to think of songs that had punctuated my life. I also wondered if there was a particular song,
released because of the current pandemic - but couldn’t think of one.
Cont./...
My list is a fairly middle of the road one and not likely to impress any of you and so I will save that delight for
another week. Don’t be disappointed I am not sharing and when you think that the soundtrack started well,
with me, at age 3 or 4 singing along to my parents copy of the Beatles ‘She Loves You’ but then progressed to
the purchase of my first single - Colonel Hathi’s March from the Jungle Book - you are not missing much.
The purchase of the single was an epic experience and one repeated often. A visit to a privately owned
record shop, Ard Radio in Great Junction Street, Leith, where we could browse through singles and albums. It
wasn't like the uber cool shops in Camden - my dad shopped in it! It was however a tactile, sensory
experience - all squashed in a tiny shop and squeezing past each other to rummage through the stock. I
remember queues outside when the Bay City Rollers released ‘Rollin’ (I told you my soundtrack would not
impress).
I also remember my sister was with me (and our parents) and she chose ‘Here Comes the Diddy Men’. The
choice of record is not the issue (for some of you it might be). Anyone who is an older brother or sister will
probably get my irritation here. My first single, almost a rite of passage and she, two years four months and
eleven days younger got her record at the same time!! I had to wait until I was 16 to get my ears pierced - she
got hers on the same day! I have lots of examples.
My sister and I shared a bedroom and my mum had decided I could stay up slightly later than my sister. It
didn’t go down well and after cleaning her teeth and heading to bed, my sister popped her head round the
living room door and announced that when she was older she would have a baby girl, call it Debbie and
make her go to bed first! The trials and tribulations of growing up.
Children today are enduring a real trial and it is up to us, the adults to provide emotional security. Not always
easy, but it is our number one job.
One of the ways we have been preparing for the return of all students is to provide the opportunity for staff to
undertake training so that we can be designated a ‘Trauma Informed’ School. We are mindful of what the
lockdown experience may have been like for some of our students and so this will allow us to develop a
focused framework of support through both our pastoral care and curriculum provision.

I am not sure what your plans are for this 4th July weekend but whatever is in store for you - stay safe.
Have a lovely weekend.

LGBT+ Pride marches and festivals are usually around this time every
year: they’re often more like celebration parties than political protests
Differences!
Everybody is different in their own way. This may be the way they talk, look and even their attitude, but this is what makes them unique. June is pride month, many people around the globe celebrate pride every year, if you do not know what pride is then here is an explanation:
Pride: this is celebrating people who are gay, bisexual, lesbian, asexual and many more. Although
many of these may seem like they are different words that mean the same thing, they actually are
quite different.

If you have a laptop or Chromebook with charger that you no
longer use and you would be prepared to donate it to school, we
would then distribute these to students to keep for use at home.
If you require further information, please call the school.
Thank you to those who have already donated laptops.
Year 12 Biology
It has been a delight to welcome Year 12 Biology students back into the
classroom over the last few weeks. It has allowed us the chance to put all the
online home learning into practise.
Last week students dissected a sheep heart and managed to understand
how the diagrams in the books look very different in real life! No one fainted
so think they will all make good surgeons in the future!
This week we moved on to a less messy plant practical! Students had to set up a
potometer to investigate rates of transpiration (amount of water that travels
through a plant). This caused a lot of frustration, as it all has to be set up
submerged in water without any air bubbles!
Brilliant work everyone!

Calling all students in Bailey, Gemini, Romer and Young!
Everyone can take part in this year's Sports Day. It's a 'Virtual Sports Day' and only one house will win.
Gemini currently hold the Sports Day Shield but can Romer, Bailey and Young catch them this year?
Compete for your house and everyone who enters and follows the instructions correctly will earn
points for their team.
The instructions are all on the PE Google Classrooms along with an entry form to submit once a chal-
lenge is completed either from home or at the local park. All entries MUST also submit video evidence
of the challenges being done as this is the fairest way to decide on the points awarded to each
house.
It is not compulsory to enter, however, Sports Day is always a big deal at Sandhurst School and this
may be the only time we ever run a 'Virtual Sports Day'. Please make an effort for your house and
complete at least one of the challenges.
Good luck and let the best house win!

Challenges
Sprint Challenge - Get a partner to film you running a sprint. You will be awarded points
based on how fast you run over a reasonable distance.. The distance that you sprint can be
decided by you but to score the best points try to aim for between 75 and 200m. For a benchmark,
aim to run at least one length of a football pitch as fast as you can. Be sure to do a warm up first
including some jogging and stretching.
Long Distance challenge - Get a partner to film you running laps of a local park or
field. You should aim to run 800m to 1km. This would be approximately 3 laps of a large football
pitch.. Marks will be awarded based on how well you can maintain a fast running speed.
Cont./...
Jump challenge - Set up the standing long jump in your garden or local park. Stand behind
a line and jump with two feet, landing with your feet together. The distance measured is from the start
line to the back of your heels. No run up is allowed and the jump must be performed from a standing
start. Use a tape measure to record your scores. Video evidence is required.
Throw challenge - Throw a ball into a bucket or a bin from a distance. The best and farthest
accurate throws will receive the highest points. You can set up the challenge however you want in
your garden or local park. All entries must have video evidence submitted.

Competition winner
Victoria Pinnell (R7) recently entered an art
competition organised by the Lexicon in Bracknell. They needed
people to create artwork featuring butterflies and Victoria
submitted this gorgeous butterfly.
Unsurprisingly, she was chosen as their winner and not only will
her creation feature in their butterfly display, but she’s also won a
£5O voucher.
Well done Victoria, we were so impressed by the quality of your
work, you fully deserve this!

CREATIVE WRITING SESSIONS ONLINE
Wokingham Library are now resuming the Igniting Writing
sessions remotely, for teens to dial in. Running these online
sessions will hopefully be a way to get young writers to come
together, share ideas and develop their storytelling, which is vital
when so many of their usual creative outlets and ways of
making friends are so restricted still.
The online Igniting Writing sessions are being held monthly, with the next one scheduled for Saturday 11th
July at 10:30am. If you want to join in, all you need to do is have a parent or guardian email Elizabeth
McDonald, the Wokingham Library Young People and Families Outreach Manager, with their name, age
and school, requesting to be part of the session. Elizabeth can be contacted on
[email protected] and she can then send them the link to dial in.
Writing challenges have also been posted on the club’s blog: https://ignitingwriting.tumblr.com/).
Well done from

Science, Engineering & Covid-19
Tuesday 14 July
Big Bang Digital 2020 – science, engineering & Covid-19 celebrates the amazing work of scientists and
engineers in a pandemic.
Mark it in your calendar for a day of inspiring online sessions to give young people a front row view of the
incredible contribution of scientists, healthcare professionals, engineers, technicians and students in
responding to Covid-19.
Join us as we hear from the people working to develop a vaccine, the teams involved in building the
Nightingale hospitals, those keeping transport networks going and the companies innovating to respond to
the UK ventilator challenge.
We’ll meet inventive young people supporting frontline efforts across the world, get an insight into the
environmental benefits of staying at home and celebrate healthcare heroes and learn how their jobs have
changed.
With interactive polls, live Q&A sessions with guests and associated activities throughout the day, there are lots
of ways to get involved and even prizes to be won!
