All of us have been baptized into
one and the same Spirit, and live
by that same Spirit. That same
Spirit, the Advocate, was given as
gift to the Disciples to remind
them of all that Jesus said and did,
and to strengthen them to go forth
in the name of the Lord, “to renew
the face of the earth”.

Candle Intentions
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We welcome another Feast Day to celebrate our community, our Faith and the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua. This year we are celebrating the Feast Day on Pentecost Sunday, a day known as the Birthday of the Church. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles to give them the gifts and inspiration to go forth to preach the Good News and bring people into the Body of Christ. It is because of this the Diocese of Youngstown chose the Feast of Pentecost to begin and conclude the celebration of the 75
th Anniversary of the Diocese. We can include
prayers for the Diocesan Anniversary at our Feast Day celebration since we will be unable to attend the closing Mass at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.
We can offer prayers of thanksgiving to God for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The young people of our parish who were confirmed this year can help us to remember the gifts of the Spirit. Bishop Murry would have quizzed them during the homily of the Confirmation Mass. The gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord are the gifts that guided our ancestors safely to Canton, Ohio. The Holy Spirit gave them the desire to live their faith and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.
This Sunday the Holy Spirit is here to help us celebrate our heritage, but also continue to live and share our faith into the future. We face many challenges as a Church in the 21
st Century, but we can be assured that the
Holy Spirit will be here to give us the courage, strength, and wherewithal to carry on. Let our hearts and minds be open to God’s Spirit. Today, let us celebrate all that we are and all that we are called to be. Have a Blessed and Happy Feast Day. Per Sempre Casa. Your brother in Christ, Fr. Tom

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Today’s Gospel tells us God wants to take up residence in your family, “We will come and make our home with you.” Every family is called to be a tabernacle where God dwells. Is Jesus a permanent member of your family or a temporary guest? Today, the promise is given. The choice is ours.

WHY DO WE PIN MONEY ON A STATUE OF ST. ANTHONY? In the tradition of our immigrant families from Italy, we continue the custom of pinning money on the statue of Patron Saints. Many people attach the money as thanksgiving for favors received, for petitions requested and more importantly, for the love of the Saint and their Parish Family. WHY DO WE CARRY THE STATUE OF ST. ANTHONY IN A PROCESSION? This excerpt taken from “Religion in American History”, edited by Amanda Porterfield and John Corrigan, 2010 gives us some insight into the tradition of processions:
“When Italian Catholic immigrants settled, they improvised religious rituals in apartments, rented rooms, tenement backyards and city streets. In 1881, for example, immigrants from Salerno brought devotion to their patron saint to East Harlem, kneeling before small printed pictures of the Madonna del Carmine that had traveled, as they had, from Italy to America. They said the rosary, prayed the Magnificat and ate together - and when Italian priests were on hand, they celebrated mass. By the second half of the 1880’s, devotion to the Madonna was so popular that it overflowed onto the city streets, where thousands of Italians, mostly women, processed with a Madonna statue adorned with precious stones and other tokens of gratitude. Italians and their Madonna wandered through new cityscapes together. Worship of the Madonna helped these Italians do several things. It collapsed time and distance, reminding these immigrants of older traditions and their homeland; it recapitulated their lost wanderings through American cities, full of doubt and hope; and finally it transformed the loud, threatening urban spaces they now occupied into new kinds of sacred enclosures, allowing them to be faithful to God and Italy while also becoming modern and American. Street-oriented devotion to the Madonna helped create a new Italian Catholic Identity (Orsi 1985).” As we continue as an immigrant parish, welcoming many cultures, we can see the beauty of what we all have in common. Love of God, Love of Family, Love of Church!

“Encountering the Holy Spirit; Encuentro con el Espíritu Santo”
Welcome by: Joe Marcoaldi & Juan Hernandez
Entrance Hymn: Gather Your People (B. Hurd)
Gather your people, O Lord. Gather your people, O Lord. One bread, one body, one spirit of love.
Gather your people, O Lord.
1. Draw us forth to the table of life: brothers and sisters, each of us called to walk in your light.
(Refrain)
2. We are parts of the body of Christ, needing each other, each of the gifts the Spirit provides.
(Refrain)
3. No more harm on the mountain of God; swords into plowshares. Free us, O Lord, from hardness
of heart. (Refrain)
4. Wash us, Lord, in the waters of life; waters of mercy, waters of hope that flow from your
side. (Refrain)
En Espanol: Qué Alegría Cuando me Dijeron
(Respuesta)
Qué Alegría cuando me dijeron:
“Vamos a la casa del Señor”!
Ya están pisando nuestros pies
tus umbrales, Jerusalén.
(Respuesta)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we
bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God,
heavenly King, O God almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb
of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take
away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you
alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Amen. Amen.

Send Us Your Spirit (D. Schutte)
1. Send us your Spirit, O Lord. Evening enfolds us and holds us too near. Wake the morning light.
Make our living bright. Shine on our darkness, O Lord.
2. Hold us with mercy, O Lord. Sorrow has spoken, has broken our hearts. Clothe us in your care.
Be the life we bear. Feed us and fill us, O Lord.
3. Teach us your wisdom O Lord. Shadows have clouded, have crowded our sight. Give us hearts
that see. Set our loving free. Hear us and help us, O Lord.
4. Send us good summer, O Lord. Winters have chilled us, and stilled us too long. Give us love’s
own fire. Be our true desire. Send us your Spirit, O Lord.

Lord, until you come again”.

Christian Service/Social Concerns Neighborhood Outreach
We are once again asking for assistance for neighborhood children with the Summer Collection of Peanut Butter and Jelly, Mac & Cheese and Juice Boxes
Now through August.
Why do we collect? To support neighborhood families by providing kid friendly food during the summer months. (Many of the children in our neighborhood qualify for free breakfast and lunch during the school year. This “disappears” during the summer months.) We will be working with
Sherrick Road Church of God to support their “Blessings in a Backpack” Program that is designed to help families fill that gap.
How does it work? Bring your donation of PB & J, boxed macaroni & cheese or juice boxes to Mass with you. Note: We are adding juice boxes this year at the request of the coordinators of the Backpack
Program. Drop your donation into the laundry basket in the hallway. It’s as easy as that!
Thanks so much for your support of this special summer project!
Our Feast Day Celebration is a success due in part to the generosity of our
Patrons and Sponsors. We gratefully thank them for their support!
