“With the Rays, opponents hit .194/.247/.333 against his fastball and right-handed batters hit .222. There was a fundamental change in approach, and it worked. Smyly has always crushed lefties (.192 av-erage allowed), so if the improvement against right-handed batters is

real, he can take his game to the next level. … The early indicators are that the new approach has made Smyly a better pitcher.

Ê Pitched a scoreless 9th on Wed vs. BOS for his first career save…it was the Rays 15th game and his 8th app, and already this season has made his first career start (April 10 at MIA) and recorded his first career win (April 14 at TOR) and first career save (Wed vs. BOS).

Ê Is the only pitcher in the majors to start a game and record a save this season…has also stranded all 5 inherited runners this year. Ê Is 1 of 4 Rays relievers to record a save this season, along with Brad Boxberger, Kevin Jepsen and Ernesto Frieri. Ê Made his first career start on April 10 at MIA after 256 career relief apps between the minors and majors…tied his longest career app in the majors. Ê Became the first AL pitcher to make 2 relief apps and a start within his team’s first 4 games of the season since NYY Greg Cadaret in 1990. Ê On Opening Day vs. BAL (1.1-IP, 4-SO), he became the first pitcher in since records are available (1914) with more than 1 IP to strike out every BF. Ê Spring Training: His 11 apps tied for the team lead with C.J. Riefenhauser…allowed only 7 H and 0 BB in 10.1 IP.

#47 BRANDON GOMES, RH Last App: 4/23 vs. BOS (0.1-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 0-BB, 1-SO) Saves-Opps: -- vs. LH: .167 (1-6)2015: 0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 G Long Relief App: 2.0, 4/19 vs. NYY IR-RS: 6-0 vs. RH: .000 (0-6)

Ê Stranded a pair of inherited runners yesterday vs. BOS with a called strikeout of PH Hanley Ramirez on a 79 mph slider to end the 7th. Ê Has made 3 scoreless apps (3.2-IP, 1-H, 1-BB, 4-SO) since being selected from Durham on Sunday after Grant Balfour was designated for assignment. Ê Retired all 4 BF on Tue vs. BOS…made his season debut on Sun vs. NYY, throwing 40 pitches over 2 scoreless innings. Ê Was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (5.1-IP, 2-ER) and 7 SO in 4 apps for the Bulls…has split the last 4 seasons (2011-14) between Durham and the Rays. Ê Spring Training: Went 1-0 with a 0.63 ERA (14.1-IP, 9-H, 1-R/ER, 1-BB, 20-SO) in 9 relief apps…was reassigned to minor league camp March 30. Ê In his career, has held righties to .194/.276/.317 (49-for-252), while lefties have hit .291/.362/.473 (48-for-165). Ê In 2014, made 29 apps over three stints with the Rays…over his final 2 stints, had a 1.50 ERA (12-IP, 2-ER) in 9 apps.

#40 KEVIN JEPSEN, RH Last App: 4/23 vs. BOS (1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 0-BB, 0-SO) Saves-Opps: 1-1 vs. LH: .077 (1-13)2015: 0-1-1, 1.13 ERA, 8 G Long Relief App: 1.0, 8x-last 4/23 vs. BOS IR-RS: 3-1 vs. RH: .133 (2-15)

Ê Has only allowed 1 R in 8 apps spanning 8 IP…the Rays defense has made errors behind him in each of his last two apps. Ê Took the loss on April 17 vs. NYY, allowing his 1st run as a Ray on an RBI single to Alex Rodriguez. Ê Escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam by only allowing one run to score on April 16 at TOR (Bautista fly out, Encarnacion sac fly, Navarro ground out). Ê Pitched a perfect 9th on April 14 at TOR for his 6th career save and 1st with the Rays. Ê His last major league win was June 27, 2013 at DET, having made 106 apps since then…only three pitchers in AL history made more apps than he

did last season (74) and not earned a win.

#30 ERASMO RAMIREZ, RH Last App: 4/19 vs. NYY (1.0-IP, 0-H, 0-R, 0-BB, 0-SO) Saves-Opps: -- vs. LH: .333 (4-12)2015: 0-1-0, 21.32 ERA, 3 G, 1 GS Long Relief App: 2.0, 4/10 at MIA IR-RS: -- vs. RH: .476 (10-21), 1-HR

Ê Pitched a scoreless 9th on Sun vs. NYY, retiring Mark Teixeira, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew in order on 8 pitches. Ê His Rays debut was on April 10 at MIA in relief…allowed 6 hits and 7 runs over the 3rd-4th innings…his 7 runs allowed were the most by a Rays

reliever since Gary Glover on July 10, 2008 at CLE and tied with Brian Meadows on April 5, 2006 at BAL for the most ever in a Rays relief debut. Ê Has faced 40 batters this season…21 of them have reached base and 16 have scored.
