River Cats rally late but fall to Bees 5-4
Two-run eighth inning not enough in first game back from break
Salt Lake City, UT – The Sacramento River Cats (35-55) returned to action after the three-day
All-Start break against the Salt Lake Bees (50-41) and despite a late comeback, fell just short by
a score of 5-4.
Sacramento struck first in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI-single by Mac
Williamson, his 33rd
RBI on the year. The Bees countered with a run of their own in the bottom
half of the frame off starter Matt Gage who was making his third start of the year. Centerfielder
Justin Ruggiano retook the lead with a solo home run in the third but Salt Lake was once again
up to the challenge, scoring four more runs over the next two frames.
The River Cats made got things going in the eight after Ali Castillo lead off the inning with a
double followed by an Orlando Calixte triple which drove him home. One batter later, Justin
Ruggiano’s bloop-single scored Calixte, but it was all for naught as they were retired in order in
the ninth. The left-hander Gage picked up his third loss of the season and Sacramento dropped
their record to 11-16 in one-run games.
The River Cats will send right-hander Tyler Beede (4-7, 5.01) to the hill for game two. The Bees
will counter with right-hander Luis Diaz (3-6, 6.12). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. (PT) and the
game can be heard live on the air on ESPN 1320 and online at rivercats.com.
Postgame Notes
Ruggiano: Justin Ruggiano launched his sixth home run of the season tonight and first against a
left-handed pitcher…finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI…tonight marked his third

tonight…right-hander Roberto Gomez went two scoreless frames while allowing just one
hit…the relief outing was his first since 6/1 after making six starts previously…left-hander Kraig
Sitton and right-hander Derek Law each went one inning…Sitton allowed one hit while Law
allowed one walk struck out one.
Calixte: Third baseman Orlando Calixte collected his team-leading 36th
RBI tonight...also hit his
team-leading fifth triple…Calixte has five of the team’s 19 total three-baggers…committed his
sixth error, all of which have come on the road.
Senators and Sandford Steal Series Opener
Two-Run Ninth Sinks Squirrels
RVA - Pinch-runner Darin Sandford stole second base and scored on a single to left field in the
ninth inning, propelling the Harrisburg Senators (36-53) to an 8-6 win over the Richmond Flying
Squirrels (36-52) on Thursday night at The Diamond. Richmond roared back from an early five-
run deficit and tied the game on a solo home run from K.C. Hobson in the eighth. Hobson has
homered in the last three contests and four of his ten games overall with Richmond.
Harrisburg's Corban Joseph brought home the winning-run off of reliever Cody Hall who
suffered the loss. Game two of the series is on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. A pre-game concert
from Three Sheets to the Wind will begin at 6 p.m.
Hobson drilled a no-doubt solo home run over the right field wall in the eighth inning to tie the
game for Richmond, 6-6. Harrisburg rebounded with a pair of runs off of Hall to take game one.
Hall entered to pitch the ninth and allowed a one-out single to pinch-hitter Jose Marmolejos.
Sandford replaced Marmolejos at first base and scored on Joseph's base hit to left field. The
next batter, Dan Gamache, singled to right and scored Joseph when Daniel
Carbonell misplayed the ball. Hall (2-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in taking
the loss.
Senators right-hander Brady Dragmire closed out the game to earn his first save of the season
with a scoreless ninth inning.
It didn't take long for Harrisburg to get on the board after the three-day All-Star break. The
Senators struck for three hits and a pair of runs off of Slania in the first inning. Zach Collier led
off the game with a base hit and was nearly erased on a ground ball to second base. Richmond
was unable to turn a double play, allowing Drew Ward to double in the games' first run. Ward
came around to score when Richmond-native Alec Keller singled into right field.
Yadiel Hernandez made it a 3-0 Harrisburg lead with his sixth home run of the season.
Hernandez lined the first pitch of the second inning over the left field wall. Slania picked dup a
pair of groundouts and worked around a two-out single to finish the inning. The righty used 38
pitches over the first two frames
The Squirrels created a run to get on the board in the bottom of the second. Brandon
Bednar singled to open the frame and advanced to second on a passed ball. After Dylan
Davis pushed Bednar to third base on a fly out, Daniel Carbonell brought him home with a
sacrifice fly for a 3-1 score.
Harrisburg's Taylor Hill managed to keep Richmond off balance through the middle innings. Hill
worked around a base hit in the fourth and retired the side in order in the fifth. The righty
needed only 61 pitches over the first five innings in the contest.
The Senators pulled away in the sixth, scoring two more runs on three hits. Alec Keller started
the rally with a one-out single to left field and Hernandez followed with an RBI double off the
right field wall. Osvaldo Abreu added another run-scoring double, sneaking a bouncing ball
inside the third base bag for a 6-1 advantage
Slania lasted six innings in his 5th start of the year with Richmond. The burly right-hander
allowed six runs (five earned) on a season-high ten hits. Slania struck out four and did not walk
a batter in the no-decision.
Vic Black entered for Richmond to toss the seventh inning and retired all three batters he
faced. Hill nearly survived through seven innings, recording the first two outs in the seventh,
but unable to get the last one. Dylan Davis singled and Daniel Carbonell lashed a triple to make
it a 6-2 contest. Carlos Garcia then trimmed the deficit to 6-3 with a well-struck single into
center field. With Garcia at first base, Hill tossed an errant pickoff throw, allowing Garcia to
motor to third base. Following the error, Hill was replaced by Derek Eitel. A wild pitch brought
home Garcia for a 6-4 game.
Jarret Martin whiffed a batter in a scoreless eighth inning prior to Hall's appearance.
The Flying Squirrels continue a four-game homestand on Friday. RHP Tyler Herb will make the
start for Richmond against Harrisburg LHP Mathew Crownover. Individual tickets, mini plans

Wildness Costs Giants In 8-5 Loss
San Jose hurlers issue 10 walks, throw five wild pitches
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - The San Jose Giants were unable to hold an early three-run lead
on Thursday night as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rallied for an 8-5 victory at LoanMart
Field. The Quakes moved in front for the first time with a four-run bottom of the fifth and never
looked back en route to their second straight win to open the series. Giants pitching issued 10
walks and also uncorked five wild pitches in the loss.
Jonah Arenado (1-for-2, HR, RBI) smacked his eighth home run of the season in defeat for San
Jose. The Giants scored four runs over the first two innings, but were then held to just one hit
after the top of the second.
San Jose jumped out early scoring three times in the top of the first against Rancho Cucamonga
starter Adam Bray. Back-to-back one-out walks to Eduardo Nunez and Bryan Reynolds started
the rally before Aramis Garcia grounded an RBI double down the right field line for a 1-0
advantage. Ryan Howard followed with a sharp single into left plating Reynolds before Gio
Brusa hit a sacrifice fly to deep left extending the lead to 3-0.
Matt Krook started on the mound for the Giants and surrendered one run in the bottom of the
first as the Quakes trimmed the San Jose lead to 3-1. Zach McKinstry drew a leadoff walk
and advanced to third when Drew Jackson bounced a single into left. Luke Raley then drove
home the run with a groundout.
The Giants reclaimed their three-run cushion in the top of the second when Arenado led off
with a solo home run to left. San Jose though would manage only one more hit and three total
baserunners for the remainder of the contest.
McKinstry brought Rancho Cucamonga to within 4-2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the
third. Krook then pitched around a pair of walks in the fourth to maintain the two-run lead, but
would run into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Jackson started the pivotal fifth-inning rally
with a double into the left field corner before Raley walked. DJ Peters then grounded a single
up the middle to plate Jackson with the first run of the inning. The RBI hit prompted a pitching
change as Connor Kaden was summoned from the bullpen, but the Giants reliever walked
Keibert Ruiz on five pitches to load the bases. Kaden (2/3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) then
issued a four-pitch walk to Omar Estevez forcing home Raley to tie the game 4-4. Then with
Ibandel Isabel at the plate, Kaden threw a wild pitch allowing Peters to score for a 5-4 Quakes
lead. Kaden recovered to strikeout Isabel, but Brandon Montgomery followed with
a sacrifice fly to plate Ruiz to make it 6-4. Kaden then threw another wild pitch before a walk to
Ariel Sandoval led to a change on the mound. Heath Slatton was brought into pitch and he
struck out McKinstry, the ninth batter of the frame, to end the inning. Rancho Cucamonga
scored four runs on two hits and also took advantage of four walks and two wild pitches in the
bottom of the fifth.
San Jose cut the Quakes lead in half with a run in the top of the seventh, but stranded
the potential tying run in scoring position. With two outs, Arenado drew a walk and then
immediately scored when the next batter, Jalen Miller, doubled down the left field line. Miller's
double - the first Giants hit since the second inning - trimmed the Rancho Cucamonga lead to 6-
5. Ronnie Jebavy though followed by grounding out to third to end the inning.
The Quakes then extended their lead with single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth
innings before closing out the Giants. In the seventh, Estevez reached second base to leadoff
when his grounder to third was misplayed by John Polonius for an error. Isabel then singled up
the middle to plate Estevez for a 7-5 lead. An inning later, Will LaMarche (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1
BB, 0 SO) surrendered back-to-back singles to Jackson and Raley to start the inning. A LaMarche
wild pitch then advanced the runners to second and third before another wild pitch scored
Jackson to make it 8-5.
Dean Kremer retired all six batters he faced over perfect top of the eighth and ninth innings to
pick-up his second save of the year for Rancho Cucamonga.
Bray (4-2) earned the win after tossing five innings with four runs (all earned) allowed. He gave
up three hits, walked two and struck out four. After giving up four runs over the the first eight
batters, Bray retired 12 straight San Jose hitters to end his outing.
Krook (3-9) suffered the loss for the Giants. The left-hander was charged with five runs (all
earned) on six hits over four-plus innings of work. Krook matched a career-high with six walks
and struck out four during his 85-pitch outing.
