What an exciting year it has been here at TBA! Wonderful new programs, expansion of old ones, and great plans for next year. And of course, our ground-breaking donation system, which has caught the eye of every congregation in Westchester.
It’s no exaggeration to say that, at every Jewish event I’ve attended since we announced the change, I’ve been approached by members and staff of other congregations to ask me how it’s going. Many of them have been considering something like it, but they have been too afraid to go ahead with it. I am incredibly proud of our lay-leadership, for the thoughtful way they have approached this, and even more for having the wisdom, the vision – and the courage – to make the change.
There is a well-known midrash which says that when the Israelites were trapped at the Red Sea and Moses was asking God for help, only one man, Nachshon ben Aminadav, had the vision and courage to do what was needed. He stepped into the sea, and kept walking. When the water reached his chin, the sea split and the Israelites followed him through. While everyone else was crying and worrying, Nachshon took action.
Our officers and trustees, and indeed all of you who voted to go with this new donation system, as well as all of you who are participating so generously, are just like Nachshon. All the other congregations are worried about the demise of dues; we are the ones who have taken the plunge. We are leading the entire Westchester Jewish community into the future. This is truly an historic moment.
So what do I tell all of those other congregations who ask me how it’s going? I tell them the truth: it has been just amazing! We have trusted in the generosity of our membership, and you have come through with flying colors. Our donations rate so far is slightly ahead of last year’s dues billing. We’ve had several former members rejoin, and many more ask for the pledge sheet. Most importantly, we have made it possible for every member of TBA to feel good about their level of donation. I tell them that it is remarkable how many of you have said you are grateful for the change, and that it makes you feel more connected to the congregation. And I tell them that if they’re smart, they’ll follow our lead.
Such an important change should not go unacknowledged. I hope that, even if you don’t usually attend, you will join us this year for two important moments in the life of TBA. The first is our Annual Meeting, Tuesday, June 9 at 7:30pm It will be a chance to pass the budget, to thank and re-elect our leadership, and to celebrate our success with an ice cream social!
The second event is our Installation Shabbat, Friday June 12 at 7:30pm. Serving the Jewish

Notes from Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg
Shalom! I started my September bulletin article with one of my favorite songs, “Family” from one of my favorite musicals, Dreamgirls:
We are a family like a giant tree branching out of the sky We are a family, we are so much more than just you and I We are a family like a giant tree Growing stronger, growing wiser, we are growing free We need you, we are a family.
In Jewish thought, the tree is symbolic of the Torah and of the future. We call the Torah, etz chayim, the tree of life as it holds the stories, values, and laws we need to understand in order to live our lives. Honi ha-M’agel, Honi the Circle Maker, is reported to have told the story about an old man planting a carob tree. Honi knew that the man would not live long enough to eat the fruit of the tree and asked why the old man would bother. The man replied “When I was born into this world, I found many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren so they will be able to eat the fruit of these trees.” I consider TBA to be a family and love the image of us being a tree that is reaching to the sky, growing stronger, growing wiser, and building a future. As the song says, “We are so much more than just you and I,” and yet we wouldn’t exist without you.
When I wrote this in September I was planning a year filled with special musical services with the hope that I would introduce new melodies as well as add harmony to some of the melodies that are familiar to our worship setting. According to Wikipedia harmony, means “joint, agreement, concord”, “to fit together, to join”. Harmony is a lot like family; we need to join together to make it work.
I want to thank all of those who came to rehearsals and were with us during worship for adding their time, talent, and passion for music and worship for joining me on this journey. It has been great to get to know you better, to add my voice to yours, and to create meaningful worship.
As I begin to plan for next year I hope that you will join me to continue this journey. Your first opportunity is to join the High Holyday choir which will begin rehearsals on June 22 at 8:00pm. If you are interested in learning the melodies for the High Holydays, in learning harmony to enhance your worship experience, and in becoming part of another community at TBA we would love to have you. Please let me know if you are interested so that I can prepare music for you.
I am also working on programming for next year and would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
Have a wonderful summer and remember that your TBA home is always ready to welcome you.
L’shalom,
Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

Wow, I can’t believe that it is already the end of the school year and
my first year at TBA.
From the Director of Education 4Rabbi Allison Berlinger
The last few weeks of the year have been somewhat emotional for me. I remember how, on the first days of school this year, I looked out at all of these faces and maybe a few were familiar. Those familiar faces belonged to the people I met while interviewing. Yet, now in stark contrast as I look out at the faces in the last few days of school and I see my students and their parents, I have stories to go with each of them-some sort of history or connecting relationship. No longer do I look out and see strangers, rather I look out and see friends, colleagues, advisors, family. I see my community.
In thinking about the year, a smile plays across my face as I remember making 250 sandwiches for the midnight run with 1st grade and their parents. I think about the excitement the 2nd grade had in visiting the guests at the Hebrew Home, or the deliciousness of our Kindergarten students making bird feeders for birdies. I was amazed by the creativity our 3rd grade students and parents showed in creating together a carnival for our neighbors at La Association. The 4th grade could not have been more welcoming or charming when we received our guests from the Hebrew Home. 5th grade had beautiful weather for their awesome car wash and we loved their enthusiasm. 6th grade-wow-what an inspiration. Your commitment and dedication to the children of Hope’s Door is truly inspiring! THANK YOU ALL for working together, for inspiring us, and for helping to make our world a better place.
Some other highlights of the year were definitely studying the prophets with 4th grade families, learning about Israel with the 5th grade, studying Torah with 6th grade, weekly tefillah with 4th-7th grades, music with K, 1, 2, and 3 and hanging with the Hebrew High kids on Monday nights. All of it and so much more has really been great. I am excited for the coming year!
Thank you for all of your help and guidance during this year of transition and learning. I am truly grateful for the support and advice and really the tremendous amount of patience and help. Thank You all!!!!
Have a great summer!
Rabbi Allison,
Director of Education.

Phyllis Leary and I would like to thank all of our generous congregants for another successful year!
Our Fall events included the Backpack collection, Honey Drive and Yom Kippur Food Drive. Thank you to Joanne Loeb, Julie Gur and Phyllis Leary for running those programs. Many, many thanks to everyone who donated.
We hosted La Asociacion for Thanksgiving – thank you’s to Pam Parker and Jen Gold – and continued with our very meaningful Light One Candle program. And thank you to Jane Silverman for chairing the UJA Gift of Chanukah/Teen Undergarment Drive.
TBA was host to DOROT Westchester’s Winter Package Delivery Program again and we hope to continue the collaboration.
Tikkun Olam has many ongoing programs such as Adopt a Family, Senior Dinners, Midnight Run, Breakfast Run, Crafts for a Cause, the Blood Drive and Everyone Counts. These programs run because of dedicated volunteers: Jennefer Schiffman, Michelle Missry, Jane Silverman, Scott Freiman, Julie Gur, Joyce Licker, Toby Helfenstein, Judi
Markowitz and Herb & Melissa Baer. We couldn’t do it without them and also the many volunteers that continue to provide support for these programs.
Tikkun Olam had two new events: Volunteering at the Food Bank of Westchester and our first Pet Blessing & Pet Food Drive. We hope to continue them next year.
We have approximately 182 congregants and/or families on our email list. In the 2014-2015 calendar year meetings were held bi-monthly which we will continue in the future.
We are so thankful to be part of such a vibrant committee and again, send our thanks out to you, the congregants of Temple Beth Abraham.
I would also like to thank Phyllis Leary for being a wonderfully smart and supportive Tikkun Olam Co-Chair. Phyllis will be stepping down in June. These past two years have been rewarding, gratifying, and challenging and I could not have done them without her. Thank you Phyllis, for everything!

“Adopt a Family” La Asociacion
What is Adopt A Family? Each month “La Asociacion” selects a family that is going through a particularly difficult time. Two TBA families volunteer to
purchase a suggested list of supplies. The supplies are delivered to Jennefer Schifman’s home which is near TBA.
She delivers the supplies to the family in need. Cost? The cost seems to average
around $50.00 per family.
We would love to have some new families join us in the “Adopt a
Family” program.
Contact: Jennefer Schifman, TBA 914-631-1770
Crafts for a CauseOur meetings are on Fridays from 10:30am - 12:00 noon in Ardsley. We make beautiful things for various causes and at the same time have fun
knitting together. We have the supplies but any donations of yarn and knitting needles are always appreciated. For the
address, please RSVP to Joyce Licker: [email protected].
