Cup ChromosomesCarla and Carrie...Raising extraordinary kids in an ordinary world!

of

Carrie:School’s Out for SummerSchool is out and sum-

mer vacation has officiallystarted. This year I decided not

to send NooDy to sum-mer school. He has beenin therapy since he wasone-year-old and in theschool system since he wasthree-years-old. Every yearhe has participated in thesummer school program. My original plan this

year was for him to attendthese extra few weeks butthen I thought, "doesn'the deserve a full break likeall the other kids?" We are now into our

second week and I havereconsidered this decisionseveral times already. What was I thinking? Summer school at least

gave me a small reprievefrom the constant atten-tion that NooDy requires(more like demands). Myhouse has not been vacu-umed since he has beenhome and I have been

growled at every time I tryto get the most mundanechore done. This kid thinks my sole

purpose in this life is to ei-ther be his play partner, chef, and diaper changer. How dare I try to tidy upthe house or put somelaundry away? I have to admit the

other day when Wes gothome from work I was notmy cool and collected self.I was irritated that I wasbeing growled at and spitat, yes, you read the cor-rectly, SPIT AT, all becauseI was unloading the dish-washer. Wes came in thehouse and could see rightaway I was not happy. He took NooDy in the

other room and had a talkwith him about how he isnot a baby anymore and heis a "big boy" now. I con-tinued in the kitchengrateful for the lack ofbanging on the gate. While I finished the

dishwasher I sort of hadmy very own tiny pitty

party. I shed a few tearsout of frustration and thenI went into the living roomwhere they both were andexplained how I was feel-ing. I told Wes I was sorry

for my mood but it is hardto lose yourself. I thinkmost moms tend to feellike this when they havechildren but it is usuallyshort lived. I am "NooDy's mom."

That is who I am. I havedays that I really missbeing able to leave thehouse to go to work andhave adult conversations. I don't work because

there isn't a job out therethat would put up with meleaving as often as I wouldneed to leave for doctorappointments or to pickNooDy up from schoolbecause he got hurt. When Matt was little

he went through a timewhen he was depressedand we went to counselingwith him. The counselortold Wes and I that Matthad a classic case of onlychild syndrome and that

we spend too much timewith him. I looked at herlike she was crazy. All I could think is, he

is my son, I am supposedto spend time with him.Now 15 years later it ispretty funny how my per-ception has changed. We had small but fre-

quent breaks from Matt.Gram and Pop took himovernight often and theytook him on adventureswithout Wes and I. This is not the case

with NooDy. In nine yearsthe only nights I havespent away from him waswhen I was admitted tothe hospital for medicalreasons. This isn't any-one's fault but Wes andmyself. It is so scary to think of

NooDy going out withoutus. I know that he is notnearly as medically com-plex as some of ourfriends’ children. The factthat he can't communicatewith strangers scares thebejeezus out of me. Just this past week we

were at the Smokies base-

ball park and he let go ofmy hand and ran aboutfive feet ahead. Doesn'tsound like that big of adeal but I was almostpanic-stricken becausethere were so many peopleand he was out of my lineof sight for a few seconds. He was also panicking,

the minute he realized hecouldn't see me. But Icaught a glimpse of him inthe crowd just turning andturning singing "Mom." No one knew what he

was saying. What would happen if

I wasn't there just a fewseconds behind him? That is one of the reasonswe don't let him go with-out us. Well, this went way off

track from where I origi-nally thought I was goingto go with it. Sorry. I reallyhope this did not come offas my complaining. I am blessed beyond

belief with a wonderfulhusband and two fantasticboys and I do not takethat for granted to a sec-ond.
