Coalition(Continued from pg 1)
Williford kicked offthese reports by speakingfor the legislation and pol-icy action team. She noteda lot is going on in the leg-islative world, andtouched on a few upcom-ing and ongoing bills. Onebill in the works wouldgive rights to townshipsand parks and recreationcommittees to make cer-tain areas tobacco-free.This is an answer to elec-tronic smoking devices.Williford believed thereshould be one large bill, which would include bothelectronic devices and theusual suspects in the “to-bacco-free” places in Ten-nessee. Another pair of billswould regulate reports ontobacco compliancechecks, ensuring these re-ports would be available tothe public—and coali-tions—in a timely manner.Williford also said there isa bill which would de-crease the taxes on alco-hol, a quite significantdecrease as a matter offact. She reported this billhas not made it too farand is still in sub-commit-tee. One bill which hasbeen referred to a com-mittee, said Williford, would increase the penal-ties for fentanyl use and
sell. Another bill would re-quire schools to have onhand medications foroverdoses. Nalaxonewould be included in thatlist of potentially life-sav-ing medications present inschools. Williford also updatedthe coalition on the cur-rent goings-on of the com-munity awareness actioneam. The team is workingon the Count It, Lock It,Drop It Campaign, andthere are many publicitymaterials still available. The goal of the MonroeCounty Prevention andWellness Coalition is toget the word out about thecounty’s many drop-boxes.These drop-boxes are lo-cated at the MonroeCounty Sheriff ’s Depart-ment, the Tellico PlainsPolice Department, theSweetwater Police De-partment, and the Madis-onville PoliceDepartment. One may soon be lo-cated at the Walgreens aswell. Williford informedthe coalition the phar-macy had contacted theMonroe County Preven-tion and Wellness Coali-tion about potentiallypartnering for a Take-BackEvent during or near theDEA National Take-BackDay on April 29, 2017.Doing so would allowWalgreens to place a per-manent drop-box in the
store. The coalition mem-bers were in favor of sucha partnership. Williford spoke on thecampaign’s call to action tothe public. One such re-quest was for people notto flush their drugs. Thesemedications could changethe bacteria in septictanks, paving the way toan expensive fixer-upper.The drugs could also po-tentially get into the watersupply. Williford alsoasked people to make suretheir medicine was inac-cessible to others. Count-ing drugs—the “Count It”part of the campaign—could also allow people tonotice if there are any sus-picious changes to thenumber of pills. In the conclusion of thereport, Williford statedthe group is still workingon the next issue of Pre-vention Points. Crystal Russell spokefor the youth support andteen engagement actionteam. She stated CelebrateRecovery is going strong. It recently had suicide pre-vention training, and itsleaders are undergoingtraining programs. Thesoft launch for CelebrateRecovery is fast approach-ing, reported Russell, andthe organization is readyto recruit for other posi-tions. Celebrate Recoveryis also searching for localchurches willing to help
with food. Russell also spoke onthe local SADD clubs. They, too, continue to goon strong. She noted theSQHS SADD club ispreparing for “Kick Butts”day. The students areworking on a display forthe event. Blake McMeanswill also be visiting Sweet-water High School andTellico Plains HighSchool. Once an athleticstar, McMeans was badlyinjured in a drunk-drivingaccident. He is now aquadriplegic, and travelsto schools to tell his storyto students. Russell reported thecoalition had recentlytaken twenty students toNashville for the SADDleadership weekend. The
SADD club at SweetwaterHigh School is alsopreparing for its mock-trial and video on drunkdriving. Russell hoped tohave the SQHS SADDclub partner up with theSHS SADD club for thisevent. Russell next spoke onnalaxone. This medicationcan be used to reverse theeffects of deadly opiates—such as fentanyl—longenough to get help. Nalax-one has saved lives in thepast. At the moment, saidRussell, there is a blanketprescription at the statelevel. If someone is on ahigh level of opiates, thepharmacy can give thisperson nalaxone without adoctor’s prescription. The medication is cur-

rently free for schools. There is a cost of $75 fortwo doses for others suchas police departments.Russell stated she isspeaking with the localpolice chiefs about gettingnaxalone and training intothe hands of officers. Asshe said, nalaxone can beused to save lives fromoverdoses—accidental orotherwise—from opiates. This includes police offi-cers, who may come intocontact with dangerousdrugs as a result of doingtheir duties. And, yes, these drugsare currently in the Mon-roe County area. Andwhile it does not work foreveryone, training andavailability of naxalonecould help prevent moreloss of life. Williford then mo-tioned that TammieGeorge be granted the po-
sition of Chairperson ofthe Monroe County Pre-vention and WellnessCoalition. Jackie Harrisseconded the motion, andit carried with all ayes. Williford next said therecent Monroe on theMove Expo was a hugesuccess. So was the Mon-roe County Boxing Club’sRumble, which proved tobe a good sponsorship forthe coalition, said Willi-ford. The coalition also dis-cussed the upcomingSADD camp. It is set forMay 30 through June 3.This year, said Williford, the coalition is doingSADD sponsorships. Asponsorship would help astudent attend the camp, and additional sponsor-ships would allow them totake part in extra-curricu-lar activities such as zip-lining and horseback
riding. One of the goals ofSADD camp, said Willi-ford, is to teach local kidswhat safe fun they canhave locally. For those wishing tosponsor a student for theSADD camp, just visit theSADD club’s page at thecoalition’s website: mon-roehealth.org. These do-nations are tax-deductible.The goal is to take forty
kids to SADD camp. However, as Willifordpointed out, there is noshortage of kids whowould like to attendSADD camp. With nothing more todiscuss, the meeting cameto an end at 12:49 p.m.
Monroe County Vaulting Team were a highlight ofthe “Monroe on the Move” health and wellnessexpo hosted by Monroe County Health Council. Ka-trian Sherwood, Mattie Smith, and MichaelaNichols perform amazing stunts with smiling faces.
