Friday Night

The Darkness

Camera

Throughout the entire music video very little of the other band members is shown. This emphasises the importance that the band puts on the lead singer.

Whenever the entire line up is shown, the lead singer is shot in the centre of the shot. This again emphasises the importance shown here.

Even when the band are not also shown, the lead singer is in the centre of the shot.

Important parts of the song addressed directly to the viewer are given a close up shot of the lead singer.

Sound

Very little sound, with the exception of the soundtrack, is heard throughout the music video. Only at the beginning is there any use of non-soundtrack music.

This could tie in with the theme of the song which is someone falling out of love with someone they used to sit in school with and it represents the person maturing from being infatuated (represented by the waves) to becoming their own person (as emphasised by the soundtrack.)

Mise En Scene

Throughout the entire music video there is a stereotypical Hawaiian/Tropical Island theme as represented by the costumes and the scenery.

This could be shown as being related to the subject matter of the song as they’re away from what they’ve always known (the girl they love) and are unable to cope and are therefore killed by those who are used to it.

Also shown is the band’s hapless attempts to change the threatening island back to what they know (building a boat/bike etc.)

The maturity is also represented here by how the band begin to look more and more bedraggled as the island and the unknown begins to drag them down.

Editing Very little editing is actually

used in the video and bases itself on using quick cuts between sequences.

These sequences are also in time with the music itself (When he mentions table tennis and biking etc.)

The quick cuts could be used to represent the fear of the band at being somewhere new.
