FRIENDS FOR LEARNING COURSE CATALOG Fall 2016 Friends For Learning (FFL) is a member-driven organization for people 50 years and older. The purpose of FFL is to provide, at minimal cost, activities, special events, and opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to continue their intellectual growth and enjoy being part of a like-minded community. Registration You can register August 24 by clicking on the Registration button on the FFL web site. The $20 membership fee will be paid by credit or debit card as part of the registration process before you enroll in classes. To register online each member must have his or her own email address. The membership fee covers all classes for the entire semester plus a parking pass for University Place. Activities range from skiing, snowshoeing, camping, biking, canoeing, horseback riding, or whatever you might like to do indoors or outdoors. We are guided by member ideas and might try anything.

Tour the Gallery and Fossil/artifact collection at the Idaho Museum of Natural History. This is a great opportunity to see what is in the Museum's Gallery and collections (typically 10 times more than what is on display) with the curators of these fossils, artifacts, herbs and other materials. We will visit the Gallery and the Herbarium, Vertebrate Paleontology and Anthropology collections. Only 40 students will be enrolled in this class. Entrance fee will be paid at the Museum. The Museum is located at 698 Dillon St, Pocatello. This is a limited class of 40.

When: every Fri. 12/16 9:00-10:00 Location: Senior Citizen Center

Come and learn how to line dance. Good exercise, good fun, good for memory, good for laughs. No experience necessary. Just come and enjoy. We will teach you how. Join us for an hour each week as we learn basic and intermediate dance routines. You will be amazed how good you feel and how many benefits you will gain from this class. The Senior Citizen's Center is located at, 535 W. 21st.

Credentials: Adele George, Lianne Buxton, Lesley Cable, and Molly Brinkerhoff will be teaching. Adele, Lesley, and Lianne have many years of experience and have owned their own studios in the past. Molly has been teaching line dancing to FFL students for several years.

Three lovers of Spanish study, Earline Reid, Joy Hubbel and Jackie Christiansen, will work hard to make your introduction to Spanish enjoyable and fruitful as we explore speaking Spanish right from the start through storytelling. This Reading and Pronunciation Class will add TPRS, a method of second-language teaching that uses stories to provide vocabulary and immediate understanding leading to actually speaking the language. The Senior Citizen's Center is located at 535 W. 21st. Limited to 20.

Credentials: Earline spent seven years living and working in Latin America and 15 years teaching English to speakers of other languages. Joy is a retired teacher who worked with immigrant Hispanic children. Jackie has participated in several Spanish-language classes.

This weekly class meets for 12 weeks. Those who have taken the class previously have first preference. Books used will be: (1) Spanish for Gringos Level Two by William C. Harvey 2nd edition (2) Spanish Verb Tenses 2nd edition by Dorothy Richmond. Both oral and written activites will be used. The Senior Citizen's Center is located at 535 W. 21st.The class size is limited to 20.

Credentials: Perla Delgado is originally from Mexico and holds a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. She is bilingual using both Spanish and English. She has been enrolled in multiple classes to learn syntax and grammar in Spanish and English.

Tai Chi is a form of exercise that evolved from a Chinese Martial Art. In this class we learn Section 1 of T.Y Pang'sYang style Tai Chi. The movements are slow and low impact. They are designed to build up the body's innerenergy, which improves circulation, balance and overall health. Videos will be available and practice at home isimportant. This bi-weekly class will focus on safe Yoga for those over 50. It will use techniques of B.K.S. Iyengar focusing on posture and breath. Students will need a yoga mat. Blocks and strap are optional. The class includes floor work so students need the ability to get up and down frequently. The Good Samaritan Chapel is located at 840 E. Elva. Limited to 16.

Credentials: Dino is a retired Archeologist. She has taken Yoga classes for the past five years. She taught the class last semester and it was wonderful.

4155 AIDS Quilts Tour Instructor: Jennifer Walton Fee:

In this class we will tour the HIV/AIDS Quilt project at the Elks Lodge. About 50 3-to-6 foot quilt panels from Southeastern Idaho and another 200 from around the country will be displayed. You will view this poignant reminder of our children's lives that have been cut short by HIV/AIDS and learn about the current status of this scourge. The Elk's Lodge is located at 640 E Elva St.

Credentials: Jennifer Walton is a case worker with the Eastern Idaho Public Health Department. Representatives from Breaking Boundaries will also be present to discuss the Quilt and AIDS in Southeastern Idaho.

Have you ever considered a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world? This couple will share the experiences of their dream trip that visited 9 countries on 6 continents and completely circumnavigated the world in one continuous trip. See sights and hear experiences from Peru, Italy, South Africa, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Australia, and New Zealand during their presentation.

Students will learn a basic American Indian hand, bead weaving technique using small seed beads. The project will be a bookmark about one and one half inches by five inches and may include fringes. Since the beads and needle are small, a magnifying glass might be useful. Beads, thread, patterns, and needles will be provided. Additional information will be given to enrolled students. This class is limited to 12.

Credentials: David learned loomwork in Boy Scout and a Shoshone technique from Sidney Hoopes. He is self taught in other techniques including peyote stitch and square stitch.

Transform a 2 liter Coke (must be a Coke bottle) into a decorative and useful box. Students need to bring an empty 2 liter Coke or Diet Coke bottle, scissors and decorative napkins. We will concentrate on reviewing many of the elements on the "Ribbon" to enhance our ability to use Word's powerful editing and revising tools. You will be using Microsoft Word 2016 in the computer lab. Class is limited to 18 students

Learn about the Idaho Falls Zoo's role in conserving natural habitats and endangered species throughout the world. Explore the new Quarters for Conservation program, SAFE (a new Association of Zoos and Aquariums program that stands for Saving Animals From Extinction), and see the endangered animals at the zoo. Class limit 60.

Credentials: Sunny Katseanes earned a BS degree in zoology from Idaho State University and served as the Idaho Falls Zoo's first year-round educator from 1999-2005. She was a Communication Specialist with the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project and Education Director at the Museum of Idaho. She rejoined the Zoo in January 2015 as Curator of Education.

Knowing how to administer CPR and First Aid is vitally important. Understanding why will help you recall these skills when needed. Terry will make this class fun and comprehensible.No certification will be available at the class, but opportunities to sign up to take certification test and hands-on portion will be available. The classes that come from this talk will be shorter due to the information covered in this presentation. The cost for the Friends for Learning presentation will be free, and the certification course will be offered to Friends for Learning participants at a significant price reduction.

4164 Creating Middle East Nation-States Instructor: Zackery Heern Fee:

The impact of World War One on the Middle East is tremendous! The end of the war signaled the fall of the great Ottoman Empire, which had ruled most of the Middle East and Eastern Europe for 500 years. Much of the Middle East became directly controlled by the French and British empires, which created new states. Come learn how the Middle East countries were created after WWI.

Credentials: Zackery Heern is a professor in the Department of History at Idaho State University. Dr. Heern specializes in Middle East and Islamic history and his research and teaching interests include Iran, Iraq, modern Islamic movements. A mounting body of research finds that when our connections with the natural world are broken, we suffer physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. In this class we will learn about this “nature deficit disorder,” the symptoms and physical and emotional impacts on people who live sedentary and digitally focused lifestyles. We will also learn about nature’s capacity for renewal, discovery, and overall well-being.

Credentials: Garth serves as Forest Supervisor of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. He has dedicated much of his time as a Forest Service leader in establishing community coalitions to reconnect youth with nature.

When Mashaal Hijazi moved to Idaho, she was shocked to learn that we are 49th in education and 50th in political influence in the nation. In this class she will discuss the relationship between education, racism and political power.

Credentials: Mashaal is Director of Diversity at Idaho State University, a radio show host and newspaper reporter. Born in San Francisco to Pakistani parents, she has first-hand experience with the problems of systematic racism.

4167 Elements of a False Confession Instructor: Rene Miller Fee:

This presentation will be on the Chris Tapp murder case. Over a period of several weeks Chris was interrogated concerning the 1996 Angie Dodge murder. He eventually confessed and was convicted of her murder. In this class we will learn about the investigation, how and why Chris Tapp confessed to the crime and why many people question his confession.

4169 Fishing on Kodiak Island Instructor: Bruce Staples Fee:

In late August to early October, many streams and still waters along the Kodiak road system teem with silver salmon. From the Buskin River, just outside the town of Kodiak, to the Pasagshak River 35 miles south on the road system, the fly-fisher has opportunity to encounter fresh silvers ranging to more than 20 pounds and loaded with energy. This 45-minute slide program reveals where success is most likely along the road system and what tackle is best suited for achieving it.

Credentials: Bruce is a member of the Upper Snake River Fly Fishers of Rexburg and the Snake River Cutthroats of Idaho Falls. He is a driving force behind the East Idaho Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Exposition and originated its concept. He has demonstrated his fly tying skills on an international basis. He has taught all skill levels of fly tying for over 20 years.

Douglass Owen, longtime Park Ranger, Naturalist and Geologist at the Craters of the Moon National Monument will present the geological story underpinning Craters of the Moon and the connection of this story to the "hot spot" that is now under Yellowstone National Park.

In this class we will tour the Idaho Falls Area Humanitarian Center, which is a nondenominational center serving more than 120 non-profit agencies from St. Anthony to Pocatello and Salmon. When you visit the Center, you will see men, women and youth volunteers in action making quilts, painting wooden toys, braiding jump ropes, crocheting booties, and many more activities. This Humanitarian Center is the only one of its kind in the world. The Humanitarian Center is located at 1415 Northgate Mile.

In 1859 John Brown led a small group of volunteers into Virginia to seize a federal arsenal. Brown's plan was to arm slaves and to establish a fortified escape route for slaves to be able to safely get to Canada. Was this action consistent with the core principles of the U.S. Revolution? The audience will be able to render a judgment of Brown's proper place in history.

This class shows Medicare beneficiaries how to use the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) to select their own prescription drug plan. Medicare beneficiaries are shown, on a step-by-step basis, how to navigate this website and enter their medications, select a pharmacy, refine their results, and with the end result being the three most cost effective drug plans that cover their medications.

Credentials: For 10 years Carrie has been assisting individuals in selecting their own Medicare Prescription drug plans. She provides this service as a volunteer for SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) with the Department of Insurance. She volunteers for Freemed and the Department of Health and Welfare and provides this service at these agencies. Prior to that she worked for the Department of Health and Welfare for 34 years, the last 13 as the Program Manager for Medical and Financial Assistance for the nine Eastern Idaho counties.

Shayna is from Shelley, but decided she needed some adventure in her life, so went to Nepal as a midwife. Her husband proposed to her at Base Camp on Mount Everest. In this class you will learn about her exciting adventures in Nepal.

Credentials: 2010 Shayna became certified Doula and started attending births. After completing the required classes via correspondence with the National College of Midwifery she became a licensed Certified Professional Midwife in February of 2014. She then left for Bangladesh. After eight months there she traveled to Nepal, where she worked educating and teaching for three months. She currently has her own private practice, Core Midwifery.

4190 School Bags Humanitarian Project Instructor: Betty E. Anderson Fee:

This is an annual humanitarian project for FFL. Major disasters continue to happen in the U.S. and the world. There are many disaster centers in the US that provide a variety of kits to help people anywhere in the world affected by major disasters. Volunteers are needed to help keep these centers filled with the various kits so they are available when disaster strikes. A school bag containing basic supplies is one kit that many of us can help provide. Join us to help cut fabric, donate sturdy fabric and other sewing supplies, sew bags and/or donate school supplies or money. The bags will be sewed by volunteers and completed by Nov. 2016. They will then be taken to a distribution center in Salt Lake City. Major disasters keep happening so please join us! The church is located at 237 N. Water.

Credentials: Betty has served in disaster centers in several locations and served in foreign countries where disasters have affected the lives of many people. She knows the needs are great. She has been in charge of this FFL project for many years.

4193 Solo Trek to the South Pole Instructor: Aaron Linsdau Fee:

Experience Antarctica with a polar explorer. Aaron Linsdau is only the second American to have skied alone to the South Pole and holds the world record for the longest expedition from Hercules Inlet to the Pole. Come and learn about Antarctica and what’s it like to be alone for three months.

Credentials: Aaron is an Eagle Scout, holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, and a master's degree in computational science. He has snow shoed across Yellowstone National Park in winter, crossed the Greenland tundra alone, and has trekked through the Sahara desert. He wrote the book Antarctic Tears, produced a documentary on the expedition, and is a commercial photographer.

The instructor will teach from the deck, not in the water. More advanced swimmers will benefit, too, with different training in a different lane. There will be six classes. County residents will have to pay $19.50. Payment will be made at the pool. The class size is limited to 15. The Aquatic Center is located at 149 7th Street.
