Winfrey Maxine R. Winfrey, 84, Des Moines, Iowa, sister of Mildred Gutsch and Melvin (Patricia) Lohr of Goodland, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Trinity Center in Des Moines. She was born on Aug. 1, 1923, to Louis and Tillie (Luken) Lohr at Kanorado. She married Irvin Win- frey of Burlington Oct. 15, 1942. The couple moved to Des Moines in 1948. Mrs. Winfrey was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 56 years and was involved in many church activities. Preceding her in death was her parents and a brother, Kenneth Lohr. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, David (Renee) Winfrey of Barnhart, Mo., and Bruce Winfrey of Des Moines; a daughter, Connie (Bob) Wells of Sheboygan, Wis.; another sister, Evelyn (Eugene) Davis of Burl- ington; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Service were held at the church on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007. Hospital auxiliary wins award for year Anita Coleman (left), Debbie Lucas and Shelby Miller The Goodland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary received the Gold Award of Excellence at the Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas convention. Auxiliary President Deb Lucas with members Anita Coleman and Shelby Miller got the award on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Hyatt Re- gency Hotel in Wichita. The group helped with the annual health fair, cancer screenings and the Slice of Life Benefit Golf Tournament. They also recognized the hospital staff during National Hospital Week. Fund raising projects included a potato bar in March. The group donates money to buy equipment and materials for different depart- ments. The award is given to auxilia- ries that donate to a health career scholarship, are involved in a health related community service, sponsor special projects and other activities. Nov. 11 — 8:02 a.m., 1000 Texas Ave., a 1992 Mitsubishi driven by Elizabeth Hernandez was going south on Texas when a 1993 Dodge driven by Michael Charles McGlone failed to yield and hit the Mitsubishi in the left rear quarter panel. Nov. 13 — 5:39 p.m., 600 Caldwell Ave., a 2005 Chrysler driven by Melton Lynn Durham was waiting to enter the intersection when the car was hit from behind by a 1981 Ford driven by Arden D. Schneider. Nov. 19 — 7:20 a.m., 1500 Center Ave., a 1985 Ford driven by Joann J. Busse was traveling north on Center and was hit in the intersection of Center and 15th. The car that hit Busse has not been found. Moines, Iowa, sister of Mildred Gutsch and Melvin (Patricia) Lohr of Goodland, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Trinity Center in Des Moines.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, David (Renee) Winfrey of Barnhart, Mo., and Bruce Winfrey of Des Moines; a daughter, Connie (Bob) Wells of Sheboygan, Wis.; another sister, Evelyn (Eugene) Davis of Burl-ington; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Service were held at the church on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.

Hospital auxiliarywins award for year

The Goodland Regional Medical Center Auxiliary received the Gold Award of Excellence at the Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas convention.

Auxiliary President Deb Lucas with members Anita Coleman and Shelby Miller got the award on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Hyatt Re-gency Hotel in Wichita. The group helped with the annual health fair, cancer screenings and the Slice of Life Benefit Golf Tournament. They also recognized the hospital staff during National Hospital Week.

Fund raising projects included a potato bar in March. The group donates money to buy equipment and materials for different depart-ments.

The award is given to auxilia-ries that donate to a health career scholarship, are involved in a health related community service, sponsor special projects and other activities. The Goodland auxiliary has earned the award for the last seven years.

“We are getting ready for our annual potato bar in March,” said Auxiliary President Lucas. “It has been very successful for us.”

“The auxiliary has changed a lot in the last few years,” she said. “We are doing so much more than just giving out juice.”

meeting of the Ruleton Eager Bea-vers was Saturday, Oct.13, at the 4-H building. President Devin Mangus called the meeting to order. Roll call was “What is your favorite candy?” and was answered by 18 members, four leaders, seven par-ents and four guests.

Unfinished business was that the council members had been asked that the due date for record books and KAAs be returned October 1.

New business was the election of officers with president being Devin Mangus; vice president Adam Duell; secretary Sydney Winston; treasurer Mindi Keith; parliamen-tarian Corbin Townsend; reporter Chelsie Gausman; 4-H council members Devin Mangus, Michael Johnson and Winston; song leaders Dani Mangus, Nicole Sederstrom

and Saige Vandiver; historians Keith and Kathy Wood; and lead-ers, Coleen and Steve Duell, Amy Sederstrom, Kevin and Barb Win-ston; and recreation leaders, Skyler Thompson and Sierra Vandiver.

The program had Dani Mangus singing a song called “She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain when She Comes” with Devin Mangus accompanying her on the guitar. Nicole gave a demonstration on how to saddle a horse and Blaine demon-strated how to make toy equipment and farm. Holly Wilkening gave a project talk on we’re going to the dogs.

Cody Hooker led the club in the balloon game.

Announcements were: Nov. 1 - enrollment due, Nov. 2 - officer training, Nov. 4 - Achievement Awards Banquet and Nov. 10 - next meeting.

Refreshments were provided by the Mangus family.

The program had Dani Mangus, Saige Vandiver and Sierra Vandiver leading the club in a song called “God Bless America” with Devin Mangus accompanying them on the guitar. Sydney Winston gave a project talk on horse colors. And to wrap it up, Devin Mangus gave his speech for the Voice of Democracy Contest.

Announcements were that the next meeting would be Genesis.

Refreshments were served by the Duell family.

Nov. 8 — 12:07 p.m., 100 W. 11th, a 2004 GMC driven by Janet A. Redlin was backing out of a parking stall and hit a 1991 Honda driven by Jennifer R. Freeman.

Nov. 11 — 8:02 a.m., 1000 Texas Ave., a 1992 Mitsubishi driven by Elizabeth Hernandez was going south on Texas when a 1993 Dodge driven by Michael Charles McGlone failed to yield and hit the Mitsubishi in the left rear quarter panel.

Nov. 13 — 5:39 p.m., 600 Caldwell Ave., a 2005 Chrysler driven by Melton Lynn Durham was waiting to enter the intersection

when the car was hit from behind by a 1981 Ford driven by Arden D. Schneider.

Nov. 19 — 7:20 a.m., 1500 Center Ave., a 1985 Ford driven by Joann J. Busse was traveling north on Center and was hit in the intersection of Center and 15th. The car that hit Busse has not been found. Both vehicles left the scene.

6:41 p.m., 800 Sherman Ave., a 1993 Mercury driven by Samantha Raymer was traveling west on Eighth and hit the rear of a 2000 Ford driven by Dusti R. Chadwick who was stopped on Eighth and signaling to make a left turn facing west.

The Carnegie Arts Center’s annual Christmas home tour will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sun-day. A barbershop quartet will perform. Tickets are on sale at the center for $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Carriage rides are available for $5.

The Northwest Kansas Techni-

cal College Engineering Tech-nology Program is having its annual Bull Fry starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 7th and Caldwell. For ages 13 and up the cost is $10 and 6 to 12 $7.

Carriage ride tours of the Handy House and the Carnegie Arts Center will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 8, 15 and 22. Tickets are $12. Proceeds will go the Sherman County His-torical Society and Goodland Arts Council.

Jodie Tubbs of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Af-fairs will be in Goodland from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Thursday in the Assembly Room on the third floor of the courthouse to help veterans and dependents with claims.
