    Introduction

    This is one of my mini-guides that can be used as a quick reference guide for

    a

    specific aspect of any Harvest Moon or Rune Factory game. Sunshine Islands

    has many of the same characters as Island of Happiness and those who do

    appear

    in both games tend to have the same birthdays, Most Favourites and otherlikes

    and dislikes in both.

    Nonetheless, there are differences and a separate Character Guide as well as

    Courtship and Marriage Guide thus is mandated for each.

    This Courtship and Marriage Guide contains specific sections for every

    Eligible

    Bachelor and Girl in Sunshine Islands. Information includes Birthdays, Most

    Favourite Gifts, other Likes and Dislikes, the schedule of Heart Events and

    Rival Heart Events and the actual Text of these Events.

    For sections that deal with all characters, including those who are not

    eligible for marriage, please l refer to my Sunshine Islands Characters Guide

    devoted strictly to those two aspects of the lives of the Eligible

    Girls/Bachelors.

    single cartridge. There is a 'boy's game' and a 'girl's game', depending on

    whether you choose to play a male or female character. The actual characters

    are the same in both versions, but their roles obviously are very different.

    If your character is a girl, your male peers will be Eligible Bachelors and

    the females will be your Rivals. If your character is a boy, your female

    peers will be Eligible Girls and the males will become your Rivals. In this

    Guide, Eligible Bachelors are listed first, followed by Eligible Girls. This

    follows the official order of characters in your Assets List if your

    character

    is a girl but not if he is a boy.

    Obviously, Rival Heart Events will be the same, whatever your character's

    gender, but Heart Events will be very different. Rival Heart Events for

    each

    couple will be listed twice, both in the section for the Eligible Girl

    involved and in the section that deals with the Eligible Bachelor as well.

    Those players familiar with Island of Happiness will recognise most of the

    Eligible Girls and Bachelors in Sunshine Islands. There are a couple of

    exciting new characters, however.

    Most of the major characters can be encountered on the 1st day that you are

    allowed to leave your Farm, which is 2 Spring. The items available at the

    market initially include all the grains that were so difficult to unlock in

    IoH.

    Embarking upon a Courtship

    Whether you wish to court an Eligible Girl/Bachelor or simply make a new

    friend, it is 'meeting and greeting' an individual regularly that is most

    important in Sunshine Islands. In fact, a Character will not accept any

    Gifts

    whatsoever from you until you have introduced yourself AND spoken to him/her

    regularly for a few days.

    When you first meet a Character, he/she will not accept any Gifts from you.

    It is considered improper to do so. People will tell you that they 'need to

    know you better' or that they do not 'need' the item you offer. It therefore

    is perceived somewhat as a favour to YOU as well as a sign of friendship when

    an individual accepts any Gift.

    The only exception is that, in the early Spring in the first year, a

    Character

    will accept a Gift on his/her Birthday even if that individual would continue

    to reject Gifts from you on any other day. This is why Vaughn will accept a

    Birthday Gift on 3 Spring when other Characters continue to reject Gifts fromyou still.

    Furthermore, even if a Character accepts Gifts from you, neglect will cause

    him/her later to reject anything you offer, even if it is a 'Most Favourite

    Gift'.

    Players of Island of Happiness will be familiar with the effects of social

    neglect, although Sunshine Islands differs in the initial requirement for

    accepting a Gift. In Island of Happiness, a new acquaintance would accept a

    Gift immediately. In Sunshine Islands, social protocol dictates that the

    Character not accept any Gifts from strangers!

    Finally, you have a 30% risk of losing 100 Friendship Points with any

    individual you fail to greet on any given day. This makes it vital that you

    try to 'meet and greet' every one as regularly as possible.

    While you are restricted to walking as your sole means of transport on any

    Island and Kirk's boat for travel to and from the Islands, performing social

    rounds can be extremely time-consuming. Fortunately, as soon as your income

    reaches 100,000G, the Teleport Stone will appear at Chen's Shop. The

    Teleport

    Stone really is a necessity rather than a luxury item in a world where

    failing

    to speak to every one daily can result in a decrease in Friendship.

    The Teleport Stone has specific destinations and will not give you 'door to

    door' service. Other items that are of great help in your social

    interactions

    therefore are the Turbo Shoes and the Time-Slowing Ring. As you cannot ride

    your Horse in Sunshine Islands, the only way to increase your speed is by

    equipping the Turbo Shoes. By equipping the Time-Slowing Ring as well, youwill be able to make all of your daily 'meeting and greeting' Visits without

    consuming your entire day in doing so.

    The Value of Dialogue

    Speaking to any Character on a daily basis will increase Love and/or

    Friendship

    slowly but surely. You gain 100 Friendship Points with any individual simply

    by speaking to him/her. There are other advantages to regular dialogue. You

    will find that a Character's conversation will be different at every

    location.

    In most locations, however, that dialogue will remain constant irrespective

    of the individual's Heart Level. It usually is when the Character is at home

    that his/her dialogue will change according to Heart Level. Furthermore, it

    is at home that individuals tend to confess details about their own past,

    likes and dislikes or other personal matters. Although the point value of

    'meeting and greeting' some one is the same no matter where you encounter

    him/her, you often obtain the best information when you visit a Character at

    his/her home.

    The Value of Gifts

    In Sunshine Islands as in most Harvest Moon games, Gifts can increase ordecrease Heart Levels in terms of Love and/or Friendship. A Gift of an item

    that an individual loves will boost Heart Levels but a Gift of a detested

    item

    will lower them! It therefore is vital to pay attention to a Character's

    specific likes and dislikes. Both this Guide and my Characters Guide provide

    details about each individual's likes and dislikes.

    Birthdays are important occasions for gift-giving in any Harvest Moon game.

    Gift of a favourite item on an individual's Birthday is worth far more in

    terms of Heart Level increase than the same item given on an ordinary day.

    Sunshine Islands rewards friendship with more benefits than most other

    Harvest

    Moon games. You can obtain special items as rewards.

    When you have given any individual five favoured Gifts, you will receive the

    Gift of a Sun Stone in return. A 'favoured Gift' in this sense is any item

    that is received 'with music'. When you reach 2 Hearts with the owner of

    any

    House/Business, you will receive a Sun Stone as well. It is possible that

    you

    must receive the 'personal' Sun Stone in some cases before the 'owner' Sun

    Stone event will trigger.

    Note that you MUST receive any and all Sun Stones that any Eligible

    Girl/Bachelor has to offer if you wish to marry him/her. Ordinarily, as the

    Gifts of these Sun Stones is based on Friendship/Heart Levels, you will

    receive them in the natural course of Events. If, however, for some reason,

    you fail to visit the Individual when he/she is at home, you may miss one of

    the Sun Stone Events, thereby creating an impediment to your marriage.

    Sun Stones are at the very foundation of Sunshine Islands. You need to

    obtain

    all of them in any case in order to complete the plot. The reason why you

    need to obtain the 'owner' Sun Stone from any individual who has his/her own

    home, whether it is a house, tent or ship is that, after marriage, he/she no

    longer will live there and the Event therefore no longer can be triggered.

    Finally, when you reach 7 Hearts or Yellow Heart Level with any individual,

    you

    will receive a special Birthday Gift from that Character if you speak to

    him/her on your Birthday. The only exceptions are Haila, Nick and your own

    Child. Each Character gives a different Gift and many of them are rare or

    valuable items. For example, Will's Gift can be a Firefly Flower or Red Magic

    Flower and Shea's Gift can be a Truffle.

    Each Character can give one of three possible Gifts chosen randomly. The

    complete list is given in the section devoted to your Birthday.

    Friendship Point values for every action are provided in another section

    that

    follows.

    Friendship Point Values

    The following are the actions that will increase or decrease Friendship with

    an

    individual with their point values:

    Actions that increase Friendship/Affection:

    Meeting and Greeting an Individual on any ordinary day: 100 points

    Meet and Greet any Individual during a Festival: 400 points

    Show any Individual an Animal he/she loves: 100 points

    Give a Gift an Individual likes: 100 point to 800 points depending on the

    Gift

    Give a Birthday Gift an individual likes: 300 points to 2400 points

    Actions that decrease Friendship/Affection:

    Neglecting to meet and greet an Individual on any ordinary day: -100 points*

    *You have a 30% chance of losing Friendship with any individual. This

    decrease will not occur 70% of the time.

    Showing any individual an Animal he/she dislikes: -100 points

    Give an Gift an individual dislikes: -300 to -5000 points

    Littering on an individual's home island or on Meadow Island: -100 points

    Littering inside an individual's dwelling: -300 points

    As you can see, if you are diligent with a daily 'Meeting and Greeting'

    ritual

    that includes all characters on all the Islands, you will raise Friendship

    levels even if you never give a single Gift. Social interactions are

    extremely important in Sunshine Islands.

    Friendship and Festivals

    In most Harvest Moon games, there are both Romantic Festivals and Festivalsassociated with Friendship in the sense that dialogue and even the Events

    during the Festival will vary depending on your degree of Friendship with

    participants.

    Speaking to any individual at ANY Festival will increase your Friendship

    Level,

    so it always is important to speak to every one at Meadow Island during any

    Festival or animal Contest Event. In some cases, the Festival will end

    abruptly after you speak to the organiser, so it always is best to speak to

    every one BEFORE you speak to the organiser of the Contest or Festival Event.

    In the case of any Festival where you have an opportunity to speak to other

    attendees both before and after the main Event, you will not gain extra

    Friendship points by doing so but you will experience different dialogues

    from

    each!

    In Sunshine Islands, the participation of other characters in the Snow

    Festival

    is determined by Friendship Levels. No Bachelors or Eligible Girls apart

    from

    Alisa will attend this Festival. The object of the Festival is to build a

    snowman with Gannon. Any character who is at 6 Hearts or above will accept

    your invitation to join in the project. Any character below 6 Hearts will

    refuse your invitation. The size of the Snowman built depends on the number

    of individuals who build it.

    The Fireworks Festival is a Romantic Festival to some extent. The Fireworksdisplay will occur even if you do not have any Eligible Girl/Bachelor at

    sufficient heart level to watch with you, but you can experience a special

    little Romantic Event if any Eligible Girl/Bachelor is at 6 Hearts or higher.

    You then will have the opportunity to watch the display with any Eligible

    Girl/Bachelor who has reached that Heart Level. Otherwise, you will watch it

    with Gannon.

    A Festival that is even more Romantic is the Harvest Goddess Festival. All

    the

    Girls perform a special Dance in honour of the birthday of the Harvest

    Goddess. If any Eligible Girl/Bachelor is at Green Heart Level, you will

    obtain an option on the previous day to escort or be escorted to the Festival

    Dance.

    Single Path of Heart Events

    In terms of Courtship, there is only one single 'path' of Heart Events,

    making

    Sunshine Island similar to other Harvest Moon games and distinguishing it

    from

    Island of Happiness, where the response you gave during the course of any

    Heart Event would alter your future path. In other words, in Island of

    Happiness, there were multiple Heart Events at each of the traditional Heart

    Event Levels as well as a special 'Recovery' Event if you gave an

    unacceptable

    response during the Yellow or 4th Heart Event. In Sunshine Islands, there is

    only 1 Purple Heart Event, 1 Blue Heart Event, 1 Green Heart Event and 1

    Yellow Heart Event for each of the Eligible Girls or Bachelors.

    As in Island of Happiness, most Eligible Bachelors/Girls will display a Heart

    in their portraits that will change colour as their Affection/Love Levels

    change but there are two 'secret' Bachelors/Girls who are eligible for

    marriage and yet who do not display the Portrait Heart. They are the same

    characters in both of the Island Harvest Moon games. If your character is a

    Girl, the 'secret' Bachelor is Shea. If your character is a Boy, the

    'secret'

    Eligible Girl is the Witch Princess.

    Note that there is one Eligible Girl who is elible for Courtship but not for

    Marriage. This is Alisa, whose heart has been given irrevocably to her

    service to the Harvest Goddess. Rather like a nun who has taken vows, Alisa

    will not accept any proposal of Marriage, even at highest heart Level,

    deeming

    that her devotion to the Harvest Goddess restricts her to service on Mystic

    Islands.

    Even though Shea and the Witch Princess do not display a coloured heart with

    their Portraits, you ALWAYS can find their Heart Levels as well as the Heart

    Levels of every other Character on the Relations Page. In Sunshine Islands,

    the Characters Page of the Farm Menu is designated by the icon of a

    character's head and actually consists of two separate pages. The first is

    allocated to human characters and the second is allocated to the Harvest

    Sprites who live on Sprite Island.

    Players often are confused by the coloured heart icon both in Island ofHappiness and in Sunshine Islands as Events may not occur always when the

    Heart Level first changes colour. The Heart icon actually is an indication

    only. The real determinant for any Event is the total number of Love or

    Friendship Points that you have with any character. In some cases, the total

    required may not be reached when the Heart actually changes colour.

    Available for Courtship from the start if your character is a girl are

    you will be able to make 'dates' with them for romantic Festivals if any

    occur

    within the week between your proposal and marriage, but for the purpose of

    Rival Heart Events, deepest Red Heart Levels no longer will be an impediment.

    Note that you can experience only one of these Events per day, however, even

    if the time when the Rival Event might occur would permit more than one to be

    experienced and even if the year would permit it.

    In other words, if you marry in the third year and then experience Elliot and

    Julia's 1st Rival Heart Event at 1.00 p.m. by crossing the bridge from your

    Ranch to Verdure Island, you cannot then cross the bridge from Verdure Island

    to Sprout Island on the same day to experience their 2nd Rival Heart Event.

    To experience the marriages of all Rival Couples, however, you must marry

    some

    one for whom no Rival exists. This narrows your choices considerably. If

    you

    are a boy, you will find that the Witch Princess and Chelsea are without

    other

    suitors. If your character is a girl, it is Mark and Shea who have no othersuitors.

    Harvest Moon, however, gives the player the ultimate choice in terms of his

    or

    her destiny. As you have two slots for different games, you always can

    choose

    to marry an Eligible Girl/Bachelor with a Rival and then experience his/her

    Rival Marriage in a game in the other slot.

    N.B. With respect to Sunshine Islands, you cannot save one game in two slots

    as

    in the old days with games such as FoMT or even HM DS. You must begin an

    entirely new game in Slot 2...

     Additional Marriage Requirements

    The usual Harvest Moon Marriage Requirements in terms of experiencing all

    Heart

    Events, having the Eligible Girl/Bachelor at maximum Heart Level and raising

    Mystic Islands to meet the Harvest Goddess and obtain access to her Church,

    as

    well as requirements of having an upgraded house that will accommodate a

    Husband/Wife Bed apply in Sunshine Islands.

    There is one additional Requirement, however, that some players need to beaware exists. If you befriend all Characters to obtain the Sun Stones from

    each Individual as well as the Sun Stone that is linked to the House/Shop or

    Family as early as possible in your game, you never will be obliged to think

    about this 'hidden' Requirement. In fact, however, obtaining the Sun Stones

    connected to the Eligible Girl/Bachelor and his/her family/shop is a 'hidden'

    requirement in Sunshine Islands.

    For example, if you wish to marry Shea, you must obtain both Sun Stones from

    him as an Individual and as the owner of his 'house' as well as the Sun Stone

    from Wada before Shea will accept your Blue Feather.

    Note that the 'Personal' Sunstone from any individual must be obtained first.

    The Event that yields the 'Owner/Head of Household' Sunstone will not trigger

    if you have not obtained the Personal Sunstone prerviously by giving 5

    preferred Gifts.

    The reason why you must obtain the owner/head of household Sun Stone before

    you

    are able to propose successfully is because your Spouse will live with you

    after marriage, leaving his/her home empty. You therefore would not be able

    to experience the Event after marriage.

    As you need ALL Sun Stones from every individual in order to be able to raise

    all the Islands, it is a good idea to befriend all Characters as early as

    possible, whether for the sake of your future Courtship or for your general

    success in Sunshine Islands.

    In some cases, the final Rival Heart Event may require that you obtain one of

    the participant's Sun Stone (s) before it can be experienced. In the case

    of

    any Eligible Girl/Bachelor with an Owner's Sun Stone, if that Character will

    move to his/her Spouse's home after marriage, you must obtain the Owner's SunStone before the final Rival Heart Event that precipitates the Rival Marriage

    can occur.

    Heart Events

    As previously stated, there are four Heart Events for each Eligible Girl and

    each Eligible Bachelor. There is a Purple Heart Event, a Blue Heart Event, a

    Green Heart Event and a Yellow Heart Event. There is only one path for each

    of the Eligible Girls/Bachelors and therefore the response that you make in

    the course of any Heart Event will affect only the total Love or Affection

    Points you have with that Girl or Bachelor. It will not change the actual

    future in terms of the next Heart Event.

    Note that the Heart Icon may not change colour if you give the 'wrong'

    response

    in the course of any Heart Event but you WILL lose points in terms of the

    total Affection/Love points that you have with the Eligible Girl/Bachelor.

    Whether or not the Heart Icon actually changes colour depends on the number

    of

    points you had at the time when the Event was triggered. If you are close to

    the next Heart Level, the Heart icon will remain the same colour but the same

    number of points will be lost by giving the incorrect response.

    As in ANY Harvest Moon or Rune Factory game, you cannot experience ANY Event

    twice once you have saved your game. If you give the incorrect response inthe course of any Heart Event, it is best to reload your game and trigger the

    Event again. An incorrect response, however, simply lowers Heart Level. It

    does not prevent the next Heart Event from being triggered when you have

    reached the required Heart Level nor will it prevent your ultimate marriage

    to

    the individual. This is the case in EVERY Harvest Moon/Rune Factory game.

    Rival Heart Events

    As in Island of Happpiness, Rival Couples can marry in Sunshine Islands but

    they will not have a Child. There are three Rival Heart Events and these

    will

    be the same whether you play as a boy or a girl. When the third and final

    Rival Heart Event occurs, the Rival Couple will marry.

    What makes this game different is the fact that the FIRST Rival Heart Event

    cannot be triggered until the second year. The second cannot be triggered

    before the Third Year. The third cannot be experienced before the Fourth

    Year. Furthermore, as in some previous Harvest Moon games, Rival Heart

    Events will not be triggered AT ALL if the Heart Level of the Eligible

    Girl/Bachelor is too high. If, therefore, you wish to experience ALL Heart

    Events for every Eligible Girl/Bachelor before marriage and as early as

    possible, you must resign yourself to waiting until your character is married

    in order to experience the Rival Heart Events.

    The Heart Level requirements for each Rival Heart Event are as follows:

    Black Rival Heart Event: Eligible Girl/Bachelor's Heart level must be less

    than 10,000 AP.

    Green Rival Heart Event: Heart Level must be less than 35,000 AP.

    Orange Rival Heart Event: Heart Level must be below 60,000 AP.

    As previously indicated, the easiest way to facilitate the Rival Marriages is

    after your own character's marriage. If you marry a Bachelor or Eligible

    Girl

    for whom you have no Rival, you then will be able to experience all Rival

    Marriages as Heart Levels in terms of Love disappear after your Marriage and

    only FP or Friendship will remain.

    To experience all Rival Heart Events at the earliest opportunity, court only

    one Eligible Girl/Bachelor and make certain that you have no Rival for

    his/her

    Heart. There is a slight problem with this, however, in that you need to

    raise the Heart Levels of every Character, including all Eligible Girls and

    Bachelors at least to two Hearts in order to obtain Sun Stones from each. It

    therefore is not practical to ignore ANY Character in Sunshine Islands.

    As usual, however, the Gift of an item that an individual detests will lower

    Heart Levels.

    My own recommendation would be to raise ALL Heart Levels and experience all

    Heart Events for each Eligible Girl/Bachelor before you propose to the man or

    woman of your dreams. After marriage, the Rival Heart Events should proceed

    effortlessly.

    As in many other Harvest Moon games, you receive a significant number of

    points

    towards your Farming Degree by experiencing Events. This is an additional

    incentive to experience the full set of Heart Events for each Eligible

    Girl/Bachelor before you propose to any one.

    As Sunshine Islands, like Island of Happiness, is rather a long game, you can

    take your time, courting every possible candidate before you determine upon

    marriage. After all, you cannot even MEET all candidates immediately and it

    may be the second year in the game before you meet the last Eligible

    Girl/Bachelor in the person of Mark or Chelsea.

    The Harvest Goddess and the Bell

    The Harvest Goddess is the centre of spiritual power both in Island of

    Happiness and in Sunshine Islands. Her Church on Mystic Islands is the place

    where almost every Wedding is celebrated and even when a Wedding, such as

    Shea's Marriage Ceremony is celebrated elsewhere, she must set her blessing

    upon the nuptials by ringing the Bell. You therefore cannot expect any

    Marriage Proposal to be accepted if you have not raise Mystic Islands and

    made

    an offering to the Harvest Goddess to acknowledge her position.

     Weddings

    Most Weddings in Sunshine Islands occur at the Church on Mystic Islands.

    Nathan and Alisa preside over the Ceremony and the Harvest Goddess will

    appear

    outside afterward to give her blessing to the happy couple and ring the Bell.

    If you experience all three Rival Heart Events for any Couple and have a high

    Friendship level with your Rival, he/she will come to your house one week

    after the final Rival Heart Event to invite you to the Wedding. You have no

    option to refuse and the Wedding will take the entire day, much like Rival

    Weddings in HM DS and HM Cute DS. You only will regain control over your

    Character the next morning. This can present a potential problem in terms of

    Animal Care, especially if you have triggered the final Rival Heart Event for

    more than one Couple in the same week on consecutive days. Make certain

    that

    you keep count of the days and hire the Orange Team to Feed your Animals on

    the day or days that your Character will be out of circulation, enjoying the

    Wedding Celebrations of your Rivals

    Your own Wedding will consume an entire day as well and you will regain

    control

    only the next day at 6.00 a.m. in your Farmhouse with your new spouse.

    Rival Couples at Home

    If Rival Couples marry, their future home is predetermined in Sunshine

    Islands.

    When Elliot and Julia marry, Julia will move to Taro's House after theWedding. When Vaughn and Sabrina marry, they will live at Regis' Mansion.

    Vaughn incidentally no longer will leave the Islands, but will be present

    every day of the week as a married man, whether he is married to you or to

    Sabrina.

    When Denny and Lanna marry, they will live together at Lanna's House.

    Natalie

    and Pierre, when married, will live at Pierre's House. If Lily and Will

    marry, they will live on Will's Ship.

    The Blue Feather

    The Blue Feather will appear at Chen's Market as soon as any

    Bachelor/Eligible

    Girl reaches Orange Heart level. You can purchase it and ship it, then find

    another one for sale immediately afterwards. If, however, you use it to

    propose successfully to some one, the Blue Feather will not be offered again

    until your Wedding has taken place. At that point, you will be able to buy

    another and ship it or show it to Characters for their responses.

    After your marriage, the Responses of the Eligible Bachelors/Girls will be

    the

    same as you would have received if you had proposed to them while still

    single

    before they had attained deepest red heart level:

    Elliot: ...I'm sorry. I don't think I'm ready to get married yet.

    Vaughn: Marrying? Never thought about it... But, well, I'm flattered.

    Pierre: M-Marriage? Hmm... I'm sorry, but I don't know how I feel about

    that.

    Shea: Blue feather... From what kind of bird...? Shea try to catch.

    The Responses of your Rivals likewise will be the same, wishing you good

    fortune with your proposal, even though you are married now.

    Natalie: Whoa. Are you going to propose to some one with that? Good luck!

    Julia: A Blue Feather! It's more vivid than I expected.

    Lily: It's a beautiful feather... Is it worth anything?

    Sabrina: Freya, you will be all right. I wish you well.

    Witch Princess: I can feel a kind of weird power in this feather...

    Alisa; Are you getting married? That's wonderful.

    With respect to other Characters, in their Responses, you will see likewise

    that they are speaking to you as though you remained unmarried.

    Taro: Don't show that to people so casually. Not even to me!

    Felicia: A blue feather? For who, I wonder. I wish you all the best!

    Chen: I'm flattered... but I'm too old for a woman your age.

    Charlie: For me? Heh heh. It's kind of embarrassing. You'll see me again

    after I grow up.

    Mirabelle: Let me know if you want any advice on married life.

    Regis: Do you intend to propose to some one? I wish you well.Gannon: Any one but me!

    Wada: ... Blue Feather... ....... ... Marry.

    Witchkin: What a strangely coloured feather! Ew!

    Friendship Events

    Most Harvest Moon games include Friendship Events as well as 'Heart Events'.

    Friendship Events, sometimes referred to as 'random events', although they

    generally are NOT random at all, are not associated with Courtship and may

    involve more than one Character. Although they did not occur in Island of

    Happiness, there are about 30 Friendship Events in Sunshine Islands,

    featuring

    Eligible Girls and Bachelors as well as other Characters.

    Each Category of Heart Event has its own 'signature' tune. The 'HeartEvent'

    music is very different from the 'Rival Heart Event' music. If you

    familiarise yourself with these melodies, you will not confuse a Friendship

    Event with a true Heart Event, even if the Event involves an Eligible Girl or

    Bachelor.

    The Friendship Events in Sunshine Islands do not have a special signature

    melody, but rather will be accompanied by the music that is associated with

    the specific location where the Event occurs. In other words, if the Event

    occurs inside Mirabelle's Animal Shop, the music that is linked to the Shop

    will play throughout the course of the Event. Friendship Events that occur

    inside the Church likewise are accompanied by the wonderful sedate organ

    music

    linked to the Church.

    The text of all Heart Events and Rival Heart Events is included in this

    Courtship and Marriage Guide. Friendship Events are included, on the other

    hand, in my Characters Guide as they are not related to Courtship.

    All Friendship Events require a Friendship Level that is a little above 6

    Hearts, usually with respect to every participant in the Event. Heart

    Events,

    as previously indicated, have their own specific Heart Level Requirements.If you cannot experience any specific Friendship Event at the appointed

    location and time, make certain first that the Event is not gender-specific

    and can be experienced irrespective of whether your Character is a Girl or a

    Boy. If you still cannot experience the Event, you may need to raise

    Although most of the Eligible Girls/Bachelors, with the exceptions of Shea

    and

    the Witch Princess, display coloured Heart Icons next to their portraits,

    there are other indications of Heart Level. The primary indication actually

    is neither the Heart Icon next to the Portrait nor the number of Hearts

    displayed on the Characters Page of the Farm Menu but rather a Point Total in

    Friendship that one cannot see. One Heart Level may spans two Heart Icons on

    this page which means that the coloured Heart Icon next to the Portrait may

    remain the same through two different totals on the Characters Page.

    With respect to the Eligible Girls/Bachelors whose Heart Level icon appears

    with their Portraits, you may discover that, even though they have reached 10

    Hearts on the Characters Page, the colour of the Portrait Heart Icon on the

    screen still remains Orange. The reason for this is that these Heart Icons

    are not precisely equal to the Point totals that represent each 'turning

    point' in a realtionship.

    There is one other indication of Heart Level in the form of dialogue.

    Dialogue actually is a more accurate indicator than the Heart icons inSunshine Islands, if you speak to the individual at a location where Dialogue

    changes with Heart Level. At 10 Hearts, when the Eligible Girl/Bachelor has

    not attained deepest red heart level required for marriage, his/her Dialogue

    will remain the same as at Orange Heart Level. When the Dialogue changes,

    the

    Heart Level will have met the required point total for a successful Marriage

    Proposal.

    As in all Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games, dialogue will remain static for a

    character at certain locations but at other locations will change according

    to

    Heart Level. For each Character, there is a location where the dialogue will

    vary according to the season as well. Do not mistake this dialogue for

    conversation that is based on Heart Level.

    For example, when you speak to Will at the Beach on Verdure Island, his

    dialogue will remain the same whether his Heart Level is Black or Yellow, but

    when you speak to him in the cabin of his ship, it will change according to

    Heart Level. In most cases, in fact, it is when you speak to any Character

    at

    home that his/her Dialogue will change according to Heart Level.

    When Elliot is at home, his Dialogue will change according to heart level.

    At

    10 Hearts on the Characters Page, if the Portrait Heart Icon remains Orange,

    his dialogue will be as follows:

    Elliot: How's work on the ranch? If you need help, don't hesitate to ask.

    Even if you have met ALL other general Requirements for Marriage, having

    experienced all four of his Heart Events, obtained his Personal Sun Stone,

    raised Mystic Island, met the Harvest Goddess, expanded your house and

    purchased the Husband Bed, he will refuse your Marriage Proposal even with 10

    Hearts on the Characters Page.

    It is only when his Portrait Icon changes to deepest red that his dialogue

    will

    change to:

    Elliot: Freya, just seeing your face makes me happy for some reason.

    It is at this point that he will accept your Marriage Proposal with your Blue

    Feather.

    The same is true with respect to each of the Eligible Girls/Bachelors. If

    you

    court some one diligently and give daily 'Favourites' to the individual, you

    may achieve both 10 Hearts and the deepest Red Heart Icon almost at the same

    time.

    Where Shea and the Witch Princess are concerned, there is no Portrait Heart

    Icon and you therefore must rely on dialogue exclusively. As long as these

    individuals continue to respond with the Orange Heart Dialogue, your proposal

    will be rejected.

    In games such as FoMT/MFoMT where your Farm Menu did not display Heart Levels

    of any Characters apart from your own family members, it was dialogue alone

    that gave an indication of the strength of your relationship with anyCharacter. In HMDS/Cute DS, you had a marvelous Accessory in the form of the

    Love Bangle to give you the precise number of Love and/or Friendship Points

    you had earned with any Character. In IoH and SI, you always can refer to

    your Characters Page for the number of Hearts earned but you will not be able

    to see the precise number of points you have at any given moment.

    As discussed in another section of this Guide, the Heart Level icons and

    Dialogue of other Eligible Girls/Bachelors will become meaningless as soon as

    you have made a successful Marriage Proposal. Although the Heart Icon will

    continue to be displayed with the portrait until the Wedding, Rival Events

    will begin to trigger the very next day provided other requirements, such as

    Year, are met. There is one week between a successful Marriage Proposal and

    any Wedding, unless Festival Days intervene.

    Boosting the Value of Your Friendship Acts

    There are Accessories in Sunshine Islands in the form of Friendship Pendants

    that will increase the Point Value of any action that raises Friendship

    Levels. You will unlock the next size of Pendant by ordering the size that

    is

    offered in Charlie's Accessories Menu.

    Friendship Pendants at first glance might be mistaken for the resource of the

    lazy or anti-social player but in fact, if you do not EARN Friendship through

    your own actions, the Pendant will not do it for you! What the Friendship

    Pendants do is augment the Friendship that your own actions have earned. TheSmall Friendship Pendant will give you a 20% boost whenever you earn any

    Friendship points. The effect of the Medium Pendant is a 50% boost and the

    Large Friendship Pendant increases Friendship Points by 100%. In other words,

    the Large Friendship Pendant doubles the value of any action you undertake,

    whether it is speaking to an individual or giving him/her a preferred Gift.

    This Accessory actually can be valuable, especially if you equip it before

    you

    embark on your daily 'meeting and greeting' rounds of the Islands.

    Make certain that you equip a Friendship Pendant whenever you give a Gift or

    attend a Festival in order to maximise the value of every social interaction.

    Obviously, once you have the Large Friendship Pendant, the other sizes become

    superfluous. Either sell them to Chen or store them in your Beauty Box.

    The 'prices' of the Friendship Pendants are as follows:

    Friendship Pendant (S): 5

    Makes friendships easier to build. Effect: Small

    Friendship Pendant (M): 15

    Makes friendships easier to build. Effect: Medium

    Friendship Pendant (L): 30

    Makes friendships easier to build. Effect: Large

    As with any Accessory order, you can obtain a discount by asking for an

    Enchantment to 'decrease material' by the Green Team on the previous day. The

    amount of the discount is based on the size of the Enchantment. With

    Accessories such as the Friendship Pendants, a discount is not as significant

    as it would be for the more expensive Accessories.

    Easy Gift List

    It is important to interact regularly with every Character in Sunshine

    Islands.

    The simple act of 'meeting and greeting' any Individual is worth 100

    Friendship Points. A preferred Gift, received 'with music' is worth 300

    Friendship Points and five such Gifts will result in the reciprocal Gift of a

    Sun Stone. A true Most Favourite is worth 800 Friendship Points and an

    ordinary Favourite is worth 500 points. These items tend to be more valuable

    or difficult to obtain, however, than 'preferred Gifts'.

    My own strategy is to find items that are easy to obtain and not terribly

    valuable to give to each Character. If you wish to use a true Most Favourite

    as a Gift, the best occasion to do so would be a Character's Birthday when

    the

    value of any Gift is multiplied.

    Another consideration is space. Although a Large Rucksack can be purchased

    from Chen and items can be stacked, space always is limited, especially as

    items have different Ranks, Quality, Size and Freshness. If you can give the

    same time of item to more than one Character, those Gifts can occupy a single

    slot in your Rucksack.

    Easy Gifts that can be given to a large number of Characters include Small

    Fish

    and inexpensive Ores, such as Copper and Silver. Gelatin is another

    inexpensive Gift that is popular with more than one Character. ForCharacters

    who require a Cooked Dish to respond 'with music', Egg Soup is a viable

    choice.

    Romantic Festivals

    The Harvest Goddess Festival

    You will not experience this Festival in the first year as you must raise

    Mystic Islands before you can meet the Harvest Goddess, Alisa and Nathan.

    The

    Spring Harvest Festival is a celebration of the Birthday of the Harvest

    Goddess on 8 Spring.

    Alisa will announce the upcoming Festival at 6.00 a.m. on 7 Spring. If any

    Bachelor is at Green Heart or higher, with the exception of Shea, you will

    obtain an option to ask him to escort you to the Dance when you speak to him

    on 7 Spring. Even when Shea is at deepest red Heart level, the escort

    option

    will not be triggered and he will not speak of the upcoming Festival at all

    on

    7 Spring.

    Note that the escort option will be triggered with the first EligibleGirl/Bachelor to whom you speak who is at the required Heart Level. You

    therefore should not speak to any Eligible Girl/Bachelor until you have made

    a

    Date with the man/girl of your dreams or you will find yourself in the

    awkward

    position of being forced to decline to ask the individual to accompany you to

    the Dance. Once you have made an assignation with some one, the option to

    Ask

    no longer will be triggered when speaking to another Eligible Girl/Bachelor.

    If you have an escort, he will arrange to meet you either at Haila's Cafe or

    at

    Nick's Diner at 10.00 a.m. on the day of the Festival. Note that the hours

    of

    the Festival are 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. If you attempt to enter Haila's

    Cafe

    or Nick's Diner before 10.00 a.m., you will receive a prompt to the effect

    that you should return later. If you arrive at the designated restaurant at

    6.00 p.m., you will miss the Festival entirely. The best time to arrive is

    at

    5.40 p.m. or 5.50 p.m. You then will not waste any of your working day but

    will be in time to meet your escort. Even at 5.50 p..m., he will tell you

    that you are on time!

    With your escort, you will be transported magically to Meadow Island where

    you

    will join the other Eligible Girls in a Dance in honour of the Harvest

    Goddess. Alisa will preside over the proceedings.

    If you have an escort, you will dance for him in a pairing that features the

    girl as dancer and the boy as a partner who simply stands across from her.If

    you have no partner, all of the Rival Couples will be paired for the Dance.

    After the Dance, your Escort will bid farewell to you and the Event will end

    at

    6.00 p.m. You will find yourself alone then inside your Farmhouse.

    The actual text of the Date Events are included in the sections devoted to

    the

    specific Eligible Girls/Bachelors.

    Once you have made a date for the Harvest Goddess Festival, you really ought

    to

    keep it. Failing to do so will result in an Event rather similar to the

    Event

    that occurs the day after any Animal Contest if you fail to attend after

    making an Entry.

    Here is the text of the Event with Will:

    Missed Date Event after Harvest Goddess Festival

    Freya, it's Will. Excuse me a moment.

    He enters.

    Will: I was waiting for you yesterday, Freya. Why didn't you come?

    Me: (...)

    Will: I've never had to wait so much for a maiden. I didn't think you wouldtrample my feelings like that, Freya. I'm quite taken aback.

    He turns and stalks out of the farmhouse.

    Spring Harmony Day

    Spring Harmony Day, on the 14th Day of Spring is the equivalent of the Spring

    Thanksgiving Day in other Harvest Moon games. It is St. Valentine's Day for

    female recipients. If your character is a boy, he should try to give Cookies

    to every female in Sunshine Islands, although it is most important to give

    them to all the Eligible Girls. Unfortunately, if you do not have Cookies,

    Chocolate will not be recognised as an appropriate Harmony Day Gift.

    If your character is a girl, Spring Harmony Day is a day to receive Cookies

    from any Bachelor at Green Heart Level or higher. The visits are scheduled

    for each Bachelor at a specific time interval. In the second year, the only

    bachelors in Freya's game at Green Heart or higher were Elliot, Denny and

    Will. They all brought Cookies. In the third year, all Bachelors were at

    Green Heart or higher, so she received visits from each. The visits occur

    every hour on the hour if you re-enter your Farmhouse. In the third year,

    she

    received Chocolate Cookies from all the Bachelors apart from Mark, who was at

    Green Heart, so it appears that any Heart Level above Green Heart will result

    in Chocolate Cookies.

    Spring Harmony Day

    The first event occurs after 6.00 a.m. the first time I reenter my house.

    Spring Harmony Day

    Me: ?

    Elliot enters.

    Elliot: I got you a little something in return for your gift last winter. I

    hope you like it.

    Mark is the only bachelor who still has a heart icon!

    Fireworks Festival

    The Fireworks Festival has the potential to be a Romantic Event but unlike

    other Festivals with romantic aspects, you do not make a Date in advance.

    Simply go to the Meadow in the Evening between 6.00 p.m. and 9.50 p.m. and

    you

    will encounter all Eligible Bachelors and Girls there. At Green Heart or

    higher, you will obtain an option to watch the show together. If you decline

    the invitation from the last Bachelor/Eligible Girl to whom you speak, you

    will watch the show with Gannon.

    Incidentally, as with any Festival that occurs at night, you will be sent

    home

    straight to bed afterwards.

    Speak to every one who attends for a boost of 400 Friendship Points. When

    Trent begins to visit the Islands, he will attend this Festival.

    Trent: Cup your hands over your ears when the fireworks explode to protect

    your eardrums.

    You will have only one Invitation from any Eligible Girl/Bachelor at Green

    Heart or higher. If you decline, you cannot expect the subject to be

    broached

    if you speak to the individual again!

    Gannon: Can I start now?

    My options:

    Watching Fireworks with Pierre:

    Pierre: I can't wait to watch the fireworks! Would you like to watch the

    Your Birthday in Sunshine Islands

    When you reach 7 Hearts or Yellow Heart Level (40,000 points) with any

    individual, even while you remain single, you will receive a special Birthday

    Gift from that Character if you speak to him/her on your Birthday. The only

    exceptions are Haila, Nick and your own Child. Each Character gives adifferent Gift and many of them are rare or valuable items. Each Character

    actually has the potential of giving one of three different Gifts, one of

    which usually is far more valuable and rare than the others. For example,

    Will's Gift can be the very rare Firefly Flower, a Red Magic Flower or a

    Pinkcat Flower and Shea's Gift can be a Truffle, a White Herb or a Large

    Fish.

    The gifts follow a specific order and the actual gift you receive is

    determined by the year.

    Note that, for all Characters who give Gifts on your Birthday, one of the

    three

    Gifts in many cases is THEIR Most Favourite Gift. The order of the Gifts is

    not determined by the degree to which the Character favours the Gift,

    however.

    For example, in Elliot's case, his Most Favourite Gift is Stir-Fried Veggies,

    which you will not receive from him until the 3rd year. Even where the

    Birthday Gifts are not 'Most Favourite Gifts', they are Gifts ordinarily that

    would be worth 500 FP if you 'regifted' the item to them.

    Your choice of Birthday makes it either more or less likely that you will

    receive any Birthday Gifts in the 1st Year. Remember, however, that the list

    rotates and 1st Year Gifts will be 4th year Gifts as well. Your choice of

    Birthday will determine which Mineral Town visitor(s) ever give you his/her

    Birthday Gifts as their visits are set in specific seasons.

    Receiving a Birthday Gift is one method by which your Shipping List can be

    completed early in the game in the case of rare items.The following is the list of Birthday Gifts that you will receive from any

    Character in the order in which they are given, beginning in the first year.

     Winter Harmony Day

    Winter Harmony Day on 14 Winter is the equivalent of Japanese White Day or

    the

    traditional Harvest Moon Winter Thanksgiving Day. It is the day on which

    Girls give Chocolates to the men or boys they fancy. For those who are

    unfamiliar with the Japanese tradition, it is the equivalent of St.Valentine's Day for male recipients. As in most Harvest Moon games, you can

    give Chocolate to every male Character and it will be appreciated even by

    individuals who ordinarily do not care for Chocolate or sweets.

    If your Character is a Boy, you will receive visits from every Eligible Girl

    at

    Green Heart or higher according to a set order. Visits may begin as early

    as

    6.00 a.m. when you exit your Farmhouse for the first time.

    In many Harvest Moon games, Chocolate Cake is the preferred Gift for Winter

    Thanksgiving but in Sunshine Islands, both Chocolate and Chocolate Cake will

    receive the same response and have the same Gift value. It therefore is a

    waste of ingredients, time and energy to make Chocolate Cake for every one

    while you remain single at any rate. I have not tested whether or not any

    distinction is made between the two once you are married.

    Unlike some other games, however, you cannot give two Gifts on 14 Winter. If

    you give a different item first, your Gift of Chocolate will not be accepted.

    It therefore is best simply to give Chocolate to every one.

    Starry Night Festival

    As the requirement for celebrating the Starry Night Festival with an EligibleBachelor or Girl is 6 Hearts or Green Heart Level, the 2nd Winter may be your

    first opportunity to celebrate this romantic Festival.

    To celebrate the Starry Night Festival, you need to make an arrangement with

    an

    Eligible Girl/Bachelor on the previous day. When you first speak to any

    Eligible Girl/Bachelor with 6 Hearts or higher on 23 Winter, it will trigger

    the Date option. You therefore should speak to the individual with whom you

    most wish to spend the Starry Night Festival before you speak to any one

    else.

    Once you make an arrangement with some one, the option no longer will be

    available with other Characters.

    In many Harvest Moon games, the Starry Night Festival is a business holiday

    and

    all shops and houses are locked throughout the day. In Sunshine Islands, on

    the other hand, you can visit individuals and shop as usual, with one

    important exception. The location for your Starry Night Festival date will

    be

    unavailable until 6.00 p.m.

    If you attempt to enter the building where your date is set to occur before

    6.00 p.m., you will receive a prompt as follows:

    Freya: We promised to meet at 6 p.m. I'll come back later.

    This is significant actually only in the case of Vaughn or Julia as their

    Starry Night Festival Dates occur at the Animal Shop.

    The Starry Night Festival is not so much a romantic assignation before

    marriage

    as it is a family celebration. You will be invited to spend the evening with

    the family of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor. Although you apparently do spend

    time star-gazing afterwards, you will not experience that part of the

    Festival

    directly.

    After you have experienced the celebratory Starry Night Festival meal, you

    will

    go directly to bed, so make certain that all your chores are completed BEFORE

    you go to the assignation.

    Family Life in Sunshine Islands

    Once you are married, you will receive a meal from your Spouse whenever you

    enter your Farmhouse between 1.00 p.m. and 2.00 p.m. On your Birthday and

    Anniversary, your Spouse will surprise you with a special event. As in other

    Harvest Moon games, you first will be asked if you know what occasion is

    being

    celebrated. On your Birthday, answer correctly to receive the special

    Birthday Gift your Spouse would give you if you remained single.

    On your anniversary, if you respond correctly to your Spouse's question, you

    will receive a Wonderful as an Anniversary Gift.

    Lunch

    When you enter your Farmhouse after marriage on any day other than a Festival

    Day between 1.00 p.m. and 1.50 p.m., you will experience an Event entitled

    'Lunch'.

    Your spouse will stand in the kitchen 'with music'.

    The text of the Event will differ from spouse to spouse but the items always

    are chosen at random. If you save your game before you enter the House, you

    can reload to obtain a different Item as 'Lunch'.

    A Lunch item can be used to elicit a new Recipe from Haila or Nick if it is

    an

    Item that you have not been able to obtain or cook prior to this. My

    Sunshine

    Islands Cookbook Recipe Guide lists the items that prompt every Recipe in the

    game. As the Lunch items are completely random, you can reload again and

    again until you obtain an item that can be used for a new Recipe.

    Your Birthday after Marriage

    A List of all possible Gifts that will be given to you on your Birthday by

    all

    Characters who have attained 7 Hearts or a total of 40,000 Friendship Points

    is given in another section of this Guide. You simply need to speak to each

    individual on your Birthday in order to receive the designated Gift for thatyear and your marital status is irrelevant.

    The only difference that occurs when you are married is that your Spouse will

    celebrate your Birthday at home with a little special Event if you enter your

    Farmhouse after 6.00 p.m. and you will have the opportunity to receive a Gift

    from him/her. All you need to do is answer the question put to you

    correctly.

    Having a Child

    Having a child is not an automatic result in Sunshine Islands. You need

    first

    to expand your house one more time in order to be able to buy the Child's

    Bed.

    This should appear at Chen's Market in the Furniture category one full

    season

    after your marriage.

    Your Spouse must be at maximum Heart Level of 60,000 points, or deepest red

    heart level as well if you wish to have an announcement of a blessed event.

    If you ignore your Spouse for a total of 5 days, for example, you will have a

    30% chance of losing 1000 AP with your Spouse on that day and every day after

    that if you continue to ignore him/her. This would be an impediment to any

    pregnancy, obviously!

    If all requirements are met and the pregnancy is announced, your Child will

    be

    born two full seasons after the pregnancy announcement. The gender of your

    child is chosen randomly and you can have only one child in Sunshine Islands.

    In fact, Sunshine Islands is very similar to Island of Happiness where your

    Child is concerned in many respects.

    When your child is born, he/she will have 35,000 Friendship Points at birth

    and

    will spend two full years in the Child's Bed. You can interact daily with

    the

    Child by speaking to him/her to raise Heart Levels but you cannot give any

    Gifts at this initial stage. Stand beside the Crib and press 'A' or touch

    the

    Crib with the stylus to hear your Child cry and express your own wish that

    he/she grow up to be strong and healthy.

    Two years after birth, you will experience an Event wherein your Child begins

    to speak. At this point, you will be able to give him/her Gifts on a daily

    basis. You now will be able to receive a Sun Stone from your Child. If you

    collected all other Sun Stones that can be obtained, you now should be able

    to

    raise Sunny Island.

    Your Child will crawl about the house for another two years. At 4 Years of

    age, your Child will begin to walk and will be able to leave the house. This

    is the final stage in your Child's development.

    Special Dialogues

    There are a number of situations where a special Dialogue will be initiated.

    One is during any Engagement, in the week between a successful Proposal and

    the Wedding. In the case of your own Engagement, it is your Rivals who will

    have a special Dialogue, acknowledging your pending Marriage. In the case of

    a Rival's Engagement, it is the Eligible Bachelor/Girl who will speak to you

    of his/her pending Marriage.

    When a Rival is engaged, speak to the Eligible Girl/Bachelor at home to

    experience the Dialogue about the pending Marriage. When it is your own

    Engagement, you need to speak to your Rival when he/she is outside in one of

    his/her habitual locations.

    For example, if your Character is a Girl, speak to Lily at Volcano Island to

    experience the Dialogue. Natalie's Dialogue occurs outside the Diner.

    Julia's Dialogue occurs at Sprout Island at the Beach.

    There are special Dialogues that occur only when you are married and others

    that occur only when Rival Couples have married. Once you have married, any

    of your Rivals who remain single will speak wistfully of marriage. Once a

    Rival Couple marries, both will speak of their marital bliss.

    Ordinary Characters who are not eligible for marriage will have special

    Dialogue about your wedded state when you speak to them at specific

    locations.For example, it is only on Saturday at the Café that Mirabelle will remark

    upon your marriage. Felicia will speak of her memories of her husband in the

    context of your marriage at the Café as well.

    Finally, the Dialogues for Characters after any severe storm will change

    after

    your Marriage and/or the Marriage of Rival Couples. There is one Dialogue

    for

    Typhoons and another for Blizzards.

    gifts that Elliot prizes, although Potatoes are even more of a favourite than

    Turnips. If you can afford to give crops to him, do, but you will find that

    his heart level increases if you simply speak to him daily. As in IoH, he is

    one of the most easily accessible bachelors in SI.
