Rector?s ColumnFROM DISAPPOINTMENT TO RECOGNITIONDisappointment means an appointment was dissed. We were looking forward to an experience of something good, beneficial or helpful and it did not happen. The good experience was replaced by something less desirable. The appointment was dissed.

In the Sunday Gospel, there are two very disappointed disciples (Luke 24:13-35). They thought Jesus would be their key to polit ical l iberation from the Romans. Profoundly inspired by his teaching, they had left everything to go with him to Jerusalem. Now he was dead. In their disappointment, they saw no point in staying around with the other disciples, so they headed home to Emmaus to pursue their old way of l ife.

When Jesus joined them on the road, they were so lost in their disappointment they did not even recognize him. Then something amazing happened at dinner. When Jesus blessed and broke the bread, they were suddenly pulled out of their disappointment and their eyes were opened to recognizing him. In the Breaking of the Bread, they realized Jesus had been with them all along. With fresh confidence, they moved from disappointment to a new commitment to follow Jesus and return with him to Jerusalem.

Certainly, the many painful consequences of the coronavirus pandemic have left us beyond disappointed. Many are disheartened and even devasted. At other times in our lives we have made engagements with people, planned activit ies and participated in groups that we thought would be great and things did not work out. We were dissed. Like the disciples on the road, we have been lost in disappointment, have wanted to shut down and have not quite known how to look forward to the future.

As Catholics, our precious teaching is that when we break the Bread of the Eucharist, we have with us the Real Presence of Jesus. Recognizing his presence, Jesus can pull us out of our disappointments and assist us in making new appointments with that which is good, helpful and nourishing. Even though we cannot gather at church to participate at Mass, more than ever, we need to keep our appointment with celebrating the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. For those of us who can, let?s put aside time to watch the livestreamed Masses. If we cannot do that, plan at least 30 minutes every Sunday to read the readings from the Sunday Mass, read other passages from the Bible, l isten to sacred music, talk with those in our households about what Jesus means to us and pray for each other. Until we can go to Mass again, our good and creative efforts to make Jesus present in our homes will not leave us disappointed.

CHRIST CATHEDRAL COMMUNITY OUTREACHChrist Cathedral Community Outreach continues to distribute pre-packaged groceries to those in need on the f irst Saturday of each month and every Thursday between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm from Christ Cathedral campus. Approximately 174 households were served this past Thursday. Folks can drive up to the green gate facing the Cultural Center to receive a bag of food. The next Saturday distribution is May 2. Thank you to all who support the Cathedral Community Outreach. Your f inancial support is very much appreciated at this time.

CULTIVATING A SENSE OF CALMWith so much uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, many are experiencing a mix of emotions. While we don?t know exactly how this pandemic will unfold, we do have choices about how we respond. We can be practical without panic and even f ind the blessings amid the chaos. Please join us for a free webcast as Linda Paulson, Behavioral Health Therapist with St. Joseph Hoag Health discusses tips for coping through these challenging times. NEW HOPE CRISIS HOTLINEThe New Hope Crisis Hotline provides telephone crisis intervention and suicide prevention services in Orange County. Trained crisis workers in the Tower of Hope on the Christ Cathedral campus provide counseling to those who are struggling to cope with day-to-day life. La decepción signif ica que una cita salió mal. Estamos esperando una experiencia de algo bueno, algo de beneficio o que nos ayude y no fue así. La experiencia buena fue reemplazada por algo desagradable. La cita no salió bien.

En el Evangelio del domingo, hay dos discípulos muy decepcionados (Lucas 24:13-35). Pensaron que Jesús sería su clave para la liberación polít ica de los romanos. Profundamente inspirados por su enseñanza, habían dejado todo para ir con él a Jerusalén. Ahora estaba muerto. En su decepción, no

vieron ningún sentido en permanecer con los otros discípulos, por lo que se dirigieron a casa a Emaús para seguir su antigua forma de vida.

Cuando Jesús se unió a ellos en el camino, estaban tan perdidos en su decepción que ni siquiera lo reconocieron. Entonces algo increíble sucedió en la cena. Cuando Jesús bendijo y partió el pan, de repente fueron sacados de su desilusión y sus ojos se abrieron para reconocerlo. En la Partida del pan, se dieron cuenta de que Jesús había estado con ellos todo el t iempo. Con nueva confianza, pasaron de la decepción a un nuevo compromiso de seguir a Jesús y regresar con él a Jerusalén.

Ciertamente, las muchas consecuencias dolorosas de la pandemia del coronavirus nos han dejado más que decepcionados. Muchos están desanimados e incluso devastados. En otros tiempos de nuestra vida hemos hecho compromisos con personas, hemos planif icado actividades y participado con grupos que pensamos que serían geniales y las cosas no salieron bien. Quedamos decepcionados. Al igual que los discípulos en el camino, nos hemos perdido en la decepción, hemos querido darnos por vencidos y no sabemos cómo mirar hacia el futuro.

Como católicos, nuestra preciosa enseñanza es que cuando partimos el Pan de la Eucaristía, tenemos con nosotros la Presencia Real de Jesús. Reconociendo su presencia, Jesús puede sacarnos de nuestras decepciones y ayudarnos a hacer nuevos nombramientos con lo que es bueno, útil y nutrit ivo. Incluso si no podemos reunirnos en la iglesia para participar en la Misa, más que nunca, necesitamos mantener nuestra cita con la celebración de la presencia de Jesús en la Eucaristía. Para aquellos de nosotros que podemos, dejemos un tiempo para ver las Misas transmitidas en vivo. Si no se puede hacer eso, aparten por lo menos 30 minutos cada domingo para leer las lecturas de la Misa dominical, leer otros pasajes de la Biblia, escuchar música sagrada, hablar con los de nuestra familia acerca de lo que Jesús signif ica para nosotros y orar el uno por el otro. Hasta que podamos ir de nuevo a Misa, nuestros buenos y creativos esfuerzos para hacer presente a Jesús en nuestros hogares no nos dejarán decepcionados.
