When I arrived a little more than 10 years ago, I was al- ways in “awe” that I was living in the house that Bishop Flaget built and where at times he would have lived dur- ing his stay in Bardstown. Fr. Also avail- able for comparison is last year’s totals as well as the budget for the newly be- gun 2015-2016 fiscal year. You will notice that we were slightly down from the previous year in our income this year ($2,146,554); however, it was still more than our expenses ($2,004,055) so we finished the fiscal year with a sur- plus. Several things to note, our weekly stewardship was down, much of that due to pledged income from families in our school coming in under their pledge, especially the last couple months of the school year in April/May. This less than expected income was off- set by several bequests this past year and donations that were made which were recorded as “auxiliary income.” Specifically looking at the school finan- cial report, it followed a trend of recent years of ending with a deficit, even though projections at the beginning of the year expected a slight surplus to be- gin to lower the accumulating deficits from recent years. This pattern of defi- cits necessitated the move away from the stewardship model of funding the parish and school to funding the school separately through tuition. Things ap- pear to be going well at this time and I remain in awe, and grateful for the sac- rifice so many families (parents and grandparents) make to support our par- ish school. During Advent we were able to raise $2,200 for our Angels of Mercy Project for our sister parish in Chillan, Chile. This issue of the Carpenter’s Journal also provides me with an opportunity to update you on the “Building a Future of Hope Campaign” (BFOH) that was ini- tiated by the Archdiocese shortly after we had completed our own “A Time to Build” capital campaign for the school addition and parish hall. The BFOH Campaign was a major effort to raise funds for both diocesan needs as well as parish needs with monies donated split 50/50 between the diocese and parish. The diocesan needs included the semi- narian education fund, priest retirement funding, a long-term legacy fund, multi- cultural initiatives, and a parish assis- tance fund to help parishes who face exceptional financial/plant needs. Our parish portion “hoped” to fund the exte- rior painting of Flaget Hall, repairs to the rectory, any remaining expenses from the “A Time to Build” Campaign, upgrades to the church sound system, possible restoration of the church’s paintings, and a staff position for His- panic outreach. ST. JOSEPH PARISH NEWSLETTER

FALL 2015 BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY VOLUME 16 / ISSUE 3

from Fr. Bill’s quill

Greetings, with this edition of the Car-

penter’s Journal I find myself with the

opportunity to write one last time as

your pastor as I prepare to “pass the

baton” to Fr. Terry Bradshaw who will

soon be arriving on October 15 to serve

as your newest pastor. When I arrived a

little more than 10 years ago, I was al-

ways in “awe” that I was living in the

house that Bishop Flaget built and

where at times he would have lived dur-

ing his stay in Bardstown. Fr. David,

(later to become Bishop David,) was the

first pastor of the parish and I knew

from my first day that everything that I

or any future pastor does would be to

build upon that rock solid foundation

which the first parishioners established.

It has been a blessing to me to share

over 15 years of this parish’s nearly 200

years of life (5 as associate pastor and

10 as pastor). I look forward to where

Fr. Terry’s leadership, through God’s

grace and the Holy Spirit’s guidance

will shepherd you all next.

By the time you receive this we will

have just recently celebrated and held

our annual Parish Pot Luck with its ac-

companying raffle. Let me take this

opportunity to thank all those volunteers

who so generously help with the distri-

bution and collecting of the raffle tick-

ets and especially thank all those who

were able to support the effort through

the purchase of a chance. It is certainly

one of the more enjoyable tasks I have

as a pastor to make “the phone call” to

winners.

In addition in this issue you will find the

financial report for the fiscal year ended

June 30, 2015 for the parish as a whole

and for our parish school. Also avail-

able for comparison is last year’s totals

as well as the budget for the newly be-

gun 2015-2016 fiscal year. You will

notice that we were slightly down from

the previous year in our income this

year ($2,146,554); however, it was still

more than our expenses ($2,004,055) so

we finished the fiscal year with a sur-

plus. Several things to note, our weekly

stewardship was down, much of that

due to pledged income from families in

our school coming in under their

pledge, especially the last couple

months of the school year in April/May.

This less than expected income was off-

set by several bequests this past year

and donations that were made which

were recorded as “auxiliary income.”

Specifically looking at the school finan-

cial report, it followed a trend of recent

years of ending with a deficit, even

though projections at the beginning of

the year expected a slight surplus to be-

gin to lower the accumulating deficits

from recent years. This pattern of defi-

cits necessitated the move away from

the stewardship model of funding the

parish and school to funding the school

separately through tuition. Things ap-

pear to be going well at this time and I

remain in awe, and grateful for the sac-

rifice so many families (parents and

grandparents) make to support our par-

ish school.

I am grateful for the counsel and over-

sight of the Parish Finance Committee

as we try to be good stewards of the

resources that we have been blessed to

receive and share in service. I certainly

want to thank everyone in the parish for

being good stewards and returning a

portion of your

blessings from

God to support

the parish. This

generosity of

time, talent, and

treasure makes us

the vibrant parish that we are. We are a

very generous parish and in our care for

others, last year we raised and sent over

$48,600 to our sister parishes in Akil

Samedi and in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

During Advent we were able to raise

$2,200 for our Angels of Mercy Project

for our sister parish in Chillan, Chile.

This issue of the Carpenter’s Journal

also provides me with an opportunity to

update you on the “Building a Future of

Hope Campaign” (BFOH) that was ini-

tiated by the Archdiocese shortly after

we had completed our own “A Time to

Build” capital campaign for the school

addition and parish hall. The BFOH

Campaign was a major effort to raise

funds for both diocesan needs as well as

parish needs with monies donated split

50/50 between the diocese and parish.

The diocesan needs included the semi-

narian education fund, priest retirement

funding, a long-term legacy fund, multi-

cultural initiatives, and a parish assis-

tance fund to help parishes who face

exceptional financial/plant needs. Our

parish portion “hoped” to fund the exte-

rior painting of Flaget Hall, repairs to

the rectory, any remaining expenses

from the “A Time to Build” Campaign,

upgrades to the church sound system,

possible restoration of the church’s

paintings, and a staff position for His-

panic outreach.

Continued from page 1

We generously responded with

$666,800 in pledges and at the close of

the campaign we collected $609,200 in

donations of which the parish has

received our share of $304,600. To date

nearly $30,000 was spent on the

exterior painting of Flaget Hall.

$58,000 has been spent on tuck pointing

the west side of the rectory, repairing

and redoing the rectory roof, and adding

a new bath room for the guest room.

Also nearly $8,000 was spent on repairs

to the front porch steps, and $46,000

was applied to the “A Time to Build”

loan payment. We are nearing

completion of the church front porch

which will be approximately $77,000

when the last bill is paid. The column

repairs on the rectory front porch will

be likely $20,000+ when completed.

With additional interest income from

the money being held in savings, this

leaves approximately $101,600 for

additional work on the sound system

and additional church building needs.

In late May we contracted with a sound

engineer who came out and evaluated

our church’s acoustics. Due to other

commitments, his report was delayed

but was finally received in mid-

September. We are still evaluating his

recommendations. Hopefully we will

be able to build upon the improvements

that have already been made to the

church’s sound system.

Another important piece of information

for planning ahead is that after further

discussion with the Parish Council and

requests from a growing number of

parishioners, we will be changing the

Saturday evening Mass time to 4:00

PM effective Saturday evening,

November 7th, the weekend after

Daylight Saving Time ends. This is

expected to be a permanent change,

however, I expressed to the Parish

Council that it would need to be

evaluated after several months to see if

it is better serving our members or if it

is causing concerns or hardships for our

members and would need to be restored.

One final note, in last fall’s Carpenter’s

Journal I mentioned my hope to begin a

long range strategic planning process,

similar to the recently completed

archdiocesan process to achieve its new

5 Year Strategic Plan. The process to

arrive at a suitable survey for your input

took most of the past 9 months and you

should have already received the survey

in a separate mailing as well as

information to access the survey

electronically. The link is:

www.surveymonkey.com/r/

stjosephchurch. If you have not already

completed and returned your survey,

then may this issue of the Carpenter’s

Journal serve as a reminder to you. The

hoped for deadline for submission of

completed surveys is October 19.

I have been immensely and richly

blessed by my time spent with you here

at St. Joe’s and also with St. Michael’s

Parish in Fairfield. Your many

kindnesses to me, your affirmation and

support of me these past 10 years, and

most importantly your continued

prayers for me and the community of St.

Margaret Mary will support me and

hold me up as I move to this new

assignment the Archbishop has for me.

My new parish is located right across

the street from the Oxmoor Mall, so it

should be easy for you to find if you are

in the area and in need of weekend

Mass while in Louisville. You are

remembered with fondness.

Your Servant in Christ,

Love,

Fr. Bill

from Fr. Bill’s quill

Father Bill,

Thank you for your leadership over

the past 10 years.

We will miss you very much!

You are always welcome at

St. Joe’s!

Love,

Your St. Joseph Parish Family

Introducing Fr. Terry Bradshaw

Although I was born in Harlingen, Texas (2/24/54), my

family roots are in Kentucky since before Statehood in 1792. My

father was in the Air Force and we moved back to Kentucky in

1956. I am the oldest of 9 children. My brother Dale, my father,

and my brother Martin have all passed into the Kingdom of

Heaven.

Dad worked at GE for a time and then went into full time farming. Later he added home

construction to supplement the family income. He and mom taught me a strong work ethic; many

skills; a love of nature; and most importantly the beauty of the Catholic faith life.

I went to St. Augustine grade school and appreciated the Sisters of Loretto. At Marion County

High, I was blest to be taught by 5 Ursuline sisters of Mt. St. Joseph. I then went on to

Bellarmine and the seminary program there from 1972-76. I first majored in math and then

Philosophy. Inspired by Bishop Flaget and Martin John Spalding, I went to St Mary’s Seminary

and University in Baltimore, Maryland.

My mother is related to Mother Catherine Spalding. As a priest, I was blest to serve 12 years at

Presentation Academy as Chaplain.

I was ordained on May 31, 1980 at the Basilica of Saint Joseph Proto-Cathedral. This was a

historic moment since all other ordinations were celebrated in Louisville since 1881.

My first assignment was at St. Martha in Louisville (1980-85). My other assignments have been

St. Joseph (1985-87) with Fr. Clarence Howard; St. Bartholomew (1987- 1999); St. Athanasius

(1999-2010), and Saint Bernadette (2010- 2015). Additionally, I have studied in Israel (1983)

and in Rome (1992).

I was appointed Consulter to the Archbishop (2008-present) and Chair of the Archdiocesan

Building Commission (2011- present).

Of greatest importance is to love Christ and to desire what God desires. Only in the Holy Spirit

can we do so. This has ultimate consequences and is the source of all Blessings. I join you in

this pilgrimage of faith, hope, and love. I take up the mantle of my dear classmate, Fr. Bill

Hammer, as your pastor and fellow pilgrim.

Blessings,

Fr. Terry
