OVERVIEW
Case 22840 consisted of seventeen (17) soil samplesanalyzed for metals by ITAS, Pittsburgh Laboratory(ITPA) according to the Contract Laboratory Program(CLP) Routine Analytical Services (RAS) Statement ofWork (SOW) ILM03.0.
SUMMARY
All analytes except antimony (Sb) were successfullyanalyzed in all samples.
The data were validated according to the IMI Levelprocedures, which includes the review of all QA/QCforms except the ones for the Contract RequiredDetection Limit (CRDL) standard recovery, and excludesthe review of the raw data.
Areas of concern with respect to data usability aregiven below according to the seriousness of theproblem.
MAJOR PROBLEM
The matrix spike recovery was extremely low (< 30%) forthe Sb analyte. The quantitation limits for thisanalyte are unusable and have been qualified "R".
MINOR ISSUES
The ICP serial dilution results were outside thecontrol limit (10% D) for the zinc (Zn) analyte.

The reported results for this analyte are estimated andhave been qualified "J".
The preparation blank had a negative result withabsolute value greater than the IDL for the Sb analyte.The quantitation limits for this analyte may be biasedlow. The "UL" qualifier for this analyte has beensuperseded by the HRn qualifier previously mentioned.
MOTES
The laboratory analyzed the arsenic (As), lead (Pb) ,'selenium (Se) and thallium (Tl) analytes using the ICPmethod (trace analyzer), and had IDL values less thanCRDL.
The laboratory flagged on the Form Is, the copper (Cu),Pb and mercury (Hg) analytes with an "*" denoting thelaboratory duplicate results outside the contractualcontrol limit (20% RPD). Since these results werewithin the technical control limit for soil samples(35% RPD), no action was taken.
The laboratory flagged on the Form Is, the vanadium(V) analyte with an "E" denoting the ICP serialdilution result outside the control limit. Since thisresult (10.1%) is within the limit when rounded off, noaction was taken.
Soil sample results are calculated on the basis of theraw data values (in ug/L), the gram weight of sampleused, the volume of the digestate, and the % solidsaccording to the following formula:

To obtain quantitation limits, insert the IDL (Form X)for the raw value; refer to Form XIII to obtain eachsample preparation weight and volume used. Thequantitation limits thus obtained are specific for eachsample and preparation method.

Shipment
Sixteen soil samples were received at the ITAS Pittsburgh Laboratory on October 29 and November1994, for metals analysis.
Metals
A duplicate digestion and a matrix spike were performed on sample MCND50. A serial dilution wasperformed on sample MCND51.
The matrix spike recovery exceeded the 75 to 125 percent control limit for antimony. All associatedresults were flagged with an "N" qualifier.
The serial dilution percent difference exceeded the control limit for vanadium and zinc. All associatedresults were flagged with an "E" qualifier.
The duplicate digestion RPD exceeded the 20 percent control limit for copper, iron, and mercury. Allassociated results were flagged with a "*" qualifier.
Sample MCND51 was over the calibration range for mercury, and required dilution.
