When Lise Laforce and I founded OPAL-RT in 1997, our vision was that a real-time simulator would be on every engineer’s desk due to the rapid progression of commercial processing technologies. We pioneered the use of standard commercial computer and operating systems for real-time simulation and, twenty years later, I am proud to see that this vision has become a reality.

The ease of use, combined with costs for the customer, are key in our process of making simulation accessible to all.

We have the ability to assist clients who must design complex and fast dynamic systems by using parallel calculations. In fact, that’s how we got the name OPAL-RT: “Ordinateur Parallèle, Applications Logicielles Temps-Réel” (Parallel Computer Applications, Real-Time Software).

Over the years, OPAL-RT has become a world leader in power electronics real-time simulation used in automotive, aerospace and industrial markets by supplying open and powerful simulation systems that make use of the latest commercial technology.

HARDWARE-IN-THE-LOOP (HIL)Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation is the standard for developing and testing the most complex control, protection and monitoring systems. When performing HIL simulation, the physical plant is replaced by a precisely equivalent computer model running in real-time on a simulator appropriately equipped with inputs and outputs (I/Os).

• Save time accurately reproducing the plant and its dynamics, together with sensors and actuators, providing comprehensive closed-loop testing without the need for testing on real systems

• Reduce costs by developing and testing with a simulated plant on a HIL simulator• Reduce risk by simulating dangerous testing scenarios, thereby enhancing the safe operation of a

plant

RAPID CONTROL PROTOTYPING (RCP)With RCP, mathematical models are automatically imported (typically from MATLAB/Simulink™) into a real-time simulator configured with I/O interfaces, before being connected to real-world systems.

POWER HARDWARE-IN-THE-LOOP (PHIL)PHIL simulation represents a natural extension of HIL, in which the real-time simulation environment is capable of exchanging not just low-voltage, low-current signals, but the power required by the Devices under Test (DUT).

• Bridge the gap between DUTs with power amplifiers for higher power and the low-level simulator I/Os, all while providing the necessary feedback to properly close the loop

• Power amplifiers are selected for user applications based on their closed-loop performance and ability to generate and absorb power

• Accurately reproduce the plant and its dynamics, together with sensors and actuators, providing comprehensive closed-loop testing without the need for testing on real systems

• Reducing risk, cost and the overall time required to test complex embedded systems

SOFTWARE-IN-THE-LOOP (SIL)With SIL simulation, engineers can use a PC to test and modify their source code, by directly connecting software to a digital plant model substituting for costlier systems, prototypes or test benches.

• Test software prior to the initialization of the hardware prototyping phase, significantly accelerating the development cycle

• Early detection of system-level defects or bugs, significantly reducing the costs of later stage troubleshooting

HYPERSIM is the only real-time digital simulator with the ability to simulate and analyze very large-scale power systems with several thousand nodes. It is used for factory acceptance and system integration testing, as well as for R&D and commissioning tests.

eMEGASIM is the fastest Simulink-based real-time simulator for developing and testing protection and control systems using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation.

ePHASORSIM simulates electro-mechanical transient stability phenomen in very large power grids with thousands of buses, generators, transformers, transmission lines, loads and controllers.
