SYNOPSIS This is the story of an intelligent and mischievous Leprechaun and a foolish boy known as ‘Clever’ Tom. Leprechauns are famous for having lots of gold, so when Clever Tom finds Shamus, the leprechaun of our story, he tries to get his fortune. However, Shamus is a very clever Leprechaun and won’t give away his treasure so easily. Also, Leprechauns love a good prank and hardly ever miss a chance to play tricks on humans. Will Clever Tom fall for Shamus’ tricks? Will Clever Tom get his fortune?

AIM: Getting to know the characters and setting of the play.

WORKSHEET 1 FLASHCARDS Use the flashcards so that students learn the names that will be useful for the play: Leprechaun; Ireland; Crock/pot of gold; Shamrock; Field; Bait; Shovel/spade; Trap; Weed; Clever Tom; Waterfall; Ribbon Note: make sure you teach them that the Leprechaun is clever and that ‘Clever’ Tom is in fact a fool.

AIM: Getting to know what a Leprechaun is

WORKSHEET 2 This is an exercise to teach students what a Leprechaun is. Some sentences are false. Students should try to do this exercise based on what they know. In case they know nothing about Leprechauns they should be able to use internet to find out which sentences are true and which aren’t. After finding out which sentences are false and which are true, you can tell them to test their partners, by asking them questions based on the sentences (e.g. Where do Leprechauns come from?; Do Leprechauns always wear red?). Tell your students to imagine they catch a Leprechaun and that they are entitled to ask for three wishes. What are your three wishes? Key: 1-True; 2- False; 3- False; 4- True; 5- False; 6- True; 7- False; 8- True Note: The correct grammar structure should be Second Conditional, but since it depends on the age group you can use the Present Simple.

Key: Tom, he needs a rainbow/ He can’t wait/ To catch my brother/ With the bait/ We’ll put it by the waterfall/ In the pool/ Tom, he really is a fool

AIM: Make your own Shamrock and help Clever Tom

WORKSHEET 4 Cicle Medio only Explain to students that Clever Tom needs 4-leaf clovers (shamrocks) to catch a Leprechaun (Shamus’s brother Liam) and become rich. 4-leaf clovers are very hard to find! Make your own 4-leaf clover and during the play you can help Clever

Tom by giving it to him!

Tom will need a trap to try to catch Liam. Use Liam and the trap to teach prepositions of place. Tell your students to cut Liam and the trap out and use them. More suitable for C.M.

What you'll need: A glass of water (about three quarters full) White paper A sunny day Instructions: Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good). Hold the glass of water (being careful not to spill it) above the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water, refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colors on your sheet of paper. Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect. What's happening? While you normally see a rainbow as an arc of colour in the sky, they can also form in other situations. You may have seen a rainbow in a water fountain or in the mist of a waterfall and you can even make your own such as you did in this experiment. Rainbows form in the sky when sunlight refracts (bends) as it passes through raindrops, it acts in the same way when it passes through your glass of water. The sunlight refracts, separating it into the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
