God bless,

Stephen WilsonCollege Principal

What is the secret to having a good reputation and being respected by the people that know you? What about God? Can we win His favour and have a good name in His sight? The wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon wrote the following in Proverbs 3:3-4:

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;bind them around your neck,

write them on the tablet of your heart.4 Then you will win favour and a good name

in the sight of God and man.

Love in this context is the predetermined commitment to love and being merciful regardless of the qualifications of the people you love. In other words, I choose to love you not because of who you are, but because that’s who I am. Faithfulness can also be translated as ‘truth’ and can be understood as saying and doing ‘truth’. What do you think? Is Solomon right?

When I think of a loving and faithful person, they are typically well appreciated by others because they genuinely care for others and are faithful and true. On the other hand, if someone is selfishly unfaithful and twists the truth for their own ends, they tend to sabotage and undermine their own standing in the community.

It’s interesting to note that Jesus was described as being ‘full of grace (love) and truth”. These 2 virtues compliment and balance each other and are often linked together. We are told in another scripture to ‘speak the truth in love’. I don’t think that Solomon was telling us the secret to becoming popular as much as encouraging these virtues to become part of who we are, and motivated by being a blessing to others. If we are simply motivated by being popular we might be able to fake love and faithfulness for a while, but Solomon is encouraging us to be like Jesus who was ‘full’ of love and faithfulness. It’s got to come from the heart and be like a neckless that we wear all the time. As we start a new term, I know that if these two virtues are evident in our school community, not only will we be a blessing to each other, but it will be honouring to God.

We’re thankful to God for our MPC refurbishment tender which has come in under budget. I think this is the first time that we haven’t had to adjust our plans to fit the budget. Construction work will be commencing shortly.

Royal Life Saving Visit

There is a planned visit from Royal Lifesaving to speak to the Primary students about safety on Thursday 30th August at 12:00pm. Parents are welcome to attend.

Primary Tutoring

Wednesday afternoon tutoring has commenced for this term and last day will be Wednesday 5th September (week 8). This earlier finish is due to camps and excursions that are happening in weeks 9 and 10.

Reading at Home- Questions to ask

Reading is a regular inclusion in homework for all Primary year levels and on most nights. How can you as parents get the most out of the 10 minutes of oral reading? Oral reading is about more than saying the words on the page. It is also about understanding what the words, phrases and sentences mean (comprehension). Following are some questions that you could ask before, during and after reading to help with the development of comprehension skills. Also listed are the comprehension skills that the questions target. My suggestion would be to pick one or two questions from each section every time a child reads. The questions are suitable for all grade levels, but may need to be reworded, depending on the age of the child.

At the beginning of a new book What do you think this book will be about? Why do you think that? What characters do you think might be in this story?

Predicting

What do you know about the topic of this book? Do you remember when we went……………? (if same topic as book) Does the topic of the book remind you of anything you know or have done?

Connecting

What questions would you like to ask the author about this book? What are you wondering as you look at the cover and back of this book?

Questioning

During Reading What do you think will happen next? Why? How do you think the characters will handle this situation?

Predicting

Why do you think the character did………..? What must of happened here that the author didn’t tell us? What emotion is the character feeling? How do you know? How are you like different to this character?

Inferring

What would you have done if you were the character? Can you remember if anything like this has happened to you? Does it remind you of something? How would you have felt if that happened to you? Do you know someone like this character?

Connecting

As you’ve been reading, what pictures have been inn your mind? What does the character/setting look like in your mind? Tell me what were you imagining as you read this page/paragraph?

Visualising

Can you put what you just read in your own words? What happened to this character so far? Tell me the most important things your read today and the order how they happened.

Summarising

Is this making sense to you? Wait, what’s going on here? Would it helped you to understand if we slowed down? Do you need to reread that part? What does this word mean? Where did you stop understanding? How can we fix that?

Monitoring Comprehension

After Reading What is the main message in this book? What does the author want you to think about?

Inferring

What questions would you like to ask the author right now? Questioning Tell me the story in your own words. Retell the most important events in the story.

Summarising

What were the most important events in the story? Main idea

JULY has been wonderful. After two weeks of vacation care (bike riding around the school, long “adventure” walks, lots of craft), we launched into Term 3 with enthusiasm.

A select group of Pre-Preps are participating in an extension program where they visit Ningana and engage in literacy and numeracy activities one-on-one with a “Nana or Pop”. We had our first visit in week 1 and the children (and the oldies!) loved it.

Kindy children have enjoyed their new climbing and play equipment in the front yard, as well as exploring road safety. They have “read” different signs, practiced going across the zebra crossing in the carpark and practiced stopping and starting using green and red lights.

The centre also hosted a Pyjama Day to raise funds for The Asthma Council.

Prayer Points

Devotion

A sign on a church notice board read, 'Try God Week.' The idea was simple enough; if you try Him for a week and don't like the results, you can go back to your old life again. Peter didn't tell the crowd on the Day of Pentecost to try God for a week. He preached, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.' (Acts 2:38-39)

A fish doesn't try water; it needs water in order to survive. A plant doesn't try soil; it needs soil in order to grow. Likewise, you don't try God; you

need God because there's a void within you only He can fill. And He wants to do more than just come into your life; He wants to take over your life! 'But I struggle with certain weaknesses,' you say. The truth is we're all born with certain proclivities; some are just more obvious than others. That's why every one of us needs to be 'born again'. (John 3:3) As Jesus explained to Nicodemus, although he had a natural birth he needed a spiritual birth to enter God's Kingdom. Salvation and the guarantee of Heaven take place immediately; all you have to do is put your trust in Christ. But submitting to the lordship of Jesus is a project you'll be working on form the new birth to the New Jerusalem.

Try God

'Then Peter said to them, "Repent..."''Acts 2:38

Please join us in:

Boarding NewsThe Boarding House was a buzz of excitement with everyone returning after holidays, wanting to see their fellow boarders and catch up on each others news. On top of everything the Year 7s and 8s could hardly wait to go on camp on Wednesday morning. It was great to watch and see all the enthusiasm of the return after only two weeks away.

Recently I heard a sermon which spoke about the three R’s of Life - Responsibility, Respect and Relationships. As a reminder to the Boarders I have placed a copy of this on the dining room wall. I believe as our Boarding family continues to grow Spiritually and Academically these three life values will continue to help them reach their full potential in their future both here at the College and beyond.

Amos, Gemma, Riley and Sam doing their best in the long jump events.

Everybody enjoyed the sports day on the last day of Term 2.

Once again our Boarding students did well in their events.

The full time Boarders enjoyed an end of Term ten pin bowling trip to Toowoomba.

With half our Boarders away at camp the activities were somewhat quieter for the first week of Term3.

Spanish Students Hit the World StageHola from the Spanish classroom. In June we had our 110 Spanish students compete in the Language World Championships ran by Education Perfect. The 10 day online competition included more than 350,000 students from more than 2,200 schools spanning across 28 countries and 18 languages. Our focus was Spanish. Students earned points for correct translations of questions between languages.

Our top achievements as a school include:- 2nd for Spanish in QLD from 129 schools- 6th for Spanish in the 101-250 students category from 304 schools (globally)- 8th for Spanish in Australia from 712 schools- 11th in QLD for 101-250 students category from 70 schools (all languages)- 58th overall in QLD from 211 schools (all languages)- 92nd out of 426 schools In our category of 101-250 (globally, all languages) - 299th overall in Australia from 1,38 schools (all languages)- 418th out of 1,476 schools (globally, all languages)

Individual Certificates were awarded as follows to 31 of our students:- 15 x Credit Certificate 500+ points and top 20% of competitors - 12 x Bronze Certificate 1,000+ points and top 10% - 1 x Silver Certificate 2,000+ points and top 5% - 3 x Gold Certificate 3,000+ points and top 2%

The stats are impressive for our first year competing with an enrolment of 110 students seems small in comparison to others ranging to more than 1,000 students. What I have found most pleasing and what I am most proud of is students’ efforts to pull together across all year levels to contribute to the College’s overall result and the enthusiasm and efforts of individual students. Student responses and feedback to using Education Perfect and competing in the Language Perfect World Championships has been overwhelmingly positive.

Muchas gracias,Mr. Perriotte
