from Pastor Liz Leavitt . . .
Dear CCU Ohana,
Well, it seems the summer is finally drawing to a close and it's time to look
ahead to fall. I am grateful for those of you that have been able to join us on
our summer journey in worship where we've hit up old hymns and explored
some new (not-always-biblical) texts. It has been a fun journey for me and I
am grateful for CCU and its penchant for intellectual exploration. So, perhaps
you are asking, what's next?
I'm excited to let you know that the council has just received some very good
news: our congregation has been awarded a grant by the Presbytery of the
Pacific to expand last year's Blues Vespers service into a series of outdoor
services to begin this fall: Vespers on the Lanai. This is big news!! Given the
very positive response to our Blues service, we are excited to explore what
other musical genres and groups can help us explore spiritual realities in new
ways and welcome our community to join us in doing so.
That said, now that we've received these awarded funds, it's time to get
planning!! We will be looking for some volunteers to help guide this new
program: a few folks to serve on a team that can do some work with the
landscaping in our courtyard and a few others who are willing to serve on a
planning and set-up/take down team for the actual events. Please think about
August 2016 Ka Elele Aloha Page 1 of 14
whether or not you might be called to serve in this way and get engaged with
this new and exciting ministry. At the very least, please keep your eye on your
inbox and church bulletin for news of our first installment...and be ready to
attend and invite your friends and neighbors.
You know, in the space of this summer, I've had some time for looking back at
the 18 months we've spent together and realized we've said a lot of goodbyes
in just the short time I've been here. Folks moving here and there, making
transitions, some going on to dwell with God. Though this may make our hearts
heavy, perhaps it can also give us energy and vision for imagining what new
folks God is sending into our midst and how we might welcome them. I hope
you, like me, are excited for what possibilities lie ahead for growing our ministry
and our proclamation of God's good news.
And so we press on, Together!!
With aloha,
Liz

Gratitude Corner!
Starting a new tradition for our
CCU newsletter, here is a new
space where we can offer thanks to
those who have gone above and
beyond in service to others and to
our ministry this month. (If you
have a submission, email our office!)
This month, we give our greatest:
THANKS to Paul Haring for
overseeing the installation of our
new air conditioning unit. We are
grateful we can continue to keep
cool and dry as we worship together.
THANKS to Keith Zeilinger and
Rollo Scheurenbrand for replacing
the door to the utility room which had
fallen off. Looks great!
THANKS to George and Marianne
Wyman and John Stiles for
covering in the office while our office
manager, Dana, was away on
vacation.
Update on Music Director
Search
The job announcement for our new
Director of Music has been
completed and circulated through
numerous local networks. The job
description, developed in response
to congregational feedback and
honed in additional discussions with
a small team of volunteers, has been
finished and posted to our website
and Facebook page. You can help
this process by letting friends,
family and contacts know we are
in a search. You never know who
may be connected to just the right
person so please direct any
interested parties to our website.
You can also be in prayer for the
person God is preparing for this
role and ask that s/he be brought
into our midst swiftly with a bright
vision for the future of our music
ministry. Thank you!

servant to our music program in this
time of transition and we thank him
for his patience, diligence, hard work
and willingness to serve!!
We're looking for interested parties
to join the Vespers on the Lanai
planning and landscaping teams.
See Pastor Liz if you are interested!
Building Updates

with some renovations in their office
space (B5) and will relocate in the
Calling all lovers of peace!!
We'll be focusing on the theme of
peace during our worship time in
October and we'd love to have brief
(2-3 minute) testimonies each
week from various church
participants about what the work
of peacemaking means to
them/has meant in their lives. Are
you willing to share? You will receive
ample guidance and coaching from

cheer as we continue to make our
building beautiful and functional for
ministry. If you have any questions
about these updates or our church
schedule, please don't hesitate to
