March 2016 From the Helm by Bob Bohnet The month of March brings us the first day of spring, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter Sunday, Spring Training Baseball, NCAA March Madness, and Daylight Savings Time begins. So, the club should be filled with members watching sports and celebrating holiday events. Please watch for the latest news about our St. Patrick’s Day Party. We will have one of our club’s favorite Annual Buffets on Easter Sunday! You’ll find announcements on the members boards inside the club. We will finish the month getting ready for our Annual Parking Lot Sale scheduled for the weekend of April 2nd & 3rd. Not to mention, an extra hour of light each day. You Betcha! February brought us two cruise-ins. Vallejo Yacht Club and Pittsburg Yacht Club both visited our club. Valentine’s weekend was full of activity. We had a great Friday night dinner for our members and those of the Vallejo YC downstairs in the Regatta Room. Then, Saturday night, we all had a great time at our Annual Valentines Party. The food was great, the service was great, and the music performed by Marcella Hooks and Friends was a perfect match for a Valentines Evening. I would like to thank Deb Selman for setting up the Valentines party. Helpers included Susan Linn, Virginia Fontaine, Jackie Ramos, Ed and Linda Perz. And then, for the icing on the cake for the weekend, we had a wonderful Valentine’s Day Sunday Brunch. We had fifty people enjoy brunch that morning. NICE!!! Also, in February, we brought back Movie Night. Thank you to Penny Stell for putting out the movie schedule. This has become a well attended event. But as Murphy’s Law would have it, our project bit the dust half way through the first movie. Thank you, Jay Stewart, for facilitating the purchase of a new projector. Thanks to all the members who donated handsomely to the purchase of a new projector, you know who you are. A big upgrade I might add. There is no stopping us now…It’s Showtime! Finally, I would like to give a big thanks to Barbra Brooks for spearheading the Peter Oswald memorial. This well attended reflection on Peter’s life brought to us some wonderful stories about Peter Oswald. This side of Peter we would not necessarily know. Staff Commodores Sue Garske and Paul Brighton spoke. Eight bells performed by Staff Commodore Bob DuBois. Now for some club business. In March the 3rd quarter dues bill will be sent out. And yet, we still have some members who haven’t paid the 2nd quarter dues. PLEASE be considerate and pay your dues on time. Finally, we have to repair the kitchen washing room floor. It cannot wait any longer. Repairs will be made from March 9 through the morning of March 16. There will be no food service during this week. The kitchen will be closed. By the time you read this Daniel and I will have figured out ways to make food available at the bar. By the way, the Norton Lounge will stay open with usual hours while the work is being done. May your pot of gold Be the friends you hold.

The month of March brings us the first day of spring, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter Sunday, Spring Training Baseball, NCAA March Madness, and

Daylight Savings Time begins.

But as Murphy’s Law would have it, our project bit

the dust half way through the first movie.

May your pot of gold

While trying to come up with a title to my articles, I remembered my service days. Those of you who were in the service will remember 'Close Order Drill'. Hence the Title. I want to thank you for your vote in the last election. As George M. Cohan said "My mother

Thanks You. My Father Thanks You. My Sisters Thank You and I Thank You!The Super Bowl party was a great success. Thank you John Ash and Mark Conners for provid-

ing the meat and Richard Boltz, who did the cooking and all the members who brought sides. A special Thanks to Deborah Selman and her hard working crew for the decorations and for

planning a great Valentines Party. It was nice to have Marcella Hooks and Friends providing the music for this function. Marcella

CRUISING NOTEBOOK - March 2016 By Ken Oxman

Since my last Notebook we have had the Vallejo Cruise Out in January and the Annual Cruisers Award Dinner in early February where Merle and Cheryl Kleinschmidt received the Cruiser of the Year Award. We just completed Delta Marina Cruise Out in Rio Vista, they are history. Cruise Directors Steve and Dee Gilliland (yes they brought their land yacht) did a great job of pulling the Cruise Out together. There will be a separate article shortly about that.

Planning is well underway for our next Cruise Out to the Pittsburg Yacht Club in March. Signup sheets will be out soon. This is another great opportunity for land cruisers to join us. There are a number of motels in the area if you chose to join us.

The current 2016 Cruise Out schedule is shown below. Mark your calendars.

My Sincere Appreciation and House Report by House Chair Barbra Brooks

Unedited

What’s not to like about a volunteer club? If it slipped your mind, ours is, a volunteer club. There is something that every member can contribute, please step forward, including children. Crafters, you just might be able to contribute by making decorations. Members that work with things with wood and such, I have a few ideas. Think about your hobby, your skill or interest might be appreciated at the club. As you know there is a lot involved in running a yacht club, and maintaining it; lots of helping hands needed in all areas. You may be asking yourself why is she talking about this? Because HOUSE requires lots of helping hands on a regular basis, due to repairs and improvements of this old building. Please know your time and donations are never taken for granted, and are always used for the “Good of the Club”. I’d like to say a Huge thank you to ALL that step up and volunteer for the club with all of the different committees and events.

IMPROVEMENT DAY(s) at BYC In the last few months numerous volunteers have given back to the club by assisting me, the House Chair, Barbra Brooks. While receiving well-deserved satisfaction, I am proud to say, numerous items were taken care of.

I’d like to say THANK YOU, thanks, and thank you again to… In no particular order, and not including ‘regulars’ who do things off and on, I’d like to

thank the following people: Jerry Morgan, Garske family; Sharon, Joe Jr., Susan, and Christine, Randy Norman, Lori

Campbell, Candy Burrows, Director Don Radigan, Director Bob Surratt, Sam Allison, Mark Conners, Bill Ritter, Ginny Fontaine, Diane Faustino, Sue Kleiman, Jackie Ramos,

Irma McIntosh, Joey Leggitt, Director Susan Linn, Michael Rudy, and House Chair Barbra Brooks

I really appreciate the Benicia Marina Corp. for the use of their golf-cart and pull along mini trailer, complete with driver P.J. Thank you.

Thanks to former member Stephen David provided pick-up. A huge thanks for Supplies/material donation(s): Thank you Pat Bowers (newer member), Jerry Morgan, Bob Surratt, Candy Burrows, Mark Conners, and Randy

Norman. I’ll also thank Michael Rudy for keeping my fuel tank full so that I can run the roads

… All “For the Good of the Club” Thank You Worker B’s

The Lounge ladies room has had some finishing touches applied. if you have not seen the room, you’ve been away too long. Candy Burrows has re-constructed the storage bench settee cushion and Lori sewed the window coverings, the ladies room looks good ladies, with your help! The material was repurposed from two drapery panels.

Sue L. washed all the window ledges and the wainscoting in the Regatta room. She and Barbra washed all the closet doors and woodwork. Barbra primed and painted the South end wall, where all the white doors are. In painting this wall white it elongated and brightened up the entire room. As well as complimenting the renovated adjoining southwest wall. During November, Joe constructed and inserted over-lay panels for the three-existing

Page 7: From the Helm 2016 Wind Word.pdf · Oswald Garden at the Benicia Yacht Club c/o Barbra Brooks, 143 Merano Street, Danville, CA 94526. While trying to come up with a title to my articles,

Murals. Susan, Sharon and Christine all had a part with the new design of sailboat fabric. Barbra designed the framed burgee the panel. If you haven’t seen this, take a peek, the framed info about the burgee and club is interesting. Jerry cut, painted and installed the gold frame trim. He is responsible for all the gold trim in that room, thanks Jerry.

Regatta room linoleum was pulled and had tears where it joined carpet. Bob S. took on this repair and called in Sam for assistance. Job well done! While they were finishing up they noticed a broken section of the bar upholstered armrest. Bob and Sam went back to work, these talented fellows dismantled, designed and reconstructed it on short notice. This section will out live the building. The fantastic re-upholstering job was done by Candy Burrows of C. Canvas dropped everything and “Bing, Bang, All Done” She did a Beautiful job.

Oh the joys of a very old two-story building!!! An overflow of the glass sanitizer in the bar upstairs damaged Regatta room ceiling tiles. Yep it’s true - water runs a long way! The tile was replaced by Jerome and Barbra sprayed the stain to ‘cover-up’ numerous tiles.

Bob S and Don are responsible for the bright glass globes on all the indoor light poles. They removed all of the globes and washed and HAND dried them, Let them shine, shine, shine… Later on, Commodore Bob took advantage of a LED sale; that benefited Norton Lounge. Don has replaced the pole light bulbs, with the dimmable LED bulbs. Lighting at the club can be problematic, too many bulbs, all having a wattage requirement, or we blow circuits. If you replace a bulb please make sure wattage match, or don’t replace until proper bulb can be obtained.

The weather directed Michael to dedicate his entire Friday re-establishing much needed order to the front grounds and flowerbeds. He pruned the trees and shrubs, pulled weeds, picked up debris and then hand swept the entire area! He worked on every area you see out front! A huge thanks to him for that. The dumpster area, the recycle / wood storage shed; and kitchen stockade/junk pile have not yet been cleaned up, that would have to be another full day, anyone up for that task?

Nice Job Mike! Want to help organize this mess?

Page 8: From the Helm 2016 Wind Word.pdf · Oswald Garden at the Benicia Yacht Club c/o Barbra Brooks, 143 Merano Street, Danville, CA 94526. While trying to come up with a title to my articles,

Bob S picked up the ball and spent entire day Sunday cleaning and organizing that mess. It appears those three areas had become a disorganized dumpsite! House bb had asked for cardboard to be stored for lawn project. Unfortunately it wasn’t stored neatly. Marina P.J., Mark and Bob, loaded up the cardboard and gardening rocks to be transported to other side of club. Between runs, Bob S carried on by filling his pickup bed with all sorts of stuff’. Some he plans on refurbishing, some went to other locations. Great job fellows!

Randy took care of replacing the four banks of outdated spotlights in the Regatta Room. I switched them out for a smaller version and Randy moved the brackets so they are less noticeable. He also repaired two sets of florescent overhead lights in the dishwashing room. The dishwashers say a big thanks for that! Randy is also working on relocating the Regatta room speakers. They are great sounding, but stand out too much. We found new locations that will work. Don worked on the rope lights on the lower back deck, they all work again. He also added some rope light by the North walkway entrance, now it is well illuminated for our safety.

Bill and Mark helped me in Norton Lounge. They relocated the clothes rack. It’s in same area but on a different wall. We also removed the large black damaged sofa from the

family room, we had to dismantled it to make it easier to get down the stairs. The sectional from the fireplace area was moved into the family room. This opened up some space for dining. Irma spent the afternoon sorting through and organized the items in the

family room. Diane, Jackie and Barbra deep cleaned the lounge corner dining area. Jackie does windows! Sue K. worked the room with her hand held vacuum, cleaning dust

and bits of debris. With limited hours, the janitor cannot keep up with all that needs to be done around the

club. Members, please extend a helping hand, It’s our club let’s try to keep it clean.

Ginny, Joey and Barbra took on cleaning the upholstered dining chairs, which was quite a project! No Bob S not as difficult as your project, but still difficult. There are always things to be done, so when you see the announcement, please plan on lending a helping hand for a few hours. We work in teams.

In the future, an improvement that I’d like for the Regatta room would be a new counter top for behind the bar.

Anyone remodeling? If you have a slab of counter top please let me know.

You may have noticed that ‘things’ are being done on the North back lawn. This will be a work in progress for the next few months. If anyone has concrete blocks and or stepping stones and that you don’t need, Please contact Barbra Brooks, I’ll use them out there.

A rich man who was very close to his money got together with three of his friends. One of those friends was a sailor. He then announced that he was dying and had less than a month to live. He then handed each of them an envelope with $100,000 in it and asked each of them to do him a favor after he died.

“Each of these envelopes contains $100,000” said the rich man. “Since I don’t want to go to the afterlife without my money, would you please throw these envelopes into my coffin after I die?” Everyone in the group agreed and they took the envelopes. About a month later, the rich man passed away and the group reconvened at the funeral. As promised, each man threw his envelope into the coffin before it was closed up.

As they were leaving, the first friend said: “I have a confession to make. My local church needed a new altar, so I took $5,000 out of the envelope and bought it.”

The next friend looked at his feet and said: “Since we’re coming clean, I thought it was a waste of money to bury all of it in the coffin, so I took $30,000 out of the envelope and bought the hospital a new X-ray machine.”

Both men then looked at the sailor, expecting him to also make a confession. “You guys are crooks,” said the sailor. “I didn’t take any money. I put a check in the coffin for the entire amount of $100,000.”

November 20144

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.

There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.

With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an

internet based informational blast.

It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.

Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.

I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.

As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
