From the Principal Welcome Back

It has been great to see the smiley faces in the morning as our tamariki arrive at school. Overall our tamariki have settled well into their second week and are happy to be back with their teachers and classmates.

I would like to thank you for all the wonderful work you did as ‘teachers’ over the EHS Learning at Home. For many of you, this was challenging as you juggled work, pre-schoolers and teaching ‘more than one student’ at different levels. Although challenging, I hope you enjoyed the learning experiences with your child.

Our criteria for the learning at home (which was different from school) was that it had to be accessible, achievable, engaging, fun and inclusive meaning sometimes the task could be completed with a sibling. Learning to read, write and do maths happened in multiple ways and not necessarily a formal approach as the environment was different. We have a display in our foyer of many creative ways our students were learning during this time and the many different skills they were developing.

Changes to Reporting 2020 Due to the Lockdown and time away from formal school, there will be changes to our usual reporting programme this year and a separate newsletter about this will be sent out at the end of this week.

Staff We welcome Sue Kinnear in a part time role along with Sheryl Hudson who will carry out most of the classroom release for teachers with a focus on art projects for each student that will be displayed around the school. This is to continue the value we place on the learning and communicating through the arts, and the richness that artworks bring to our environment.

From the Board of Trustees We hope all of our EHS families are staying safe and well, and it is great to see the children back at school now that we are at Level 2. The Board wishes to thank our management, teaching and support staff on guiding us through a challenging and uncertain time with Covid-19 and in showing leadership and commitment to settling all of our students back into school life and the new routines.

Welcome to the following New Students Natana E7 and Ethan B4. We hope you have many happy days and wonderful learning experiences during your time at EHS.

Skateboard and Scooter Safety

Skateboards and scooters provide children with a valuable form of exercise and transport. Learning to ride a

skateboard or scooter is an important part of play, risk taking and development. Here are some handy tips to help

keep our children safe;

Learn the helmet 2-4-1 rule

2: The helmet should be no more than two fingers above your eyebrow.

4: Adjust the straps under your ears. They should form two ‘Vs’.

1: No more than one finger should fit over the chin strap.

Be safe on scooters and skateboards

Wear correctly fitting helmets that meet an approved safety standard

Ride on the footpath, and watch out for sneaky driveways

Give way to pedestrians

Cross roads safely on foot, at pedestrian crossings

Wear elbow and knee pads when scootering, and add wrist guards when skateboarding.

See the flyer at the end of this newsletter!

Level 2 Drop Off and Pick Up Arrangements Thank you for your understanding and patience with the requirements and the changes that had to be made. Managing the release of 610 students is challenging and so the staggered release means we can still maintain, distancing and contact tracing.

Drop off - Kiss, Cuddle and Go (at any gate) Only come in if essential to the outside door of your child’s classroom. Essential is mostly for parents of new entrants who are settling back into class or just started. Either scan the QR code or use the pen/paper register.

Pick Up - Collect and Go 1. At 3.00 your child can go to the usual pick up place that you have arranged eg on Kings Cres, Pretoria Street, Professionals Gate as you usually did prior to Lockdown. Please be on time. OR 2. From 2.45pm onwards, you can go and collect your child from the outside door of your child’s classroom, either scan the QR code or use the pen/paper register. This helps to ease congestion at the school gates. However once it is 3pm, please wait outside unless you are collecting a junior child.

Please continue to maintain the 2 metre distancing.

Older siblings will collect their younger siblings and go to their meeting place. Ngā mihi

JULIE HENDERSON Principal

Staff cont. We also welcome back Anne Prichard to C3 who is taking the 3rd New Entrant class and Fiona Kerr who will be teaching in C3 on Fridays. Our new entrants are fortunate to have these fabulous teachers to get them off to a wonderful start at EHS.

We look forward to a more settled term of great learning and the beginning of some of the other opportunities for our students that can now resume.

Remember, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher if you have any queries or concerns about your child. Currently under Level 2, it is best to do this via email.

ILLNESS

We have some students who are immunosuppressed and it is essential that you notify the school office if

your child has chicken pox or measles or if anyone in your family has. Thank you.

Road Safety/Parking

Eastern Hutt school is busy before and after school. There is often lots of children—who do not always understand the danger of roads and vehicles. Make sure to take extra care when parking on the roads and streets around the school and follow the signed parking rules at all times. Please avoid drop offs and pick ups in yellow marked areas. This is to ensure road patrol can see clearly across both sides of the road and can make safe calls to allow children to cross safely. A few handy tips: say goodbye to your children on the school side of the road or at a pedestrian crossing. walk across the road and meet your children after school (never call out to them from the other side) try to leave home early to avoid arriving at the busiest times follow the directions of all signs park a safe distance from all crossings always single park (double parking causes accidents and traffic jams) try parking a few streets away from the school and walking with your children organise a car pool with other parents—to reduce the number of cars trying to park around your

children’s school.

Parents – Staff Car Park Please do not drive into the staff car park to drop off or collect your children. Children must not walk through the car park.

Library Books Due to us all being in lockdown we have a LARGE amount of books OVERDUE. Please can you search your home and send all library books back now. Thanks – Library Dragon

Spare Clothes With winter here and students having accidents or playing in puddles it would be good if your child had a spare set of clothes in their bag to change if they get wet/muddy or have an accident. If your child has borrowed some of the school’s clothes please can they be washed and returned.

Sports News It is official. Sport is back, our winter sport teams will begin training after Tuesday 2nd June. Your coaches and or manager will be contact regarding when your practices will begin, with a day and time.

The Government Guidelines at Alert Level 2 under Sport –The objective of these guidelines is to minimise the risk of transmission of the virus, and to be able to rapidly track and isolate any cases that may arise. Alert Level 2 has protocols that relate to the restrictions posed on us especially in the area of distancing and hygiene.

The key principle remains the same. You must contact your manager if anyone is feeling unwell in your family, displaying symptoms of Covid-19, awaiting a test, or required to self-isolate. You are to stay away, and not participate in any form of training or game situation.

At this stage, starting dates and competition formats are yet to be confirmed for the Hutt Valley Basketball League and Hutt Valley Netball. We will be in contact with teams, once these have been decided upon.
