FROM THE PRINCIPAL Power Problems

Like many of you, we have had a very challenging week with the power problems resulting from the storms. My apologies for the inconvenience caused, particularly with the off again, on again situation for Wednesday. When we were advised to close the school it was made quite clear that the disruption was likely to be for up to three days. As a result of our communications it is timely to remind everyone to ensure that we have your contact details. If you have an email address which we don’t have or this has changed please let us know.

Tunes in June

Last week our bands performed at the annual ‘Tunes in June’ concert. Though the weather was rather chilly the children were fantastic. It is very satisfying to see so many of them having the opportunity to play an instrument and perform as they did. Over the years since we first introduced band we have had more than 1000 children learn an instrument. Some have gone on to big and better things in music.

Motivational Speaker Invitation

Next Wednesday afternoon (1.30 pm) we will have a guest motivational speaker address our students. Lorin Nicholson, a blind cyclist and musician, has a wonderful message of resilience to tell. Children in the bands and ensemble will also enjoy a music workshop after the talk. The cost, which comes from your pre-paid excursion funds, will be $2.00. Parents or carers who would like to attend may do so free of charge.

New Kitchen

We are pleased to inform everyone that the renovations for the new kitchen are now underway. It is hoped that all work will be completed by the end of the school holidays. Mr Johnson will now hold his classes in the Science room which up until now has been used for cooking.

Gifted and Talented Programs

At our recent School Council meeting I was asked to discuss with members how Rostrata caters for gifted and talented students. Most importantly over recent years the staff have engaged in very thorough professional learning in Higher Order Thinking Skills. The expectation is that these skills are emphasised in every classroom. You may have noticed this in some of the work the children bring home or have displayed in their classrooms. Our Science program is also another area where investigating and problem solving is a high priority. Children have many opportunities to engage in activities which stretch their thinking. Essentially then, aside from PEAC where children go to special out of school classes, gifted and talented students are catered for in their own classroom rather than in withdrawal groups. It is of interest to note that fifteen of our Year 7s from last year won places in the 2012 Gifted and Talented Secondary School program. Since 2007 we have been in the top 10 schools receiving these scholarships.

Australian Curriculum

From the beginning of next Semester our teachers will be implementing the Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics and History. If you would like to know what the expectations are in the various learning areas visit the ACARA website http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/

Due to the amazing weather we have experienced in the last few days the delivery of our Cadbury fundraising chocolates has been delayed. Families can now expect to receive their box of chocolates to sell on Thursday next week (21st June) and you will now have until Thursday 26th July to return your money to us. Don’t forget for every box you sell your child will receive a ‘free drink voucher’ from the Kids Cafe and will also be helping us raise valuable funds for our school! If you are able to sell more than one box or if you have any general queries please contact [email protected].

Visit www.thefatheringproject.org

for fathering articles, tips for

busy fathers and interviews.

Number 3 of 3 simple tips I gained from the

Fathering Project for Dad’s to make an ef-

fective difference in their child’s life!

‘S’ stands for Special. Your children need to

feel that they are special! This happens

when they are treated as unique individuals;

e.g. helping them develop their own special gifts, enjoying their unique personality, and

remember their favourite things

A positive way to make this difference, (I

think I've mentioned before, but worth re-

peating), is to take the children out on Dad

dates, one child at a time. (Knowing their

turn is coming will build the anticipation for

children left behind.) If it is ‘a 1st time’, and

different to normal, its sure to be a memo-

rable new experience. Maybe it’s possible to

show them where you work?

Enrolments for 2013 are now open. Stu-dents whose birthdates fall between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009 are eligi-ble to enrol in our Kindergarten pro-gram in 2013. Application for Enrol-ment forms can be obtained from the front office. Children whose birth dates fall between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 are eligible for our Pre-Primary program. Applications close Friday 3 August, 2012. Please note you must provide your child's birth certificate, immunisation records and proof of residence within Rostrata in-take area. Students currently enrolled in Kindy and Pre-Primary must complete an appli-cation for enrolment for 2013. These will be sent home in the near future. Once students have been enrolled into Year 1 they no longer need to complete applica-tions each year.

To all parents with children graduating in 2013, please note that in term 3 we will start the process of ordering leavers shirts and jack-ets. Miss Cindy Wells from C5 will be co-ordinating the students in regards to the artwork for the back of the garments. Forms for sizing and ordering will be sent out in Term 3 with the an-ticipation of receiving the shirts with back orders at the beginning of 2013. The anticipated cost is approximately $28 for shirts and $35-$40 for jackets. Thank you. Melissa Giles…..Uniform shop Co-ordinator (along with… Jodie Davis / Dawn Griffiths / Donna Hardie / Lorna McLean)

By now parents of Year 5 and year 7 students will have received a

pamphlet on WAMSE Testing for 2012.

WAMSE Testing is similar to the NAPLAN testing years 3, 5 and 1

children took part in recently.

Our school will be involved in testing in the week beginning 6th

August. Parents who wish to withdraw their child from this test-

ing process must see their child’s teacher as soon as possible to

fill out the required form. Withdrawal forms

are available from Mr Proctor. Could parents

please return withdrawal forms to their

child’s teacher or Mr Proctor by the last day

of this term (Friday 6 July).

I have some fantastic news! Our New

Kitchen Classroom is going to be built

and finished by the beginning of Term

3. We have packed up the Kitchen

Classroom that we have been using for

the last two years and the science

department will be moving in this term.

Therefore we have cancelled cooking

cla s s e s f or no w b ut we will

recommence next term. A small

inconvenience for a fantastic outcome!!

Thank you to all my loyal and dedicated

volunteers we will not be needing your

help for the rest of the term but put

your name down for next term and be

part of a very exciting new chapter in

the Kitchen garden here at

Rostrata Primary.

A big thank you to the Gault

h t tp : / / r o s t r a t aga rden .weeb ly . co m/up loads /7 /0 /2 /9 /7029118 /timetable_for_newsletter.pdf Do you want to know when your son or daughter is in the garden? Use the link above to help you work out which week is gardening or cooking so that you can help out. Fresh vegetables and herbs for sale

Now that the new kitchen is underway there are no cooking classes. As a result we have spare fresh produce in the garden. Come on Tuesday or Thursday to the garden, check the list of available produce for sale and we will pick it as you wait. You can’t get fresher than this. All money raised goes toward more seedlings, seeds, etc for the garden. Next assembly there will be a ‘market day’ stall outside the library so if you don’t make it down to the garden it will still be fresh as it will all be harvested that morning. Garden classes

We are still gardening and planting so that a good range of produce will be available when the new kitchen is up and running. The year 4s have just

planted a full bed of broad beans and we have been donated some broc-colini seedlings which we will plant out shortly too. The chickens are very healthy and have withstood the storms nicely due to the great chicken coop that has stayed dry and warm (it’s all relative!). The fig tree

is trying to produce a second crop and the Cape Gooseberry bushes and pro-ducing an abundance of treats for the children. There is the occasional pea for prizes too. Thanks Thanks also the Quealy family and chicken whisperers who are looking af-ter the chickens when I’m not in the garden. Thanks too to the parents on class roster who stayed behind to help me put away all our potential flying objects before Tuesday night’s storm. Thanks to Mr Evans for using the whipper snipper so effectively in the garden—it looks great.

What you can do to help : ◊ Buy some produce from the assembly stall or directly from the garden on Tuesday or Thurs-

days. There will be a bigger than usual stall in front of the library next assembly ◊ Volunteer in the garden with your child’s class.

◊ Buy Worm Wiz from outside the front office. $1 for 2 litres. Instructions for how to use it

are on our webpage at http://rostratagarden.weebly.com/garden-hints.html

OSHC NEWS

Hi and welcome to our newsletter,

Wow school holidays are only a few weeks away this term

has flown by.

At Camp Australia this week we have changed our theme

from Autumn to Winter and are learning about the wonders

of winter.

Here in Perth we have been experiencing them quite vigor-

ously!

The children have been giving us lots of feedback with what

they love to do in the afternoons at Camp Australia and

their results did not surprise Tega and myself as it is what

they are doing on a daily basis.

Anyway!

Here are our results:

• Playing outside

• Drawing

• Arts and crafts

• Reading

• Homework

We have also been having fun in the kitchen making

Marshmallows (I’m happy to give the recipe to anyone who

would like to try; it is very basic) and they tasted great.

MONDAY Today we are making snow

cones for the tree.

TUESDAY We will be cooking snowmen

macaroons.

WEDNESDAY Today we will be having a dis-

cussion about Mount Everest.

THURSDAY Children will be participating in a

10 minute workout.

FRIDAY Today children will enjoy quiet

games and puzzles.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK
