The final years of schooling can be both an exciting and challenging time for students. Some are sure of the pathways they want to pursue and others are unsure of what lies ahead of them. At Cowell Area School we pride ourselves on being able to provide a variety of different pathways to cater for our students’ diverse needs and interests. School based apprenticeships and vocational education and training are now integrated into the SACE, which help those young people who do not wish to pursue a University pathway, to prepare for different post-school options and lifelong learning, and students can now combine both academic and VET subjects to complete their SACE. We would like to congratulate both Lexi and Dylan on reaching this milestone in their life, wish them all the best for their future pursuits and thank them and their families for the support they have shown for our school community over the last 13 years. Not only was last Friday a celebration and acknowledgment of our Year 12 achievements, but our whole school was invited by the SRC to join in by dressing up as something beginning with the first letter of their name. It was terrific to see so many students (primary and secondary) and staff joining in, with lots of thought and creativity put into the costumes – a great effort by all! Student Free Day We will be having a Student Free Day on Tuesday November 27 th (note change of date from last week’s newsletter). Teachers will be spending some time looking at data from this year and collaborating on the School’s Improvement Plan for the next 3 years. Staffing We are currently running 3 panels for the following positions – Community Librarian SSO, English/HASS (7- 12) and a Student Wellbeing Leader. Once these positions are filled we will be able to focus on our contract positions (teacher and SSO) for 2019. This time of the year is often a period of great uncertainty for staff in contract positions and we would like to acknowledge the great work and commitment that each of them have shown this year. There are some staff movements that we are aware of. Sharyn Williams will be leaving us at the end of the year and moving to Port Lincoln. Sharyn has been a valuable member of our Primary staff and has done a terrific job of stepping up into the Student Wellbeing Leader and Special Ed roles in the latter half of the year. We thank her for her energy and passion and wish her, Jarrod and Mac all the best in their move. Stacy Michael will be returning to us (0.6) after being on Parenting leave and Lauren Hannemann will continue her leave (to further expand her family). We welcome Stacy back and hope that all goes well for Lauren and her young family. School Uniform As we move into the warmer weather, we would like to remind parents and students of the expectations for the summer school uniform. Students are expected to wear the following: FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM Summer: Boys: Navy blue shorts, Navy/Gold polo shirt. Girls: Blue checked school skirt (currently unavailable), Blue checked school dress, Navy shorts, Navy/Gold polo shirt. (Denim shorts are not part of uniform and all shorts need to be of an appropriate length). Hats Cowell Area School has a “No Hat No Play” Policy all term and we expect all students to wear a hat during recess, lunch and extended outdoor activities. Navy hats are available from the school. Wide brim hats must be worn. Shoes For Health & Safety reasons enclosed shoes must be worn for practical subjects e.g. Tech Studies, Home Ec, Art, Science, Aquaculture Studies and P.E. If your child is in need of new shorts or tops, they are available for purchase from the front office at a reasonable price (or we are happy to work out a payment plan with you). There is also a stock of secondhand uniforms available from the Op shop if you wish to purchase these. Please help instil a sense of belonging and pride in our school and support us by sending your child to school in the correct uniform. Materials and Services charges You have recently received information in the newsletter about the proposed materials and services fees for 2019. These were approved by Governing Council and we will now undergo a polling process. This fee reflects the actual cost of goods and services needed to educate the children at our school. Governing Council is seeking support from parents through a polling process to endorse that the difference between the proposed charge and the DECD ‘standard sum’ is recoverable. A letter has been sent out outlining the process. If you have any questions about the process, please contact either Jacqui or Erin King. Votes need to be returned by Friday November 16 th . $20 Boss for Year 7s at Market Day

As part of their Business & Economics learning in HASS, the Year 7s were given a task to set up a small business, and given $20, needed to make their money grow! We spent 3 weeks planning: thinking about marketing & advertising, and making goods to sell. We were advised to be thrifty, using available resources at school and home, and using recycled goods.

On Sunday we went to Market Day to sell our wares. These were our businesses:

CBS - Charlotte, Sharni & Brock: Sold freshly made cups of lemon cordial, smiley face biscuits, succulents in decorated tins, bath bombs and pet rocks.

Galaxy World - Adara, Kori & Rhys: Sold Galaxy slime, Galaxy candle jars, stress balls, "Eggscellent Eggs", peanut biscuits, lolly bags, meringues and ice blocks.

Surfing Koalas: Kyan, Ky & Tahlia: Sold pinwheels, mini quiches, lucky dip, succulents in decorated jars, cupcakes, fudge, teacup biscuits, eggs and Guess the Lolly jar (won by Sophie Flavel)

It was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed the experience. Thank you to our families for their support, for those people who helped us set up and run our market stall on the day and for all of the people who bought our products - we really appreciate your support. We raised approximately $535 to go towards our 2019 Middle School Canberra Camp - not bad for a little class of 9 students!

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day is on Sunday 11 November. It is a significant day and this year we acknowledge 100 years since the signing of the Armistice to end World War 1.

All school students are invited to attend the Remembrance Day service that will be held near Cowell's War Memorial. Students are asked to dress in school uniform (including a broad brimmed hat), we will stand together as a group to show our respect for our RSL and community. Staff will supervise. Our SRC leaders will lay a wreath. Please be at the War Memorial by 10.40am.

If you have any questions, please contact Colleen Peters at the school.
