FROM THE PASTOR

This past Sunday afternoon, March 1st, I, along with the other priests of the diocese, received the sad news that one of our brothers, Fr. Marcin Zahuta, had died of a massive stroke. He was only 42 years old. Fr. Marcin, a native of Poland, graduated from Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan and was ordained a priest for our diocese by Bishop Robert Baker on June 3, 2006.

For the past several years, Fr. Marcin served as Chaplain at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and then as pastor of St. Thomas More Church, following the elevation of the Catholic chaplaincy at Carolina to a full-fledged parish in 2015. In his years at Carolina, Fr. Marcin did truly outstanding work. He will be greatly missed.

Fr. Marcin came to America because he wanted to be a priest in a place that desperately needed them. The situation in his native Poland is quite different, where there is no real shortage of priests. In 2005, the diocese where he grew up in Poland ordained 40 new priests and 500 priests in the 12 years prior to that. He reported that he has first felt his call to the priesthood at age 10, when he was training to be an altar boy. “When I was up on the altar, I felt like I wanted to stay close to the altar for the rest of my life,” he once said.

Our own diocese is quite short of priests. The loss of one so young and so thoroughly Catholic as Fr. Marcin Zahuta is a grievous blow.

Many things can short-circuit the vocational call that may be experienced by a boy or young man. Societal pressures, rampant consumerism, and family opposition are but a few. Another serious one is exposure to pornography, which, thanks to the internet, is readily available in overwhelming amounts. On the Covenant Eyes website, a number of free e-books are available for download. These books cover such topics as ways to break porn addiction, the effects of porn on brain chemistry, and statistics related to the use and effect of pornography. Go to covenanteyes.com and click on the “Resources” tab at the top of the page. As I said, the downloads are free.
