Volume 52 Issue #11 DECEMBER 2011/JANUARY 2012 Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
“CARING, GROWING, SERVING”
From The Pastor… n ―Preparing for Advent‖ from Sundays and Seasons:
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom has come near; repent, and believe in the good news” (Mark 1:15). Jesus, speaking for the first time in Mark‘s gospel, offers us this startling startling message. [Mark is the gospel from which this year‘s gospel texts will primarily be
taken.] The scholar Thomas Cahill, in his book Desire of the Everlasting Hills, translates this phrase:
“The time has come: the kingdom of God draws near. Open your hearts and believe the good news.” Cahill explains: “The time that has come is the time of the fulfillment of Jewish dreams, the time when God will show his special love for the Jews by breaking the binds of their servitude and exalting them among the nations. It is the time they have been waiting for – waiting so long that they had almost ceased to believe that it could ever come to pass. …They are invited to shake off their worldly preoccupations and ‗open [their] hearts.‘ The Greek imperative [verb, a command,]… means literally ‗change your minds‘‖ (New York: Doubleday, 1999, p.69).
Christians today, hearing these words, understand that Jesus is speaking not just to his Jewish contemporaries, but also to all who are willing to listen in our own place and time. But what an extraordinary thing for him to say! “The kingdom of God draws near.” [James extends the thought, as well as the invitation, when he writes, “Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you” (James 4:8a).] “Believe the good news.” Really? Really?! No wonder the season of Advent offers as its climactic story the unexpected news of a pregnancy brought to a young girl, news from out of the blue, news wholly unexpected, and news not entirely welcome. “I’m pregnant? Really? Really!?”
Mary recovers, as we know, from her initial shock and goes on to sing her great song of rejoicing, the Magnificat… [Luke 1:46-55, often sung in place of the Psalm for the day on the fourth Sunday of Advent]. But that shock – receiving good, yet unsettling, news – that shock is also something we share with Mary. For this message of Jesus is not just glad tidings of hope for a weary and war-torn world; it also is a calling, an invitation to turn from our “worldly preoccupations” and “open our hearts.” Something from us, then, is required. We’re going to have to step up, get to work, prepare, watch, wait, turn, open, change.
Advent has come again. Advent is a joyful season. It is a time of hope amid crisis, light in deep darkness, a growing
sense of expectation, a growing trust in the promises of God. Advent offers an optimistic outlook: a way of looking at the world and our troubled human problems that may seem senseless at first. “Do not be afraid,” the angel tells Mary. A nervous mother listens to the hopes of her heart. A prophet stirs people to action, encourages their expectation of a coming age of justice and peace. Wake up! The news will be good, even if, like the Judeans of Jesus‘ time, we have “almost ceased to believe that it could ever come to pass.”
God’s richest blessings in this holy season of waiting and watching and praying, as you and I together take him up on his promise to draw near!
Power to you! Pastor Pat
I

Christmas GiveAway
Thank you so much for your support of our 2011 Thanksgiving GiveAway Event. Your participation in
these events is paramount to their success and we are so thankful for our Gloria Dei volunteers and
contributors.
Our Christmas GiveAway Event will be 12/18 - 21. If you can volunteer time and/or muscle, please call
the Pantry at 258-7563. Monetary gifts can be dropped into the Sunday offering. We thank you in
advance for whatever you can give or do.
We also need Christmas gifts for "10”year olds this year. Our challenge is 30 boys/30 girls. This
event will take place in just seventeen days. If you want to help out this year, please do so soon and we
thank you for it. If “the giving” comes up short, we’ll need time to purchase enough gifts to meet the need.
Just drop your unwrapped gift at the Pantry, church office or in the church lobby.
Food items needed include: holiday foods of all sorts such as turkeys, cranberry sauce, stuffing, canned
pumpkin, gravy, canned milk, chicken broth, etc. as well as just regular items.
One last thing, during the cold weather, we especially need blankets. You can drop them off at the church
during Worship or at the Office anytime.
As usual, Eva Duffy will be coordinating lunch for the GiveAway volunteers. She will also coordinate
serving warm drinks for our clients as they stand in line. She needs help and contributions. If you can
assist her with providing food or setting up lunch, please give Eva a call at
259-1547.
We thank you in advance for your kindness and participation in this very worthy
mission of Gloria Dei. And, we wish you a Happy Christmas too, to you & yours! Thanks again!!!
We will not be serving clients on Dec.16th. We are getting things ready for the Sunday take over.
We will be closed from Dec. 22nd
thru Jan 1st and reopen on January 1, 2012.

NEW WAVE YOUTH MINISTRIES
Journey Inward by Jonathon Crouch
Pain invited my ear, "Listen to me, for I have knowledge of Truth hidden in what you fear."
Fear roared, "Do not listen to pain, it will only lead you to more discomfort!" Shame whimpered, "Remember everything that has happened to you, everyone despises you. This will not work." Courage invoked, "All fear is an illusion, walk straight ahead!"
Pride demanded, "You have everything you need already, this is a waste of time." Love whispered, "Go into this pain, it is safe. You will only discover more to love."
Ever notice how throughout a day your feelings
interpret? As you become aware of these feelings they usually lead you to thoughts. It appears that these thoughts are constructed as demands for answers to arise; such as why is this happening to me? Why did I not get noticed? These thoughts are ideas about yourself, others and how life is either giving or taking from you. Few question
these thoughts, or face the idea's of being separate, alone and unwanted. What would life be like if we embraced all of it? What would we be like if we stopped avoiding pain and ran into what we have been taught to fear.
Why do we stop going to the gym? Because we no longer engage with the benefits the pain brings us. This benefit is strength. Why do we fear the dentist? His cleaning, shots and drilling give our teeth longevity. Why do we fear conflict or confrontation with
people? Will it not expose the lies and assumptions we hide behind.
SEARCHING IN THE WRONG PLACE A neighbor found Jon on his hands and knees. “What are you searching for
Jon?” “My key.” Both men got on their knees to search. After a while the neighbor says, “Where did you lose it?” “At home.”
“Good Lord! Then why are you searching here?” ―Because it‘s brighter here.‖
The key to discovering Love is searching where you left it. Until you have the courage and the environment which allows you to fall apart, breakdown and let go, you will not experience the Life/Truth/ Experience Jesus spoke from. Jesus was not a command but an invitation to give up the meaning
we have given our lives. To lose it all for the Truth. The Truth that you have never been alone, you have never been unloved, rejected and hated. People always gave you their best, since they could only give you what they had. Search for Love where you lost it. Where did you
learn to stop loving yourself? Where did you learn that what you did was not good enough? Who told you that you were worthless, meaningless and annoying? Let anger come up, let grief stay for a while, let all the desires pushed down and forgotten come up and cry aloud.
We have worked hard seeking love in the places we were told it was hidden. Our careers, education, titles, accomplishments and activities were supposed to be the givers of meaning to our lives. As an exercise, slow down for a minute and look at these phrases below. Honestly observe which one
seems to resonate with your heart: I work to have value vs. my value determines my work. I seek love/acceptance from others vs. I love and accept everything as it is now. I am only noticeable when what I do matters vs. I notice the effort and meaning the people around
me are contributing. My body/beauty are determined by comparing myself to others vs. I view the world from this body, not for it. I will get what I want my way vs. I will be kind to everyone and everything no matter what.
The next time you find yourself in a painful situation, instead of looking for a way out, face it, welcome it and allow yourself to feel it deeply. Give pains cry for attention your full focus. You might be surprised at the amazing discoveries that await you on this journey inward.

Notice The Lord's Pantry is in regular need
of empty egg cartons with covers. No egg flat holders please. We regularly receive eggs that have one damaged egg in the carton, and it would be helpful to be able to divide the eggs among several people and provide a carton that is not damaged from broken eggs. You can leave them in the Church lobby or drop them at the Church Office or Pantry. Thank You!
ANNUAL REPORTS
Please forward your reports to Libby

THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW Special Designation
for December 2011 is
“World Vision”
What We Do World Vision does
community development, disaster relief and
advocacy.
Transforming Communities
Because poverty has both local and global
causes, World Vision work is within communities
and across geographical areas to help individuals
and groups improve the well-being of children
and overcome poverty.
Responding to Disasters
World Vision is globally positioned to help with
immediate needs like food, water and shelter
when disaster strikes and to help communities to
recover and prevent catastrophes.
Seeking Global Change
World Vision engages institutions, donors and the
general public to address the global problems
that perpetuate poverty. Advocacy staff
empower communities to speak up for their
rights, locally and globally.
Our Work
World Vision takes an holistic approach to helping
individuals and communities overcome the root
causes of poverty.
To find out more, look us up on the web at
World Vision International.
Special Designation for January 2012 is
“Youth Group Outreach”
The Gloria Dei Youth ministry is focused
on allowing life to reveal our identities in
Christ through open discussion and a
contemplative lifestyle.
One changes the world by what one
becomes. Jonathan’s experience with youth
over the year has taught him that focusing
on events vs. an inward journey only leads to
bonds of fear. Giving youth permission to
be themselves the way they currently
believe they are is the best way to help
them grow.
As a group, we constantly question any
feeling and thought that arises about
ourselves that does not reflect the Reality
of God's Love.
We would love for you to join us as we
journey into this most amazing life.
We meet weekly on Sundays at 11 a.m. for
"Check in" and 6:30 p.m. for "Engage."

MINISTRY CORNER by Donna Zimmerman, RN, Parish Nurse
Job 17:9 † “Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to the ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger.”
†
National Hand-washing Week is December 4-10.
According to the Center for Disease Control, hand washing is the most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick—anything from a cold to meningitis & hepatitis A. Children with less immunity are especially vulnerable, so they need to be taught to wash hands frequently and long enough to sing Happy Birthday twice. Hospitals have seen less cross contamination since they have enforced the hand washing techniques of workers going from one patient to another. The following is from the website: The 4 Principles of Hand Awareness are:
1. Wash your hands when they are dirty and BEFORE eating.
2. DO NOT cough into your hands.
3. DO NOT sneeze into your hands.
4. Above all, DO NOT put your fingers into your eyes, nose or mouth.
December Observances:
National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Mo.
Safe Toys and Gifts Mo. World AIDS Day 12/1 National Hand Washing Awareness Week is 12/4-10.
January Observances: Cervical Health Awareness Mo.

National Glaucoma Aware-ness Month
National Radon Action Month Thyroid Awareness Month National Folic Acid Awareness Week 1/1-1/7.
Health Sunday is December 4. As usual, blood pressure monitoring is offered. I no longer have glucose strips for the Accucheck Glucose monitor, so that is no longer available. I‘m sorry about that. Remember, if you don‘t know you have a problem, you can‘t help yourself! Many problems, if caught early, can be treated much more easily than if they progress to a more dangerous level. I‘ll be in Luther Hall following the service.
