June / July 2019 First Baptist Church, 200 East New York Avenue, Southern Pines, North Carolina 28387 From the Pastor’s Pen 2019 Pentecost Offering This year, Pentecost Sunday is June 9, a day we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church, recorded in the Book of Acts. During the months of May and June, we receive our annual Pentecost Offering. This offering supports the work of our North Carolina Woman's Missionary Union and North Carolina Baptist Men. These fine organizations teach children, youth, and adults about missions as well as provide many state, national, and inter- national hands-on missions experiences, such as supporting the work of our Honduras mission teams and coordinating disaster relief. Our goal for this year is $4,000. Envelopes are in the pew racks, or you may give online at www.fbcsp.org. Congratulations to Our Graduates I hope you will take time to read through the “Graduation” insert in this issue of The Tie. This is a festive time of year for so many of our families as their children graduate from high school and college. I extend my joy to all of our gradu- ates and their families as they celebrate this significant achievement in their lives. I am, also, reminded that this is a bittersweet season. Graduation not only signifies a remarka- ble accomplishment but also the opening of a new chapter in our graduates’ lives. That involves significant transitions toward adulthood. The high school graduates, in many cases, will be moving away from home to begin the adventure of college. The college graduates face the adult tasks of finding a full-time vocation and a place to live. The parents, in either case, are adjusting to their new and changing roles with these young adults. All these transitions, although joyous, can be equally stressful, involving the first of many farewells that evoke a variety of emotions. So, our families not only need our grateful enthusiasm but our faithful prayers. May God give them insight and wisdom. God & Country Sunday Our annual God & Country Service will be held Sunday, July 7. Our own Rick Allenbaugh will be our guest preacher that day. Rick is a retired Colonel, having served in the intel- ligence division of the United States Army. We plan to have one worship service at 11:00 a.m. with light refreshments and devotional time for adults at 9:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Dress is casual. I hope you will be here to join in this celebration of faith and freedom. Summer Reading Summertime gives us opportunity for some leisurely reading. As you think about the novels or essays you would like to read this summer, I want to suggest a couple of books that I have found rich and rewarding to read. First on my list is David Brooks’ new book, The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life. Brooks is a gifted writer and is among a growing group of thinkers challenging our society to rethink the nature of the moral life and the importance of living a life of character. Another book I would suggest for our divided times is Richard Mouw’s Uncommon Decency: Christian Civility in an Uncivil World. Mouw is the President of Fuller Theological Seminary and Professor or Christian Philosophy. The book calls our attention to the Christian virtue of civility, wherein we learn to enter public dialogue, maintaining our Christian convic- tions while treating those with whom we may disagree with respect and honor.

2019 Pentecost Offering

This year, Pentecost Sunday is June 9, a day we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church, recorded in the Book of Acts. MOORE COUNTY MEN’S CONFERENCE The Village Chapel in Pinehurst — Saturday, June 8 — 1:30-3:30 PM Special Guest: Coach Tubby Smith, High Point University

Come and hear an American college basketball coach legend as Christian men of Moore County unite in Jesus Christ. Coach Smith has twenty-five winning seasons amassing over 615 wins, while serving as the head at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis, and High Point Universities.

This event is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are necessary. For more information, contact The Village Chapel at (910) 295-6003.

Take Advantage of the IRA-To-Charity Provision

Contributed by John R. Beith, CCA, CCBA, Treasurer

Taxpayers who are age 70 and one half or older (not just in the year you turn 70 and one half) are allowed to make tax-free distributions directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to the charity of their choice up to $100,000 per year. This permanent provision is found in Section 112 of the PATH Act of 2016 and is outlined on our website – www.fbcsp.org.

Since taxpayers age 70 and one half or older must withdraw annual required minimum distributions (RMDs) from their IRA, this is an excellent way to exclude these contributions/distributions from gross income, especially now that more individuals cannot itemize deductions on their tax returns.

Here is how this provision plays out on a personal tax return:

• the IRA distribution is excluded from income; • the distribution counts toward the taxpayer’s RMD for the year; and

• the distribution does NOT count as a charitable contribution.

At your convenience, if you have questions, concerns, or need additional information, please call (910) 692-8750 extension 234, or e-mail me at [email protected]. If you choose to make The First Baptist Church of Southern Pines the recipient of your contribution/distribution, please have your custodian, trustee, or fiduciary representative place your name somewhere on the check or check stub for identification purposes. Thank you.

FROM THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION

Your Time and Gifts Are Needed

The Enlistment Committee will soon begin securing volunteers who serve Christ in many capacities in our church. Please pray for the committee as they seek persons to continue the good work being done at First Baptist. Perhaps you've wondered about finding a place of service and aren't quite sure where to start. Perhaps the Spirit is nudging you! Let's talk! Give me a call, shoot me an e-mail, or stop by my office. We’ll chat about ways God can use you to serve in this place.

Coming in July

God and Country Sunday On Sunday, July 7, we will offer our thanks to God for the freedoms we enjoy in Christ and as citizens of our great country. Colonel Rick Allenbaugh, USA, Ret., will be our guest speaker. We’ll have one service at 11:00 a.m. Dress is casual. Adults will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 for donuts, coffee, and juice, followed by a devotion. Preschool-ers, children, and youth will go to their usual classes.

Coming in August

Christian Education Luncheon We're grateful to those who serve Christ at First Baptist by using their gifts to teach and lead preschoolers, children, youth and adults in Sunday school, small groups, and music and mis-sions. Others provide childcare during worship or Wednesday evenings, or volunteer in our Media Library. We want to honor and give thanks for the good work these volunteers do among us. On Sunday, August 18, at noon, we'll enjoy a time of food and fellowship. Door prizes await! Invitations will be extended later this summer. There is no cost for volunteers and their guests.

Coming in October

— Staff News — John Beith’s Retirement After 25 years of faithful service as our Church Treasurer (10 as a volunteer and 15 as an employee), John Beith has informed the Personnel Committee of his intention to retire January 31, 2020. We are so grateful to John for the integrity and confidentiality with which he has always performed his duties. He has been a dedicated member of our church staff, and we will miss his presence on staff. A search committee is being formed to seek a replacement for the position. We hope to have that person in place before the end of this year.

Kenyan Houses of Hope

As part of a church planting strategy by the Kenya Baptist Convention, houses are being built for families in need in Western Kenya. The recipients of the houses are determined by the village and village chief, working in conjunction with area pastors. Recipients are usually widows, women who have been abandoned by their husbands, or someone with a disability. Often these families are unable to keep their houses up to safe, sanitary standards. The cost of construction of a house—a simple African pole structure with a tin roof—is $400 (US), which includes materials and the help of a small team of Kenyan builders. At completion, the local Kenyan pastors begin Bible studies in the homes with the goal of starting a church.

“Houses of Hope” is our mission project in Children’s Ministry for the spring! Place your quarters in the collection bins around the church. Thank you!

Attention All VBS Workers Adults and Youth will meet on Sunday, July 7, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service to decorate your classrooms. Lunch will be provided.

Thank You to Our Children! Children’s Day of Worship was a reminder that all of God’s creation are intended to praise God through song, scripture, and instruments. Thanks to the children for leading every-one in the congregation to focus on God and glorify Him. Thanks also to the parents for your guidance with your child and assuring worship is the priority of your family.

NOTES

for SINGERS & SENIORS

Music Ministry

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. — Isaiah 40:26

A month ago, we learned some very exciting news from the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The Event Horizon telescope took a picture of something deep in outer space never seen before by the human eye—a black hole. I have been fascinated by astronomy since I was a boy, and I always wondered if the existence of a black hole would ever be proven. Einstein’s relativity theories postulated the possibility of black holes, but even he wondered if they might be just too strange to actually exist. On April 10, we got our first glimpse of this monstrosity. My mind immediately darted to a scene from the movie Interstellar, and, as it turns out, Hollywood’s depiction was fairly accurate. It is estimated that this black hole is 25 billion miles wide; roughly the size of our solar system. Enormous. Scientists think a black hole is formed when a star dies; as it dies, the star implodes. Take a moment, and imagine an object with a gravity so strong that nothing can escape its pull—not even light. The mind reels. God placed this one in the nearby Messier 87 galaxy. So, why does this matter? To me, this is yet another example of God’s limitless creativity. We didn’t know about this, but Isaiah reminds us that God knows all about His creation, and He likely even gave it a name. What other mysteries may be out there for us to someday discover? This reminds me of how big God is and how small we are. Yet, God cares for us and knows each of our lives in detail. A relationship with God is personal—as personal as you want it to be. With the enormity of the universe to tend to, God still has time to love us and consider our concerns. Yes, I feel a little bit small considering the size of the universe—but we are eternally valued, because God is an active part of our lives. Psalm 8:3-4 comes to mind: 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? (NIV)

These are exciting days to be alive. Each day is rich with the possibility of the discovery of something new—and yet another opportunity to witness God’s enormous creativity.

— Greg

Also blessed to stay at one of the girls' homes for a couple nights where I had visited before. God showed up Mightily! There were many salvations and some miracle healings. What a Glorious and humbling trip! Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for healing of my illness I picked up in Guyana. God miraculously healed me. We do serve The Miracle-Working God Who answers our prayers! All Glory be to Him! Love in Christ to All, Emily Edson

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical ministry that seeks to put God’s love into action by joining a community together to build safe, decent, and affordable housing for hard-working families. Locally, our independent affiliate has been building and repairing homes for over 30 years, totaling 267 families who have purchased homes with a 0% interest mort-gage and over 150 families who have received a critical home repair with a small repayment of material cost. Our model is based on partnership at all levels—from our local community supporters, to the volunteers who carry out the builds, to the families who each contribute 300 hours of sweat equity for the opportunity to build their home and purchase it with a guaran-teed affordable mortgage. This mortgage is then invested back into future homes, making it possible for the families to pay their opportunity forward to others.

Habitat enables those without access to traditional mort-gages the opportunity to build wealth for their family. Habitat is able to take this risk, because each family spends approxi-mately 18 months attending courses and building on the con-struction site before they purchase their home. It isn’t easy, but it is rewarding, and many homeowners find it is a starting point for future achievements as they are required to push beyond their comfort zone in many ways during their time with Habitat. Since building their homes, many Habitat homeowners have gone back to school or sent their children to

college or the military—often the first in their family to do so.

Southern Pines First Baptist Church has been a critical partner in this mission, contributing financially as well as volunteer-ing on the sites. Thank you for your commitment to our commu-nity and to humanity—you serve as a wonderful example of sharing our many gifts with our neighbors when we are able.
