From the President

Greetings from Doriann Stein, Daughters of the Nile Foundation President, and the Board of Directors!

Spring is an exciting time for the Foundation. It’s the time when the Foundation deliberates on the amount of the annual contribution to Shriners Hospitals for Children®. The Daughters of the Nile Foundation is proud to announce the (U.S) donation to Shriners Hospitals for 2018 is $1,765,510. This donation is made possible by the growth of our endowment fund, but more importantly from the hard work and fundraising efforts of members of Daughters of the Nile. Way to go ladies!

Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Northern California

Check Presentation

On Wednesday, February 6, in conjunction with Supreme Queen Shirley’s official visit to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Northern California, Board Director Muriel Knapp, together with the Supreme Queen, presented a check to the hospital in the amount of $48,111. This check allowed the hospital to purchase much-wanted items from their Imperial-approved capital items requests list – in particular, physical therapy gym equipment and a vein viewer that makes looking for veins for blood draws much easier. A large crowd, including staff members who would be using the equipment, was on hand for the hospital-provided luncheon where the check was presented. Tours followed the luncheon and Supreme Queen Shirley got to be the guinea pig for a demonstration of the vein viewer’s use.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Philadelphia Check Presentation

The Foundation Board of Directors realizes the need for a play space within the hospital environment that is accessible to children. When children are in the hospital, their usual routines are disrupted. Being able to play while in the hospital means that kids can be kids and continue an aspect of normal life experiences outside the hospital. Play promotes learning, relaxation, socialization, and overall growth and development. On Thursday, April 18th, Doriann Stein, Foundation President, was pleased to present a check on behalf of the Daughters of the Nile Foundation in the amount of $39,347 to Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Philadelphia to fund the renovations of their current playroom. The current playroom is over 20 years old and the goal of the renovation is to create a modern and fun play space for the children and their families, a play space that would be a non-clinical ‘safe zone.’ Thank you to all Daughters of Nile for making this possible!

Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Salt Lake City

Check Presentation

On February 25, the Daughters of the Nile Foundation represented by Kendy Cusick-Rindone, Treasurer, presented a check in the amount of $47,393 to purchase approved equipment for Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City®. The funds purchased an Alaris Pump Modules-15, Alaris syringes-3, and a Broken Screw Removal. The presentation was made during the Board of Governors’ February Meeting. Chairman of the Board of Governors, David Polner from El Zaribah Shriners, Phoenix, Arizona, accepted the contribution on behalf of the Board. Dr. Kristen L. Carroll, M.D., Chief of Staff, made the comment that the anesthesiologist would appreciate the pumps and syringes but, as an orthopedic surgeon, she was excited to receive the funds for the Broken Screw Remover. She said it was very necessary for her work with the children if a screw were to break. She was very thankful.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Greenville Check Presentation

Thanks to your generosity, the Daughters of the Nile Foundation, is “Making a Difference” at Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Greenville. Doriann Stein, Daughters of the Nile Foundation President, along with Supreme Queen Shirley A. Henley, presented a check in the amount of $74,535 to Ill. Sir Ron Mitchum, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Greenville and Paul Finelli, Director of Development, at the hospital on Thursday, March 14th. This appropriation provides funding for a set of Stryker System 8 Cordless Drivers which will be utilized during orthopedic surgeries to help patients heal more quickly and fully. Also, a portion of the check will be directed to underwrite the purchase of a GE UltraSound Machine. The UltraSound machine is a useful tool crucial in orthopedic surgery and is essential in the treatment and care of Cerebral Palsy. Paul Finelli explained “Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Greenville remains incredibly grateful to the Daughters of the Nile for their desire and willingness to commit these necessary resources to better the care for our patients.”

You may keep the amount of your gift confidential by redacting the amount on the document. Stepping Stone to Happiness—Crown Certificate The Daughters of the Nile Foundation is pleased to announce a new Stepping Stones to Happiness. The crown has long been associated with Daughters of the Nile, emblematic of royalty and leadership. For its historical place in our fraternal organization, the Daughters of the Nile Foundation Board has chosen a silver crown to decorate a new Stepping Stones to Happiness, which shall be known as the “Crown Stepping Stones to Happiness Certificate.” This new Crown Certificate, available for a $50 donation, can be ordered now through the donfdn.org website or through your Princess Recorder. With the debut of the Crown Certificate, the NOW In Honor Of and In Memory Of certificates have been retired and are no longer available. However, be sure to know that our original and traditional $25 Stepping Stones to Happiness Certificates, both In Honor and In Memory, are still very much available! Be among the first to acquire this new Crown Certificate for yourself or to give to someone else. Your donation, as always, supports our Shriners Hospitals for Children® through the Daughters of the Nile Foundation. Thank you in advance for your investment in this new Foundation offering. You will love it!

A Daughter of the Nile’s Privilege

When we think of our membership in Daughters of the Nile, so many sweet things

come to mind – friendships, fun social time, inspiration received from our

ritualistic work, leadership opportunities, and common purpose with like-minded

philanthropic women. But there is one more thing that we do that is more

important than all the rest and that is the opportunity to exercise the privilege of

sharing our wealth, to whatever degree that individually is, with deserving

children. Some people may not understand how it is that a Temple organizes itself

and functions, but nobody can fault what we collectively do – provide much-

needed funds for the benefit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children® and,

ultimately, the patients who are given outstanding medical care there. This is a

season of celebration, so we want to give you another occasion to give a donation

to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation by way of the donation envelope enclosed

with this newsletter. It is your choice to give a monetary gift in honor or in

memory of someone and to give it to either the Convalescent Endowment Fund or

to Holiday Sharing. Every dollar you contribute supports the Foundation’s

reputable cause. Please consider participating as a reflection of your feelings of

privilege to be a Daughter of the Nile. You are blessed, loved, and appreciated.
