MESSAGES FROM THE DEPUTYPRINCIPAL, YEAR 11 AND YEAR 12

Year 11 and 12 – AARA

Important news from QCAA regardingAARA (Access Arrangements andReasonable Adjustments)

The QCAA recognises that some studentsmay have disability impairment and/or

medical conditions, or experience other circumstances thatmay be a barrier to their performance in assessment. Accessarrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA) aredesigned to assist these students.

Eligibility for AARA

AARA are provided to minimise, as much as possible, barriersfor a student whose disability, impairment, medical condition orother circumstances may affect their ability to read, respond toor participate in assessment

These barriers fall into three broad categories:

The QCAA uses broad application categories for AARAeligibility:

The application of AARA to student assessment is based on thefunctional impact of the condition for which AARA are sought.

Flagstone State Community College supports any student whowill need an adjustment based on an existing condition. If youbelieve your student is eligible for an AARA, and is in Year11 or 12, please go to our website and search for the AARAdocument. Students and their families must complete themedical document (your doctor or specialist must complete),as well as the student statement. The school will complete theschool statement.

To fully complete the process, please follow the “Steps forAccess” section on page 2, which will also outline steps onceyou have completed the documents.

If your child has an incident (called Illness/misadventure) thatcauses the missing of an assessment, then they need to alsocomplete an AARA.

For more information, please contact Mrs Krause, HOD SeniorSchooling, or Mr Coleman (DP).

Year 10s

This is an exciting term for the Year 10s with the studentslearning about the requirements of the workplace and preparingfor their work experience requirements for a full week at the endof April. The paperwork was given to Year 10s earlier this termand parents have been securing placement for their studentswith companies they would like to work with. Thank you tothose who have already handed in their completed paperwork. For those yet to do so – please return your forms to the schoolno later than 23 March 2020.

Every Year 10 must go out to work experience for a week. Theidea is that they not only experience a week of work but also beable to have a taste of an industry that they think they might liketo work in after they finish school. After work experience, we willbe busy planning a Preparation for Senior Studies program inwhich Year 10s will be exploring study and career options forYears 11 and 12 and beyond.

Year 11s

It has been a great start for the Year 11s in 2020. Most studentschose their subjects wisely and are enjoying the new challengesthat the 2 years of the QCE brings. Those who have foundthe subjects not what they chose have come to see me andhave organised what changes we were able to make. Pleasebe aware that subject changes have now closed and studentsmust remain in the classes they have until after mid-yearreporting. Remember that every subject passed at a C or higherwill add a point to their QCE learning account so students needto strive early on to ensure they can gain success in their senioryears of schooling.

Every student needs to gain at least 20 points, with at leastone semester passed in English and Maths. 12 of the 20 pointsneed to be gained through subjects begun at the start of Year11 and finished at a C or higher at the end of Year 12, orthrough Certificate IIs to gain the core requirements of the QCE.In my conversations with students, I tell them to aim at over 26points, which will give them a little breathing room.

In Year 11 Future Pathway Options, students will be finishingthe BRAKE Driver Education program. When successfullycompleted, this program will bank them 1 QCE credit. In terms2, 3 and 4, students will be undertaking the Certificate II inSkills for Work and Vocational Pathways, which will give themanother 4 QCE credits. This means that students are workingtowards securing 5 extra QCE credits before the end of thisyear, outside of those they gain from their subjects.

Year 12s

In the last year of school, Year 12 students need to be able torely on their families, their teachers and their peers to help themwith the study load and leadership requirements. This year willfly by for students and parents and before you know it, theywill be graduating and looking towards their next goals. Weall need to remain focused on what outcomes each studentis looking to gain when they leave school. An increased effortfrom students towards their Year 12 studies is noticeable andwill reap rewards. There are many support options at Flagstoneand it is important to access them early. Many teachers assiststudents by offering tutoring to students in the library after

school and mentoring to students on the best way to achievein their subjects. Students also have access to the GuidanceOfficer, Youth Workers, the Chaplin, the school based nurseand police officer and the Industry Liaison Officer can help withemployment options. As Senior Schooling HOD, my role is totrack and monitor the progress of every Year 12 and to liaisewith students and their parents about programs that we can putinto place to ensure student success.

All students need to commit to every lesson through 100%attendance. Past history year after year shows that the highestachievers attended every lesson and did an average minimumof five hours home-work/study per day every day. Highachievers do NOT miss lessons to study. Study is always inaddition to lessons!! To do otherwise indicates very poortime-management and a poor use of resources.

Year 12 is a marathon and as such, students need to maintain ahealthy lifestyle and work life balance. Part time jobs should bein addition to studies but not at the expense of study or sleeptime. Parents, please praise your student often for their efforts.

Whether your student is studying to gain entry into a universitycourse or working at a school based apprenticeship ortraineeship or working to gain their QCE, we need to worktogether as a team to ensure success for every student, everyday.

Every Year 12 student has been given a card that will allowthem access to their My QCE learning account. This card willhave their student number and password and once they log on– will allow ever student and their parents to see a QCE planner.

Finally, we are again looking at running two outside coursesfor Year 12s this year. Over the last few years, we have beenworking with a company to bring in a Certificate II inWarehousing and Logistics and a Certificate II in Allied Healthto students in this school. Both of these courses offer 4 QCEPoints and both have great employment outcomes post Year12. Places are limited, so if your student would like to takeadvantage of these free courses, tell them to see Mrs Krause orMs Jones to check their eligibility.

Building Independence and Resilience

“The hardest walk you can make, is the walk you make alone, but that is the walk that makes you the most strongest.”

Our school community is built upon supporting each other, working as one and rising to meet the challenges in our everevolving world. However, walking alone and away from thecrowd can develop the resilience and personal growth that ouryoung people need for their future.

We all want to join in on the Mexican wave at a sports stadium,we want to be involved and be part of the crowd, but whatabout if that crowd was then to turn and hurt someoneunexpectedly or witness harm to another? It is understandablethat at times we do not say ‘no’ or ‘stop it’ for fear ofrepercussions, but if the leader of the ‘mob’ has no ‘mob’the feeling of power, of being right, or being forced into aconfronting situation when really it was only going to be aconversation can disappear.

As members of the school community, parents, and supportersof our students, it is important that we stress the power ofwalking away or even more so, not following the crowd.Teaching our youth the strength of being an individual and thepower that comes with that, not necessarily now but later in life(even if they cannot see it yet).

Here are some strategies to help develop the skills of buildingindependence and resilience:

POPSTARS THE 90’S MUSICAL LEADCAST ANNOUNCEMENT

1. Be disciplined. Most leaders are people of impulse, and most passionate people live by feelings. Butthose who understand, learn and practice disciplinecan channel those impulses into something ofsubstance rather than following the crowd.

2. Know yourself. Get feedback from others and learnas much as you can about how you come across. Then you can accurately target how you appear in acrowd and what you need to work on.

3. Be conscious. Showing up consciously meansalways being on time, honouring your commitments, and being prepared. It is also being conscious of theactions of others. Why are they moving in thisdirection or doing the things they do?

4. Be confident. When you truly believe you can createwhat you envision, when you're not afraid of theobstacles, that confidence will automatically makeyou stand out from the rest.

5. Practice listening. Learn to listen truly listen, to worktoward a deep understanding and hear what's beingsaid beyond the words. You will stand out in anysituation or have a greater understanding of asituation if you actively listen.

6. Cultivate emotional intelligence. Too manyotherwise smart people don't know how to managetheir emotions or relate to others well. Emotionalintelligence attracts people who are looking toconnect with someone who has their act togetherand who's competent and capable.

7. Know your motives. Why do you do what you do?How well do you know your purpose, your why?Knowing your motivation helps you keep going andmakes you easy for others to relate to.

8. Take yourself seriously. Being an entrepreneur, leader, or businessperson requires that you becomea master at your craft. It means being competent atthe things you do, constantly honing and developingyour skills in every way possible. When you takeyourself seriously, so do others.

9. Always be of service. Being useful, being helpful isan important aspect of making a great impression.Show up with a spirit of empathy and something togive. An attitude of service makes people interestedin what you have to offer.

10. Be kind to everyone. Lots of people are only nice tothose who can do something for them. Stand out bytreating everyone as important and interesting.

11. Be prepared. When an opportunity turns up, theperson who is ready and able to be part of whateverneeds to happen will always stand out.

12. Be a master collaborator. Be a great team player.Make others look good and sound good.

13. Be inspirational. A passion for life attracts others toyou. To stand out and inspire others, you first mustbe inspirational.

Trouble shooting tips

Windows Updates - It is important for Windows to be keptup-to-date as this is the main reason behind students havingdifficulties connecting to our network. In the search toolbar ontheir computer, students can type “updates” - this will give themthe ability to check for updates and install as required.

Forgot to charge your laptop? We have a secure chargingstation at school in ST13 that students can use. Students willneed to bring their power supply and their laptop to ST13 whereour technicians will show them how to use the charging station.Students can then borrow a school device for 1-2 periodswhilst their laptop charges.

Laptop Lockers – lockers are available in ST block fortemporary storage of devices during practical lessons andlunch times. Students will provide their own locks and mustremove them at the end of the day. Any locks left on thetemporary lockers may be cut off by the school.

FORMULA STUDENT RACE CAR UPDATEOnce again the student Formula car build isunderway for the Year 12 class. This year’sgroup is far ahead of previous years and isproducing a more consistent product. Thechassis was completed before the end oflast year and has only been awaiting finalclean up and painting. We have nowentered the build stage after stripping all the

required components from last year’s car in preparation for theiruse in the new car. As soon as the students finish making thelast few components we will be able to set up a semi-rollingchassis.

This year the students will also have to learn about fibreglasswork as we need to do some body shell repair. Last yearthe shell was damaged on the front corner as it was beingtowed from the track after experiencing a broken throttle cable. This may also create the opportunity to repaint the body shelland get Flagstone a bit closer to the best presented teams.Several of them have professionally finished paint jobs done bysponsors in their towns and suburbs.
