Verbis ST RITA’S COLLEGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Mrs Dale Morrow 15 OCTOBER 2020, TERM 4, EDITION 15 2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE 2020 YEAR OF HOPE - A LIGHT TO OUR PATH Dear Parents and Carers It was with great enthusiasm that we commenced Term 4 with a whole school Assembly on Tuesday of last week. During this first Assembly we recognised the results and achievements of many of our sporng teams and there was promoon of our upcoming ‘Colour Days’ which have become great opportunies for all girls to parcipate in fun acvies outside the normal roune of school. There was also advanced noficaon given to the girls about next year’s musical which will be The Wizard of OZ. I know we have many talented girls in our community, and I am looking forward to seeing many of them perform in this musical in 2021. As is typical of our vibrant College, we saw the girls and staff ‘dressing up’ last week and using this fun acvity to encourage us to look beyond ourselves and recognise that our bonds as a community are so important for our wellbeing. The first three weeks of this Term will be the final weeks of secondary schooling for our Senior Class of 2020. They will then be sing the QCAA external examinaons for their various subjects. They will be the first St Rita’s group to sit these exams and we are confident that both they, with their teachers, have prepared well for them. I will have more to say about this wonderful group of leaders in a future Verbis, suffice to say at this stage that they are all to be commended for their student leadership during this extraordinary year. I wanted to make menon of the very recent publicaon of Pope Francis’ latest encyclical, “Fratelli Tu”. This is the third encyclical of Pope Francis who, as you know, was elected to the papacy in March of 2013. His inspiraon for taking the Papal name of Francis was because he wanted to emphasise and pursue the cause of placing the needs of the poor, marginalised and disenfranchised at the centre of his ministry. It occurred to Pope Francis when he began wring this encyclical during the first outbreak of the coronavirus at the start of this year, that we are all in need of taking stock and looking to the example of St Francis of Assisi who “wherever he went… sowed the seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters”. As we have seen this pandemic unfold the Pope points out that it is teaching us very clearly that “... no one is saved alone; we can only be saved together”, and that the coronavirus is presenng the world with an opportunity for real systemic change – Francis suggests that to believe we can carry on as before is “denying reality”. On a first reading of the document I found it to be very inspiring and challenging. It focuses on describing how fraternity and social friendship are the only ways to build a beer, more just and peaceful world. If we are to take anything posive from what we are experiencing with this pandemic then surely it must be re-visioning what is important in shaping a beer world – a world in which sociees uphold the principle that “no one can face life in isolaon”. The Pope is urging us to band together with others across naonal, polical and social divides so that we can “dream… as a single human family” to build a more just and socially united world. I would encourage you to take the me to read this inspiraonal papal document for it offers a uniquely Chrisan response to the challenges posed by the pandemic. The following excerpt from Independent Catholic News provides a good summary of the document: “The Encyclical aims to promote a universal aspiraon toward fraternity and social friendship. Beginning with our common membership in the human family, from the acknowledgement that we are brothers and sisters because we are the children of one Creator, all in the same boat, and hence we need to be aware that in a globalized and interconnected world, only together can we be saved. The Document on Human Fraternity signed by Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in February 2019 is an inspiraonal influence cited many mes. Fraternity is to be encouraged not only in words, but in deeds. Deeds made tangible in a “beer kind of polics”, which is not subordinated to financial interests, but to serving the common good, able to place the dignity of every human being at the centre and assure work to everyone, so that each one can develop his or her own abilies. A polics which, removed from populism, is able to find soluons to what aacks fundamental human rights and which aims to definively eliminate hunger and trafficking. At the same me, Pope Francis underscores that a more just world is achieved by promong peace, which is not merely the absence of war; it demands “craſtsmanship”, a job that involves everyone. Linked to truth, peace and reconciliaon must be “proacve”; they must work toward jusce through dialogue, in the name of mutual development. This begets the Ponff’s condemnaon of war, the “negaon of all rights” and is no longer conceivable even in a hypothecally “jusfied” form, because nuclear, chemical and biological weapons already have enormous repercussions on innocent civilians. There is also a strong rejecon of the death penalty, defined as “inadmissible”, and a central reflecon on forgiveness, connected to the concepts of remembrance and jusce: to forgive does not mean to forget, the Ponff writes, nor to give up defending one’s rights to safeguard one’s dignity, which is a giſt from God. In the background of the Encyclical is the COVID-19 pandemic which, Francis reveals, “unexpectedly erupted” as he “was wring this leer”. But the global health emergency has helped demonstrate that “no one can face life in isolaon” and that the me has truly come to “dream, then, as a single human family” in which we are “brothers and sisters all” (7-8). 2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE2020 YEAR OF HOPE - A LIGHT TO OUR PATH

    Dear Parents and Carers

It was with great enthusiasm that we commenced Term 4 with a whole school Assembly on Tuesday of last week. During this first Assembly we recognised the results and achievements of many of our sporting teams and there was promotion of our upcoming ‘Colour Days’ which have become great opportunities for all girls to participate in fun activities outside the normal

routine of school. There was also advanced notification given to the girls about next year’s musical which will be The Wizard of OZ. I know we have many talented girls in our community, and I am looking forward to seeing many of them perform in this musical in 2021. As is typical of our vibrant College, we saw the girls and staff ‘dressing up’ last week and using this fun activity to encourage us to look beyond ourselves and recognise that our bonds as a community are so important for our wellbeing.

The first three weeks of this Term will be the final weeks of secondary schooling for our Senior Class of 2020. They will then be sitting the QCAA external examinations for their various subjects. They will be the first St Rita’s group to sit these exams and we are confident that both they, with their teachers, have prepared well for them. I will have more to say about this wonderful group of leaders in a future Verbis, suffice to say at this stage that they are all to be commended for their student leadership during this extraordinary year.

I wanted to make mention of the very recent publication of Pope Francis’ latest encyclical, “Fratelli Tutti”. This is the third encyclical of Pope Francis who, as you know, was elected to the papacy in March of 2013. His inspiration for taking the Papal name of Francis was because he wanted to emphasise and pursue the cause of placing the needs of the poor, marginalised and disenfranchised at the centre of his ministry. It occurred to Pope Francis when he began writing this encyclical during the first outbreak of the coronavirus at the start of this year, that we are all in need of taking stock and looking to the example of St Francis of Assisi who “wherever he went… sowed the seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters”. As we have seen this pandemic unfold the Pope points out that it is teaching us very clearly that “... no one is saved alone; we can only be saved together”, and that the coronavirus is presenting the world with an opportunity for real systemic change – Francis suggests that to believe we can carry on as before is “denying reality”.

On a first reading of the document I found it to be very inspiring and challenging. It focuses on describing how fraternity and social friendship are the only ways to build a better, more just and peaceful world. If we are to take anything positive from what we are experiencing with this pandemic then surely it must be re-visioning

what is important in shaping a better world – a world in which societies uphold the principle that “no one can face life in isolation”. The Pope is urging us to band together with others across national, political and social divides so that we can “dream… as a single human family” to build a more just and socially united world. I would encourage you to take the time to read this inspirational papal document for it offers a uniquely Christian response to the challenges posed by the pandemic. The following excerpt from Independent Catholic News provides a good summary of the document:

“The Encyclical aims to promote a universal aspiration toward fraternity and social friendship. Beginning with our common membership in the human family, from the acknowledgement that we are brothers and sisters because we are the children of one Creator, all in the same boat, and hence we need to be aware that in a globalized and interconnected world, only together can we be saved. The Document on Human Fraternity signed by Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in February 2019 is an inspirational influence cited many times.

Fraternity is to be encouraged not only in words, but in deeds. Deeds made tangible in a “better kind of politics”, which is not subordinated to financial interests, but to serving the common good, able to place the dignity of every human being at the centre and assure work to everyone, so that each one can develop his or her own abilities. A politics which, removed from populism, is able to find solutions to what attacks fundamental human rights and which aims to definitively eliminate hunger and trafficking. At the same time, Pope Francis underscores that a more just world is achieved by promoting peace, which is not merely the absence of war; it demands “craftsmanship”, a job that involves everyone. Linked to truth, peace and reconciliation must be “proactive”; they must work toward justice through dialogue, in the name of mutual development. This begets the Pontiff’s condemnation of war, the “negation of all rights” and is no longer conceivable even in a hypothetically “justified” form, because nuclear, chemical and biological weapons already have enormous repercussions on innocent civilians. In the background of the Encyclical is the COVID-19 pandemic which, Francis reveals, “unexpectedly erupted” as he “was writing this letter”. But the global health emergency has helped demonstrate that “no one can face life in isolation” and that the time has truly come to “dream, then, as a single human family” in which we are “brothers and sisters all” (7-8).

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENTSMs Catherine Allen

It’s hard to believe that we are enjoying our last few weeks of sharing the campus with the Year 12 students before they commence their External Assessment. I would like to congratulate them for their support of House and Captains’ initiatives; Rosa, Hogan and Collins rescheduled their days successfully and the Captains’ Spirit week started the Term off positively and with fun. COVID-19 has not stolen Hope or effort at St Rita’s. Let’s hope that this final Term of 2020 is one that allows us all to work hard and achieve our best.

Please click here for some information regarding Schoolies.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDIESMrs Maree TrimsYear 11 and 12 External ExamsOn Monday 26 October our Year 12 students commence their external exams. We also have students of three Year 11 subjects undertaking their external exam. Students have been well-prepared with tutorials and practice exams. Parents and students are reminded that if a student is too unwell to sit the external exam, they must obtain a medical certificate for the day of the exam and contact Mrs George immediately.

Year 11 End of Unit 2 assessmentYear 11 students and parents will receive a statement of Unit 2 results next week. The purpose of this statement to inform parents and students of how students are traveling in their senior subjects. Students who have received an Unsatisfactory for a subject may consider changing subjects as this is the final point in time when subject changes may take place. Parents will receive a full report at the end of Semester 2 with the same Unit 2 results, but it will contain their House Group comment and Cocurricular commitments as well.

Subject SelectionsYear 11 2021 students have been advised of their Subject Selection outcomes.Work on Year 9 2021 Subject Selections continues. Timetabling is a complicated process and I apologise for the delay. I would hope to have selections resolved and the students advised within the fortnight and most definitely before the closing date for Workbook and Stationery orders.

Changes to Subject SelectionsIn the coming weeks many students will have chosen subjects for 2021. However, if a student changes their mind about the subject they have chosen, they must complete a Change of Web Preferences Form. This form is located on MySRC on the Parents Homepage under Curriculum in Online Forms. Students must complete this form and submit it to Mrs Sax-Wood. These changes to preferences will not be processed until the timetable is completed towards the end of November. Students will then be notified via email if their subject change has been possible. As the timetable is still under construction, students will be notified of their elective subjects early in Term 4.

Year 8 2021 Subject Selection ProcessThis Saturday, 17 October, Year 7 students will receive their subject selection email from 7:00am. They required to choose one Language and one Arts subject to study for all of Year 8. It is important to review the processes that need to be followed in lodging a student’s preferences as explained on the video on MySRC. All language classes and some arts classes have enrolment limits. Therefore, students are encouraged to lodge their preferences early on the Saturday 17 October if they are very keen to study a particular arts or language subject. Students are encouraged to think carefully about their reserve subject as they may need to be allocated this elective if their first preference subject is full. Please note the following important dates.

2018 YEAR OF COURAGE - LEADING WITH COURAGE2020 YEAR OF HOPE - A LIGHT TO OUR PATH

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - MISSIONMrs Erica Qureshi

At the end of Term 3, our Year 7 students were involved in their first St Rita’s Retreat and in latter weeks, our Year 12 students will participate in their final St Rita’s Retreat.

The concept of Retreat, of going aside from the busyness of life, in order to think and pray about our lives, is very ancient. Human beings seem always to have known, intuitively, that sometimes we need to stop and that these times of stopping actually make our lives richer, renew our energy and help us to be clearer about what’s important in our lives.

Jesus had that consciousness, too. In John’s Gospel we read:

The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in a boat to a deserted place by themselves. (6: 30-32)

Our hope is that our students continue to realise the importance – both through their teenage years and as they graduate from secondary education – of stepping back from their busy lives for prayer, reflection and renewal.

This Term, I ask our community to pray in particular for our Year 12 cohort, as they navigate options after school, final assessments and the exciting changes that finishing one life stage and moving to another inevitably brings.

VALEThe College community is asked to keep the family of Past Student and former Presentation Sister, Marlene Watson (née Lawrence and Sr Mary Euphrasia) in their prayers.

Marlene was born at Pomona and won a scholarship to St Rita’s in the 1940s. She spoke very fondly of her time as a student at the College and became a Presentation Sister on leaving school before deciding to leave the Order and become a teacher - a career which she was devoted to her whole life. Marlene was very proud of her Aboriginal heritage and worked closely with Indigenous children in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory in particular.

Marlene passed away on 5 October after a very short illness at the age of 83 and her funeral was held on Tuesday of this week.

May she rest eternally in God’s loving peace.

Please update Parent and Emergency Contact DetailsALL parents/carers are asked to check their home and/or work email address/es and telephone number/s in BOTH Synergetic and Operoo and make updates if required. At the same time, parents/carers are asked to also check and update emergency contact person details.

The College is finding many differences between parent emails registered in the two platforms. It is important that all parents log in to both platforms, check their details and ensure mobile numbers and emails are current and the same between both platforms.

    • MySRC: Use the ‘Update Details’ button on the brown ribbon at the top of the page in MySRC to make any changes in MySRC.

    • Operoo: Only the parent can make changes in Operoo. Please log in to Operoo from MySRC and check that your email and contact details are the same as in MySRC. This is important so that information from Operoo can sync with the College database. The Primary Contact email and mobile must be entered. You are also requested to ensure the Secondary email and mobile is also entered, even though the system states that this is optional. This person must be the student’s Secondary Contact- e.g. Father or Mother – NOT an emergency contact.

    • Emergency Contact in MySRC: The College will always contact a parent in the first instance in the event of an illness or accident with their daughter. The emergency contact person in MySRC is not to be the student’s parent, but should be someone the College can easily make contact with in the event we cannot quickly get hold of either parent. If a parent/carer or emergency contact needs to be contacted urgently due to illness or accident with their daughter, telephone is used.

Students and Staff who are Unwell Students and staff who are unwell are to remain at home. The College’s Zero tolerance of any Flu-like symptoms remains in place, as does the management process of students and staff who present at school with Flu-like symptoms. Students who present with illness will be assessed by a College First-Aid officer and parents/carers contacted for immediate collection of their daughter if it is deemed your daughter should not be at school.

Students do not have permission to independently telephone their parents and ask to be taken home if they feel unwell. Students are to adhere to the College early departure procedures – present to Student Services and Mrs Timcke will contact parents/carers if a departure is necessary.

Parents/Visitors coming on to CampusThe College is maintaining the decision to cancel all non-essential on-campus parent and student activity. CaSSSA sport remains closed to spectators, including parents or any family members.

To enable the College to comply with COVID safety measure for Contract Tracing requirements, we respectfully ask parents and visitors coming onto campus to continue to arrive to College Main Reception at the Nagle Building (not Student Services) and Sign In and Sign Out. This procedure is a government directive and is necessary regardless of the purpose or length of your visit, even if you are dropping off an essential item to your daughter.

Volunteer Parents and Family MembersFamilies are advised that from 2021 it will be mandatory for all parents of the College to submit the College Volunteer Declaration, which is currently in ad hoc use. Our volunteer parents, family members and friends give generously of their time to so many aspects of College life – P&F, Music, Sport, Carnival, Mission, House, Year Level and Alumnae events and projects, among many other aspects. The declaration is a quick online form which provides the College with the Blue Card status of volunteers and will also be required to be submitted by non-student family members, friends or colleagues volunteering at events. For ease of administration, all parents will be requested to submit the declaration, regardless of whether it is their intention – known or not – to volunteer. The request will be issued early in Term 1 and will be reissued on an annual basis.

MUSIC NEWSMr Craig KennedyGood start for Term 4As we commenced rehearsals in Week 1 with our new ensembles, it was great to see the progression of students moving through from the junior ensembles into some of the senior ensembles. While for many this step up will initially be challenging, these opportunities will also see their individual development progress rapidly. It is always helpful when we surround ourselves with people that are going to lift us higher and by playing in ensembles with students who are stronger or more experienced players, these younger students will be encouraged and supported to lift the level of their playing and progress to levels they may not currently think possible. Only by being challenged do we continue to improve and develop our skills. That is what education is all about and music is one avenue that provides a never-ending pathway for improvement and in turn, satisfaction. I would encourage all of our students to continue to persevere and work through any challenges that are thrown their way as they always look for ways to improve.

I would also like to congratulate our incoming Music captains, Annie Dougherty (Vocal Music Captain) and Ella Hicks (Instrumental Music Captain). I have every faith that both of these girls will continue to lead the music department to greater heights and will be well supported by all of the senior music students.

AHEP and SHEPOver the September holidays, twelve of our most advanced students attended the State Honours Ensemble Program and the Australian Honours Ensemble Program at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. With more than 2000 students auditioning for places in each program, our students spent four days being immersed in extensive rehearsals to produce performances of a very high standard in the Conservatorium Theatre. This type of experience not only develops the students attending but also upon their return to College ensembles other students gain the benefit of playing beside these advanced students. Of particular note was the attendance of four of our students who played in ensembles as part of AHEP. The level of musicianship in these ensembles was extremely high and it was great to see our students being accepted into this program.

Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) has developed a toolkit website to assist parents and schools with the transition of students into both primary and secondary schooling, which can be very daunting for some. The Federal Education Minister, Dan Tehan, recently launched the new website.

The site is very informative and helpful in the information it provides for parents in engaging with their children’s education and complements the resources provided to parents by SchoolTV. The site also includes some case studies.

    Access the Site Here

No-one needs to be told that we live in unprecedented times. It is hard to escape the news these days. Throughout the year school communities across Australia have found themselves negotiating an undefined and uncontained crisis. Student learning in 2020 has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 disruptions with lingering threat of restrictions and lockdowns. This not only impacts student learning but affects social interactions, sense of belonging and simply put ‘’hanging out with peers’’ within school communities.

I am sure we all agree that children learn more effectively with parents and schools working in partnership and perhaps this was tested somewhat through the College’s ’Learning at Home’ program during Queensland lockdowns earlier this year. Adoption of ‘Learning at Home’ programs and other on-line learning platforms have highlighted more than ever the importance of ‘Parent Engagement’ in their children’s learning. In my brief overview of the “Gearing Up for Parent Engagement in Student Learning’’ website, I found it to be educational, informative and communicative.

The P&F Committee fully supports this great toolkit which will undoubtedly be a ‘value add’ to the current resources available at the College.

ROSA COLOUR DAYNaomi Nott and Alicia Miles - Rosa House CaptainsOn Tuesday 6 October, Rosa House commenced Term 4 with a bang by covering the school in orange and releasing St Rita’s first ever Staff Talent showcase! To raise awareness for our House wellbeing message - Bullying No Way - and our House ministry Orange Sky, Rosa organised ‘Staff’s Got Talent’ a spectacular video showing off the secret talents of College staff ranging from stand-up comedy, to acapella, to an exhilarating battle of the sexes.

The girls laughed and applauded a short preview of the performances on the morning’s Assembly, and as we spoke about the purpose of our Colour Day and ‘Staff’s Got Talent’, we were proud to see girls of all Houses wearing orange accessories in celebration and support.

Of course, another important part of Rosa’s Colour Day is to celebrate our amazing House pride and orange vibrancy- and how better to celebrate than with a sweet orange treat? Rosa girls came together to enjoy orange frosted cupcakes, which was made even sweeter in combination with the fun trivia organised by the College Captains on Hogan Place. Far from the wonderful day fizzling out, we decided to extend the celebrations by running our successful ‘guess the jellybean’ competition for the remainder of the week to raise money and awareness for Orange Sky’s mission to provide dignity to people doing it tough on the streets.

Colour Day was a huge success, and we are beyond proud and grateful for the participation, effort and spirit of everyone involved in making the day such a blast.

Swimming has commenced for Term 4 2020. With the start of the Water Polo season and the CaSSSA Swim season just on the horizon we have seen a return of many swimmers already this Term. The team at the pool is already gearing up for what promises to be a fantastic summer of swimming, with high goals and expectations for the CaSSSA season.

With the sudden increase in swimmer numbers it is time for a few friendly reminders:

    • Squad Training times: Junior Squads Monday – Thursday – 3:30pm – 4:30pm State Squad Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday (Including dryland component) – 6:00am – 7:30am Monday – Thursday – 4:30pm – 6:00pm National Squad Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday – 6:00am – 8:00am Monday – Thursday – 4:15pm – 6:30pm

    • Squad training times listed are the start times for each session, not the arrival time. Please arrive early so you are ready and prepared to swim on time. The team of coaches and most other swimmers all have the ability to show up ready and on time. The expectation is that all swimmers will be able to do the same.

    • Training during Terms 4 and 1 are open to all St Rita’s students – fees are only to be paid during Terms 2/3. • The pool area is closed to all non-swimmers due to COVID. Parents are to remain outside the school grounds. Non-Swimming students are not permitted inside the
