On Sunday 11 October, a mass and lunch was held in celebration of Br Jordan Redden's FMS 70th anniversary as a Marist Brother and last Saturday, 17 October, a requiem mass was held at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in celebration of the entry into eternal life of Dr Lawrence Smart AM. Both Brother 'Jordo' (SHOC 1940-41) ) and 'Lawrie' (SHOC 1941-45) were classmates of Emeritus Archbishop Leonard Faulkner (SHOC 1940-41) who was also present at these celebrations. Br Jordan and Dr Smart played very significant, yet obviously different roles across the last 70 years in the life of Sacred Heart College. Both were imbued with the Marist spirit whilst at Sacred Heart and whilst one became a Marist Brother, the other became an orthodontist. Both were very involved in family life - both their own and that of the broader Sacred Heart 'family'. Both the Redden and Smart families are recognised as having strong bonds with the College with numerous members of their family attending over the past several decades. Both also maintained a close friendship with Archbishop Faulkner. At critical and financially challenging moments Dr Smart's business acumen and that of his fellow committee members, including the first College Council in 1971, ensured the College remained viable during very trying times. This brief snapshot is worthy of reflection by the Class of 2015 who conclude classes this week. Sacred Heart is blessed with a rich tradition built on the relationships forged by its students and families who share a set of key Christian values inspired by the Marist charism. In particular, the strong family spirit as inspired by Mary, mother of Jesus, has been a constant since the founding of the College in 1987. The Class of 2015 continues to exude these strong bonds of friendship and mutual support and we wish them well as they embark upon their final examinations and assessments and post school life. Perhaps inspired by the contributions of Br Jordan and Dr Smart and their shared love of work and Christian spirit, the students can work themselves through some of the challenges which lie ahead and make a significant contribution to their families and the lives of others. Whilst one could dismiss a sense of connection between Br Jordan, Dr Smart and the Class of 2015 as being rather tenuous, the gathering of the Redden family and the Smart family and extended friends and relatives, and the connections to Sacred Heart are a firm example of the Catholic, Marist spirit which permeates our community. A tradition which we hope the Class of 2015 will continue into their future lives! Kind regards Steve Byrne Principal

SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, In recent weeks there have been two significant events which reflect some of the key characteristics of Sacred Heart College. MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of the Middle School I trust you had a relaxing break and got the chance to spend some quality time with your family.

Term 4 is always a very hectic time in the life of a school as we move into warmer weather and start to wind up the academic year. I would encourage the boys to continue to maintain the high standards they have set all year.

Last week we held a very successful Sports Day at SANTOS Stadium. Despite the warm weather, the students are to be congratulated for their outstanding behaviour and commitment to every aspect of the day. I would like to acknowledge the work of Mr Ashley Jenner and The Be Active Team for their thorough planning, preparation and organisation of the day. I would like to also thank all the staff for the smooth running of the events along with the parents and carers who came along to support - it was a truly an amazing community event. Well done to the Joseph team who took out the overall shield. Click here to visit a gallery of photos from Sports Day

Last Friday evening the annual Year 9 Social was held at Marymount College. It was a terrific evening and again I congratulate our boys for their fine behaviour during the evening. They should also be complemented on their dress attire - they presented as fine young men. Thanks to Mr Chris Ottens, Ms Kate Fallon and the Year 9 team for their work in preparing and supervising the evening. Click here to visit a gallery of photos from the Year 9 Social

Planning for 2016 is well underway. Currently we are interviewing staff for various leadership positions at the school, in particular Year Level Leaders of wellbeing and curriculum. The discernment process has been complicated and difficult due to the quality and number of applicants. I will publish the new team in the next newsletter so that you can become aware of the “go to” people for your son next year. As mentioned last year, in 2016 we welcome two new staff members, Tamara Smith from Mercedes College and Marcus Trimboli from Blackfriars Priory College - both Tamara and Marcus come highly recommended with a vast amount of teaching experience.

Have a great week. Tim Mullin Head of the Middle School

Liturgy for the Faithfully Departed 2 November 2015 in the Middle School Chapel November is the time when the Church is dedicated to remember our loved ones who have left us physically but still live in our minds, thoughts and hearts. Families, friends, students and staff are welcome to send me the names of their parent(s), relatives and friends who have gone to God and for whom they want to pray and remember. Thank you, to all who have given me names of their loved ones. If anyone wishes to include loved ones in the liturgy service, please give me their names before the 30 October. God Bless you Sister Jimsy CP

Year 9 Social Last Friday, 16 October, Year 9 students from SHC Middle School and Marymount College came together for one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year, the Year 9 Social! Click here to view a gallery of photos from the evening. This year’s theme was Hollywood, the Student Leaders and Marymount social committee worked tirelessly to transform Marymount’s Polding Hall into something fit for the stars of Hollywood. Upon arrival, it was obvious that students had stepped up to the plate, with an array of sharply dressed gentleman and glamorous young ladies. The night was filled with excitement, friendly conversation and even a bit of dancing. The evening wrapped up at 10:30 pm, with a group of young people who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to other gatherings as they prepare for their transition into life at the Senior School. Chris Ottens and Kate Fallon Year Level Leaders

Transport and Road Safety Over the past year Sacred Heart College Middle school has been working in partnership with the Marion Council, Transfield buses, and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) to address the transport needs of our school. To further assist the school in this endeavour we have adopted the Way2Go program. Way2Go is a statewide holistic program geared to promoting safer, greener and more active travel for primary school students and their communities which:

promotes the development of safe, people friendly local streets near schools to support independent student travel

encourages children and the community to safely walk, ride bikes or scooters, and use public transport for school travel

supports students to be safe walkers, bike riders and passengers

relies on sound evidence and models of leading practice for decision making, planning and classroom teaching To assist in the future planning of the transport and road safety needs we are conducting a number of surveys amongst students, parents and school staff. Parents should have received a survey link through a text message. If you have not filled in this survey can you please do so through this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JDDWF29

A link to the survey is also available on the Way2Go website: http://www.dpti.sa.gov.au/way2go/collecting_evidence

Student and staff surveys will be conducted shortly. Such surveys will assist in gathering data that will enable the future planning and implementation of travel and road safety initiatives that will meet the needs of our school community. Joe Millemaci Director of Students

How to get a Good Night’s Sleep There is no question that good sleep hygiene is important. Much research shows us that improved sleep makes for a happier, healthier, more successful and safer person. But, good sleep hygiene involves behaviour change — for some a little and for others a lot.

So, with this in mind, how do you help your teenager develop and maintain good sleep habits?

Here are some tips:

Sorry parents/carers, but there is no way around this. Model good sleep practises yourself.

Talk to your child about the importance of good sleep, helping them to understand how it may be impacting things that matter to them (for some this might be grades, for others it might be mood swings and friendships, for others it might be sports).

Establish a routine just as one would approach other habits of good hygiene (dental, grooming, etc.). “Habit” is an important concept and the more we can develop good “habits” around routine things, the less difficult such behaviours become and the healthier we are.

Consider developing a sleep diary or log. This helps to reveal negative patterns that may otherwise have gone unnoticed. It can also serve as a point of comparison, or baseline, if you embark on a plan to improve sleep hygiene.

Agree upon a contract with your teenager that connects a change in behaviour to a reward e.g. Sticking to a set bedtime and wake time for 10 days could result in a movie ticket.

Here are some simple tips that help to get a good nights’ sleep.

Avoid caffeine or high sugar drinks late in the day.

Get out into the bright light during the day but avoid bright light in the evening.

Avoid intense exercise in the evening.

Incorporate a “wind-down routine” that could include deep breathing, gentle music, smiling mind app.

Have a comfortable sleep setting.ie dark, quiet, comfortable room temperature.

Maintain a consistent bedtime and wake- time

Avoid excessive or late napping.

Decrease evening “screen time” (phone, TV, computer).

Learn to relax and deal with worries. If the sleep problem in your child/teenager is serious enough to have significant health, behavioural or emotional consequences, then consider discussing the concerns with your child’s doctor.

SENIOR SCHOOL

STAGE 2 (YEAR 12) RESULTS - this includes Year 11 students studying Stage 2 Religion Stage 2 SACE results will be available through Students Online on Tuesday 15 December, from 8:30 am. Official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) will be posted progressively from Tuesday 15 December; all students are expected to receive results envelopes by the end of that week. For more information about SACE results, visit the My results section on the SACE website. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. The PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday e.g. 3 January would have PIN 0301. The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed it if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Stage 2 results will be sent to the address recorded on Students Online in December. Please email Ms Jessica Caruana ([email protected]) by November 30 at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Year 12 students applying for courses through SATAC should ensure that their address and email is correct when they log on to SATAC - this is SEPARATE to SACE - otherwise they won't receive course offers. The contact email address should NOT be the student's school email as this account will be inactive after December 31. STUDENTS are responsible for checking this information and changing if necessary. https://apply.satac.edu.au/lgnrg/x?loginCycle=unis2016 Will you get SACE this year? For most Year 12 students, the remaining "boxes to tick" to get SACE this year are:

pass 3 full Year, Stage 2 subjects

pass Research Project (if they haven't already)

get 200 credits Students expecting to complete a Certificate III this year that can count towards the ATAR must ensure I receive the required documentation by November 30 at the very latest. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching and Learning

Stage 2 Exams - Important Information Special Provisions for Year 12 Exams Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:

please let me know ASAP by emailing me at [email protected]

ensure you have spoken to me BEFORE the exam commences

the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell

students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their moderated predicted exam mark by seeing me at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks.

Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell still do better than their moderated predicted mark! Year 12 SACE Board written examinations are scheduled to start on Monday November 2. Students have already received an exam attendance slip and exam timetable with dates, times and locations in addition to rules relating to sitting the exam. Students must familiarise themselves with these rules and ensure that they know exactly what equipment they are/are not permitted to take into the exam room. Students should also familiarise themselves with the instructions on the front cover of each of their exams (distributed by class teachers last term). I would particularly like to point out that students are not permitted to have a mobile phone or smart watch in their possession and hence these items should not even be brought into the examination room. Ideally exam attendance slips should be brought to each exam. I don't have extra copies so cannot do anything to assist if it has been lost or forgotten. It will not be the end of the world if a student forgets to bring it. It is a bit like a driver's licence - unlikely that I need to check it unless there is a problem! Pencil cases, calculator covers (if a calculator is permitted) and other paper (unless approved notes for Mathematics or IT exams) are also not to be brought into the exam room. If students are permitted to bring a calculator for one or more of their exams, it must be on the list of approved calculators. Likewise, any dictionaries need to be on the list of approved dictionaries. The links below will take you to the lists of approved calculators and dictionaries: Approved calculators: click here Approved dictionaries: click here Students should aim to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before the scheduled start time as there are a number of administrative tasks to do before the exam starts. Please be aware there is a seating arrangement. Most exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, but not ALL - so very important to check the exam timetable carefully. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT STAGE 2 EXAMS CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED.

YEAR 10 AND 11 EXAMS - END OF SEMESTER 2 Year 10 and 11 students have also been emailed their Semester 2 exam timetable and rules relating to exams (timetable included in this newsletter). YEAR 12 WEEK 1 Year 11 students will have their first week of 2016 Year 12 lessons in the week following exams. Students and parents of Year 11 students have been emailed details regarding this week (November 23-26). I wish all students the best of luck with their revision programs in the lead up to final exams. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching and Learning

No verbal consent for medication In line with best practice the Health care centre staff will not accept verbal consent to administer medication (e.g. paracetamol/ibuprofen) to students. At the commencement of each year parents/guardians are given the opportunity to update student records and provide consent in writing for medication administration. The student diary has a section on page 10/11, outlining health care support to students, and offering a consent that can be signed for administration of medication. Please ensure this is signed and the student electronic health records can be updated accordingly. In 2016 the College will be implementing a new medication policy for day students, however in the interim we would

appreciate your cooperation to comply with this practice to ensure medication safety for all students.

End of Year Music Night Friday 16 October the Music department of Sacred Heart College Senior hosted an end of year concert to a packed out auditorium. The night featured all ensembles offered at the senior school and gave each band and choir a huge send off after an extremely busy year. Throughout the night the winners of the SHC Factor competition were announced after keeping the community in suspense for over month since the final. Treehouse Casino was the very deserving winner and performed as special guests at the concert. Other award winners were Guy Fenwick (Year 11) with the Rory O'Grady Award and Sam Harris (Year 10) with the Mollie Gilchrist Award; we congratulate both students for their contribution to the SHC music department. Special thanks must go to all of the SHC instrumental teachers who prepare our students so professionally as well as the SHC Arts staff for their support in the lead up to the event and during the night itself. SHC Factor Winners Congratulations to Treehouse Casino who took out the 2015 SHC Factor Competition with over 70% of the 800 votes tallied. The group plan to use their prize money to either record an EP or buy Troy a haircut. Our Lady of Grace Spring Fair Sunday 18 October two of SHC's music students performed at the Our Lady of Grace Spring Fair. Thank you to James Killian and Miah McGary for helping out on a Sunday morning. They sounded amazing and were a great advertisement for the College.

2015 eLearning news #8 Welcome to the eighth eLearning news article for 2015. One of the fantastic features of Google Apps for Education is the fact that they are constantly changing. Schools continually face the challenge of finding ways to better prepare students for life outside of school. In a world where IT is constantly changing, the continual improvements and updates to Google Apps is a great way to prepare students for these changes. This newsletter outlines some of the more recent changes to Docs, Sheets and Calendar. Research while on the go Do you have an Android phone? Do you like using the Research tool in Google Docs? Well now you can merge the two… Research in the Docs Android app makes working whenever, wherever, easier. Use the feature to search Google without leaving the app, then add those facts, images, and quotes you find directly to your document with only a few taps on the screen. Click on the following link to see this feature in action: Research on Android App Voice typing in Google docs Voice typing allows you to dictate your ideas directly to Docs, both in Chrome on the web and via the Android and iOS mobile apps. When using Docs on the web, simply select Voice typing in the Tools menu, click the microphone button to activate the feature, and start speaking — no keyboard necessary. When using your phone, just tap the microphone button on your keyboard to begin. Save time planning travel with events from Gmail on Google Calendar When you receive an email in Gmail with flight, hotel, restaurant, or ticketed event information, that event will be automatically added to your Google Calendar, complete with information such as flight numbers and check-in times. Calendar will even update those events if plans change and a new email is received (e.g. when a flight is delayed or a reservation is changed). This feature is now available by default on desktop and mobile (both iOS and Android) for all Google Apps users. Events from Gmail added to Calendar will be visible only to the calendar owners by default; however anyone with whom the calendar may have been shared will not be able to see these Calendar events until invited. Any individual unwanted events may be deleted or the feature may be disabled in the Calendar settings if desired. Click on this link for more information Changes made to shared documents Have you shared a document with someone and you would like to see what changes have been made? You can now see the changes made to a Docs file since you last viewed it and who made those changes by clicking on See new changes at the top of your document or from the File menu in Docs.

Google Fonts preserved in Microsoft® Word and PowerPoint on PCs You no longer need to worry about sending documents and presentations created in Docs and Slides to customers and partners using Word and PowerPoint on PCs — even when those documents and presentations contain Google Fonts. Google Fonts will now be preserved when you download Docs and Slides files in Word and PowerPoint. Partial cell formatting in Sheets When it comes to spreadsheets — and the cells that comprise them — sometimes one size doesn’t always fit all. It is now possible to select only a portion of the characters within a cell in Sheets and to apply text formatting to only those characters (as opposed to the entire cell). This functionality is available on the web and in the Sheets Android app. Bernadette Thorpe eLearning Coordinator

Respect Life St Joseph’s Church, Friday 20 November at 7:00 pm

There has been recent media coverage of Pope Francis granting priests permission to absolve the sin of abortion in the Year of Mercy which begins in October. Normally only Bishops have this permission. However since 2007 all priests in the Archdiocese of Adelaide were decreed to grant this absolution and this is an ongoing permission. At a recent national meeting of Clergy Care there was a presentation from Catholic Health on the Church and its care of women who have lost an unborn child through miscarriage, abortion or stillborn, and how this affects them and their partners.

The theme of the presentation was ‘Caring for those who have lost unborn children, healing the wounds of miscarriage and abortion.’ We were asked how might we reach out to those around us who have lost a child before birth and may be grieving alone. How might we help them find healing and hope? Women and men suffer the loss in different ways. We are called to develop the attitude of the Good Samaritan, an attitude of mercy, of a love which does not condemn, but brings consolation and hope. Pope Francis recently stated he had ‘met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonising and painful decision.’

With the parish team I am planning a special Mass in the month of the Holy Souls, November, as a time for families who have lost children – born and unborn – with a time to pray, remember, grieve and find hope. I am also proposing to establish a memorial in our Memorial Garden, dedicated to the memories of unborn children. Mons Ian

Prayer for Life Heavenly Father, in this Year of Grace, we pray that we might become more like the Good Samaritan, so that we might have a heart that sees where love is needed, and reach out to all those carrying a secret sadness. We pray for all those grieving for their lost children; help us to comfort them and bring them hope. Amen
