FROM THE PRINCIPAL: HGP NEWSLETTER

March 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians:

March is here and there are only three months left until the end of the current school year. Gerri Carmine and

Karen Iuliano have been busy meeting with students to plan schedules for the 2013-2014 school year and working

with teachers to get plans in place. Please note on Friday, March 8 the Course Verification form will be posted in

PowerSchool for your review. We will design your son’s schedule around these courses. Please make sure they are

accurate and contact Mrs. Carmine in the Dean of Studies office if you have any questions regarding your son’s

classes.

The Memory Project 2013 The seven core values of HGP are not only found during the discussion in a classroom or a poster on the wall. They

can be found in the smiles of the students and in the crafting of their artistic talents. This year ten HGP students

and Mrs. Smallen expanded the notion of service through the creation of their art work. Ten HGP students

participated in The Memory Project, a national program in which high

school art students create portraits of children living in orphanages in third world

countries. The project provides the children with a special memory of their youth

and helps honor their heritage and identity. The artists in turn practice

kindness, empathy and service to other as they become more aware of

issues in a larger, global community. This year Joe Amato, Alfred

Amendolara, Charlie Bedford, Alex Bogiatzis, Mike Dobuski, Colin Frazier, Tyler

Fulford, Pat Lynsky, Jim Mikalic and Ryan Schollenberger made portraits of

children from Jamaica.

Ben Schumaker, Founder and Director of the Memory

Project, has been pleased with the excellent work and

artistic quality of the work Mrs. Smallen and our

students produce. The portraits will be delivered to kids

in Jamaica at the start of April. You can learn more about

the Memory Project by following the link.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Danilak

CHRISTIAN SERVICE PROGRAM UPDATE

Below is information regarding upcoming service opportunities. Please review it with your son(s) and

encourage him/them to participate whenever possible. Information about service projects is announced at lunch,

at morning meetings, in the daily announcements, and through flyers posted on the service bulletin board on the

second floor of Cornwells Hall. If your son(s) has already completed service applicable to this school year, please

ensure that your son(s) has obtained a service verification form, completed it, and remitted it to me. Verification

forms are available on the Service page of the school’s website – www.holyghostprep.org - along with the

Program’s Brochure and a listing of approved volunteer agencies and internet links to some.

Upcoming Service Opportunities 1) Bowling for Libertae

Due to the success of its January Bowl-A-Thon, this Bensalem-based agency which helps women break the

cycle of addiction will be holding a 2nd such fundraiser on Saturday, March 9th from 7-10 PM at Pike Lanes in

Southampton. Students must garner $30 in pledges in order to bowl and earn 3 service hours. Interested students

should obtain a pledge form from Mr. Fitzpatrick.

HGP will send 4 students to this Philadelphia soup kitchen to help serve the evening meal. A van will leave

HGP at 3:40 and return @ 7:00 PM. Students who are interested in this service project should sign up with Mr.

Fitzpatrick. The next trips will occur on March 5 and 19. Students may bring casual clothes into which to change.

3) Holy Family Regional School

HGP will send students to this Levittown School on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of most months to assist with

the after-school CARES program. Van transportation will leave HGP @2:50 and return circa 5:30. See Mr.

Fitzpatrick to sign-up and obtain a permission form. The next trips will occur on March 7 and March 21.

4) HGP Blood Drive

The Community Service Corps of HGP will be sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, March 26. Students

who donate blood will receive 1 service hour. More information about how to sign up for a time will be announced

at morning assemblies and through daily announcements on EHGP. Questions should be directed to Mrs. Flynn,

Cornwells Room 315.

5) Hand-in-Hand

On April 13, St. Joseph University will sponsor a day of carnival-type activities for those with special needs.

Students are needed as volunteer “buddies” for the day. More information is available from Mrs. Flynn in Room C

315.

6) Special People in the Northeast (SPIN)

SPIN will be hosting a 5K race near its NE Philadelphia site (near Flyers’ Skatezone) on April 14. SPIN is

seeking 15-20 volunteers to assist with set-up and coordination of tasks during the race. Volunteers are needed

7) Water for Waslala

Also on April 14, Water for Waslala will be sponsoring its annual 5K walk/fundraiser to defray the cost of

potable water projects in western Nicaragua. HGP is one of WFW’s most significant supporters. Each year, Mr.

Eckerle organizes a formidable HGP contingent to participate.

Page 3: FROM THE PRINCIPAL: HGP NEWSLETTER March 2013 · Thanks to Mr. Eckerle and the student members of SAIVE (Students Against Injustice and Violence Everywhere) for organizing HGP’s

8) Libertae

Libertae Half-Way House for Women in Bensalem is seeking male, high-school-aged models for its Spring

Fashion Show on April 25. See Mr. Fitzpatrick if interested.

From February 25 until March 8, HGP will be collecting canned goods for the benefit of Philabundance as part of

the Great Food Fight sponsored by Shire Pharmaceuticals. The Great Food Fight is a competition among high

schools from the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Thanks to Mr. Eckerle and the student members of SAIVE (Students Against Injustice and Violence Everywhere) for

organizing HGP’s efforts! Last year, HGP won the prize for collecting the most pounds of food per student!

Please consider making a donation and helping HGP repeat its 2012 success! Donation boxes are located

throughout the school.

NB – Sometimes, HGP learns of service projects in the interim between publications of this monthly bulletin. So, it

is important that students listen to announcements and check the PowerPoint presentation in the dining hall for

additional service opportunities.

Thank you for your attention to this update. If you have any questions about the Service Program, please contact

me via e-mail me at [email protected]

Respectfully,

Mr. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Eckerle

March, 2013

Dear HGP Moms:

March Madness is upon us! March is a very busy month for the Mothers’ Guild with many opportunities for

us to come together as a community. First off, we welcome our Incoming Freshman Class of 2017 at Mass on

Sunday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Reception in the dining hall. Also, on Sunday, March 3, the

HGP Forensics Team is hosting their Annual Pasta Dinner from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Our Monthly Guild

Meeting is Monday, March 4,, at 7:00 p.m. And, our Annual Mother/Son Dance will be held on Saturday,

March 9.

I would like to thank those Moms who have signed up to assist our School Hospitality Committee on Sunday,

March 3,, at the Incoming Freshman Mass. We certainly appreciate you giving up your Sunday morning to

welcome our new families to the HGP Community and share with them all that the school has to offer.

Need an excuse not to cook Sunday dinner? Consider sharing a wonderful pasta dinner with your family

while supporting the HGP Forensics Team Annual Pasta Dinner prepared by La Stalla of Newtown. Come

out anytime between 3:00-6:30 p.m. and share some wonderful food, take some chances on basket raffles, see

great performances and listen to music from the HGP band. Tickets can be purchased online at

www.forensics.holyghostprep.org or at the door. Contact Libby Hammerschlag at 215-589-8111 or

[email protected]

Please be sure to attend our Monthly Guild Meeting on Monday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m. where there will be a

surprise celebration for our special guest of honor. In addition to our Surprise Celebration, we will be

accepting nominations for next year’s Mothers’ Guild Executive Board. If you have ever considered joining

the Mothers’ Guild Board, now is the time. I encourage everyone to please consider giving of your time and

nominating either yourself or someone else. I am leaving HGP with no regrets. Over the past 12 years serving

on the Board in different capacities has been more rewarding than I anticipated going into it. My heart is

full…we are a sisterhood and I wish that every Mom could have the same positive experience that I have been

fortunate enough to share with my fellow Board Members (Moms).

Your calendars should be marked for our annual Mother/Son Dance scheduled for Saturday, March 9,

beginning with the Celebration of Mass in the Chapel at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing in the Field

House. This will definitely be a “Magical Evening” that we will share with our sons.

It is time to honor the Alumni Moms at our annual Alumni Mothers’ Celebration on Monday, April 8, 2013

hosted by the Senior Moms. Please read the attached flyer for ways in which you can help. Senior Moms:

The $10 donation that you sent in at the beginning of the year will be used to host this event. If you didn’t get

a chance to send in your donation, we are still accepting donations.
