Parent-Teacher Interviews Parent teacher interviews went well this week. Teachers commented on how valuable it was to gain information from parents about their children. Gaining this information is invaluable and helps the teacher to understand their children in their grade.

Our clubs program is up and running. Mr Mackay has put quite a bit of work into ensuring there is a good variety of clubs for the children to access. Writing Wall

Last Friday evening the teachers stayed after school and assembled the writing wall. The standard is excellent. Reading through the children’s work I am so pleased with the quality of writing they are producing. I recommend if possible come and have a look and read. It is such a celebration of our children’s work and ultimately achievements.

Camp Information Evening

Next week 27th February (7pm) the 5/6 team will be conducting the Camp Weekaway Information evening. The team will go through the procedures, timeline and answer questions. The camps program at Dorset is invaluable. The amount the children learn during this week is huge.

Paperless

Dorset is aiming at becoming paperless. The target is to print out no notices/newsletter so we are doing our share to save the environment. Please download the Flexibuzz app to ensure you are kept informed and receive all notices.

Leaders

The leaders for 2019 have been selected and are excited to begin their leadership journey. It is so exciting to have this responsibility and a lot of valuable learning takes place in all of these roles. The badge ceremony will take place at 2pm on March 6th in our hall. SPECIALIST CORNER: PERFORMING ARTS I am very excited to be running a Performing Arts program at Dorset this year. I am calling it Performing Art as we will be learning about Music (of course), but will also be learning elements of Drama, Multi-Media and a small amount of Dance as well. The first five weeks of Term One include learning about beat and rhythm, with younger students exploring these concepts using a range of percussion instruments, while the older students learn about rhythm, basic music notation and chords using the xylophones and glockenspiels. The second half of this term, we will be focusing on the Mutli-Media concepts of image (still and moving), sound and text and how these can be combined together to create messages and stories. The Foundation to Grade 2 classes will be combining music and text to still images, while Grades 3 to 6 will be adding meaningful text and music to video footage. A big feature of our Performing Arts program is this year’s Production. A script has been written, plans are being prepared, the venue is booked and auditions for the main parts will be coming up for the Grade 5-6 students in Week 6. SAKG NEWS Hello from the Kitchen. The Grade 3 students have done a great job for only their second kitchen session this week. This week in the kitchen is their first session preparing actual recipes in their groups and working together as a team. I was very impressed with how well they took on tasks that were very new to them. They were very organized preparing the recipes assigned to their different groups and showed great team work cleaning up their work area. The Grade 3 students have showed great enthusiasm towards learning more involved and complex recipes in the SAKG Kitchen and have adapted well to this challenge from the cooking activities they completed from Foundation to Grade 2. There has been some great support from our parent community so far in 2019, helping students during their cooking sessions. There are classes in the 3 / 4 area and also in 5 /6 that would benefit from more parent involvement, even if parents are unable to make it due to work or other commitments every week – having your support every now and then is still very beneficial to the students. Also, I would like to mention that Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles, etc. are more than welcome to assist students in the kitchen. Please note: a working with children check is required which can be presented to the office staff for their records. I would also like to request if there are any dietary needs your child has which the school is not currently aware of, e.g. allergies, food intolerances, cultural restrictions, etc., please submit the details in writing to the office staff. Once I have received this information, I will be able to modify recipes to accommodate the individual dietary requirements of all students. Thanks, Regards, Gregg Hansford

CHAPLAINS CHAT WITH DAVE SILENT TREATMENT There is always one thing a child has control over – their own silence. A child who refuses to speak can push an adult right to the edge of sanity. We are busy. We want to solve problems and move on. We want a respectful response. My three kids all require different strategies when they are angry. Forcing them to open up – demanding answers – usually just escalates the problem. So, here’s what I’ve learned. The first thing I learned is they are all different. The oldest, a boy, is quiet by nature and could happily go all day without speaking to anyone. The next, also a boy, chatters constantly, and if there’s no one to talk to he will talk to himself – even now, at 19. The youngest, a girl, loves a good conversation, when she’s ready. So when dealing with the anger of each, different strategies are necessary. With the quiet self-motivator – direct questions. Sit, next to him (driving works). He loves a challenge. He will answer anything. As a 16 year-old, he came into the lounge room and said, “I need you guys to help me out. What can I work on regarding my personality and interpersonal skills?” We gave him a list! Amazingly, he was grateful. When he was about 4 he said, “Dad, can you not be so silly around me? I like it serious.” So, I try! With the talkative boy – leading statements. Sit, facing him. Eye contact helps keeps him on topic. “That really seemed to upset you…” Then listen. That usually works. Then positive present statements / questions (don’t compare to the past him, or to his siblings) “That looked like fun, at first.” Or “You were having fun, what happened?” or “I noticed your attitude changed about 2 minutes ago. What happened?” This boy is very talkative. I try to guide his verbal flow, keeping it on topic and leading to solutions. With the conversational girl – clarity and patience. Sit, patiently. This one, being the last of three and the girl, has lots of useful examples. She watches her brothers. She watches Mum and Dad. She studies everyone! And she has heaps of emotional intelligence. When she is upset, she is upset at herself as much as the other people – because she doesn’t want to be upset. So, the strategy I’ve found: When she is angry, just say, “I have noticed you are angry and I would like to talk about it. I will be on the couch reading, when you are ready.” She will come. It may take hours. But, she will come. And, I love reading! We all experience the silent treatment from those around us. Learning how to use it for their benefit, rather than your frustration, will make your day so much better! Perhaps you see one of your kids in my examples. Perhaps your kids are different than mine. The key is to watch yourself and learn – when something works, ask yourself why. Apply and refine your learning each time you encounter the silent treatment. That’ll get them talking!
