AsismyNewYear’sEvecustom,IwatchedtheTwilightZonemarathonontelevision,30minuteepisodesinblackandwhite,onerightaftertheother,storiesofspacealiensinunexpectedplaces,andcomputersthesize of our parish hall that sometimes don’t behave. In my family we sit around together, makingpredictions and waiting for our favorite episodes, taking occasional naps, and finding sustenance inpopcornandleftoverChristmaschocolate.
InthehoursspentwatchingtheTwilightZone, Ihave learnedconclusivelythatthingsusuallyaren’twhattheyseemtobe,andwhatyouthoughtyouknewaboutanyplot,isn’tthewholestoryafterall. Justwhenyouthinkyouhavefiguredoutwhatisgoingtohappennext,youfindthatyouaremistaken.
In thesedaysofChristmasandEpiphany, theChurchteachesusessentially thesamething. Ababy inabarn is actually the Ruler of the universe. Theman baptized by John in the Jordan River is bothGod’sBelovedSon,butalsotheguywhoisimmediatelythrustintoalifeofhardshipanddanger.
Thetwistendingalwayssurprisesus. Jesusisbothlessimpressivethanmighthavewanted—hewieldsnomagicwand,no impressivebenefitsofbeingpartof the royalhousehold—andmore impressive thanwecouldhaveimagined.JesusisthestubbornSaviorwhowillstopatnothingtobewithus.Comewhatmay,heisalwaysthere,nomatterwhatplottwistsoccur.Thisparticularcalendaryearholdsaninterestingtwistbecausewewill enter into theholy seasonofLentonValentine’sDay,andwill celebrateEasteronAprilFool’sDay.Odd,right?
Myadvice is keepwatching the story theChurch tells and lives. Because justwhenyou thinkyouhavefiguredoutwhatiscomingnext,youwillalmostcertainlybemistaken.

St. John on the Mountain continues the tradition ofhaving fresh flowers on the altars. The arrangementsenhance the sanctuary and are shared afterwards withthesickordividedtouseagainthefollowingweekinthechapel. Donationsofflowersaremadeasmemorialsorin thanksgiving for special occasions. A date can besharedbymorethanonedonor.The2018flowersign-upcharts are now posted on the bulletin board in thehallwayofthechurchbuilding,oppositetheentrancetothe Chapel sacristy.
