My creative process has resulted in a way to summarize the preced-ing year in a manner fitting the season. The following lyrics can be sung, with great gusto, to the melody of The Twelve Days of Christmas. I have presented only the final verse here because it tells the entire story and I don’t have to burn that much space.

My Twelve Months in Office

In my twelfth month in office,The yacht club gave to me,

One final column,My replacement voted in,

Mailing agendas,Volunteers hiding,

One last committee,A venue for the Ball,

Zongo date in conflict,Two boats to lien,

Opening Day,One slick floor,Two auditors,

And a Robert’s Rules for Dummies

Those of you who attended the Commodore’s Ball might have missed the private little cer-emony between Vice Commodore Pat Hedges, Carol Walker, and myself while the rest of you were dancing to the Mighty Croon Dogs. Pat forgot to present my gifts during the installation of officers, and he had lost the crowd by the time he remembered. I have a flagpole in front of my house, and had two historic but no current U.S. flag. Pat gave me a nice 50-star U.S. flag with embroidered stars and a large club burgee to fly from my flagpole. I want everyone to know that I value and appreciate these gifts, and I can see the U.S. flag from my window as I write this.

As many of you know, I also teach an aikido class at the Morro Bay Community Center. Dy-lanne Fee takes the karate class in the room next door to my class, and in her own creative impulse has designated me “commodore sensei.” As far as I know, I am the first person to be designated at that rank by either a yacht club or a dojo. I’ve agonized over the proper insignia of rank, and have concluded that three stars on a black belt is more fitting than the other read-ily apparent choice of a fourth star. Since I will soon hold the office of staff commodore sensei, they will be silver stars, but I will not include the designation “junior,” since I will be the first and therefore always the most senior.

Looking forward to life after office, I am gearing up my marketing efforts for the next phase of my career: ghostwriting commodores’ columns. Columns that are entertaining while having some necessary informational content are guaranteed. On-time performance is not.

Fun Float Dec. 13th. Tue. 10:30 AMOn our Nov. paddle we were able to find tracks that we were sure were made by the elusive but tasty Sands-pit Turkey. The tracks led us around in circles then down to the bay. Well, we knew that turkeys didn’t swim. So we put our heads together and figured out they had trained Seagulls to lead us on a Wild Foul chase. I am sure we will get them next year.

Happy Holidays!! On Tuesday, Dec. 13th at 10:30 we will go and find a nice spot on the Spit to have our an-nual White Elephant Christmas party. Please each one bring one gift to exchange (price limit $200.) A few snacks and maybe a bobble for our tree. Your Ever-lovin Elf,G.P.P.

P.S. Our Jan float will be Wed. Jan. 11th at 10:30

FUN FLOAT

Allow me to begin this month’s column by passing along my condolences to member Anne Mi-randa and family on the passing of her husband, Ted. Ted was a friend, a fellow Ham Radio Op-erator, and, of course, a Staff Commodore (1983) and Life Member (24). Ted will be missed.

On less important things in life, work continues around the clubhouse. If you were around for Happy Hour or the Commodore’s Race, or just happened to be around over the weekend, you noticed a work-in-progress around the bar. Once again, Bob Smirl, who is now starting to be picked up on the radar, was lending his expertise in replacing some cancerous, dry-rotted wood next to one of the sinks behind the bar. Jim Phillips, ably fulfilling his du-ties as Staff Commodore, supervised Bob’s work and the countertop in bar area is once again shipshape.

In addition to replacing the damaged wood, Bob and Jim, who is now exceed-ing his duties as Staff Commodore, both tackled the ailing finish on the bar’s “deck” by removing the existing finish and re-varnishing the “deck”. Looking good, guys. Thanks.

On an unrelated topic, I thank you for the honor of being elected 2012 Commo-dore. As I mentioned at the Commodore’s Ball, this will be 50 years since my uncle, Lew Hedges, was Commodore in 1962. I look forward to this undertak-ing and I thank all of you who have offered up your assistance during the next year.

And on yet another unrelated topic, I have a couple of “Tips of the Month”… 1) the elements take their toll on anything exposed to the salt air, including padlocks. Occasionally, padlocks don’t want to re-lock after they have been opened with a key. If this happens, try turning the key in the lock and then close the lock and then remove the key. This should work until the lock gets lubricated; 2) Sometimes the hallway door next to the ladies room doesn’t want to open when using your fob. If this happens, try pulling the door and then push the door. This will free up the electric lock and allow the door to open. We’ll continue to work on adjustments to see if we can’t get a permanent remedy.

Finally, let me recognize the fabulous work our Masthead Editor, Maryann Stansfield, and staff have done to publish the Masthead every month. This is the main way to “get the word” out and they come through, month in and month out. Thank you.

Pat Hedges, Vice Commodore

FROM YOUR REAR COMMODORE Bob Walker

As 2011 comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of the Morro Bay Yacht Club members who have given so generously of their time and energy in support of the club’s sailing program. Listed below are some specific contributions by many of our members. My apologies in advance for any contributions I may have overlooked, my memory is not what it used to be. Now what was I talking about? Oh! Ya! Ocean FleetRon May volunteered to be Ocean Fleet Captain, John Michener stepped up to serve as Ocean fleet Cap-tain when Ron was unable to continue, Lynn Meissen for her articles describing the Ocean Fleet racing, Paul Irving serving as Ocean Fleet cruising Captain, Bob Smirl for making some very attractive trophies , Ron May and Bob Smirl for MBYC racing mark. A special thanks to all the racers, without their participa-tion there would not be a program. Bay Fleet Carlton Smith serving as Day Sailor Fleet Captain, Dawn Huntsinger serving as Laser Fleet Captain, the

Ryghs and Lockwoods co-captained the Lido Fleet, Howard Grisham Safety Boat, Rachelle Phillips Race committee, Dot and Pat Rygh PRO training session and continuing mentoring of the Rear Commodore, Ron Giddings Rules workshop, Gail Condon for advice and support (most of the time). We were very fortunate to have the support of many businesses in our in our commu-nity as well.

That community support has included: Windows on the Water gift certificates, Blue Sky Café discounted gift certificate, Kayak Horizons shop discounted rental, Opolo Winery, Venteux Winery, Oso Libre Winery, Denner Winery, all gave complimentary wine tasting. Karl of SLO Sail and Canvas has given many gifts that were used as both door prizes and racing awards, such as racing chart covers, hiking straps, equipment bags, and rudder covers. Thanks for your support Karl.

I hope you all have a Great Christmas and hope to see you the water.Bob WalkerRear Commodore

Winners of the Bay Fleet Fall series. They are wearing the rudder covers donated by SLO Sail and Canvas. There seems to be some confusion about the proper uses of a rudder cover. At this point it is best to leave names of the guilty anonymous.

The winners of Fall III. Not sure what is going in the group pictures, too many smiles

This is a picture of a PRO. Something we can

all aspire too.

Looks like the fleet might be a group of slow learners. What are these boats doing that the leader is not?

FROM YOUR OCEAN FLEET CAPTAINNov 13 race

Three boats were on the dock on Saturday night ready for the race.Sunday we were happy to see a fourth - Baloo with Scott Morris assembling his (rather short) crew was very welcome. He has

not participated in the ocean races since his wrist incident.

The race was interesting for the weather as sun and very blue water are irresistible. Courses are limited to standard marks since our MBYC mark has again disappeared. The wind was variable to start but we hoped for and got improvement.

WhizBang and Baloo crossed the start line in good time despite the light wind. Voyager and Guayacan were left bobbing in the swell for some 20 minutes - a poor start is normal for the latter and unthinkable for the former. Voyager’s crew member Paul

said they were testing a strategy he can not reveal. Guayacan bobbed a lot longer; Voyager found her slot andmade up those minutes once the wind finally came up. Then we all had a great sail from 18 to Constantine then MB. If we didn’t win a 1st place

cup, we were sure to win the fun category: watching the GPS at 6-8 knots is really fun!

Congratulations to Voyager first place in 1:47:47, Whiz Bang second place 1:55:52, Guayacan third place 2:03:33.

IN MEMORY of TED MIRANDA1983 Staff Commodore, Ted Miranda, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011, at his home in Morro Bay. He was an integral part of the Yacht Club in the early years, as he contributed considerably to the building of the clubhouse. At that time, he owned an electrical supply house, so the club was lucky to receive electrical donations from him. His former boat, Pure Lust, still rides high on a club mooring. During WW II, he served as a Coast Watcher aboard a destroyer in the Admiralty Islands. He was a fair man, a great competitor, and always had a smile on his face. He will be missed by many and Anne said she will especially miss him picking her up from bridge on Friday afternoons. Rest in peace, Ted.

Sailing with Friends - By Rory McClish It was that time of year again. Fall, decent wind, but the best part is the Regattas. Every couple of weeks, another one pops up on the calendar. Soon the dinner table turns to a convention to decide which ones not only a parent(s) can get off work for, but one, two, or three kids can manage as well. Then begins the hectic mass of logistics; who is going, how are the boats getting there, where’s everybody staying, any carpools, etc… As the week starts, I’m reminded countless times to pack early as the trip is only a few days away. Yet as usual, I’m jumping out of bed early before school Friday morning in order to crash-pack while I wish I had heeded the advice.

School is completely pointless on Fridays before a Regatta. I’m not focused, can’t concentrate, I’m worried I forgot to pack my socks—again. The second the bell rings, I’m out the hall and into the only big-white-optimoto-towing-packed-tight van around, I say hi to the gang, and then were off.

This last particular trip was to Santa Barbara for the annual super-fun Goblin Regatta. The Weekend Warriors repre-senting the Morro Bay Yacht Club were: Steve Hendricks, Terry Paris, Olivia and Ian McDonald, Joe Repucci, Audrey McClish, Andrew Monroe, and myself. This was perhaps one of the biggest showings from our club all year.

Perhaps the best part of the Regatta, besides the actual sailing, is the Saturday morning. Anticipation, stress, excite-ment, all are boiling up inside. But the tension was eased by seeing all the usual suspects. As it was one of my first out-of-town laser regattas, I had no idea who was in my fleet. But as I helped Audrey set up her opti, I saw countless smiling faces from my opti days. Then a black SUV rolled up with a radial on top. Out came Cooper Weitz, one of the very first optisailors I had met at my first Regatta at the San Francisco Yacht Club. It has been six years that I’ve been sailing against him, and we’re still great friends. He just finished his Opti Career sailing on the national team all over the world. Now he is in the radial class and we’re still sailing against each other. Even though Cooper’s sailing career is and has been so much more extensive than mine, it’s fun to catch up and (try to) give him a run for his money.

The regatta delivered moderate winds and lots of sun. It was a great experience for all of the Morro Bay sailors. It’s places we go and the people we meet, that make sailing in out-of-town regattas so fun.

December 2011

- Mark Twain
