The season of Lent is not mandated in the Bible, but has long been a meaningful tradition in the church. This custom was meant to be a time when believers reflect upon the state of their own spiritual well-being. As Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness, prayerfully identifying the temptations that would lure him away from faithfulness, we too need periodic times of assessing our personal spiritual health. Ash Wednesday is the traditional beginning of Lent. It is called “Ash Wednesday” because of the custom of imposing ashes on the forehead of believers. This is a custom which I cannot participate in. Consider these two biblical passages:

Isaiah 58:5-7 tells us, “Is such the fast that I (the LORD) choose, a day to

humble yourself? Is it to bow down your head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?”

And in Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus teaches, “Whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the

hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen, not by others, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

I have no right to judge anyone who administers, or receives ashes, but I must be faithful to what I believe are the whispers and nudges of the Holy Spirit. So on “Ash Wednesday” I will not administer ashes, but I will gladly anoint with oil anyone desiring God’s blessing. Remember, God loves us absolutely, unconditionally and eternally. That does not mean that God loves everything we think, say, or do, but God never stopped loving us!

BOARD OF GLOBAL OUTREACH - How you can help make a difference!

The Board will continue to suggest the foods that the East Haven Food Pantry have on their

short list including chili in the can, baked beans, peanut butter, tuna fish, soup, cereal. They

also continue to need small box of raisins and fruit cups for their backpack program. As

always, the Food Pantry is grateful for any contributions of food.

Donations of gently used blankets for the homeless Midnight Run, and towels for the East

Haven Animal Shelter are being collected in March.

One Great Hour of Sharing UCC Offering will be received on March 31. This offering is

directed to disaster areas and refuge relief kits. Last year $2 million and volunteers provided

services for projects in 26 countries and 16 US states.

Thank you for your generosity to support these mission projects.

Free Lunch from the Community Kitchen East Haven United’s Community Kitchen will serve lunch on Saturdays, March 2nd and 16th, to any member of the community wishing to enjoy a free meal alongside their neighbors. Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Christ and The Epiphany Church, 39 Park Place (on the

East Haven Green). All are welcome. For more info, please call 203-397-6409.

From Your Flower Committee….. Memorial Flowers to decorate our Sanctuary at Easter may be purchased by completing the enclosed order form. Order forms will also be available in the Sunday bulletins March 24th, 31st and April 7th. Please make your check payable to Old Stone Church. After the Easter service, you may take your flowers home or the Deacons will arrange to have them delivered to a shut-in. To reserve your plant(s), please return the form with your payment by the deadline of April 7th.

Church Youth are welcome to attend an educational program to be held at Clancy’s on Sunday, March 10, from

12 to 1:00 p.m. The topic will be “The process of grief and today’s youth”. This will be open to

young people in grades 7 through 12. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. A pizza

lunch will follow at 1:00 p.m. Please contact Louise Ward at 203-469-6729 if you would like to

attend. A count of those attending will be needed by Sunday, March 3rd.

March is a fun month when we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with green eggs and ham, etc. We also have a pajama day, St. Patrick’s Day art projects, and spring activities such as planting. We have already taken class walks to discuss and observe nature first hand. Units on science are always interesting and fun. Take a walk down our hallway and enjoy the hard work of all our students. You’ll be surprised at the creativity and experiences. That’s your E.L.C. staff, hard at work! We continue to welcome Ms. Sascha from the town’s library for her monthly visits. We thank Dr. Karen Gallo for her visit in February for Dental Month. She had a wonderful lesson to share with all as well as a “goodie bag” of special treats to promote dental awareness.

We are starting our Summer and Fall registrations. We are fortunate to offer a summer program for 3-8 year old children in the summer. Our fall registration is for 3-5 year olds. The Early Learning Center offers a three-hour educational program with wonderful projects and learning experiences on a daily basis. We also offer a full day program to accommodate our working parents. As always, we look to the congregation to spread the word about our exceptional program and dedicated staff that create such a child-friendly environment. Pass the information along. Take note of our new signs on the fences. We have a wonderful informational website and various news releases.

This month, I am providing a little historical information on the Old Stone Church Organ, which I have been asked about periodically since joining you last fall. The organ is an excellent pipe instrument that since 1894 –125 years this year! – has provided rich music for the congregation with appropriate repairs and renovations as necessary. Many thanks to Peggy Thomas for the access to the church archives enabling this discussion.

Church records indicate that the earliest musical instrument purchased by Old Stone Church was a melodeon placed in 1850 in the balcony. In 1874, to commemorate the church’s centennial, the melodeon was replaced by a small parlor organ in the space where the grand piano now sits.

In 1895, that parlor organ, eventually donated to the Hagaman Memorial Library, was replaced with a Johnson pipe organ which (with the modifications described below) we now experience weekly; its $2,250 cost was pro-vided by the John Woodward Thompson Fund. For the next 33 years, air into the pipes was pumped by hand during church services, but in 1928, the organ’s air supply was electrified along with the church itself.

In 1949, in memory of Mildred Hindsley Goodrich by her husband Walter Holt Goodrich, the organ was mod-ernized by Raymond L. Clarke of New Haven, and 21 Mayland chimes were added. In 1974, to commemorate the church’s bicentennial, the Wicks Organ Company of Illinois was commissioned to rebuild the organ, retaining the pipes (with repairs as necessary) and the console (where the organist sits and plays), but modernizing all other parts. In 1987, the console itself was replaced by Austin Organs of Hartford, and additional restoration work continued in the 1990s, with the organ's most recent re-dedication on April 30, 2000.

What can be learned from this brief history? One powerful lesson would be that Old Stone Church’s foundation of hundreds of years continues today based on the generosity, hard work, and wise decisions made from genera-tion to generation. In this, the 125th anniversary year of our pipe organ, the prayer of Pastor Louis Duane Hatfield during the Nov. 27, 1949, re-dedication service remains powerful: “Our God to whom the Heaven resounds, we thank Thee for the life and devotion of Thy servants whose souls will sing through the music of this organ and these chimes in the years that are to come. . . Translate our lives into the notes and modulations of Thy life, cheer and inspire us by all Thy varied ministries, and may all the strains of our earthly praise find their harmony in the great chorus of those who sing around the throne of the redeemed.”
