    Chancellor

    comparisons

    Businessrulesat UW-Whitewa-

    ter. The universitys largest depart-

    ment also receives thelargestsalaries.

    Chancellor Richard Telfer says

the disparity is caused by external

    forces: thedemand for business pro-

    fessors across thecountry.

    Almost all

    of these have anational market

    wearecomparing

    itto,he said.So

    it renders less

    what a communi-

    cation professor

    is getting com-

    pared to anybody

else here than it is what thecommu-

nication professor is getting next to

    someone at another institution.

    Dean of Letters and Sciences

    Mary Pinkertonsaidshe hasheard the

    arguement but isntconvinced others

    should be making less.

    Thats the argument thats been

    presented,is thatfor peoplein busi-

    ness its a market-driven situation

where they could make more on the

    outside, shesaid.Is thatideal?Is that

fair? Thoseare good questions. I think

    salariesin Letters and Sciences should

    be higher.

Pinkerton said she has had com-

    plaints about salariesand would liketo

    payfacultyin thecollege more.

    People feeltheirwork isntvalued,

she said. They just dont feel they are

    being compensated in proportion to

their productivity in terms of teaching

or research or grant getting and those

kinds of things in relation to their col-

leagues [within their college and othercolleges].

    Telfersaidwhen tryingto finda pro-

    fessorfor a particularrole,theuniversity

has to offer a salary in the range that

    other peoplein thatspecialtyare getting.

    There are certain departments where

that average is higher than other depart-

ments, he said. In part, it may have to

do with the number of people, but it may

also have to do with the options that peo-

    plehaveto go to other places.

So, for example, if youre in a de-

partment that has a relatively high salary

expectation, then the other schools in the

country are also aware of that. And so if

they want this professor, they know theyre

    going to have to paymore.

    Other factorsthatdeterminea persons

    salary includehow longa personhasbeen

at theinstitution or hisor herlevel of edu-

    cation.

    PublicInformationDirector SaraKuhl

said people who have chosen to become

teachers make a choice to leave positions

in the private sector, which pay a lot of

    money.

    These professorssalaries have to be

    verycompetitivein order to attractthe best

that we can,she said.Andnot to dimin-

ish anyone elses work that they do, but

    thereare probably moreEnglish professors

than there are accounting or economics

    [professors].

    UW-Whitewaters average professor

salary is $74,500,according to the Chron-

icle of Higher Education. It ranks 11th outof 25 Wisconsinschools surveyed.

Sois it more importantthatso and so

has a higher or lower salary than another

person or is it more important that in our

campus the average salary is pitifully low

    [compared to other similar schools?]

    Telfer said.

Kuhl said asa whole the UWSystem

    is belowwhat other universities arepaying

    faculty and staff nationally.

    If youre just lookingat [UW-White-

water salaries] its like, wow, some of

    thesepeoplemakewhat appearsto bea lot

of money, she said. But were losing

    peopletoother institutions because of[low

    numbers].

Kuhl said a benefit is that faculty at

    UW-Whitewater is highly committed to

    teachingits students.

A lot them know that they could be

    elsewhere making moremoney, shesaid.

Its a real benefit to studentsthat wehave

those kinds of committed people here.
