UNITY THROUGH RHYTHM -‘THE BEAT GOES ON’

During the past several years, Unity Through Rhythm programs presented as part of Frontier Community Ed have introduced participants to the beauty and enjoyment of hand drumming and drum circles . A series of four classes will be offered this summer as a continuation and extension of these previous offerings . This program is presented for individuals looking to improve existing techniques of hand drumming, explore African and Afro-Caribbean rhythms in more depth and enhance improvisation skills . The class will review different tones of the djembe and how they are applied to rhythms . The concept of poly-rhythms will be explored both through learning specific African and Afro-Cuban rhythms, also free-form drumming. As a class, we’ll create our own poly-rhythms as a way of enhancing listening and the concept of “fitting into the rhythm”. The African bass drums - dununs - will be used prominently to highlight their role in providing rhythm foundation . Hand-held percussion instruments will be demonstrated and then used to contribute to a rhythm groove . The intent of this program is to be a fast-paced course in which prior experience with drumming/rhythm will definitely be beneficial for both individuals and the class. Class instructor Stephen Bell is a retired WNY middle school principal, who has been a life-long percussionist. He has received considerable training in hand drumming and drum circle facilitation and has presented hundreds of facilitated drum circles to children and adults . TUESDAY Steve Bell Starts: 7/9 Sessions: 4 7:00-8:30 Fee: $40* Middle School NR: $50 Auditorium *No Golden Pass discount given on this course.

MARTIAL ARTSThis course will serve as a comprehensive introduction and basic study of Hung Gar Kung Fu Karate, an ancient traditional method that derives its theory from the five major animals of Chinese martial arts i.e., the dragon, snake, leopard, crane and tiger. Kung Fu Karate is considered a path of self discovery in which the student will find, hopefully, a rich philosophical understanding as well as a way to improve one’s health and self image through discipline and practice. The students will be introduced to the “drills”, which not only develops strength but imparts the theory that makes the system work. Through diligent practice and reflection, the student will discover a sense of balance and harmony while developing a healthy mind, body and spirit . This course will be an interactive hands-on experience including physical and mental conditioning as well as philosophy, attitude and character development. Carefully managed physical contact is a necessary component of training a martial art . Successful completion of the course will result in a solid basis of understanding of what it is like to practice Kung Fu with the ability to carry this experience into an active Kung Fu school . Please wear loose comfortable clothing to class. The instructor, Sifu Robert Gott, is the owner of the Red Dragon School of Martial Arts located at the McKinley Mall.
