ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems Certificate Programs

Founded in 1945, the International Society of Automation (www.isa.org) is a leading, global,

nonprofit organization that is setting the standard for automation by helping over 30,000

worldwide members and other professionals solve difficult technical problems, while enhancing

their leadership and personal career capabilities. Based in Research Triangle Park, North

Carolina, ISA develops standards; certifies industry professionals; provides education and

training; publishes books and technical articles; and hosts the largest conference and exhibition

for automation professionals in North America. ISA is the founding sponsor of The Automation

Federation (www.automationfederation.org).

ISA84 Certificate Programs

ISA and the Automation Standards Compliance Institute (ASCI)

have introduced three certificate programs to increase knowledge

and awareness of the ISA84 standard.

Each certificate program includes specialized training on ISA84 and

an exam that is offered through Prometric testing centers. Those

who register for the training course and the certificate program, and

successfully complete the exam, will be issued an ISA certificate

specifying their expertise as an

• ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist (ISA84 SFS) - Certificate 1

• ISA84 SIL Selection Specialist (ISA84 SSS) - Certificate 2

• ISA84 SIL Verification Specialist (ISA84 SVS) - Certificate 3

You can register for the course only, without exam, if you do not

want to apply for the certificate program.

Safety professionals who successfully complete all three certificate

programs are designated as an ISA84 SIS Expert.

Registration & Application

Renewals

All ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems Certificates must be

renewed every three years. To renew your certificate, you will be

required to complete an application and document:

A minimum 2 years work experience in process safety

A year is defined as 1,500 hours of active employment

A cumulative total of 3,000 hours of documented work

experience is required during the three year renewal period

Successful completion the ISA84 Certificate Program Renewal

Seminar (online web seminar)

Certificate vs. Certification Programs

Certificate programs are typically associated with mastery of

specific course content and may or may not require work

experience, while certification programs are based on a job analysis

identifying specific knowledge, skills, and attributes to perform a

specific job and require that successful candidates demonstrate

identified knowledge, skills, and attributes beyond any educational

program.

Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist (ISA84 SFS)

requires the completion of the 3-day training course (EC50) with an

exam.

There are no required prerequisites; however, it is recommended

that applicants have at least 2 years experience in process

automation and 2 years technical related education.

Certificate 2: ISA84 SIL Selection Specialist (ISA84 SLS)

requires the completion of the 2-day training course (EC52) with an

exam. 75% of the training is focused on practical applications and

exercises.

Prerequisites for this certificate include:

The ISA84 Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist

5 years experience in the process industry with a minimum of 2

years experience in process safety in:

Facilitation of and/or participation in PHAs (process hazard

analysis)

OR

Performed SIL determination/selection under supervision or

independently

Certificate 3: ISA84 SIL Verification Specialist (ISA84 SVS)

requires the completion of the 2-day training course (EC54) with an

exam. 75% of the training is focused on practical applications and

exercises.

Prerequisites for this certificate include:

The ISA84 Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist

(ISA84 SFS)

5 years related experience in the process industry with a

minimum of 2 years experience in:

Process safety in specifying instruments and control

systems

SIL verification calculations

Creation/modification of I&C design documents

Supporting start-up

Operation of process plants/facilities

ISA84 Certificates

Advanced Safety Integrity Level (SIL) SelectionThis 2 day course is a follow on to ISA’s EC50 course (Safety Instrumented Systems—Design, Analysis, and Justification). It focuses on further hands-

on examples of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) selection using a variety of different techniques. Students will be better able to save their companies time

and money through the optimization of system performance requirements.

This course is required for the ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems Certificate Program 2. You can register for the course only or for the certificate

program which includes course and exam. If you are registering for the certificate program, you should complete an application and document eligibility

criteria to sit for the certificate exam prior to taking the course.

Those who successfully complete this course and pass the exam receive the designation of ISA84 SIL Selection Specialist (ISA84 SSS).

This course is required for the ISA84 Certificate 1:

ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist (ISA84 SFS).

This course is a prerequisite for ISA84 Certificate

2: ISA84 SIL Selection Specialist (ISA84 SSS) and

ISA84 Certificate 3: ISA84 SIL Verification Special-

ist (ISA84 SVS).

Safety Instrumented Systems - Design, Analysis, & JustificationThis 3 day course focuses on the engineering requirements for the specification, design, analysis, and justification of safety instrumented systems forthe process industries. Students will learn how to determine safety integrity levels and evaluate whether proposed or existing systems meet theperformance requirements.

This course is required for the ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems Certificate Programs. You can register for the course only or for the certificateprogram which includes course and exam.

Those who successfully complete this course and pass the exam receive the designation of ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist (ISA84 SFS).

You will cover:

Danger of Overconfidence and Complacency • Lessons Learned fromPast Accidents

ANSI/ISA • AIChE • IEC • API • NFPA • HSE • IEEE • OSHA

Design Life Cycle • Separation of Control and Safety • IndependentSafety Layers

Hazard Identification • Risk Assessment • Determining Safety IntegrityLevels • Layer of Protection Analysis

Safe vs. Dangerous • Failure Mode vs. Technology • Failure Rates •Test Intervals
