A global celebrationMoved by the plight of the people of Nepal, travel and tourism students held a World Celebration Day to celebrate cultures from across the globe and, most importantly, raise an amazing £883 for Nepal. The fundraising event saw students and staff at Langley College enjoy music, dance and homemade food from around the world. Highlights included music from the band Awaaz, a raffle, a message wall, stalls and plenty of dancing!

Strictly careers Performing arts students had local residents dancing in Peascod Street in September for the launch of a new careers advice service to help 16-24 year olds into employment, education and training in the Royal Borough. To mark the launch of the Elevate Me service in Windsor, the students entertained shoppers with live musical numbers from hit West End shows and some energetic dance routines.

Recipe for successThere were cakes galore at Windsor College in September, when over 40 students on the Personal Options course took part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The students raised over £189 for the charity by selling a variety of cakes, hot drinks and raffle tickets.

Food glorious food Our Zest restaurant held a special St George’s Day theme night to celebrate quintessential English cuisine in April. From shepherd’s pie to Eton mess, the St George’s Day event saw our talented catering students create a delicious range of dishes inspired by classic English food for diners.

A moving tribute In November, Public Services students took part in a special Remembrance Day ceremony in Langley Memorial Park to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The students held a two-minute silence, gave two moving speeches and laid a wreath of poppies to pay tribute to the brave individuals who lost their lives during the war – and indeed all those who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world.

Outstanding achievers Top achievers were honoured by global entrepreneur Fraser Doherty MBE at the College’s annual Stand Out Awards Ceremony in June. The awards acknowledged the outstanding achievements of over 140 students, across both our Langley and Windsor colleges. This year’s Team of the Year Award went to students and staff from our Construction Department for their outstanding contribution in helping to fit out their brand new learning facilities.

Show-stopping skillsFrom the Snow Queen to villainess Cruella de Vil, Langley College was awash with larger than life characters as part of our annual hairdressing catwalk show. The Queen of Hearts, Lady Gaga and Aphrodite were the inspiration for just some of the wonderful and wacky creations making an appearance this year. Over 240 students from levels one to three took part in the show, with prizes awarded in each category.

Artistic flairFabulous paper dresses, sustainable furniture designs and thought-provoking photography were part of an exciting art and design exhibition showcasing the work of talented students at Windsor College in June. The successful end of year show featured an impressive array of artwork in various media and styles, from 3D design and textiles to animation and painting.

From winning prestigious competitions to raising record amounts for charity, our students have showcased their skills locally and nationally. We are extremely proud of their achievements. Here are just a few success stories from the past year.CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Mural masterpiece

The daily commute at Langley Train Station was immortalised in paint by 13 talented art and design students from our Windsor College as part of a public art project for First Great Western. The students created a stunning 48ft x 5ft mural for the footbridge at Langley Train Station. Officially unveiled in December, the dynamic artwork beautifully depicts station life.

An innovative environment

An array of technology, from 3D printers to CNC milling machines, was in action at the launch of our new state-of-the-art IT and engineering facilities at Langley College in November. Designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, designers, computer scientists and engineers, the facilities were unveiled by the Mayor of Slough and include a new Innovation Centre (ie. the Genovation Centre), IT labs, computer-aided design studio and engineering workshops.

Championing young talent

Gigneys restaurant in Windsor has been selected as a regional finalist (South West, Thames Valley and Solent) in the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards 2015. The company, which works in partnership with the College and currently employs nine apprentices, was shortlisted for the SME newcomer of the year award due to its exceptional commitment to developing young talent.

An Oscar-winning performance

Our students were given an insight into the world of film-making and advice on starting a business venture, when former student and Oscar-winning film producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin visited Langley College in December. Gareth, who studied A Levels at Windsor College in the late 1980s, returned to talk to students about running their own business as well as his illustrious career; a career that has included producing the 2010 film The King’s Speech for which he won an Oscar for Best Film.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans24+ Advanced Learning loans can help you pay for course fees if you are aged 24 and over and studying for a Level 3 qualification or above. This can cover all of the upfront course fees and will be paid directly to the College on your behalf. These loans will not be means tested or credit checked. You will only start to repay these once you have completed the course and are earning more than £21,000 per year. This is a government loan and repayments will be less than a loan from a bank (interest charged at inflation plus up to 3%). What is more, if you undertake an Access to HE course your loan could be written off if you successfully progress on to and complete a Higher Education course.

If you are eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan then you may be eligible for help with particular costs including childcare, travel or equipment via the 24+ Bursary if you have a very low household income.

To find out if you are eligible for any of the above support schemes or if your course might attract a discount, please contact our dedicated Student Finance team on 01753 793368, email [email protected] or drop into our Langley or Windsor colleges.

Paying for the courseWhen you enrol you need to bring a cheque, debit/credit card or cash. If you want to pay by instalments, for courses longer than one term, you need to bring your bank details plus payment for the first instalment (25% of total fee). If you are claiming a fee reduction you need to bring evidence of your financial status.

Payment by an employerIf your employer is paying for your course, you must complete your employer’s details on the enrolment form. You will also need to provide a letter from your employer, on company paper, agreeing to pay your course costs. If you withdraw after the course starts, the company is still liable for payment of the fees.

RefundsIf your course is cancelled and no alternative course is available, we will fully reimburse fees paid. However, we will not reimburse fees if you voluntarily withdraw from the course.

International studentsIf you have recently arrived in the UK, or are in the UK on a visa, you may be charged at the higher international rate. There are some exceptions. To check your status as a ‘home’ student, you can drop into our Langley or Windsor colleges with your passport, visa and any other documentation relating to your stay in the UK.

Access to Higher Education (and Pre-Access)If you are returning to education after a long break or don’t have the relevant qualifications to start a Higher Education course right away, our Access to HE courses are designed to update your skills and prepare you for study at a higher level in just one year. You’ll then be able to move on to an HE course at college or university. For those who need a little more help, we also offer short Pre-Access courses to boost English and maths skills.

Higher Education (Level 4/5)At the College, you have the chance to progress your studies from a Level 1 course right through to a Level 4 qualification. These are known as Higher Education courses and include Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), Foundation Degrees and Higher Apprenticeships. See pages 64-66 for more information on our wide range of Higher Education courses.

Foundation Skills

If you do not have formal qualifications and need to build on your basic skills, such as maths, ICT or reading and writing, before you move on to more advanced study, we have

a number of courses that could be right for you. Personal Options and Advance2Go! will give you the skills that are the foundations for learning. Check out pages 42-43 for Personal Options and Advance2Go!

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications)NVQs are work-related qualifications concentrating on practical skills for industry. You can train in your chosen career and get a recognised qualification in subjects like construction, exercise and fitness or hairdressing. At 16, there are three levels, so entry requirements vary according to the level you choose:

Level 1 – FoundationFoundation skills in occupations.

Level 2 – IntermediateCraft level, equivalent to GCSEs at grade C or above.

Level 3 – AdvancedTechnician level, equivalent to two A Levels.

You are assessed at College, work or both. Once you’ve finished you can either go on to the next level or get a job in your chosen career. NVQs can also be gained through an apprenticeship scheme. See page 22.

A Levels A Levels are academic qualifications that last two years. If you get five or more GCSEs at grade C or above you can apply for this programme. You will study three or four subjects at A Level. These qualifications are no longer divided into AS and A2 levels. Instead, you will be assessed via external exams at the end of the two-year course. However, college mock exams take place at the end of the first year and the results of these will provide predicted grades for UCAS applications.

These qualifications are the traditional route to university and are usually a combination of classwork, homework, exams and some coursework.

GCSEs and Functional SkillsWhen you join us you may already have taken GCSEs and gained a grade C or above in maths and English. If you haven’t, you will need to resit these GCSEs, or prepare for doing so by taking a Functional Skills course first. English and maths (Functional Skills and GCSEs) are free to all students. We have a team of specialist teachers who will support you to pass these subjects.

We also offer a range of one-year intensive GCSE pathway programmes, which are designed to help you re-take and improve your results in order to move on to study A Levels or a Level 3 vocational course. See page 26.

From summer 2017, a new grading system for GCSE exam results is being introduced nationally. Eventually, all GCSE exams will be graded from 1 to 9 rather than the current A* to G, with 9 the highest grade. Grade 4 will be equivalent to grade C on the previous system.

BTEC qualificationsBTECs and similar vocational qualifications each focus on a particular type of work. They prepare you for employment or Higher Education. Entry grades vary according to the level of course – see below.

Diploma Level 1One-year course, equivalent to gaining four GCSEs at grade D.

Diploma Level 2 One-year course, approximately equivalent to gaining four or five GCSEs at grade C or above.

Diploma Level 3Taken over two years, the Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels, and the Extended Diploma to three A Levels.

You are mostly assessed through assignments and a portfolio of work as well as teamwork. You can usually progress to the next level either at college or university if you gain Merit or Distinction grades.

Tech Level, Tech Baccalaureate & Applied Generals These are new Level 3 qualifications which are being introduced in stages. Like A Levels, any of these routes will prepare you for further study at a higher level, university or employment. Tech Levels will count towards a new Technical Baccalaureate, which acknowledges the highest level of technical training students aged 16-19 can achieve. For more details, see our website.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS

Who can do an apprenticeship?Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to do an apprenticeship, whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to change careers.

Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements. You will be given an initial assessment to find the best route into your chosen apprenticeship programme.

You should also be employed or actively looking for relevant employment. In some cases, we can help you find a suitable company or if you can’t find a job, you may be able to undertake part of your apprenticeship full-time at College and complete the rest once you have found employment.

How is the course funded?Government funding may be available if you are: § 16–18 years old: Funding is available for all occupational

areas and generally there is no fee charged to the apprentice or their employer.

§ 19 and over: Part funding is available and a contribution is also required from the employer.

For the latest information on government funding, please call us to discuss.

What are the benefits? An apprenticeship will enable you to: § earn money while you learn § gain on-the-job experience § achieve a nationally recognised qualification § learn job-specific skills § expand your knowledge § fit study around employment § improve your maths, English and ICT skills § improve your career prospects and chance of promotion.

What are the benefits for the employer? Whether developing the skills of a current member of staff or recruiting a new individual, apprenticeships are a great, cost-effective way to develop your workforce and improve your bottom line. In fact 75% of employers believe that despite the economic crisis, apprentices are more important than ever to their business (2012 Populus research by National Apprenticeship Service).

An apprenticeship will enable your business to: § reduce overall training and recruitment costs § harness fresh new talent § address future skills gaps § keep pace with the latest technology and practices § improve staff morale § increase staff retention and loyalty § improve productivity.

At East Berkshire College, we support the employer as well as the apprentice. We work with over 2,000 employers, helping

their businesses grow through training, and even help organisations recruit apprentices. Our apprentice matching service ensures you find the right individual with the required skills for your business.

What is the next step?If you are interested in undertaking an apprenticeship, check out the latest apprenticeship vacancies at www.eastberks.ac.uk/apprenticeships. Alternatively, you can also fill out the application form at the back of this prospectus and send it back to us. For more details, contact us on 01753 793288 or email [email protected].

If you are a business thinking about developing a current employee or taking on a new apprentice, please email [email protected] or call 01753 443855.

Not yet ready for an apprenticeship?Try a traineeship If you have little work experience or qualifications, then a traineeship could help you get ready for an apprenticeship or job in a variety of different sectors. Traineeships last up to a maximum of six months and will provide you with the essential work preparation training, work experience and employability skills you need to progress.

A traineeship includes: § a work experience placement of at least six weeks with

an employer § work preparation training (e.g. CV writing, interview

techniques, time management, presentation skills) § basic vocational knowledge in your chosen subject § the opportunity to improve your English and maths skills

Who can do a traineeship? Traineeships are available for young people aged 16-24 (or up to 25 if you have a Learning Difficulty Assessment), who are qualified below Level 3 and not working more than 16 hours per week. Traineeships are an ideal opportunity if you are motivated to get a job but lack the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

What are the benefits of a traineeship? Just like apprenticeships, you can choose from traineeships in a wide range of subject areas, which could lead on to an apprenticeship or full-time employment. The courses can also be tailored to your individual needs to help you become ‘work ready’. The traineeship will help you develop employability skills, improve your English and maths, gain work experience and obtain an employer reference for your CV.

How do I apply for a traineeship? For more details and to apply for a traineeship, email [email protected] or call 01753 793288 to talk to an adviser.

When I finished school, I didn’t want to go to university and get into debt. I thought it would be good to learn a trade and an apprenticeship is a great way to do that and build a career. I’m now earning money, I have a pension and I hope to become a qualified engineer within the next two years.

Anthony Ladipo, Apprentice Maintenance Technician, Marriott Hotel London Heathrow

An apprenticeship really is the best of both worlds. When I complete my apprenticeship, I’ll not only have gained an HND qualification, but I’ll also have the experience to go with it.

Catriona McGill, IT Apprentice at Oracle

I’ve always loved cooking, but never thought of it as a career until I got my apprenticeship. I didn’t enjoy school, but I really enjoy learning at college because it is more practical. My apprenticeship has turned my life around and given me a career path. Not many people can say they have cooked for The Queen, Bear Grylls and Boris Johnson!

AN

D

A Levels and GCSEs are well respected by employers, colleges and universities as they show that you are bright enough to

work at a higher level, you can work hard to achieve a goal and you can manage your time efficiently.

Maybe you have a job or higher level course in mind that requires specific academic knowledge. Perhaps you’re not sure of your ambitions yet, but want to get some solid qualifications under your belt. Wherever you’re heading, A Levels and GCSEs can give you the solid foundation to get you there.

Why study with us?East Berkshire College is a great place to study A Levels and prepare for your next step into university, employment or further study. We have excellent facilities and a wide range of subjects, and our results are consistently high.

Our A Level courses are run at our modern Windsor College, near the centre of Windsor. Our tutors are all specialists in their area of study and our students value the mature and friendly environment created in the classrooms. As well as teaching independence and supporting you through College life, we will help prepare you for university and employment by helping you develop key skills such as project and time management as well as teaching you how to prioritise your work and meet deadlines.

We are proud of our high standards and have invested heavily in our college to provide you with the latest technology, from media suites and science laboratories to the latest tablet devices (e.g. Surface Pros and iPads). In fact, Ofsted has rated the College as ‘Good’ with outstanding features following an inspection in 2013, so you can rest assured you’ll receive a quality education.

Your learning will also stretch beyond the classroom with interesting trips, activities, guest speakers and real life experiences. We work closely with local employers to provide all our full-time students with structured work experience programmes and an exciting enterprise programme to provide you with the chance to develop valuable employability skills and gain an insight into a real work environment.

GCSEs:Our one-year intensive GCSE pathways are designed to help you re-take and improve your GCSE results in order to move on to study A Levels or a Level 3 BTEC vocational course. You can choose a specific pathway or a combination of subjects to suit your needs. As well as being taught by experienced lecturers in a friendly and mature classroom environment, you will also have a personal tutor, who will support you all the way through your studies, monitor your progress and help you plan your next steps.

A Levels:We offer over 20 subjects at A Level. You can choose any combination of subjects, according to your interests and career ambitions. If you’re not sure what subjects to choose or if you know the career you would like to pursue, our qualified advisors are able to advise you on the right combination of subjects to study and the grades you’ll need to achieve your goal.

In some areas, you can even combine an A Level subject with a vocational course at Level 3 to provide you with a strong mix of academic knowledge and practical skills. For example, you could combine A Level maths and an engineering course. Alternatively, you could choose to complement your A Level courses by learning a second or even third language.

What do you need to study A Levels? To study A Levels you will usually need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, achieved in the same academic year. Some subjects may require a minimum of a B pass at GCSE. You will then be able to choose a combination of three or four subjects to study at A Level.

How do the courses work?

Foundation LearningWith foundation learning, your course is tailored around you. You’ll be offered a personalised learning programme that can put you on a journey towards further study or employment. The first step is to understand what you’re aiming for, so we can help you to achieve your goals.

Working with you, we’ll then structure a course to help you turn these aspirations into reality. At every step, you’ll be guided and supported by personable, experienced tutors.

Your study programme will be completely personalised. Rather than following a set curriculum, you’ll only work on topics that are relevant to your goals, with all courses including a vocational element, such as motor vehicle, childcare, beauty therapy, construction, ICT or customer service skills. In addition, we offer fantastic enterprise schemes at our Langley and Windsor colleges to help you learn new skills, build confidence and work as a team. For example, we run a business enterprise called Poppies, which is designed to help you learn transferable skills such as maths, IT, measuring, ordering and handling money.

We also deliver a Pre-Personal Options Programme which is a pre-entry level course where you will be given one-to-one support to study the LASER Personal Progress Diploma at the level most suited to your needs and abilities.

Where could it take you?A Foundation Learning course sets you up for the next phase of your career path and can improve your employability. You could progress on to a course at the next level in your chosen vocational subject or an apprenticeship.

After completion of a Pre-Personal Options course, you may progress to the Personal Options Programme or employment/supported employment.
