FULMORE MIDDLE SCHOOL WEEK OF DECEMBER 9, 2018 FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK Greetings Falcon Families, I am pleased to announce that our Maker Space is coming along nicely. Yesterday, students in Genius Hour Club, were working on the Lego wall, using the newly purchased 3D printer and making creations at the arts and crafts station. It was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves. I will update you on any new additions to the space as the year goes on. Parent Coffee This morning we had a wonderful turn out for the monthly Parent Coffee meeting. Today Ms. Williams, 8th grade Assistant Principal, led a discussion about attendance and Ms. Cherry-Anne Gildharry, Math Instructional Coach, gave a presentation about Fulmore’s current math supports as well as what is happening in our math classes. Parent Survey Parent Surveys will be sent electronically this year instead of paper surveys. The online survey is not yet available to parents; we will share that information with you once we receive it. New Teachers Ms. Hernandez is joining our faculty as a 7th grade ELA teachers. Ms. Hernandez has been doing a wonderful job with students. So many students are always telling us how they love to chat with her and love being in her class. Mr. Addington, former permanent substitute teacher, is now working in our Learning Lab. He will be assisting students with make-up work, testing accommodations and online course work via Odysseyware. Ms. Stanton, former dance teacher, has decided to pursue a different career. Interviews were conducted this week and last week to replace Ms. Stanton. I am happy to report that Ms. Barclay will start in the Spring semester on Jan. 2nd as Fulmore’s new dance teacher. In the meantime, Ms. Northcutt, Magnet Director and Mr. Addington, Learning Lab Teacher, will be assisting the substitute teacher with grades and lesson plans for the remainder of the fall semester. It’s Cold Outside! It is starting to get colder each day. This year Austin ISD is hosting their annual Coats for Kids event this Saturday, Dec 8th at the Palmer Events Center. Coats for Kids collects and distributes new and gently worn winter coats to eligible youth in Central Texas. Shuttles will be available at different campuses in AISD. Progress Reports & GradesWe are now approaching the end of the 3rd six weeks grading period. Progress reports were sent outtoday. Please have a discussion with your child about their progress. If your child needs tutoring, please have them stay with their teacher on their designated day. Please see the attached tutoringschedule below. A copy is also on our campus website. College Readiness and PreparationGoing to college and graduating is a great expectation to have for your child. However, it is not alwayseasy to know what do to do to prepare them for college and high school graduation. Here are the top10 actions that students should take to get to college and graduate on time. 1. Stay organized, study, write homework down and plan for long term projects.2. Get all A’s & B’s starting in 9th grade. Many students think that having good grades only matterstheir senior year of high school but in reality, all colleges look at grades for all year. Start those habitsearly and work on getting good grades now!3. Participate in extracurricular activities now and from 9th through 12th grade. When applying forcollege there will be a section to add all of the students after school activities. From clubs they joined, teams they played on, awards they won, jobs/internships they held and more. Activities over thesummer are also helpful. Fulmore has several after school clubs for students to participate in. Pleasesee the attached yer or our webstie for after school clubs available at Fulmore.4. Study for the ACT/SAT/TSI starting in 10th grade. At Fulmore all of our 8th graders took the PSAT.This is a great start to studying for these exams. Our campus also has an Odysseyware program thathas modules for test prep such as SAT and TSI. Odysseyware login information is provided below andon our website:https://austinisd-fulmore.owschools.com/owsoo/login/authStudent Username: Student ID #(no S in front of the ID#)Student Password: fulmore5. File Taxes every Jan-April. Families should complete and le their annual taxes every year as it willhelp your child apply for nancial aid in October. It is important not to wait until April to start ling fortaxes because they are due by April 15th. Foundation Communities offers free tax support in Englishand Spanish: http://foundcom.org/nancial-stability/austin-tax-preparation/6. Apply for FASFA or TASFA starting October 1st. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (fordocumented students) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (for undocumented students)are free applications to help provide students with federal and state grants (free money) or loans(money to pay back). This application opens every year on October 1st.7. Finish your college essays by October 1st.8. Apply for college starting in July 1st before senior year. Highly competitive schools like the Universityof Texas, Texas A & M, Rice, Baylor, etc. have early decisions deadline that are much earlier than otherschools. It is best to apply to those schools by October 15th. It is recommended that applications aresubmitted to all other schools by December 1st.9. Apply for scholarships. There are hundreds of scholarships and many of them only require a shortessay.10. Once in college, ask for help when needed.
