Functions of the Frogs Body Systems

Page 2: Functions of the frogs body systems

• The reproductive system of the frog is to create offspring to continue the species.• Male frog has testes that release sperm

on top of females eggs for fertilization.• Female frog has ovaries that produce

eggs. Females lay eggs on the ground, then the male will lay his sperm on top of the eggs for fertilization.

When dissecting, the sex of the frog is the last fact you will discover because the reproductive organs are located along the spine of the frog. If your female frog has eggs forming, you can see these upon cutting the frog open.

The Reproductive System

Page 3: Functions of the frogs body systems

• The endocrine system in frogs help with hibernation and reproduction.• Hormones are secreted by various endocrine glands to maintain homeostasis within the frog.

The Nervous System• The nervous system in frogs is highly developed. It consists of a brain, a spinal cord, and nerves.• It aids the frog in all of its senses to respond to internal and external stimuli.

Page 5: Functions of the frogs body systems

The Muscular System• The muscular system in frogs performs similar functions as humans. • Movement of the body.• Movement of material within the body.• Frogs main muscular action is large leg muscles for jumping.

Page 6: Functions of the frogs body systems

The Skeletal System• The skeletal system in frogs performs similar functions as humans. • Points of muscle attachment.• Joints connect bones to be levers for movement.• Marrow produces blood cells.

The Circulatory System• The circulatory system in frogs performs similar functions as humans, but the structure is somewhat different.• The frog’s heart has 3 chambers.• Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix in the heart.• Arteries and veins carry blood containing nutrients, wastes and hormones throughout the body.

The Respiratory System• The respiratory system in frogs is unique in that the lungs aren’t the only organ that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide. • The frog’s skin is also used to exchange gasses when submerged in water.• Lungs are used to exchange O2 & CO2 between the atmosphere and body.

The Excretory System• The excretory system in frogs includes the urinary system along with respiratory, digestive and integumentary systems, same as humans.• The kidney’s, ureters, bladder and cloaca make up the urinary system.• Liquid wastes are filtered from the blood and stored as urine.

The Integumentary System

• The integumentary system in frogs has several functions that are needed for survival.• Protection through camouflage.• Permeable skin to breathe through.• Stays moist for protection against injury and infection.

Page 11: Functions of the frogs body systems

The Digestive System• The digestive system in frogs is similar to humans. We have most structures in common.• Digest food mechanically and chemically.• Food is broken down to create energy for all body functions.• Solid wastes are created and excreted via the cloaca.
