What is Fussy Eating?Refusal to consume an adequate variety of foods that are familiar (and in some cases unfamiliar).
Food neophobia is a fear of trying new foods.
EatWell Australia’s 5 Fussy Eating Tips
Texture Ӏ New Foods Ӏ Play time Ӏ Routine Ӏ Rewards
Texture• Prevent fussy eating by
introducing textured food at appropriate times during development i.e. lumpy foods by the time an infant is 9 months old
• Can be done with older children by using clay, playdough, sand, goop etc
New Foods• Do you have their
attention?
• Do they like the food?
• Do you like this food?
• Are they just misbehaving?
• Neophobia and introducing alongside ‘safe’ foods
• Try food at least 10 – 15 times
Play time!• Playing is learning time for
children
• Perfect for kids with neophobia (the concept of a toy spider rather than the real thing!)
• Shopping kits and Play Ovens are a great way for kids to mimic adult responsibilities and be able to translate that to real life
Routine• Kids can take an active role
in meal time routine from a young age.
• Setting the table, helping prepare or cook the meal, helping serve up.
• Getting to choose what ingredients go into a meal or picking new foods at the supermarket.
• Keep meal times regular. And have rules in place about snacking, packing up play toys & sitting down to eat.
Rewards• Food as a reward is the
number one issue when it comes to fussy eating.
• Food should never be given as a reward or treat.
• Food is for energy and nourishment. The occasional ‘sometimes’ food is included in that – however not in connection with emotion.
You choose what gets offered to your child…They choose if they want to eat it or not!
