Fuze Development CenterMission
To expedite Fuzing Technology to the War Fighter
• Provide increased capability, safe & reliable ammunition to the war fighter in short order

Fuze Development CenterNeed for Capability
• Fuzing is a very unique business– Requires small, intricate, cost effective, gun-rugged designs– Safety vs. Reliability – Shrinking Fuze Industrial Base– Limited Technology Investment of past years created gap– Acquisition rules?– Interfaces and Environments of Weapon System– Balance between Gov’t expertise and Contractor staff
(Proper transition of designs takes place from Concept/Design thru SDD and into production)

Fuze Development CenterPurpose
• Provide a place for Government to:– Partner with private industry in development.– Conduct up-front R&D and solidify fuze requirements early prior to
contracting out (homework first).– Preserve technology in a shrinking Fuze Industrial Base.
• To support early R&D work and study critical processes prior to Contract.– Industry has limited funding to support this on their own.– Reduces risk in transferring technology from development to
production.– Many programs have benefited from this approach.
• M734A1 MOFM, M783 PD/Delay, M782 MOFA

Fuze Development CenterBenefits
• War fighter needs are quickly supported.– Yield fast safe and reliable fuze designs– Builds depth in Fuze Competency
• Fuze Industrial Base – Realize profits sooner– Shorter development production cycles improve ROI.– Better Industry Awareness of User needs– More opportunities

Fuze Development CenterApproach
• Build strong bonds & partnerships within fuze community • Earlier Active Industry Involvement in Design Process – (6.2 thru 6.3)
– We will welcome anyone from industry with an idea and desire to work with us to bring it to fruition.
– Partner with OGA and Academia and Industry (Fuze Contractors andtheir subs) via CRADA, TSA etc. (to support ‘quick demos’)
• system concepts evaluation• Rapidly prototype fuze designs using manufacturing technology• Lean Manufacturing• Expedite transition from design to Production• Seek Next Generation Commercial Manufacturing Technologies to create
‘Disruptive Fuze Manufacturing Technologies – MEMs• The above will allow the Gov’t & Industry to rapidly prototype, test, build in
quantity Fuze Designs using actual production processes

Fuze Development CenterPartners
• Actively working with the following partners– USN / USAF thru DOD Fuze IPT initiatives– Universal SMT equipment manufacturer – training on equipment and MEM’s assembly
process development.– Kaman Aerospace / Raymond – potential CRADA– ATK – potential CRADA– L3 (KDI & BT ) potential CRADA– CRANE – PWB initiative / MOA– KCP – MOA on prototyping initiatives– ACI – potential CRADA – MEMS Collaboration / MEMs MTO ….
• Seeking Additional Partners– Establish local supplier network – Future Growth: Electronics / Automotive / Toy manufactures and others with High
volume low cost manufacturing techniques
